I bought an STIHL chainsaw from Ace Hardware in Mt. View, which was a "lemon," to say the least. Ace does not service the chainsaws it sells, so I brought mine to a certified STIHL service center in San Jose called Hitchcock's. Long story short, they couldn't fix it and gave me the ultimate run around. So what to do? It seems that nowadays, finding a business that can troubleshoot and fix just about anything is hard to find. Fortunately, I found B & B Small Engine Repair in Santa Cruz. I live in San Jose, but it was well worth the drive to get my chainsaw looked at. I had some trepidation about taking my chainsaw for repair. I have a shoulder injury and I couldn't get my saw started. when I entered the shop I was immediately greeted and asked if they could help me. I explained that I had neglected to maintain my chainsaw correctly. The technician took my saw to the back shop, drained the old fuel and replaced it with fresh fuel. I heard a chainsaw running outside, so I went to look and I saw the technician running my saw and starting it easily. The technician brought it back to me and told me it would be $2 for the new fuel and that was all. I was surprise that he didn't charge me for the labor or anything else. Ordered a Stihl chainsaw here a couple weeks ago. Picked it up today. They went through every aspect iof operation with me: all the safety features, chain tensioner, oil, removing bar, cleaning, etc. This is all basic operation of any chainsaw, but the fact that they knew my model so well and took the time to demonstrate everything is the reason we need a local dealers. I checked the prices: same as Amazon. Just buy it all here: helmet system, chaps, everything. How else would you be able to compare pro versus consumer helmet systems, to choose the one you like best? Hint: you want the pro version, it's only $20 more. I have used B&B for many years and they have always repaired my equipment with no questions except for this last time ,I purchased a back pack blower from them long story short the carb adjustment screws kept backing out ,their fix was to silicone them into place instead of replacing bad carb it was under warranty but they said nothing was wrong I am now stuck with a blower that can never have carb adjustments and can't use because of the bad smell it produces sad to say that they have gone down hill on service and backing the equipment they sell read more

What I especially like about B & B is that they take the "long view". Rather than try to make a quick buck, they want loyal, long-term satisfied customers. I went in yesterday because my battery powered Stihl weed whacker (which is used daily on my 3 acres ) was making " a funny noise". You know... the noise that says... uh oh. I am a woman of a certain age and I remember the feeling from back in the day of not being welcome or feeling slightly discounted when I would go into an all male repair shop (Car mechanic, auto parts, hardware). This didn't happen at B&B. They were welcoming and friendly. After listening to me (yay!) they took my tool right back, figured it out, cleaned it up, put on new string and Bob's your Uncle! I got out of there for 8 bucks and that included a new pair of chick magnet safety goggles (the kind you had in high school chem, that fit over your glasses). During the wait for the repair, I stood around w/ a couple of the shop guys and had delightful conversation about all manner of things. I've been in there when it's been scary busy and they are still always friendly and professional. Sometimes it can take a while (like weeks) to get your tool back, but it's because they are so backed up. I was taken back by all the bad reviews. But maybe they upgraded their approach. I was treated very well. I am an older looking broken down hippy looking female, and many times when I have to go into a man's world, I am trashed, disparaged, and insulted. In one incident when I went to my first night at a karate dojo, when we bowed to do three step sparing, the male black belt, leaned in and said b.... I am going to break every one of your ribs, and the beating was so severe, I bled and he lost his black belt, demoted to a white belt, because he hated women coming into a man's world. I travel very light footed into men's arenas. But the young man, I cannot recall his name, and with the mask on, well, all I can say is he has beautiful eyes and a calm manner about himself. I had not used a chainsaw in 40 years, but he took the time and braved all my questions with ease and with a good attitude. I was grateful because I get tired of being treated badly when I come in to offer my support to local businesses. I will be coming back to buy a chipper and to have my chainsaw serviced. Thank you to the man with the beautiful eyes. My father was a super sales person who served whole countries with products in Africa; so I was raised to be aware of how customer service renders their attitudes. If a customer is rude and a a hole, do dope slap them, but if its just people with questions, its good to suck it in and use patience to address any concerns, and then you got a customer for life. read more

B&B includes a retail store for small engine equipment as well as a repair and maintenance shop. I have had unsatisfactory experiences with both. I brought in a high-end Honda lawn mower for repair of an engine problem. I originally bought the mower new for about $1000 from B&B. I was told the parts would be ordered and the mower repaired within about one week to a week and a half. The repair took one month. Since I needed the mower for my landscape maintenance business, I found the delay frustrating and told them so. One of the arrogant owners told me after 3 1/2 weeks that I should have just bought a new engine as that would have been faster. Apparently he forgot that he was the one who originally recommended that I repair rather than replace the engine! I now drive out of my way to shop elsewhere for equipment, parts, and repairs. read more
