I was on my morning walk, and spotted this place, and it appeared to be an honest mechanic shop. I called them, and asked how much do they charge for a diagnostic for a check engine light, and the guy over the phone said "we don't charge for a diagnostic, and it only takes 5 minutes." What?! I went to the dealership and they charged me $130 for a diagnostic test and made me wait 2 hours. I asked the guy if I needed to make an appointment, and he said "no, just bring your car on over." What?! I had to schedule an appointment at the dealership, and I still waited in line once I arrived. I drove my car over, and the guy that I was talking to over the phone turned out to be the "Famous Sam."He told me what 2 codes were popping up on their scanner, and quoted me a price of $505. What?! The dealership told me that at least 5-7 codes were popping up and it would cost $1618 to reset the codes, and they would need to keep it overnight. Sam, said, we'll have your car ready in about 2-3 hours. Sam, called me, and told me that my car was ready. I went over to pay my bill and I was off into the sunset. I went to take my emission test, and passed with flying colors. I cannot tell you how bummed I was after receiving the $1618 bill from the dealership, and how ready I was to sell my car and buy a new car. Luckily, Sam and his mechanics saved the day. I can now safely drive my car without having an expired plate sticker. I can continue to enjoy my car for another 2 years. I will definitely be taking my car back to this mechanic shop for other work that needs to be done. read more

First time here. My regular mechanic retired. I asked a couple people for recommendations...both people had high marks for Sam. So I decided to give them a try . The reviews were glowing....many comments mentioned "honestly" as their first comment about Sam ..the owner. I needed rear brakes and rotors.. I hade three estimates prior to coming.. there price was inline with others.. about $30.00 less then my lowest estimate.. I brought car around 9:00 am and it was ready by 11:00 am with oil change too !!! I talked with Sam for 15 mins.. Friendly and knowledgeable and worth my trip here !! The owner, Sam, is a very honest mechanic and they do a good job. My family has been taking our cars to B&H for over 15 years and we've never had a problem. The prices are fair, and they'll never try to tell you something is wrong or needs to be fixed if everything is fine. They'll refer you elsewhere if they don't feel comfortable fixing a certain issue, which I also appreciate. They could easily "try" to fix it and still charge, but they know their limitations as well as their strengths. read more

My car had issues of an unknown kind while driving in the Portage Park area. I tried heading for home, but became worried that I could do damage to the vehicle, so I pulled it over and parked it. I was only about four miles from my residence, but given that I didn't have a reliable mechanic near my home, it made sense to find one near the car's location to ensure a short tow. So where else to look for someone reliable but YELP. I identified a few places with five star ratings but opted to call B&H first due to proximity, hours and listed specialties that might mostly line up with the problems I experienced. I spoke with Sam on the phone shortly after he opened. He explained that he wasn't sure if he could get to my car that day, but when I asked him if he could just give me a diagnosis, he assured me he could. I had the car towed there by 10:45 and after having looked around on the internet, told him that I suspected it had something to do with the CV axle. Somewhat surprisingly, I got it right. And within an hour after the car got there, Sam called me and confirmed my suspicions. After our previous conversation, I asked him if the car would be ready the next day - he said it would be ready in a couple of hours and quoted me a price that in my opinion was beyond reasonable. So at 1:15PM I get a message that my car is ready and at 3:30PM, I pick it up. Seems like I've spent more time at dealerships waiting for an oil change than the time this fix took. Talk about a positive service experience - this was absolutely it. While Sam doesn't have a plush waiting room at his shop, I'll live with that in exchange for the peace of mind that he offers with straight forward, pleasant conversation and the knowledge that he won't require me to take out a second mortgage and give up my first born to pay for repairs. read more

From my experience a decent honest man owns this shop. I've been there twice the first time I thought I heard a strange noise coming from my car. The owner took it for a quick test drive said I don't hear anything it's probably just tire noise and didn't charge me. The second time was to have my winter tires put on and he said we can do it but you can probably get it done cheaper at a tire shop. I went ahead with them and they quickly got the job done for a fair price with no attempt to upsell. read more

I want to take the time to report something positive that happened to me in the neighborhood and to highly recommend B&H Auto Mechanics on Central and Sunnyside for any of your auto needs. If you've got an older car and want someone honest, go there! My son's 2003 Honda Civic broke down yesterday and he took it there and was quoted $470. I had my son transfer some money to my account and I decide to pay the rest. We go there to pick it up today and find out it was only $325 because they didn't need to do as much as he originally thought. OLD SCHOOL IS THE BEST SCHOOL When I bought my first car, I had a mechanic. He was "my" guy. He was like the small town mechanic out of some warm and fuzzy TV show. He'd look at your car for free, checking out each sound and vibration. He could detect the subtlest change in your engine by sound that only he and dogs could hear. He'd tell you the truth when you brought your car in feeling something didn't sound right or the car didn't ride right, sending you away with your fears allayed. For sure, he sent me away with more "there's nothing wrong" then he did actually servicing my car. I was a nervous new driver and treated my first car with the attention and care any newborn deserves. Point is, he was thorough, honest and really good at what he did. But eventually he retired and I never quite felt the guy who bought his shop carried those traditions on. Of honesty, integrity and a job well done. I've been looking for a mechanic just like him since, floundering here and there, asking for recommendations, testing the waters here and there. And some 30 years later, I FINALLY found that same quality of service, that same honesty and that same secure feeling that someone has got your back again at B&H Auto!!!!! They were highly recommended by a very dear, very wise friend. I had some front end work that needed to be done. I did my homework and found them to be very, very reasonable and the work is stellar. There have already been a few times when I've brought the car in because of some noise, etc. and they will be honest and send you home letting you know nothing's wrong or you don't need your brakes done now, but maybe in six months. Once my air conditioner compressor got backed up and fluid drenched my passenger side floor -- and he flushed it out...at no charge. I appreciate their honesty and integrity and sense of professionalism and customer service. And And there's a great, great feeling to be able to take your car back again and again to the same people...because they begin to "know" the car, the nuances, etc. and I feel over the long haul is much better for the car. I have been taking my cars here for almost 20 years *gasp* Yes, my current car, and the last three cars I owned. When I first moved to the Norwood Park/Jefferson Park area around 17 years ago, i took my car to a place on Higgins, a few blocks west of Natoma...I can't think of the name right now but being a young female with little to no knowledge of cars, I walked out of THAT place with a list of things wrong with my car. I was referred to that place by my neighbor at the time. Like I treat my own health, I decided to get a second opinion about all these necessary services for things supposedly wrong with my car. I can't recall who recommended Sam at B&H Auto, but I went there with my list and after another inspection there, maybe one thing was wrong from that list...the rest, could wait or wasn't even an issue. Ever since I've had full faith in this place and they have never done me wrong. I moved out to the southwest burbs a few years ago and still bring my car to Sam when things go wrong - he is straight up & honest and recommend this place to anyone looking for car repairs. Great fast service. Place is a old school small store garages. Great owner that checks your car asap and takes it in within 5 minutes. Went for a head gasket change, very fair price of $138 total for my car. Sat there with my father to wait for the car. The owner is so welcoming and spoke with my dad while we waited. Car was ready within 35 minutes or so. I highly recommend this shop. They don't try to take advantage of you, or your time. I walked in this morning at 9 AM, Sam was there talking to a customer. Waited my turn like a good boy and then told 'em what car it was, and I needed an oil change. He asked me if I wanted to wait, I asked how long it would be. "I'll be able to get it in in fifteen minutes." Alright, cool. I'll be back. Walked over to Dunkin Donuts at Montrose and Central, ordered myself a coffee and a donut, walked back and ate the donut on the way there. Got back at 9:12, and my car was parked next to the shop and no longer in the space. Walked in and sat down, assuming they were getting ready to move it into the shop. Sam walks in seconds later, "Ready to go, buddy. All your other fluids are good." $26.50 total bill. Quick, Easy, Super Close, Prices Seemed Average. Good stuff. read more

Sam is an honest mechanic. I'm so happy I found his shop. So far he's fixed my harmonic balancer, the belt to my alternator, and outer tire rods. I drive a '95 Camry that I'm just trying to get another year or 2 out of, so I appreciate his honesty in letting me know what does/doesn't need to be done. Hate taking broken cars to dealers - they always leave me feeling like a chump and a fool. Admittedly not an uncommon feeling, but also not one that I seek out willingly... Wife's car, '08 Toyota, suddenly died early one evening while she was picking up our daughter from the nature program. Just like Wonderpets, my son and I were there to rescue them both. Brought the jumper cables and started her car up and she drove it home. I figured my son had been sitting in the car listening to the radio with the engine off (don't ask...) and the battery just needed a bit of juice. Let the car run for an hour, and then went to bed at peace with the world. Next morning, no car engine starting action. Not even the "rrrrr, rrrrr" that means the car is trying to convince you that it's trying hard, even though it really isn't. Searched Yelp for a non-dealer with a positive reputation, jumped the car and took it to B&H on a Saturday morning. Hadn't ever been here before. The guy behind the counter (owner? didn't catch his name) said they'd take a look at it. Came back in a few minutes later and said it needed a new battery. Ten minutes later, car is starting, I'm happy, wife is happy and all truly is right with the world. Didn't feel like a chump or a fool, got quick and responsive service on a Saturday morning, easy to find the place, nice attitude and problem was fixed - that's five stars in my book. read more

I've been going to Sam (the owner and operator of B&H) for almost six years now and there's a reason for that. Honest and helpful mechanics are incredibly difficult to find. Sam is one of the few honest and helpful mechanics out there. He is a truly genuine person who will not use a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo to trick you into spending money that you do not need to spend. He has always been a straight shooter with me and if he couldn't handle a job he would refer me to the right source and he would always inform me of what truly needed to be taken care of and what could be overlooked. I used to sweat (not literally) going into repair shops because I do not know much about cars and I was always afraid of my ignorance being taken advantage of. With Sam, I am truly comfortable with taking my car in and I think that's a rare feeling for people that do not know much about cars. His prices are about the same as most other car repair shops, but as another reviewer of this shop pointed out, his honesty is what sets him apart from most other mechanics. read more

After my car's alternator died I was in a bind as I needed to have the underdrive pulley from my old alternator transferred onto my new alternator. So, I drove all over town from one chain auto part store to several chain auto repair shops, but each one turned me away saying that while they could physically do the swap, corporate wouldn't allow them to unscrew the 1 nut (with an impact gun), swap the pulley and then tighten the bolt back up. So after a quick yelp search, I headed over to B&H where they not only agreed to do the work, but did it right away- no waiting at all. In less than 5 minutes I was back on the road and they were great. They quoted me a great price and they know their stuff and they will treat you right! read more

I come here at least once every six months for some form of maintenance. belts, pulleys, inspections, etc. currently, its a transmission flush. having grown up in an automotive family and in the dyno lab at federal mogul, I can do most of these tasks myself - but with sam's fair prices, I just come here because its easily worth me not filling my garage with soot, covering my face with grease, having to dispose of fluids, etc. if you have a car issue as small as windshield solvent needing to be filled...or as large as a radiator blowout, this place will take care of you. sam is honest, really knows his stuff, and the prices are exceptionally fair. as an experienced performance/maintenance mechanic I can vouch for the fact that sam will never give you the runaround. this is especially great if you aren't too mechanically savvy a vehicle owner. read more

I called on the phone and spoke with the owner Sam. He was very kind and had a calm demeanor. I asked him how long it would be to do a oil change and he told me to come around a certain time and he could get me in and out in 30 minutes. When I got there I waited in his shop and he was done in under 25. He was honest about what I needed and what I didn't need and even filled up my tires for me! B&H is one of those neighborhood places that really takes care of the customer. The work is always quality, and the price is always substantially cheaper than anywhere else. I needed new bearings on my front left tire and was told by Car-ex that it would be over $500. When we called Sam at B&H, he said $360 and when he finished in a couple of hours the price didn't change like at other places. I'll take a hundred and forty dollar savings any day. The works top notch and fast, and you never feel like your getting screwed. It's really hard to find an honest and reasonably priced mechanic, and this one is legit. read more

This was my first experience with Sam and I will definitely be back. I had been slightly smelling fuel for a while but have procrastinated in fixing it. It got a lot worse over this horrible winter. During an oil change, Midas smelled it and said that I needed to repair/replace the fuel rail ($400 parts/labor) and it would take a week to receive the part. They wanted me to agree to it right there so that they could order the part immediately. I decided to take it into B & H because of the great reviews and Sam told me that it was actually the fuel regulator, not the fuel rail. He had the parts so he just fixed it that day. The fuel smell was mostly gone when I picked up my car and completely gone the next day. I can't remember the last time I was able to open my window without smelling gas! The best part was, since I was at my nephew's birthday party and couldn't make it back before he closed... Sam let me pay over the phone with my credit card.
