I had a very formal wedding to attend and needed to find somebody that can style my hair "retro" style. I thought it would be a hard task since my hair is thick and curly! Emily cut washed, dried and styled my hair. I had the cool waves going and my hair looked fabulous! I got so many compliments that night. You know I had to talk Emily and the salon up! I got my hair and make-up done at Wak Shack Salon for my June 9th 2012 wedding. My bridesmaids also got their hair and make-up done, and I just have to say that Emily and Adam did a fantastic job!!!! I felt like a movie star and so did all of my bridesmaids. I had a 1940's pin up themed wedding and both of these fabulous stylists/artists made these looks for my gals and myself supersede my expectations. I do burlesque is NYC and work in the night life, so drama is my life. Both of them were able to create that kind of drama in a more glamorous way that was still totally me. To all those brides out there in the San Francisco area that are looking for a way to get those 1920's -1950's looks, please book with these two or any of the wak shack stylists. I have seen some people I've come in contact with in SF with interesting haircuts. I asked them where they got their haircut. It was Glama-Rama and B Parlor...so this time I tried B Parlor. I called them and set up an appointment and I was going to pay $60, so I got set up with Justin. They immediately explained their level or tier service options. Justin is the only one in the $60 category. Today I went in and got my haircut. It's just a trim for Asian hair. Nothing spectacular, but as you know hair grows, so you have to maintain it. He said my hair seemed dry at the tips. We also talked about caramel balayage and a beach wave perm. The salon was well-kept. It was a decent experience. My previous haircut was at T/M in Hayes. 25 years, 9 months, 27 days. That's how long I existed on this planet before Janine gave me the best haircut of my life. My hair is incredibly thick and heavy, and I always keep it long. For years, I lost bobby pins and snapped hair ties while trying to get it out my face. I managed, but it was mostly because I never knew anything different. When I would go in for a cut, I'd always say, "Keep as much of the length as possible, but please cut off whatever's dead." (Okay, I should be getting trims more often than every 9 months, but that's not what we're here to talk about.) Somehow, Janine heard me say that, ran her hands through my hair, and immediately realized that what I actually wanted was some long layers that enhanced my hair's natural wave and less weight overall. This is the first time I've gotten a haircut that actually made my hair feel lighter. The first time! The texture is exactly the same, but a literal weight has been lifted off my shoulders (and neck). It used to take my hair 3 or 4 hours to air dry; now it's closer to 30 minutes. And the chunky natural wave that I love so much frames my face perfectly. Anyone with thick hair who wants something simple and smart yet still transformative should go see Janine right now. When I moved back to the Bay after a long hiatus I stumbled upon an appointment with Sammy Pasion, thinking I'd try a few folks out before settling on someone I trust with my hair. Turns out I got very lucky on the first try! Since then Sammy has given me two *excellent* cuts and a great highlight that have all grown out really well. I haven't left a review in a very long time but needed to for this one. I found this place on yelp and made an appointment for 3:30. I called on my way saying I would be late 10 min and the receptionist said no problem, my stylist Amanda was also running late. She said, "while I have you on the phone, can you come in at 4?" I said no, I chose 3:30 because I had plans right after. She said no problem. When I get there, the receptionist told me Amanda was going to be another 20 min! 10 min was fine, I could have been a bit late to my event but half an hour was pretty ridiculous. The girl said Amanda could do half the service I requested with a discount, but at that point I didn't want to give them my money anymore. She should have told me on the phone she was going to be that late otherwise I would have cancelled, since I cancelled another appt for this one. I'm kinda bummed about Wak Shack! However, there are many great qualities about this salon. The salon itself is located in a convenient area of Lower Haight, the receptionists are always nice and friendly and willing to squeeze me in last minute. Not to mention, Emily, the stylist I went to 3 x's is friendly and personable + does amazing things with hair and has great style. I thought this would be the salon and stylist I could commit to, but after my last visit, I was sort of turned off and decided to keep looking for a different stylist/salon. My first visit to this salon was a total fixer-upper appointment. The previous stylist I went to destroyed my high-light job and gave me a very skunky, uneven 'do. Emily totally fixed it and made my blonde highlights look very natural and beautiful. I was totally pleased with the outcome and she only charged me $140.00 for full highlights and toner on long, thick hair. A few months later I went back to touch up my roots. Emily was cool as usual, but she was super rushed. She scheduled someone half way into my appointment and I just felt ignored while I was there. A different stylist finished the job and at the end Emily charged me the same price as a full head highlight ($140.00). I know she added some new pieces, but I didn't think it was worth the price, plus I left with my hair still damp. On my way out - Emily shouted to me from across the salon that she forgot to charge me for toner and that next time I'd be charged more. I wanted to talk to her about how I felt and ask why she was charging me more this time for less work, but she was in the middle of styling a new client, plus I felt pretty butt hurt about my whole experience, so I just wanted to pay and leave. I just visited the wak shack yesterday. I haven't had my hair professionally cut in 10 years. I have curly (not kinky) white girl hair and I saw kendra, she cut and colored my frizzy head of hay like a pro I asked for a short fun cut but didn't know the specifics and she did an awesome job! It was serendipitous that I called and got the only curly haired stylist working that day. She also waxed my eyebrows and literally an hour after I left the salon, I got a compliment on them. I was really happy with my cut here, but the front desk service has me really ticked off!! They told me I would get a call a day in advance, reminding me of my appointment. I didn't. That was fine, I remembered. HOWEVER I recommended Wak Shack to my friend and she scheduled an appointment for a Monday. She doesn't live in Lower Haight like I do, so it's slightly less convenient for her. She showed up for her appointment, and they claimed that she was in the books for the day before, despite the fact that she had an appointment card with the time / date written on it ... AND THEY ARE CLOSED SUNDAYS! They should have accommodated her. OK, everyone makes mistakes, so she rescheduled for the following day. 20 minutes before she's supposed to be there for her appointment - and as she's getting off the 22 bus at Fillmore - she gets a call saying that the guy is out sick. Poor service. I will NEVER refer anyone here again. Get your act together!! read more

I made my appointment using their online booking 4 months in advance... When I got there they washed my hair and gave me a haircut first then did my root color which had to process then she dried my hair so she could do the bayalage--backwards booking and bizarrely unnecessary. I was there for 7 and a half hours! I was expecting 3 maybe 4. Not the treatment I expected especially considering I saved up for 4 months to drop some major money ($400)! I've worked in the industry, so I know that this wasn't ok service, and they kind of took advantage of me. I caution anyone to check the length of their appointment if they're getting a color service. The front desk needs to check the online bookings to make sure they're correctly booked for efficiency and the stylist needs to check their schedule too. I understand that stylists need to take other clients in between long color appointments, but sitting at a salon from open to close wasn't worth some highlights. After the assistant finished my final blowout the stylist did some rushed last minute cutting of my hair which made me pretty uneasy too. Would have rather come in another day/time. Hair turned out just okay. Ultimately they lost a client. read more

I originally wasn't going to leave a review, but after seeing how my hair has progressed and some experiences I feel as if I had to. Now, let me just say that I was extremely happy with how my hair first started out. I had it dyed an awesome silver and Michael did a fantastic job. My hair was is a very dark natural black and I have a ton of it, so dying my hair silver was naturally a task I wanted to leave to a professional. It cost me around $400, a little more than I had anticipated but price I was ready to pay. However, after a week and a half I started getting a little blonde at the tips after two shampoo washes. I went back in to see if he could help me out. He did and started putting some more dye stuff on my hair. I was in the salon for around 2 and a half hours while the process was getting done. When all was said and done, the blonde still wasn't all out of my hair! I was a little disappointed, but at least it looked better than before. Once again, I am aware that dying hair is a tricky process, especially silver. I had scheduled to appointment under touch up because well, that's what I figured it was. So when it was time to go, they charged me the $81 I left the tip and I headed home. Lo and behold I get a call 45 minutes later saying that they made a mistake, had not charged me enough, and wanted me to come back in and pay another $70 for a balayage! I couldn't believe it! Not only did he not fix my hair, I was supposed to return and drop another $70 for a mediocre treatment. Now my the tips of my hair have progressively gotten more yellow and I have a session scheduled with another salon in the Mission to try and rectify the color. I've read lots of great things about Michael's cutting abilities and after sitting in the salon for 7 hours and watching him cut other peoples hair, i can also testify to that. As for crazier colors? I'm left disappointed. And really? Calling me back and asking for more money after an incomplete job? C'mon B Parlor. read more

Amanda did a great job on my gloss and cut. My highlights were too light and orange when I walked in. She used an ash brown that really toned down the brassiness. I also get nervous when I have to get my hair cut because I've had so many hair stylists cut it too short. I explained that I wanted to keep as much length as possible but needed to cut my split ends. Everything came out better than expected. Will definitely return. read more

Being new to the neighborhood, it was my first time at B Parlor today and I must say Emily is one of the best hair stylists I've worked with in San Francisco! I was sooo excited to try out the Wak Shack...but in the end...i didn't like my hair much. It was just blahhh....My highlights were uneven and it didnt even touch my roots...i think she left like a good half inch to the scalp...so now my hair looks like its been growing out for about a month when i JUST got it done. I'm still on my mission to find a good hairstylist.....arghh...so frustrating when you pay so much for your hair! I also got a hair cut too...and i was looking for an edgy look with punkish layers & side swept bangs....but it was no where near that. I was already in there for over 4 hours, so I had no time left to wait around ....so I just had to deal with it. After extensive Yelp research, I decided on Wak Shack, based on the reviews. The salon theme is retro pin-up girl cool and everyone is very friendly and sweet. Emily is my girl! I've seen her for everything from highlights to keratin treatments and she also gives great cuts. She listens, injects her opinion when asked, and uses her professional judgment to work her magic. AWESOME customer service. I have personally never gotten a haircut here so I cannot speak on the cuts, but I have purchased my Layrite pomade here. I typically buy from a salon in Oakland where, when walking in, you sense attitude and some type of entitlement; they are also borderline rude because I am only buying their product. Today Wak Shack really caught me off guard. Called ahead of time to ensure they have it, whomever I spoke to was very charismatic and friendly. When I arrived, another staff member checked me out (the product, guys) and made small talk, smiled and the whole shop was welcoming/warm. This is pretty rare for a salon... muchless on haight street. This is my new go-to in SF for my product and, if it ever came to it, I could confidently get my cut here as well. Claudia is great! My hair is thicker than it looks with just enough of a wave to make it harder to cut. Claudia listened to what I had to say and what I wanted, made a couple of thoughtful suggestions, and proceeded to give me a great cut. I've been going to the Wak Shack for about a year now. First went to Simon and then on to Kendra. Both of them are great. Kim (the owner) is very nice, as well. They've recently remodeled the place, and it now has a nice open, spacious feel. All of the cuts I've had there have been great. These guys are fun to be around and are talented, and they don't push the product on you too much. I have a great time shooting the breeze and catching up with Kendra while she does my do. It's in the Lower Haight, which is one of my favorite neighborhoods. Only a couple blocks from the MUNI stop at Duboce Park, and easy walking distance to other fine Lower Haight establishments like Groove Merchant and Toronado. read more

This place rocks. I've been getting my color and cuts here about a year or so and discovered it when CJ started working here. I seriously enjoy interacting with every person that works here! Everyone is extremely pleasant and professional at the salon. They are ::really:: into their careers and you can tell. The passion is palpable. I love the entire shop too, from the local artists they feature to the amazing books about hair to the toolboxes they use for their supplies. Each detail completely complements the vibe of this place. I'm amazed at the small details I notice each time I go in there. I've been seeing CJ for a few years, and she's absolutely amazing. She's professional and damn that lady has some serious hair skills. Words that have come out of my mouth: "Girl, I trust you more than my BF. Do yo thang" When she first started doing my hair, CJ took the time to really ask questions about what my hair is like on regular days and how much I want to spend styling it. I'd never had someone ask me those kinds of questions but it turned out to really pay off. It's to the point where we even have creative color themes (90's grunge, chicken, fox) and my hair comes out fabulous every time. She has never made a mistake with my hair. This lady is a serious colorist who's a total expert in Wella color. She's always making crazy custom color cocktails to go along with my ridiculous themes. I'm greeted by name every time I walk in the door and there's never that awkward moment of standing around being like..umm what do I do now. I have super curly hair and have been driving from sf to Los Gatos to get it cut for the past 3 years. It's always been a completely stress filled experience to make a switch. At the Wak Shack, people were so friendly and helpful. I was ready to chop off my hair and Kendra let me know she didn't think that would be the way to go. She had a cancellation and so I decided to put myself in her capable hands. 3 hours later, I walked out with so-good-smelling hair, a great cut and great color. First off, let me say that I've had fabulously long hair for about seven years. My discision to cut it was based on the fact that it was also fabulously unstylish. Needless to say, I was a little apprehensive to cut because as so many boyfriends before had uttered, "your long hair is like soo hot." After a long relationship with Mr. Wrong, it was time for me to do something for myself. I searched long and hard for the right salon and stylist to cut my hair right and launch me into singlehood. After talking with Erin at the Wak Shack, I finally felt comfortable enough to begin the process of severing my emotional connection with my locks. I haven't been to Wak Shack yet but I'm giving these 5 stars to their newest addition, CJ Poelman. CJ is the only stylist I've seen since I moved to San Francisco 2 years ago. Why I love her: 1. She's a no BS kind of girl. She will tell you that blue, even though it's your favorite color, will not work on your super-dark Asian hair because it will turn it green, or make it work by lightening your hair to the point where it's completely fried. This kind of honesty assures me that everything CJ does is in my best interests (i.e. looking good + healthy hair) 2. That said, CJ respects my requests as a client. The first time I saw her, I told her I'm super low-maintenance and low-budget when it comes to hair, and wanted a 'safe' haircut that would last me a while. She promised me a haircut that would grow out subtly so I didn't have to come back too many times for trims -- My haircut stayed neat and beautiful for a long time, and I didn't have to go back until almost a year later. 3. She's clearly versatile. She's given my friend outrageously funky hair, and is just as skilled when it comes to giving me elegant, work-appropriate styles. 4. She's also just fun to be around. Ask her about her hometown ;) No need for magazines to kill time when you're getting your hair done by CJ. I have yet to get my hair colored by CJ, mostly because I've been in a "natural hair color" phase. But I've seen several examples of her amazing color work on my friend Jerry -- each time it's original and a complete departure from the last, while staying true Jerry's style and personality. I've been a long-time client of CJ's and I've never been disappointed. Wak Shack is lucky to have CJ, and I'll go wherever CJ goes so I'll be paying them a visit soon :) read more

She took such good care of my hair and took her time making sure the color was applied perfectly. She then showed me how to style it and what products to use, which I've had a hard time getting other stylists to spend time doing that in the past. Such a relief to find a good stylist. My hair has been so many different shades of red in the past that some people began to mistake me for Mrs. Garret on "The Facts of Life." Ouch. If you've ever had fake red hair, you know how difficult it is to maintain. Either it fades out completely after the first wash, or knowing this, you hold off on washing it for so long people begin to think you've been moonlighting as a fry cook at KFC. Either way, you eventually end up looking like Howdy Doody in drag. Ouch. Kimberly has somehow come up with a magic formula that prevents all of the above. By week 4, my hair is still a lovely shade of shiny crimson. In fact, I get compliments on my hair nearly every day. I'm not kidding, it's really that often. As a guy in San Francisco, I find it hard to get a good hair cut. I'd tried various "cool" places that had good recommendations, but I always ended up buzzing my hair when I got home because they messed it up pretty bad. I tried the Wak Shak at the suggestion of a coworker. I now have a very coveted thing: a hair salon that I'll be going to for years. They are super cool and accomodating. The stylists are awesome, down-to-earth people who aren't pretentious ONE BIT. That's the best part. They chat with you like you're a human being and not a lump of hair. They'll work with you on designing a cut or they'll follow whatever you ask of them. I highly recommend this place for guys. This is a salon you can walk into and not feel utterly inundated with feminine crap (no offense, ladies), if that sort of thing bugs you or, if you're like me, makes you feel absolutely out of place. B Parlor is amazing! Great vibe and atmosphere. I was offered water, tea, or coffee immediately upon my arrival and check-in. The place is super spacious and clean. The best part was my amazing haircut from Janine! I have very fine hair and I was growing it out before my wedding. I went somewhere else and they took some off but I had really blunt layers. Catie is the best! She has been cutting my hair in SF for nearly 3 years (and I even used to get my haircut years before from Catie when we both lived in Ohio -- and did I miss my haircuts when she left for SF!). Catie is very detail oriented and does a great job giving me the look I'm going for. Each time I leave with a high quality haircut where it also grows out evenly resulting in less needed haircuts. Emily McKeever is the best! I never trust anyone to even touch my hair, but I will let Emily have her way with it. She really listens to what you want and inputs what she knows will work best with your type of hair without ever being pushy. Upon referral from a friend, I made a longstanding appointment with a new to me stylist to do haircut and brow wax - it was confirmed yesterday by text. Now called *within and hour of the appointment* (by a scheduler) to significantly move the appointment and with a different stylist because they (apparently just realized) were backed up on a color. I didn't accept the alternative and reschedule. I understand business and scheduling is difficult on occasion, but perhaps they have an established customer base and don't need new clients at this time. Do your hair a favor and get it cut by Simon- he is awesome. A lot of times stylists don't really know what I mean when I say "low maintenance". This means I roll out of bed in the morning, wash my hair, and go to work. This means my hairstyle must happen with no intervention on my part. Simon really gets it.
