Upon referral from a friend, I made a longstanding appointment with a new to me stylist to do haircut and brow wax - it was confirmed yesterday by text. Now called *within and hour of the appointment* (by a scheduler) to significantly move the appointment and with a different stylist because they (apparently just realized) were backed up on a color. I didn't accept the alternative and reschedule. I understand business and scheduling is difficult on occasion, but perhaps they have an established customer base and don't need new clients at this time. I literally got my haircut 2 hours ago but had to immediately leave a review. Justin is a MAGICIAN. He gave me the most perfect cut and showed me how to style it. First off, I had long sad hair that needed some TLC. He listened to what I was looking for and gave me an overview of what he was going to do. From there he worked his magic and was incredibly easy to talk to. I'm so used to doing my hair the same way with the same results. He showed me new ways to give my hair L I F E and volume. Do your hair a favor and get it cut by Simon- he is awesome. A lot of times stylists don't really know what I mean when I say "low maintenance". This means I roll out of bed in the morning, wash my hair, and go to work. This means my hairstyle must happen with no intervention on my part. Simon really gets it. Today he gave me a great haircut that looks stylie (for me, anyway!) without even so much as a blow dry. Also I don't feel pressured to buy a bunch of product when I am there, which rocks. I hate the typical hair product sales pitch at the end of a cut, especially since, if the stylist was listening, they would know already that I am a product free zone. read more

I love the Wak Shack. I've been going here since about 2004. I've only had Kimberley as a stylist but I've noticed all of the other stylist are very professional and there work is also top notch. I get my hair cut and highlighted by Kimberley and every time I love her work!!! My hair is very fine and it easily gets weighed down. DO NOT EVER go here for bangs. I've seen two different stylists - the 1st insisted I had a cowlick after I had been in a headband for 3 weeks - and against my appeal cut my hair as if I did, leaving me with a long chunk of bangs a few days later. The second stylist did not section the bangs off, and ended up skipping more than a few hairs. I've been having to snip away at my hair for the past two mornings to even things out. Unless you want to cut your own hair after you pay for someone else to do it, don't go this place! read more

I bought the Keratin special back in I think Feb or March and finally got in a few days ago. I've been here many times before with my boyfriend who gets his hair regularly cut by Kim and I've had a bang trim or two here but I didnt even know they did the Keratin treatment so I was way stoked! I had my appointment with Michael - he did a fabulous job - i've had the treatment done before (see my review on Thermal Reconditioning specialists) but something is different this time, after my washed out my hair it is still stick straight and shiny as heck! I know it won't last but this time I actually do see quite a difference after the wash! amazing! And the 3 1/2 hours went by quick! Heather.... guuuurrrrrrrl, you did an awesome job on my bleached faux hawk! Everyone loves it at work and also the boys in choir had lots of nice comments. This Salon is really cool and all the artists are friendly and fun to talk to. This one dude had the coolest white dress shoes and Heather has awesome tattoos. Everyone has great hair, of course. No one looks like they hate their job. I saw a lot of great hair creations done before my eyes, which were half covered by my nappy long hair when I first stepped in. I left feeling younger and a lot cuter, certainly lighter. I usually have a beauty school friend with a home salon do my hair. She always does a great job too; she has had a lot of practice on me. Heather got it right the first time with just some general instructions and ideas. And my look has some of her style put into it as well. Awesome! My friend is about $50 cheaper, but I expected that since a salon has more overhead and such. I did get the full salon treatment and my hair pulled a lot more easily with the magical steam helmet. read more

Heather is THE lady for waxing, and Kat was the lady for hair. Unfortunately for me, Kat has now moved, but I will still continue to go back to Wak Shack for all my hair needs. Wak Shack is a cool space with a very pin-up girl style, which is a bit different from my own look, but I can still appreciate it- especially when every detail down to the hair style "museum" and 40s/50s photos, etc. Oh, and they have mimosas for early day Saturday appointments- that won me over right there. I'll continue to go to Wak Shack, because my favorite stylist, CJ just joined the staff there. I have been getting my hair done by CJ for years now and she walked me through very short cuts (which scared me at first, but she walked me through it) hair color- from natural blonde to brunette and back. CJ knows hair, and never fails to keep up an interesting conversation. I've referred dozens of my friends to her over the years, and now they are all loyal believers in the magic of CJ! read more

I needed to do something positive after my last review of Yellow Cab left me bitter and heartbroken. Thankfully I had a great experience at B Parlor over the weekend, and that seems to be helping me push through the pain. I'm not the easiest client in the world - I know what I want (kind of), but I want you to tell me what you think (not really), especially if you have the experience to back it up (it doesn't matter). And I have the unfortunate habit of holding on to things, and as much as you should let go of the past, it's never easy. Even if it IS just hair. But bless Emily for existing, because she navigated my crazy so perfectly. In response to my request for bangs, she told me her job was to make me look pretty (in other words, no bangs - thank God), so we explored the idea of layers instead. When we started talking about length, she listened to me panic a bit before simply letting me know, "We could do up to four inches and still be okay." I HADN'T CUT MY HAIR FOR SIX MONTHS. For crying out loud, I'm fairly sure there was a family of ferrets living at the base of my neck. May I just say that I love a person who treats your hair like it's a team effort? Emily had this wonderful "We're in this together" mentality that just relaxed the heck out of me. Not to mention her low-pressure sales vibe and the fact that she genuinely wanted me to look great. Ultimately, the fact that she knew how good she was good at her job meant that I didn't have to question anything she was doing. That was pretty awesome. A few more small details - great location, great product line (Bumble & Bumble dry shampoo FTW), flexible hours on a Sunday, super friendly staff. And for what they do and how well they listen to you, the price is incredibly fair. Oh, and HUGE compliments to the amazing girl at the front desk - I feel like such a wang for not remembering her name because she went out of her way to know mine. Emily is awesome! I had never had my hair colored before (shocking I know) and I was really excited but nervous to get it done. She was so great, totally helped me shape my ideas, and totally honest about what would look good, what would work, etc.....Also, she was super patient, I have a TON of hair and it took like 4hrs, but she was with me the whole way through and did a great job. I also got my hair cut, which looks awesome. I would absolutely go back here. It's got a great vibe, and I really like that serve you drink and let dogs hang out. Kim does a good job cutting my hair, and she charges me less than my previous cutters. Before my first haircut with her, she took the time to ask what I liked and didn't like. She also asked follow up questions, so she was paying attention and not just going throught the motions. She noticed that my shampoo was irritating the back of my head and recommended something less harsh (and I was using that pricey Kiehl's stuff because I thought it was better.) These stars are for my girl, Emily. After about five years growing out the 'ol mane, I decided on a whim to take about a foot off the other day. She's been my go-to gal for about a year now, and has always done a great job. Her most amazing atribute is to listen to exactly what I say I want and work with me from there. My hair is that huge, not completely curly, definitely not straight, frizzy mess that I know many of ya'll deal with. Well, I'm almost a week into my new do and I ADORE it. She opted for a dry cut, so she was able to cut with the natural wave of my hair, and I literally don't have to do anything to it. I just spritz in some curl spray and walk out the door. The salon itself is fun, laid back, and in a great location - where I can run to grab a bite after a cut. I can book online which is a must, and the front desk girls are knowledgable and beyond cool. After moving to the bay area a couple of months ago, I was starting to feel pretty shaggy. I had some friends in the area who had stylists they liked, but I really wasn't feeling it. Enter Yelp. I was looking for a place that was reasonably priced, with a trendy, fun, stylish vibe. Tattoo-chic. Thanks, Yelp, you got it right with this one. I had my appointment with Kat. There was a slight mix-up at the start of my appointment, but it was due to the client before me and NOT Kat. Kat made sure to get my appointment started quickly. She did a fantastic job with my hair! She was friendly and sweet, and made my hair look exactly how I wanted. Once I can afford to start getting it professionally colored, she'll be my girl. I recently got my hair cut and styled for an upcoming wedding and I am thrilled with the results! I made a same day appointment and scored the owner of the salon, Filomena, as my stylist! I am in the process of growing out my hair and I felt like she really respected my wishes to keep it as long as possible. I've always been one of those girls who are extremely anal about people who work on my hair. I'm super picky and my hair is coarse and thick - I've actually nicknamed it "the lioness". Since my hair is so temperamental, it takes a longggg time to find someone who can work with me and my fuzzy mane. Anywho, I started coming to the Wak Shack a year or two ago when Michael was still here. He did a FABULOUS job and kept me coming back. Unfortunately, Michael up and left me high and dry, so when I had to go back in to get my roots touched up and my hair cut, I was left lonely and confused because I didn't know who else to go to! Well luckily, I asked the receptionist who she would recommend me to with my fluffy lioness-like mane, and she booked an appointment for me with CJ. I go into my appointment somewhat nervous because I wasn't sure how awesome CJ actually was, but needless to say, I had nothing to worry about. CJ was really understanding and took the time to listen to what I wanted done to my hair. She's definitely not one of those stylists that take off three inches when you came in for a trim. Anyway, I described the color I wanted for my highlights and because Michael never really wrote down my mixture, CJ mixed a new shade for me which turned out wonderfully. After she finished my highlights, she cut my hair and thinned it out a little for me. She took her time and really takes pride in her work. It was supposed to be a trim, but because my hair was so thick, it looked like a haircut, haha. Anyway, she chatted with me and we had a good time laughing and talking about hair salon conversation topics. With that being said, I'll definitely be seeing CJ again in the near future! Since my hair is so... lively, it is often difficult to dye and to cut, but it wasn't a problem here. Although their prices are relatively pricey, I'd rather pay the price and receive a great job rather than paying a lot less and receiving something that I may be unhappy and dissatisfied with. UPDATE - I have been seeing Kim for well over two years now and I couldn't reccomend her more highly. I have had simple blow-outs, great cuts, beautiful color, and a very chic updo. I rec'd so many compliments for my updo at a recent wedding that I will never let anyone else bobby pin my hair. Just went to see Kim for the first time. And she did an excellent job. She was great at assessing the situation, and then asked lots of questions about what I had done to my hair in the past, how I was caring for it, what I liked about it, what I didn't, etc. I really got the sense that she was processing all the info to give me the cut an color that would not just look good but solve any hair woes. I have pretty short hair, but even short-haired gals need a trim every six weeks. You'd think that short hair would be easy to cut, but the last few places I tried were really expensive and didn't do a very good job. I decided to give Wak Shack a try after seeing that some Twitter pals went here and then reading the positive Yelp reviews. Michael cut my hair and he did a fabulous job of cleaning up the last mess that was made. He wasn't afraid to actually cut my already short hair shorter and wasn't trying to change me. (A lot of stylists try to make me grow my hair out, but he recognized that I actually look *good* in short hair and can rock it!) Best of all, the price was right. This was the best cut I've had in a long time and it was only $55 (instead of the $75 to $95 range that I'm used to paying). The only drawback is the parking, but that's par for the course in this area (and almost everywhere in San Francisco). If I didn't need my car, I'd probably take the bus. P.S. I had a fantastic hair cut experience at Wak Shack. My stylist Kat gave me some good ideas for a cut since I had no idea what I really wanted to do. But she knew! So we talked about it and worked out a plan. On top of knowing a lot about cutting hair, she knew all about the products she was using, AND she was upbeat and personable! I was so impressed and felt like she gave me her full attention. When I was all finished, she helped me pick out the best products to use and how to use them (since I really had no idea). We also talked about color for my hair, so I might have to schedule another appointment with her soon! Wak Shak gets five stars for their waxing services. Easy Brazilians, and really fabulous eyebrows. They lose two for being closed on Sundays. I work full time, hella hours and have one (1) day to treat myself. Is it a San Francisco thing that people in, you know, service-oriented businesses can't see the value in being open when salarypeople can actually come in?! i had the same problem with my first mechanic. Emily rules! Tired of dropping $11 on fifteen dollah haircuts (that's four whole dollars of savings!), I'd solicited a referral to the Wak Shack by a former roommate. So last Monday, I dropped in without an appointment & they sat me down 45 minutes later. The only direction I gave her was "keep it shortish & layer it, otherwise, just make me look awesome". I look a little boyish (though that's unavoidable -- happens with every short haircut I've ever gotten), & it was a little expensive (though I knew what I was getting myself into, so nothing against the WS there). Filomena is the best!!! I drive all the way from Palo Alto to get my hair cut by her. A friend recommended me to her 5 years ago and I've been a loyal customer since. She takes such pride in her work and makes sure that it's just prefect. She knows my hair and the various styles I've had throughout the years. She's taken me from long to short to long and now back to short again. I trust her so much that I let her chop of about 12" of my hair last year and I LOVE it. I've kept it short for a year. Now that my hair's short I refuse to go anywhere but to Filomena since it's so easy to jack up short hair. My only complaint (and it's not even a real one) is that she's always so busy. And if I forget to schedule my next appointment right away, sometimes I have to wait weeks before I can see her again. read more

Beware of discounted Keratin treatments... Not terrible but not great either. I went to Wak Shack based on the Keratin straightening treatment promotion that was offered on Yelp a few months. I was very excited to get the treatment and the salon seemed to have good reviews. However I have to say I was not impressed with the Keratin treatment. My hair looked great until I washed it and then I didn't notice much difference. My hair was a little straighter after blow drying and flat ironing and putting smoothing serum in it. But I had to do all that before the treatment. Disappointed I called the owner and told her about my concerns with the treatment. She said she had never seen a Keratin treatment that didn't work. However when I went in to show her, she agreed the treatment didn't take and would do it again. Guess there's a first time for everything? On a positive note they did redo the treatment for free, which was awesome. But again after the 72 hour period of no washing, using products, or touching my hair in general; I found about the same results as the first time. I give them a three because they do redo the treatment for free. But I would have rather have paid full price for one treatment that worked great, instead of half price two treatments that kind of worked a little. read more

I went to Heather for a facial, my first time at the Wak Shack and it was a nice experience. The facial was very relaxing, the steam did not suffocate me, the extractions hurt like hell but the job was done! She did the best neck stretch and massage, I didn't want that to stop. I will go back. Only one complaint, can they put a chair for the guest in the facial room? I had no place to put my clothes or to sit and put my shoes back on. Michael really does bring out the inner rock star in people. I get the same haircut, everytime (graduated bob), which I love, but honestly, I'm not Anna Wintour and sometimes a girl needs a change. Right off the bat, he was offering suggestions, mixing it up, and taking things in a new direction. He took time to cut my hair and wasn't afraid to modify accordingly as he went along. Long overdue review for the salon and Michael specifically! When I moved to San Francisco a few years back I felt pretty lucky to have B Parlor right down my street. They have a really fun vibe and all the stylists and staff are helpful and friendly. And every client I see walking out of the salon looks faaaabulous. The full 5 out of 5 stars is because of some excellent customer service! I decided one day I really wanted to dye my hair light pink. Only problem is I have pretty fine hair so it doesn't do well with bleaching even though I know that would help bring out color later on. Michael put together a few dyes and tried a couple toners but the pink just wasn't sticking. He could have then easily sent me on my way with not so awesome hair, but instead he spent extra time redoing the color for a fun "unicorn" blonde. He also insisted I would not be charged for the extra toner. They really care about their clients here! If you live in the lower haight, or really anywhere in the city, go to B Parlor for your next cut and color. Fun conversation, chill vibes, good music, excellent hair care! read more

Filomena is a hair cutting goddess. I came to her (after scouring yelp reviews) to save my hair from an unfortunate mullet incident. Seriously unfortunate. She was phenomenal, listened to my concerns about not wanting to go too short, figured out the best way to blend my layers, explained what she was doing every step of the way, and on top of it she was really friendly and personable. It ended up being a two haircut process to get back to a semi-normal 'do, and it's growing out beautifully. Plus, I no longer look like Billy Ray, so everybody wins. read more

This review is based on Heather.....she did my hair in a Betty Paige style cut. Every time I get my hair done no matter where, they manage to mess up the short blunt bang look I try so hard for. Heather nailed it. She's defiantly a hair rock star. You can see in her style she knows what she's doing. She was so nice and patient, never getting annoyed that she ended up spending hours with me just trying to lighten the layers of black that were caked into my hair. She pulled that off as well. Legit. my favorite salon in the neighborhood. Adam knows curls like it's nobody's business and actually takes his TIME to get to know your hair and what it's capable of. Cliche and semi-obnoxious, I know, but it's true. Plus, everyone is super friendly an accomodating, totally willing to work with what YOU want instead of what THEY think will look good on you. Of course you can engage in banter back and forth regarding suggestions but ultimately, you have the final say and I love that about Wak Shack-- they're not too arrogant to take a step back. Not only do I get the best cuts in years, but also a view of the city's most beautiful tattoos (the lady's have beautiful ink) and I can't help but stare, being a femme-loving san franciscan lesbo and all. I had been in the city for about 2 months and really needed a hair cut and chose Wak Shack Salon based on yelp reviews. I am really glad I did. After reading a ton of reviews and looking at their website, I decided to go with Emily because I liked how her stylings sounded. She is amazing. I love what she did with my cut. I loved it so much, that about a month later I went back in to get color streaks. She did a fantastic job. She took what I wanted and then gave me some absolutely fabulous advice to spice up the hair style even more while keeping it subtle. Which is exactly what I wanted. This review is less about the result of my appointment and purely customer experience / how I felt walking out of the salon. I came in for a toner appointment and made sure to *specifically* confirm the price in advance ($40), since the previous time I came there was an extra treatment added in without my knowledge. Great. I was pleased with the result of the treatment and stylist's work, however upon finishing and checking out at the front desk, I was given a $105 charge. Well, I thought to myself.. "ok, I had the blowout, which I didn't necessarily ask for but was necessary to see the result.. and sure that justifies a bit extra..." a $45 surprise blowout + $40 toner also came with an extra $20 surprise extra color fee. I was never prompted or told about this during the procedure, and frankly probably would have been fine with it if I had been properly informed. When the receptionist went back to question my stylist about the extra $20, the stylist didn't even make eye contact with me standing in the front, or bother to come forward. I tipped and walked out the door - feeling quite uncomfortable- but immediately regretted not confronting her about this kind of poor customer service. I had a similar experience the last time I came, where some extra enhancement was added to my treatment without knowledge but came as a surprise at check-out. I'm not sure if these ladies are consciously trying to sneak extra line items in and hope no one notices, or if they are innocent mistakes. Despite this poor experience I'm not dissatisfied with the result of my toner but it certainly leaves a bad taste with me and I'll think again before going back. read more

Kendra took care of me. She listened to my wants and concerns, shot down a few of my ideas, and came up with a few of her own that I really liked. The wash and scalp massage were nice, and the cut was great. She gave excellent advice for my next DIY dye job, and gave me the soft sell on letting her do it next time (which is always preferable to domineering bitchiness and demands that customers pay homage to a stylists untouchable skills). I'd give it a fifth star, but I'm reserving judgement to see how I like the cut when it grows in. Plus, it was a bit pricey. read more
