So we ordered 2 lemongrass chicken, 1 each pastrami and the "special" (pork, pate, ham). Surprisingly the French bread was fresh and easy to bite through. I love Hawai'i Kai Ba-Le and the location that used to be on Ward Ave next to Sports Authority, back in the day. Tried this location for the first time, but unfortubately it was fail. First, the unfriendly counter lady, then cash only on top of no inside eating allowed (even though there are guest tables). Most importantly was the disappointing food. I ordered the BBQ chicken sandwich on croissant. Only the veggies and croissant itself were worth eating. The flavor and presentation of the bbq chicken was not good. I believe in treating others with the utmost respect. I called in an order which was pretty much a steamed pork sandwich. I told the woman I wanted a CHA LUA sandwich with everything just like the special combo. She did not understand when I said Cha LUA (I assumed they were Vietnamese) so "Steamed Pork" it is! I got there and I just wanted to make sure the order was correct. I asked if there was Pate in it and she said "no you said just the steamed pork". Mind you, my whole interaction with the woman was completely calm. No voices were raised, not even a stink eye... You could already tell she was just super grumpy to begin with. I'm not sure if that's just her natural demeanor and tone but she was simply just rude. I explained, "I mentioned the combo sandwich because I was trying to explain I wanted everything the same except JUST STEAMED PORK no ham/head cheese. Including the pate and all." No biggie - I asked her nicely if she could just add the pate in the sandwich. She said "no, I can't do that anymore." And then asked again if I could just have the pate on the side - I could just do it myself. She said "no, we don't do that". Saw that I had my card out and said, "we accept cash only". They only do take out, no sit down. Like everywhere else, their prices have increased. My faves are their shrimp rolls, spicy beef chow fun and banh mi. I can never understand why many of these places give you just a small container of sauce for the 2 shrimp rolls. I guess they want you to ask for an extra container just so they can charge you more. There simply is no comparison to Ba-Le Vietnamese iced coffee. My mom really enjoys their banh mi's which are always delicious. Sadly, I prefer some other Vietnamese places when it comes to food. My favorite Vietnamese dishes is usually just a plain "plate lunch" style dish with meat (lemongrass chicken is my favorite), white (jasmine) rice, and veggies. Ba-Le's lemongrass chicken was good, no doubt, but personally, I prefer the lemongrass chicken from a place called Saigon Noodle House. This is my wife's and my favorite go-to place in Kaneohe town. Very reasonable prices and yummy dishes. The couple that run the place are really honest, friendly and accommodating. This is a popular spot for lunch during weekdays but the service is still pretty quick. Not your swanky restaurant by any means. Just a simple restaurant that serves good food (lots of noodles and rice dishes besides sandwiches). The place is tiny with four tables so takeouts may be the way to go during busy times. They also take phone orders. If you live in Kaneohe and enjoy French sandwiches, rice and noodle dishes, this is a great place to check out. We stopped here for a quick snack after a walk around the botanical gardens. Haven't had a banh mi on the island yet so why not. We actually have a sandwich shop similar to this one in San Diego and it's also called Ba-Le lol. I ordered the "special" which is pretty much what i would order anywhere. Of course every place makes It differently, this one had pate (liver spread), ham, and the Vietnamese steamed pork roll and of course the pickled daikon radish/carrots cucumbers, and cilantro. Don't let the liver spread scare you away. This is what gives you the "authentic" taste. It has so much flavor you wouldn't even know It was liver. The pickled vegetables were a little too sweet for my taste, but I'm also not a fan of pickled daikon. As I said, the bread was so good. After my sandwich was put together, she put It in a toaster over to crisp up the outside and the inside was nice and warm. Soft, fluffy and crisp. Is It even a banh mi if the bread doesn't cut the rough of your mouth? Hahah. The only thing I will say is that It could've use a little more meat and I would've loved a few slices of jalapeño in there to tie It all together. I bought a really delicious sandwich here today, and it's sad to realize I missed out of this pleasure for so many years. (Note to myself: be more adventuresome and try new places! Life will be more enjoyable if you do!!) I have 4 whacko friends in Kaneohe. All work in the same office, and once a month I pay them a visit. We have a great deal. We all ordered sandwiches (Banh Mi), 4 tuna and 1 vegetarian, all on croissant bread. I phoned in the ordered and it was ready in about 10 minutes. Everyone at lunch commented on how wonderful the sandwiches tasted. The croissant rolls very fresh, big and fluffy. The tuna sandwiches were made with tuna and homemade mayo, lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese, jalapenos, onions, and spices. I'm getting hungry for another one just writing about it. One reviewer last year commented on the cleanliness, but I found the place ok and wouldn't mind eating here. It's an old building and a busy shop but not objectionable in my opinion. There are only 3 or 4 small tables, so if the place is busy it's better to order take-out. A lot of Kaneohe places are like this, and my secret is to drive to the Windward Mall food court and eat there. Works for me! The lady behind the counter is business like and someone thought she was unfriendly. But she's not rude, so I'm all for giving her a break. And I do remember several encounters with the owner's son while I waited for my food late in the afternoon as I was picking up dinner. The son was set up at a table doing his homework in the store waiting for the shop to close. He was like a 1st grader. So customers would often talk to him while just trying to be nice. Anyway turns out he was like a genius kid who went to Punahou and talking to him was like talking to a 15 year old. I remember one customer was going to read a book to him while she waited and she became so flustered while talking to him it was funny. "Look lady, that kid is smarter than the two of us put together." Hole in the wall: The kid must be fully grown by now but the shop is identical and hasn't changed a bit. Very tiny. Mom and Pop: Same couple runs the place and they close up early at 7:00pm. Always have. Service: Large menu. Tell the lady what you want and pay first. Cash Only! The husband cooks it quickly.
