Stopped in for a quick meal / so glad we did- the Banh mi sandwich was very good - the large slices of jalapeño could have been cut thinner but the beef was well flavored! The restaurant is small with limited seating, small staff so service can be a bit slow but our Banh Mi was good and I'd like to return to try other menu items. Tried this newly opened restaurant in Kailua. Nice ambiance and clean. Utensils and various sauces available near the cashier. Tried the noodles and Vietnamese manapua and was pleasantly surprised. The Vietnamese coffee was also delicious, but it took 40 minutes to prepare the coffee and they did not have take out cups. Headed to Down to Earth next door to buy a mug. Doubt I would return here. Price point is a bit steep compared to other Vietnamese restaurants. Service was ok, but it required effort, if you know what I mean. Spotted this gem while walking in Kailua town today, 5-15-25. Ordered the Summer rolls with tofu and the banh mi with vegan meat substitute. Summer rolls were very good, but maybe less Lettuce would make it better. The banh mi was also good with thinly sliced jalapeños and a nice vegan sauce so it wasn't dry. Most of their menu is built around vegan/veg options, which is very good for those who are trying to cut out animal proteins. They do offer chicken, if you want to add it to your sandwiches. We were in the neighborhood waiting for my son when this spot caught my eye--and I'm so glad it did! As I walked in to place an order, I was pleasantly surprised to see a familiar face--Frank! He was just as welcoming and professional as I remembered from his previous place of business. Frank is very customer-oriented, and it's clear that he genuinely cares about his customers' opinions and experiences. The restaurant itself is modern, bright, and very clean. This was our first time at Vietnam Deli. We were looking for a good, moderately priced Vietnamese restaurant with dine-in service and it turned out this wasn't it. To start out on a positive note, the staff was friendly and the restaurant interior had a modern, clean vibe. About the food: For a total of over $70 (!) my partner and I both ordered a pho each, one order of spring rolls and one ginger lemonade (8oz) to consume at the restaurant. The whole meal was served in to-go paper and plastic containers which ruined the whole dinner experience. The quantity of food was shocking for the price we paid and the quality was just ok. The phos came out early while the appetizer spring rolls didn't make it to the table until we had already finished 2/3 of our meal. The soup add-ons (basil, chili, sprouts, lemon) were provided in a plastic freezer bag. The rare steak was hopelessly tough, like shoe leather. The broth was flavorful though. The worst part of the meal were the spring rolls: six small, flavorless spring rolls, served with carrot, cucumber, and a pineapple of all things. The dish looked really loveless and without a concept. This place definitely missed the bar for us. The steep price tag does not pay off in the quality and quantity of food served at this eatery. For a $70 check, one could at least expect that real plates will be provided. We would have loved to give a small business a better review but the issues outweighed the overall experience. read more

Hands down the best banh mi I've had on the island! I usually go to Le Banh Mi for their crispy pork, but the pork banh mi here at Vietnamese Deli has outshined that--no sauce needed. First bite tastes homemade, and the pickled veggies are always perfectly consistent (something I find other places struggle with). I live in town but I'll happily drive down just for their banh mi. Their Thai tea is on the creamier side, and I love that they even have mini sriracha bottles. Definitely coming back and bringing my family here! read more

This place is really good, especially if you're looking for a clean, super healthy dish. I ended up getting the rolls, which were fresh and delicious. The sauce that came with them was a little too bland for my taste, but the sauce in the other bowl I tried was excellent. The space itself is small but very cute, and the food presentation was on point. Definitely recommend if you want something light and healthy. A new place in Kailua, I was looking forward to something fresh and delicious. Inside there is a counter and a small dining place with tree tables. The place has nice ambience and friendly service. Alas, the food is a bit of a disappointment. I ordered takeout Sauteed Noodles with chicken, Curry over Rice with chicken and a lemonade. The noodles were not sauteed, rather just boiled. They clung together into a single chunk by the time I got home since there wasn't any kind of sauce on them. The shredded chicken on top was quite tough and heard to eat, only sightly seasoned. Lots of noodles and too little chicken. The dish came with a cup of thin sauce which not enough to make up the dryness. Advise to the chef: reformulate the dish. The curry average with somewhat under cooked veggies. Ginger lemonade: way-way too sweet. Advise to the chef: reduce sugar, increase ginger. On the plus side the presentation was good and both dishes looked attractive. read more

I have had the food here many times, and it is really delicious. However, for those that need to keep a strict gluten free diet (I recently had to switch to a strict gluten free diet), I recommend/advise that you ask about the sauces used in the dish you plan to order (and sauces used on any add-on proteins) to ensure you feel comfortable about the sauces. Some Asian sauces are gluten-free, but some contain wheat that you might not expect. One of my favorite dishes, the vermicelli plate, is labeled gluten free on the menu. However, it comes with fish sauce, and although the sauce is delicious (having tried it before I had to eat gluten-free), I don't think the fish sauce is gluten free - the server I asked didn't know but showed me the brand they use (Three Crabs), and when I searched the brand online, some results indicated the "Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein" in the sauce may be derived from wheat. For non-gluten sensitive diners I would say this place is 4+ stars, but for celiac/gluten-intolerant diners, I would say 3+ stars as you will have to do a little extra research yourself to judge if you are comfortable with the sauces. read more
