Authentic Afghan food! So good! Brought my mom here for Mother's Day and she loved it. Would recommend!

I have been here twice, both times I was looking for dishes without meat or carbs. The first time I ordered the Lentil soup and the Shirazi salad. The Shirazi salad was excellent and the lentil soup was very good. The 2nd time I ordered the vegetarian kabob and the Matabhal (eggplant). The kabob was good and I ate it with the eggplant, it tasted good and filled me up. Both time I ate here it was a one man show, and I was the only customer. When I walked in, I thought this place looked familiar. It seems that I was here more than one year ago and took photos but neglected to write a review. I shall remedy that today. The salad that accompanied the meal was quite rustic - roughly cut cabbage, a few thin slices of tomato and cucumber and a big hunk of red onion. It was a perfect balance for the chicken and rice. Sublime‼ I was not expecting a half chicken - and oh what a chicken! The skin on this chicken was the crispiest I've ever had without it being fried. It was like chicken crackling! There was a white sauce - thick and yogurty in taste that also enhanced the chicken. Whatever they do to make the chicken skin as crispy as it it, changes the texture of the meat. It is soft as opposed to tender, if you can consider the distinction. It is very interesting but not in a bad way. It's as though the chicken was boiled until tender, drained and patted dry and then baked in very high heat after the skin was oiled. I don't know if that is the process but that the best way I can describe the end product. I have one very small complaint about the meal - it could have used a bit more salt all around. And yet, when I put the rice, chicken, and salad into one bite I did not miss the salt at all! I came in around 5:45 pm on a Saturday evening and left about 7:40 and no one came in to dine or pick up take out. The meal totaled $21.53. The portion was enough for three. The entree was$14.99! I hope that they are doing well but I think they could do better if they kept the prices but cut their portions. I would like to see them remain in business. The food is good and the atmosphere is pleasant and relaxing. There was a TV on the wall but it was not on. There was no "background" music and I found that very relaxing. I find that I am in this area quite frequently and I will remind myself to stop here more frequently. Please, do yourself a favor when in this area and stop by for lunch or dinner. Wanted to try something different and authentic Iranian / Persian cuisine is definitely something I don't see every day. I'm not sure how long they've been open, but I get the sense that they haven't been open very long. They weren't busy at all when I got there early in the evening - I was greeted politely and offered my choice of seating. My entree (Kobidah Lamb) turned out to be very familiar to me since it was similar to Greek and Mediterranean dishes I've had. The dish included a lot of rice... far more than I could possibly eat (I took some home). The lamb and rice were both very tasty... and on that note, I don't recall calling rice "tasty" in a review before, but this was some of the best rice I've ever had. Since the goal was trying something new (to me), I picked a couple appetizers that looked interesting - Sambosas and Arabic Bolani. In a way, these dishes have some similarities... Sambosas are essentially meat stuffed deep fried dumplings and I would loosely compare Arabic Bolani to a cheeseless meat filled quesadilla. Of the two, I preferred the Sambosas... the Bolani was pretty bland by itself, but served with accompaniments that optionally added some flavor. Get the bolani, just get it and you can eat it either slowly but surely or all at once! I do recommend though save some left overs for breakfast. We got to go so I cannot say much about the service but our order was out on time! We also got a chicken kebab and it was plenty of food already. read more

We stopped by here on a Tuesday afternoon. When we walked in, the restaurant was a little stuffy (but it was a hot day in June). It was clean. There was no one else there and we were told we could sit wherever we liked. We were offered water and our order was taken. We ordered the mango/yogurt drink, which was perfect for the heat. We ordered the hummus, which tasted a little different than what I expected (something was off with the spices and the consistency). The bread was really good for dipping the hummus. They also gave us a complimentary plate of salad and two dipping sauces. We ordered the chicken kabob plate and combination kabob plate. The plates came out after about 15 minutes. The spices for the kabobs were good, but the meat was a little too dry for me, but it could be that's how it is supposed to be prepared (I am comparing to the juicier kabob I get from Persian restaurants, and this restaurant is Afghan). read more

There are several Afghan options around this area but this one is the best! I have been here at least 4 times in the last two weeks to get their Chicken Karahi. The food is not only phenomenal but reasonably priced. To top it off the owner is super kind and greets me with a smile every time. Having grown up eating Afghan food, I was excited to find this restaurant and taste the cuisine. The restaurant was clean, the ambience authentic, and the service friendly. My girlfriend and I shared the Bolani, the Mantou, the Chicken, Steak, and Lamb Kobidah combo. I really enjoyed all of the dishes, each one made fresh to order (which does require more of a wait, but completely worth it), and even had some to take home for the next day. We also enjoyed complementary cups of hot Afghan tea on a cold night. I wish I lived in the area, because if I did, I would certainly return often! I've been wanting to try this place for the past weeks now and finally got around to it when I went on a late lunch break. This place is not far from work and I ordered the shawarma. On the menu, it doesn't indicate the kind of meat so I'm guessing you get to pick. I just chose the chicken and to my surprise it was very tasty. It has a curry flavor to it. For $9.99 it wasn't bad and wish it came with a side. There was no one there when I came and they made my food quickly was appreciated due to having to return to work. There was a lady there and we had a difficult time understanding ea other as I wanted to know how much more it would cost for a side of fries or salad. The option of sides are also not on the menu. So I think if they can print that on the menu or have it up somewhere that would be helpful. The place is a bit hard to find from the main road off of Manzanita as their sign is not on the brick/roof area. But if you get closer to the building you can see a sign on the glass window. They are located I think a door or 2 down from the Strings Italian restaurant. The restaurant was clean and bright, I might come back to eat in the restaurant one day and try other items. read more

Service is pretty good, but you'll want to expect English is a second language. what is afghan food? There's influence from Chinese, Indian, Mediterranean, and Persian. This is the small family owned restaurant. The owner's name is Abbas. He was very nice. I went to eat dinner there and after talking with him, and enjoying the food immensely, I decided to have a birthday party there for my cousin. They have the best bolani I've ever had in my life! It is thin and crispy. Every dish we ordered was fantastic, including the beef, chicken, rice and Vegetables. The dining room is not very big or have much ambience but the food is incredible. This place was awful from start to finish. First thing we see when we walk in? Some guy who looked like the owner wiping his nose with part of a tissue and then not even bothering to wash his hands. That set the tone right away -- gross and unhygienic. The vibe was honestly creepy. No music, dead silent, and only one other group of like 3 people in the whole place. The tables were covered in this dirty, grimy plastic film that made us not even want to touch anything. All the tables were long tables meant for family style eating that sat AT LEAST eight or more people. No tables for only two to four people. Then, instead of actually managing the restaurant, or just sitting in the back, the supposed "owner" sits down right across from us in the dining room and is on his laptop - super informal and discourteous. He was so close it felt like we were being watched the entire time. Totally uncomfortable, like we couldn't even talk to each other in private. Service? Terrible. They gave us ONE menu to share like we were in middle school, and when it came to the salads, instead of two small portions (one each), they just dropped off one tiny salad and expected us to split it, while the group behind us each had their own salad. The water situation was a joke too -- empty cups on the table but no actual water for 10-15 minutes. Let me make it clear that the cups weren't already there before we got there. It's like they forgot to bring out the water after they brought out the cups. The food was just as bad. The meat had zero flavor, and was sour, completely bland. I ordered the kebab with rice and ended up stopping at like a third of the way through. It was that bad -- plus my friend showed me some of the reviews while I was eating and they made me lose my appetite. Wish I'd listened to those reviews first. To top it all off, the staff weren't friendly in the slightest. The whole place was empty, and now I get why. And just a heads-up: the owner doesn't take criticism. If you leave a negative review, he'll reply with some nonsense about how he "researched" or "investigated" you and that your comments are fake or that they were made by his enemy or something. It's laughable and pathetic. Bottom line: dirty, uncomfortable, flavorless food, and the worst atmosphere I've ever experienced in a restaurant. It was a ghost town. Do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from this place. read more

Ambience was quiet as we were the only customers here for lunch at noon, they need your business! I ordered the combo kabob plate and my son the chicken curry. A Diet Coke and a water quenched or thirst. The dishes came out in about 15 minutes and the smells of the food cooking really piqued our hunger. The portions were huge and looked really tasty. The food here is phenomenal. The rice was fluffy and buttery, the meat was all tender and well-seasoned, and the soup was herbaceous and piping hot. While they didn't offer a drink menu, I asked if they could make doogh, which they did with no issue. I will definitely be going back. read more

This place is a great new addition to the Carmichael food scene. I've been here three times and the food has been delicious every single time. We've had the gyros and fries, the kobidah chicken, the kobidah lamb, the hummus, a couple different kinds of the bolani, the shirazi salad, and the mantou. We have loved everything and we generally order extra food just so we try more things and take leftovers home. Big portions at reasonable prices. It's not the easiest place to spot, located in the shopping center that houses Safeway, but it's worth finding. We ordered way too much food as always: the bolani, Qabali Palaw, combination kabob plate, lentil soup, chicken curry and mantoo. Everything was incredibly good! The bolani and Qabali Palaw in particular were amazing. Bolani is a kind of flatbread filled with mashed potatoes and scallions, and this is the best version we've ever had. The lamb shank was perfectly cooked and the rice so fluffy and flavorful. The lentil soup had a very nice blend of seasonings and was very enjoyable. The chicken curry was quite mild but the flavor was great. The only minor thing was that the lamb kabob could have been more tender but it was still quite tasty. The owners are lovely people and the service was very friendly, but the food did take a while to come out. However it was well worth the wait! Highly recommended! read more

Love this place! It just opened three months ago and the food is excellent. We have enjoyed the chicken kabob, bolani, borani (an eggplant dish) and the baklava. I am gluten free and the bolani is great because it is similar to a flat bread, but made of potato and green onion with a little salt and pepper, so it is gluten free! I just tried the borani badanjan for the first time today and it is excellent, made with eggplant, onion, black pepper, garlic, coriander, salt and tumeric. The restaurant is very conveniently located with an elegant interior ambiance that is rare to find around here. We will be coming back for take out and to dine in. read more

Had the best Afghan food from Abass. Amazing customer service! The ambiance is very quiet, peaceful!

This restaurant was a complete disaster. We walk in, and it's dead silent--no music, just creepy quiet with a group of four sitting together behind us. The owner, in plain street clothes, stares at us, wipes his nose with some tissue scrap, doesn't wash his hands, and walks off. He comes back, asks if we're Doordashers. We say no, and he just stands there like a statue, so we have to ask where to sit. He says anywhere, waving at the room. The tables--only huge ones for eight or more--were covered in grimy plastic film that hadn't been cleaned in forever. Then he sits at the table right next to us with his laptop, so close it felt like he was eavesdropping, making private talk impossible and us super uneasy. They give us one lousy menu to share, and it's a pathetic three pages, padded with duplicates to fake six pages--utterly bizarre. You're supposed to get complimentary salads while waiting, like breadsticks at Olive Garden, but they only bring one single-person salad for my friend, none for me. The group of four behind us each gets their own--felt like we were targeted. My chicken wrap was flavorless trash; I stopped halfway after reading Yelp review confirmed this place is a dump (they said their food was just microwaved precooked food, and that they were served very old meat). The owner can't handle criticism, dismissing bad Yelp and Google reviews as "false" and blaming them on "enemies," not real customers, without even investigating. Staff barely acknowledged us, tossing empty water cups on the table and leaving us waiting over 10 minutes for water in a near-empty spot with just that group. Do yourself a favor and avoid this sorry excuse for a restaurant. read more

This was our first time ordering food from this restaurant. I came in and ordered to go. Nice little place! They don't have the lighted restaurant sign up yet, so you have to look for it after dark. There we a couple of families having dinner and the smells made me so hungry while waiting. The food is delicious! Chicken was perfectly cooked. Bolani is excellent. We ordered a spinach dish (something Palak) that was delicious, and the chickpea side dish was also great. I can't wait to come back and have dinner in the restaurant next. Service was perfect.
