This is probably the easiest to miss restaurant to ever happen in Troy. In the winter anyways, there isn't even a sign out front. It's also in the basement down a flight of stairs. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. It's loud but not too loud. The customer service was fine and good. We got garlic bread which was more like a cheese pizza but delicious anyways , so I'm not sure that matters ! Pizzas were tasty, honestly very good. Pasta was ehhh. But their sauces were pretty good. Give this place a try because it's an affordable way to eat pretty good food. None of us got alcohol but for 6 people with entrees and appetizers the total was just $112. read more

Tried this for the first time last night. I'm impressed, and then I'm not. I'll still give 4 stars because the good was so damn good that it cancelled out the bad for the most part. First: The good. The created your own pasta option on this menu. Love the idea, and loved it even more when I got to eat it. I made a pasta with bowties, roasted garlic alfredo sauce. I added more garlic (Because I can), red onions, bacon, prosciutto, ham and mushrooms. This is how I would make it at home if I had all these ingredients in my fridge. It was extremely good and I ate the entire plate. Couldn't get enough. I also ordered the Bacchus garlic bread. This too was spot on. A bit of a departure as it was assembled more like a stromboli and then sliced into indiviual portions. But I'll tell you this: It works. Crispy to perfection. Just the right amount of garlic and cheese. I ate this entire thing also. Onto where you lost a star. I "Made my own" pizza. And i'll tell you, it was very very good. I had a 12" pie. Red onion, sausage, proscuitto, fresh mozz and mushrooms. Most of the pie was cooked to perfection. But the crust. Probably one of the things that people judge most about a pizza. It was completely burnt black. Bitter burn black. As much as I wanted to excuse this, for I know you use a wood fired oven, I can't on this review. When your trade mark is "Wood Fired", you need to adjust and control so this does not happen. Alas, I will be back. And you will likely earn the 5th star. Hands down BEST pizza spot in Troy. My wife and I came upon this restaurant while searching for a pizza spot in downtown Troy, NY. Their draft and mixed drink selections were great, and the food just blew us away. We always order the shrimp and spinach dip for an appetizer, and change up the pizzas)entrees each time we go. Went for our anniversary. Perfectly cooked, delicious crust. The 3 cheese pizza with feta was fantastic, even got my fiancee to start liking feta. As far as pizza in Troy goes, Bacchus is by far the best. Good, simple ingredients that are prepared well. My go-to for pizza in the area.

Pretty standard pizza. The crust was doughy and delicious but otherwise nothing too crazy. We started out with the spinach and cheese dip which was ok but the bread it was served with was great. Their wine pours are generous and they offer decent wine options. We ordered the margherita pizza which was pretty middle of the pack if you ask me. If you're looking for a relatively decent laid back pizza option this is the place. If you're looking for the best pizza you've ever had, keep looking. read more

This place has been raved about to me by many of my friends--I am conflicted with their accounts here's why. Wood fire oven pizza was a bit soggy and the garlic bread rendition (pizza crust) was very soggy. Flavor is where they nailed it!!! Both the garlic bread and the pizza we order was excellent. Stopped at Bacchus last Sunday night with a group of 5 other people. First time ever going and I'm definitely a fan. We sat in the bar and started out with some stellar drafts. They had a great selection, all reasonably priced. I can't remember what I had but it was a Delicious pale ale. We shared the roasted garlic, cheese bread and three different pizzas. All of them were outstanding. The pizza had a really thin crust, not quite what I'm used to but all were delicious. All together with a generous tip my share only came to $21, definitely a deal. read more

First time at Bacchus and I was very pleased. I'm not sure why they only have 3.5 stars. Went on a Thursday night and the place was packed. Only 2 servers but food came out fast and hot. The spinach shrimp artichoke dip was incredible, as was the dipping bread that came with it. We got a pepperoni pizza (pepperoni underneath the cheese!) that was also delicious. The pepperoni had a little kick to it that was yummy. They don't have ranch dressing, but you don't need it. I'll def be back. read more

I come here fairly regularly and would love to rate it higher but often the pizza is a bit cold because it is not brought out on time, or the drinks take forever, or something else is up. When they do get it right, the pizza is some of the best around. The pasta dishes are just ok. They have a great oven but sometimes the pizza is a bit dry. I do however recommend the place. It is cozy and in the summer you can sit outside, plus the location is great. The beer selection is very nice and you can spend a lot of time chatting with friends here without any pressure. I just wished they stepped up their service and pie consistency. In any case I will keep visiting. read more

I came here for a date night on a Saturday evening shortly after they had opened. This was the first time coming here in maybe 4 years or so, and I can now say I regret not coming back sooner. We were seated quickly by an amazing waitress who was very attentive, friendly, and efficient. Seriously had an amazing memory. We all got drinks in a timely manner, and she even was able to speak to the different beers on tap and was very knowledgeable. We started with the Shrimp Spinach Artichoke dip, which may very well be the best Spinach Artichoke Dip I've had from a restaurant, the shrimp was an added bonus. For an entree I built a pasta bowl, and my date got a custom made pizza. The portions are huge. Seriously, huge. And was spot on. My pasta was cooked perfectly, the sauce was great, and they certainly didn't skimp on the veggies, which I greatly appreciated! I did try the pizza, and it was cooked to perfection. Lots of toppings, and a perfectly flavored, crispy, thin crust. If I have one thing to say, we did come at what seemed to be a slower time. As the evening went on, and the place filled out a bit more, our service got a little bit slower. Not to say that it was bad! My family and I tried this restaurant based on a friend's recommendation. We were looking forward to having a tasty pizza, and pasta for my daughter. When we arrived, the restaurant had quite a few customers but did not look crowded. Our server came to our table not long after we sat down, and we were ready to order. It went downhill from there. It took the food 35 minutes to arrive even though the restaurant didn't look any more crowded. My daughter's pasta sauce was cold, not even lukewarm. The pasta itself was watery. My husband and I ordered a 12" pizza since the server recommended that size for 2 people. By the time we finished eating, it felt like we just had appetizers, not a meal. The ingredients tasted fresh, but there was no flavor. The only thing I liked about the pizza was the crust at the end of the slice. The whole meal was underwhelming. read more

The food was ok, but the whoever was working the oven needed to pay closer attention, our first pizza was seriously burnt and the second one had some pretty dark patches, this coming from someone who used to work the oven at a wood fired pizza place. We got the cheesy garlic bread, which was excellent. Otherwise the food was good, decent recipes, reasonable execution, though I don't think it's worth the price, the toppings were pretty skimpy. The replacement pizza only had cheese on like half the slices. The service however, was horrible. Maybe they were just understaffed, shit happens, but it took 15 minutes to get water, we struggled to get refills on water, when the burnt pizza came out the waitress kinda just put it on the table, said sorry there's a new one coming, and ran off. We never got plates for our pizza, and considering we waited a while for the first (burnt) pizza, waiting again for the second one was pretty shitty. My girlfriend didn't get a second beer because the server ran off after I ordered mine and didn't give her a chance to order. I have and my girlfriend does work in the food service industry, and we almost walked out. The cheese bread is ok. They have spinach and cheese dip is out of this world! So AMAZING! I created my own pasta dish with spinach, sausage, and prosciutto. So good. If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would. My girlfriend and I tried this place in summer of '09 and the pizza was not bad, albeit overpriced. The service, however was borderline hostile. I could understand the attitude if we walked in around close, but it was 6:30 PM. We had to flag the server/bartender over to our table for anything we needed, which was met with rolling of eyes and an audible sigh. After about a year we decided give the restaurant another shot. My girlfriend has frequently told me that I should never doubt her restaurant picks. I have to say, there's good reason behind her statement, and Bacchus is a prime example of it. I'd heard of Bacchus but had never tried it. In fact, several of my fellow Albany Yelpers have spoken very highly of it. Still, I never went there. After a few failed attempts at getting to Bacchus at a time when they were actually open, I finally made it and tried their pizza. It was phenomenal, as was the garlic bread. I also fell in love with a beer that they serve, called Session. Since then, I've been back a few times and it's consistently been a great experience. The atmosphere is pretty cool, the oven looks impressive, and the food they put together is excellent. Especially considering the price, it's really not an easy feat to beat Bacchus. A word of warning that is unrelated to the food: Regardless of the cell carrier that you have, reception will basically suck inside the restaurant. When I've had too much to drink in Troy, I stumble my way here with my friends and satisfy m my pizza cravings. You know if you've been in Troy there are plenty of places to get pizza, but a pizza forged from the pits of the underworld ( or a stove shaped from a giant Bacchus head ) is what I crave. Our experience was plain weird, from start to finish. Upon arriving, the waitress/hostess told us there were no available tables, but we could eat at the bar or she could take our name for a table. We said we would have a drink there but wait for a table. She walked away without taking our name. When we sat at the bar and saw her again, we reminded her we wanted a table and she didn't take our name down. She stared back at us as if she'd never seen us before. She eventually said that she would remember we wanted a table since we were "the only people waiting." Odd. The assumed manager/possible owner came over to us after having a brief and obvious conversation about us with the waitress/hostess and asked if we wanted a drink, without looking at us or greeting us properly. We ordered a beer and glass of wine. The beer overflowed alllll over the glass and the wine was stale. When seated, we weren't given place settings or silverware. We ordered the garlic bulb and were delivered room temperature bread and two garlic bulbs. We weren't told how to really eat it, so we had to ask. The waitress said, "I don't know. I guess just spread it?" Great. The pizza came and the waitress placed two old-looking, Pizza Hut-style plates down for us, and ignored the pizza stand on our table, instead -- placing the pizza right on the table and then walking away. When she finally came back, I asked for silverware. My boyfriend asked for a beer list (he had been ready for another beer but wasn't asked) and the waitress sighed and brought over a chalkboard to the wall next to our table. Odd. The pizza was thin, barely had ANY mushrooms or our other two toppings (at 65 cents per topping, the amount was disappointing). The crust was OK, I've had better -- but I expected much better from a wood fired pizza place. There was nothing special about this pizza. Overall, the service and the way we were treated was borderline hostile, awkward and incredibly uninviting. I would NEVER return and will NEVER recommend this place to anyone. I am surprised that some reviewers describe the atmosphere of Bacchus as classy or upscale. It is casual all the way! Love that they offer outdoor seating. Great beer selection...cold glasses- next I would like them to go even further and have frosted mugs! What could be better with pizza than almost FREEZING COLD beer? The pizza is delicious. Expensive- yes...I would not mind if they did not skimp on toppings. I think that there was way too little spinach on the pizza with meatballs, garlic, and spinach. 'LOVE those bubbles in the crust! Took a day trip to Troy; this was a decent dinner spot. Rugged aesthetic featuring the gaping mouth of Bacchus as the pizza oven. Unfortunately, the food was less exciting. I tried the garden pasta, which had lots of veggies prepared in a creamy red pepper sauce. I think my college dining hall makes pasta with more flavor - I had to add quite a bit of salt for it to taste okay. The cheesy garlic bread was soft and chewy, although the garlic flavor could have been more prominent. Some of my friends ordered the pizza, which looked good and crusty. Okay, so keep in mind that this review is based on the one visit at this restaurant. The location is okay. There are parking meters nearby so I can park and enjoy my meal. The inside of the restaurant is pretty unique compared to most of the pizza places I've been to. When I visited, it was during lunch hours. There wasn't a lot of people so it didn't take too long for our food to be ready. I didn't try the pizza mainly because I was told by my friends that it was really thin. I prefer to have pan crust pizzas. I ordered a pasta dish that was completely vegetarian. It was delicious! Lots of flavor and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. I really like the ambiance in this place. It would seem more appropriate for a Friday or Saturday night spot for beer and hanging out with friends. There are outdoor seating available, so that's very neat. Staff is friendly and the price range is very reasonable. Most people tend to overlook this little Italian restaurant because it's tucked away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Troy. I've made three trips to Bacchus, once for takeout the other times I dined in. I will agree with the other reviewers that it is a bit pricey. It seems that most of the pizza joints in Troy have their own schtick - DeFazio is cash only, I Love NY is for the "drunks". And Bacchus' is "pricey pizza in a classy environment". Which makes it a good choice for a date, a poor choice for anything else. Pizza at Bacchus is good, thin crust, fresh ingredients as good as the famed DeFazio. But the Bacchus pies are smaller and more expensive, on the other hand Bacchus doesn't have fluorescent lighting and takes credit cards. read more

My party of four was quite surprised that this place was as large and pleasant at it was. It's dark and quiet (in a good way - maybe because there wasn't a lot of people - even though it was Saturday night). A+ on ambiance, it felt like an old style pizzeria. Very Troy. Service was okay. Not overly accommodating. We liked the beer choices (about $5 a pint.) we ordered the mozzabella. Which was good, but not much to write home about IMO. It sorta bothered me that the cheese didn't cover the pizza and the price wasn't worth the size. Clearly the pizza is fresh and made to order. As was the salad and the roasted garlic bulbs. Speaking as someone not from the area, this restaurant was a hiddem gem. It's downstairs below groundfloor and the second I stepped inside, the aura of the place hit me. I was fascinated by the oven as it's the first thing anyone should see. The ambience of the restaurant had a relaxing feel to it due to the dark lighting. The smell of freshly baked pizza accompanied by the chefs enjoying their individually made masterpieces also added to the effect. Mozza Bella pizza: can't go wrong with it because a Kennedy created it, which was enough of a reason for me. Custom: pineapple, mushroom, ham, broccoli, and red sauce. It was a weird getup that tasted pretty healthy and pretty good. I would only recommend this if you like those ingredients. Custom: BACON, FIGS, AND GARLIC INFUSED OLIVE OIL SAUCE (the sauce was something along those lines). This genius combination tastes amazing with the bacon (one can never go wrong with bacon) and the figs that add a certain sweetness to the combo. I would highly recommend this custom combination to anyone, even if they dont like figs or bacon. Just try it! The pizza in general was overall really good. The pizza was thin so toppings did fall off. Drinks: The original sin cider was good, it tasted pretty similar to a fruit beer. The waitress offered their last keg of some kind of bock, which was very enjoyable. I loved this place last time I reviewed it, now I must update that review because I love it even more now. The pizza is still awesome! The beer is still great. The atmosphere is still the cozies in town. But the staff are even better. First of all, once again I must thank all the staff from the bottom of my heart for being up on the Americans with Disabilities Act and not hassling me over the fact that I'm assisted by a service dog. That means SO much to me. Last night was super busy, owing to Troy Night Out. I think I also heard that they were short a server. Nevertheless, everyone was sunny and friendly. Our pizza took longer than usual to arrive, owing to factors beyond anyone's control, which delayed us in getting to a show we were heading for, but that just gave us a chance to meet lots of interesting new people at the bar, and then, when the pizza did arrive, they gave it and another pint to us for FREE! :-D I love this place. read more

So I rated it three stars because it seems like a high class pizza place and that all around intimates me. But the pizza is absolutely incredible and for the price its in my top two for pizza in troy! I really appreciate that even though there are pre-thought out pizza options you can throw together a creation of your own which is always great and delicious. I also really liked the beer selection although I was kind of bummed when I went in the bar side of this restaurant that you can't be pitchers. call me low class (I mean we are in troy) but I love a good pitcher. Recommended to us by a local. Nice people and relaxed pace and we were in no hurry but if you have little patience you may complain the service was slow. Very reasonable prices for lunch. Past was overcooked and pepper cream sauce was forgettable and was skimpy on other ingredients that it came with. Pizzas had a huge crust handle and basically if there's no cheese and sauce on what you are eating, then you're eating crust not pizza. Yelp's 3-star "A-OK" rating sums it up nicely. Not bad. Mmmm..... Bacchus. I love their pizza, but you won't leave without your wallet feeling the hit. Pizza here is wood-fired and thin crust, which is my favourite kind, but it does mean you stuff in way more slices than a regular pan pizza. It's some of the best pizza I've had up here in the Capital District, and my friends and I have come up with interesting mix-n-match combinations for delicious gourmet varieties. Bacchus isn't cheap, and your margherita 12-cut pizza will cost about $12, and if you make your own, each additional topping is about $1.50 to $2.50 and before you know it, you could wind up with a $20 pizza! They have a delicious alfredo base to try as well as white pizza, pesto, and traditional red sauce. I was impressed by their simple garden salad ($2.50) which was fresh and well prepared. The atmosphere is cozy (I love the exposed brick), and it is wheel-chair friendly (entrance through the back). They are also open Sundays, and those of you based in Troy know how awesome *that* is. I still feel like DeFazio's wins out with sheer quality, but Bacchus is a lovely addition to downtown Troy and it does what it does well. read more
