Dave Portnoy gave DeFazio's pizza a score of 8.3 (out of 10), so I had to see if it's actually deserving of its high rating. Initially went to the original location in Troy, but was given an estimated wait time of 2.5 hours. Called this location to see if the wait time for take out would be just as long; it wasn't, but we still had to wait an hour. The menu at this location is not as extensive as the original. Their pizzas are also sold as 10" and 14" pies, rather than 12" & 16" pies at the original location. We ordered a 14" cheese pie, which totaled to ~$15. There's a 4% discount if you pay in cash! The pizza shop appears to just be a small take-out spot, but you can take your pizza next door to the brewery and dine in the outdoor patio. The patio space is quite the vibe -- a great space for a casual hangout. As we picked up the pizza slice, we noticed the undercarriage was a little weak. Maybe it needed to be in the oven a little longer. The ingredients, on the other hand, were very fresh and well-seasoned; even the cheese had a distinctively fresh taste. The flavors of the pizza alone were able to carry it. Crust was pleasantly airy and had nice chew to it, but I would've enjoyed it more if it was a smidge toastier. Don't think I can agreeably rate this spot an 8.3, but I give it a solid 7. A good pizza overall, but not my top pick. read more

I'm a fan of DeFazio's in Troy. I had yet to try the Albany location on Livingston Ave. The menu isn't as extensive but what they offer is delish. The pizza shop is not fancy but the staff is friendly, helpful and down-to-earth. So far, I've had the Fra Diavolo and the Buffalo Chicken. If you place your order for pizza first, then go next door to Albany Distilling for drinks, the staff from DeFazio's will deliver your pizza to your seat. It's a nice business model and the two staffs seem to collaborate well. It made for really fun evening of casual dining. A large group of young women seated at the next table were also having drinks and pizzas. It may have been a birthday party. At any rate they seemed to have plenty to celebrate. What!!!! Can't believe it took me so long to get the Albany location! I used to get a vegan pie every Thursday for lunch at the Farmer's Market in front of SUNY Research Foundation back in 2017 and 2018. I loveddddd their pizza! I have not been to their original location yet but I've been to the Pizza Garden location at Indian Ladders Farm. I love that they're doing so well! Great family! Absolutely amazing pizza!!! Forever grateful for the inclusion of vegan items so people like me can still enjoy their favorite food, a fresh hot wood flamed pie that does not sacrifice on taste because it's plant based! DeFazio's x Albany Distilling Co. is a match made in heaven -- what's better than enjoying a great pizza with a great cocktail on a cool patio?! This pizza is *chef's kiss* -- wood fired, thin and crispy, and the DeFazio's pizza sauce is hard to beat. Plenty of vegetarian/vegan pizza options is always greatly appreciated. I love having it as an option for takeout in the neighborhood as well for the times I want to enjoy it at home. Only taking off a star because sometimes they do get really backed up and the wait times for a pizza can be well over an hour; plan accordingly if you're grabbing a pizza before a show at Albany REP, trying to speed eat a whole pizza is not the most fun. read more

Defazios in Albany is directly attached to Albany Distilling Company and make a great pair for dinner and a drink. We ordered take out, sorry no seating in Defazio's. The online ordering system is easy to use and shows you how long to expect to wait for your pizza. Defazios uses a bread down rather than a traditional pizza dough. I'm a big fan of the wood fired brick oven taste of the old family recipe crust. We ordered a vegan Florentine pizza. The pepperoni was savory and the cheese was melty. I definitely recommend ordering take out, delivery, or grabbing a pie to enjoy at the distillery next door. read more

I am not a local like a few of my friends who were unaware of this pizza parlor. The 10" size was ideal for a single person, and the 14" size was ideal for families or big parties. We had to settle for 10" pizzas because this location ran out of dough to make the 14", but the pizza was delicious. This hidden pizza jem is Albany's best. Try the fresh or regular mozzarella with any of the toppings.They offer seats adjacent to the bar, and if the weather is good plan to sit outside. Its a small place and they usually do pickup orders. But if you are at Albany Distilling Company they bring the order to you table. The service was quick and we tried their fresh mozzarella pizza and it was really delicious and fresh. Definitely one of the best pizzas i have had in a while. read more

Pizza and cocktails - what more could you want?! We have tried several of their pizzas, but have tended to stick to what we know we can't live without - the eggplant pizza and the arugula and prosciutto pizza. Chefs kiss! They have some salads and apps that are also a great addition to the meal, but the pizza is the hit here. If you're looking for dessert - Their hangover cake is delightful. The service is always great - they take your order in the shop and will deliver it to your table at Albany Distilling. Depending on when you go, the time may vary widely in terms of how long it takes for food. They get very busy on Friday and Saturday nights! read more

Since DeFazio's opened up the Albany location , it's been my go to place for pizza. It's so good it's ruined practically all the rest of the pizza joints around for me. Pizza menu is small, just a half dozen or so options of personal sized pizza. Kitchen turns out meals for the distillery guests next doorp too so maybe you can order more than just pizza, but the pizzas are made in a wood fire oven, the dough is delicious and the pizza is just Albany's best by far. Everyone prefers a different pizza so ymmv but if you really like good pizza, you owe it to yourself to check this place out. I love grabbing a drink next door at the distillery and sitting out back under the sky to enjoy this amazing pizza! We always order one of their great salads - if we take out my kids insist in getting extra dressing- it's oil and vinegar but somehow it's a strong above... just like all the things they make. You really can't go wrong. And if you are dairy free - this is the jackpot! My kid can't eat dairy and she loves loves loves the vegan pizza - just spot on! My dad always asks to get pizza here or in Troy when he visits from out of town... and that's serious in my book. The sauce is just right, sweet but not too sweet, great tomato flavor. The dough -oh the dough... so good. Just thick enough that it doesn't fall apart. And crust along the edge a bit thicker .... With those bubbles sometime that I love... and the first bite just wants to fall into your mouth. And the cheese.... Whether it's fresh mozzarella, mozzarella, smoked mozzarella or the vegan cheese is just the right amount - not overwhelming and balanced against the sauce and dough. DOGS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED IN RESTAURANTS OR any establishment where food is being prepared!!!!!! I Love dogs too!! However, I don't want Dog hair on my pizza OR on my pizza box!! Found this place because it was #2 on the Times Union 2021 best of list, then saw comments that it was highly ranked by Portnoy. I am really glad I found it. Not only are the pizzas amazing (using bread dough for a chewier crust, a feature you will love) but the Greek salad was a huge hit. Prices are great for the quality of the pies you're getting. One commenter complained that the cheese was too salty but I liked it (it's on the salty side but not overly so). read more

I will never go back, which is a shame because I really would have liked to have at least TRIED the pizza. Back in Jan. I visited for the first time and the woman at the counter yelled at me the entire time I was there. I sat on the edge of a seat in a booth just to rest (my sugar level was low) and look over the menu and she screamed at me that the booth was reserved. I'm not exaggerating, everyone turned and stared at me. There was no indication whatsoever that the table was reserved so how was I supposed to know? She pointed at a corner where a small, questionable table stood and said, "you can sit there." I refused the ratty-looking accommodation. My friend went up to get a menu and she made a point of looking over him and help another customer in line. At that point I walked out. I'm a grown-ass woman, talk to me like you have some sense and respect. I give one star because the pizza may have been great but I'll never know. read more
