My family frequently eat at Bacio, we've had many great experiences here and have even gotten to know the owner from his original location in Mount Airy. You can expect to find a variety of flavorful dishes, such as pasta dishes (the sweet potato gnocchi is masterful) with rich sauces, fresh seafood (I once had a fantastic chippino there), hearty meat dishes, and desserts like riccota cake that remind me of how my family cooks and the recipes my grandmother made. Bacio is an excellent place for the not so usual pasta and other Italian dishes. We've had the sweet potato gnocchi many times and it never fails. The appetizers are to die for. From the antipasto to various kinds of seafood dishes, we are always delighted. Many times we enjoy the apps so much that we wind up too full for the rest of the dinner. Made a reservation a month in advance for a special birthday celebration. Upon arrival, they acted as if we didn't even have a reservation and sat us in the entrance way where they had added one random table. The room was cold, the heater fireplace wouldn't stay on, and we had to ask multiple times just to have any basic service such as placing an order. Sometimes it may take a while for your food but that's only because it's a real neighborhood spot... young students and family helping out. Bacio still has it. You really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu, and there are also several daily specials. Owner/chef Jay Saponaro, who used to have Bacio in West Mt. Airy, is a class act. Professional in every way. The grilled Romaine salad and mushroom pappardelle were wonderful, as was everything else. The prices are ridiculously reasonable, considering the quality and portion sizes, and it is BYOB, so you save money there also! And Jay will make vegan dishes, even if they are not on the menu. And a free parking lot in the rear. Our server, Lucia, was absolutely delightful, efficient and with lots of personality. We thoroughly enjoyed her. Highly recommended! read more

WOW!!!! My 2 daughters, son and I visited Bacio for the 1st time last night. It was only because we couldn't get reservations anywhere else for 5 at the time we wanted. I "settled" for Bacio, having only 3.5 stars for reviews. I love Italian food. I've been to the most highly rated and revered Italian restaurants. This place is hands down the best I've ever had!! I'd rate it 15 stars if I could and just baffled at their overall rating. Starting off, the complimentary tomato salad that had basil, olive oil and some spices in it was absolute pure magic and one of the greatest things I've ever eaten. Did a wizard make it? All of the rest of our food was the same, truly, simply incredible. My meat lasagna was without a doubt the best lasagna I've ever had in my life. I was stupefied at how it was that amazing! How?? My kids who can be picky loved their food. Our server James was awesome and kind and very attentive. The rest of the staff was so friendly. LOVE this place! My parents and I were in the area last year and decided to look for an Italian restaurant. Bacio had high ratings so we decided to go and ended up loving our meal. We were back in the area again this year and wanted to eat there again. We realized that the old location closed (Mt. Airy) and there was a new location on Bethlehem Pike. My only complaint is that the restaurant needs to figure out a way to correct the location. When we put in the address, the GPS took us about a mile past the restaurant and we ended up having to call the restaurant and ask for directions. The best part--DINNER! Dinner was fantastic. We loved the fact that its BYOB. For dinner, we split two appetizers and a couple of pasta dishes. The calamari was so fresh and not overly fried or breaded and the sweet potato gnocchi had so much flavor with the cream sauce on top. Our entrees included Veal Ravioli, Crab & Linguine w/ a Diavlo sauce, and Pappardelle w/ Mushrooms and a cream sauce. We had a wonderful night and we can't wait to visit agian next year! read more

'Tis the season for re-examining some of the places I have been avoiding and giving them another chance. I went to Bacio when they first opened on Mt. Pleasant in W. Mt Airy. This allegedly Italian restaurant served me a plate of spaghetti which was all stuck together. The flavors were OK, but no reason to go back. This time I went with a social group of @ 12 people. We had a reservation. There was one server for the whole restaurant. They kindly sent us some small appetizers, which turned out to be the best thing of the evening. Eventually we got our food. I had ordered Scampi which the waiter offered to put over pasta. What I got was a gloppy brown sauce which had little of the olive oil and garlic I was expecting. Few people had positive things to say about their food and few finished what they ordered. Yes, the portions were generous... I see no reason to return to Bacio. I think they could benefit from downloading some NYTimes recipes. read more

We've been Bacio groupies since shortly after Jay opened his restaurant in Mount Airy. We enjoyed the ambience of the tiny dining room with the kitchen along one side. The food was enjoyable. It was like family, fellow patrons, servers, staff, owner, and Manny the greeter-in-chief! Jay moved the whole show to Erdenheim and lost only the kitchen-in-dining-room, and Manny. This is one of my all time favorite restaurants and has been for quite some time since before they moved to this location. The food is amazing. The chef is an artist. The service attentive. The atmosphere charming. My boyfriend and I come here on a regular basis and the staff treat us splendidly. They have a decent sized menu but also offer good specials. I tend to prefer the pasta dishes while my boyfriend goes for the fish though last night he had an incredible breaded veal that I will want to have the next time we come. My favorites are the calamari, the mussels in spicy red sauce, and mushroom pappardelle. The pasta is always cooked just right and the seasoning so skillful that it surpasses other Italian restaurants. This is my happy place. read more

Someone in charge (Owner? Chef? Manager?) came to the table next to us three times, in some sort of an escalating disagreement with another patron. Completely unprofessional. No excuse. Very nice ambiance and great music provided great hopes for this special occasion. We arrived early to secure the last reservation for the evening. We were seated in the back room while staff prepared for the evening. We got the feeling our presence itself was unwanted. We were tended to between other tasks. Food was ok. Bruschetta was the stand out. Wine was lousy - bring your own. A very nice women came towards the end of the meal with a great service attitude - she brightened up desert. She reminded the staff my meal came with pasta, however it never came At bill time, the waiter oddly requested cash though credit was OK. Very odd place. I'm surprised by all the high reviews. The restaurant claims to have house made pasta and is an "Italian Cucina" however falls short on everything. The menu has items that do not exist in Italian cuisine as well as clear mistakes that even google translate would pick up on. The Bruschetta was horrible. I do not understand why it is over complicated with cheese, peppers and whatever else they throw on there. As an Italian I didn't expect much, but somehow they lowered the bar. Bruschetta is so simple to make. The trout I had a was edible, but was not properly de-boned. My girlfriend ordered the linguine with muscles, and they came with greens and peppers (it was horrible). It seems the chef or owner has no clue what Italian food is. The only difference between this place and Olive Garden are the prices. Every plate is over complicated with flavors and textures that don't match. I would not recommend Bacio anyone. I suggest the owner take a time to study a proper Italian menu (they're not very complicated or hard to make). I would have given this two stars because the staff seemed friendly, however, the owner got into a fight (yelling match) with a patron in the middle of the dinner service. This is extremely unprofessional and made everyone in the restaurant uncomfortable. He didn't even apologize. I hope Had to update just because of the way the owner is responding to bad reviews - as a business owner I suggest he takes the negative feedback to improve his offerings. read more

Called before coming last night to see if I needed a reservation which I was told to just come right in. My wife and I get there and were asked if we had a reservation and stated that we were just told to come in. The waiter rolled his eyes and said "of course the owner would say that." I went to Bacio for my birthday 9/22 and I was so excited based on the reviews, however, I left very disappointed! My talapia was terrible, it tasted like can fish, was cold and salty. Calamari horrible and the worst part of the evening was seeing staff walking through in very dirty clothes, a dog roaming around in the restaurant and the owner going to tables looking very disheveled and not presentable at all. Should have gone to Jansen's or Moma, big mistake. Will definitely not return! The dessert stand is wide open in the front and uncovered, not elegant, very disappointed! read more

My very FAV Italian restaurant...anywhere!...used to be in my neighborhood in Mt. Airy and always busy. The owner and chef, Jay, is a doll and learned his culinary trade from his Italian grandmother, whose black & white photo dons the menu. His dishes are authentic and he's always creating FABULOUS new ones...he spends every afternoon getting his fresh groceries for that evenings creations, and incredible Italian bread at the Italian Market in South Philly. I love his Mushroom Pappardelle appetizer so much and hounded him to make it a main dish...and he finally did! My FAV is his EGG PLANT PARMISIAN...no one makes it better, and in Philly, that is saying ALOT! He creates little 'tastes' that he brings to your table to try before the meal, gratis. His SEA FOOD dishes are so creative and DELISH! When I lost my partner, he showed up at her Celebration of Life with a massive tray of his (better than anywhere in the world) Tira Misu...it was her favorite and mine. He has since moved to Erdenheim, a bigger place, cool older building. I moved to the Bay Area, California 5 years ago and when I come 'home' I go to BACIO with friends to get my fix...Eggplant Parm and Tira Misu and a big, warm hug from the sweetest guy ever, Jay... And I have not been able to find anyone who knows how to make Eggplant parm out here! Bacio is great. The prices are super affordable for their large portions. My finance is Italian and loves the food...I'm 100% not Italian and still love it lol. We usually get the calamari and chicken parm so delicious! Honestly some of the best chicken Parm I've ever had. I usually done get the pasta on the side and it's plenty of food! We also tend to fill up on the bread which is so good. We love that's it's a BYO, and it's even better the new location has a license! Definitely give this place a chance. We also are huge fans of supporting small local establishments. And take note that the majority of the 1 star reviews here come from folks who have never reviewed any other company on Yelp- it's basically one large party that teamed up and all gave bad reviews. read more

Hands down, one of the best Italian restaurants I've been to in quite a while. The Portuguese Scallops is THE best meal I've eaten in a restaurant in years. Every Italian restaurant has a pasta and mixed seafood dish. Most are fairly generic. Bacio's "The Whole Ocean" is outstanding. The marinara sauce is outstanding, as are the raviolis. I generally only review places I really like. Bacio is one of those places. My first time there and I was very impressed. I started with the scungilli salad. It was nicely dressed and tasty. Fresh greens with tangy vinaigrette and lemon dressing. The scungilli was tender and thinly sliced. Next course was linguini with mussels. Ample portion of mussels in a delicious tomato gravy. Lots of garlic and enough linguini to fill me up. The service was friendly and while they seemed inexperienced, they were personable and glad to help if you reached out. Overall I rate eating establishments on the quality of the food and ambiance. A homey friendly feel at Bacio for sure. I will certainly be back. Grazie! read more

Bad experience ! I have been coming here for over a year and this is my first bad experience. I usually order the whole ocean on red sauce which is always very tasty. Tonight i decided to try the sweet potato gnocchi . I arrived at 7:15pm. Sat at the bar to place my to go order. Very busy but the bartender took my order quickly . I was told it would be 30minutes. Fast forward . 45 minutes later and no food . I was told it was almost ready . Fast forward another 15 minutes and still no food . Never have i had to wait an hour for food here ! I asked one server for an update ( an older gentleman with shoulder length gray hair and glasses ) and he basically flagged Me and said in a nonchalant manor " its coming , who's next " lFood finally came out after threatening to leave at 8:30. 70 minutes for one entree ?? No bread was offered or provided like it usually is . Once i opened the food it most certainly did not look the sweet potato gnocchi that others have posted here. The food was cold . The red sauce was good but the rest was not . I am very disappointed tonight . I didn't even eat the food as it was not good at all . Almost $20 for cold food . Unbelievable . I am in shock because as many times as i have been here this is my first disappointing experience . I wish the owners were here as this probably would not have happened..... read more

When Bacio first moved to this location my friends and I became regulars. It was always packed, and the food prepared by the Haitian chef was creative and well prepared. Then the chef left and the food creativity went with him. Whereas pasta lovers may have been happy with the owner's amazing tomato sauce, we got bored with the same menu week after week. Then Covid came and I did order take-out a couple of times for my pasta loving daughter but there was not much for a non-pasta eaters to eat so we sought out other BYOB restaurants that offered more variety. Well last Thursday 5 of us decided to give Bacio another try. We made reservations for 7:00 but they were definitely not needed. There was one 4-top occupied and then us. The menu had just one seafood item and was again pasta heavy. I ordered the chicken parm without pasta and asked for a veggie, as did one of my dinner companions. The other three ordered eggplant parm, shrimp scampi and an appetizer of rolatini. And then we waited. And waited. The waiter brought out new bread twice as we waited. Finally after 65 minutes, at 8:05, our dinners arrived. The food was okay but the tomato sauce still fantastic. Years ago the owner would come around and talk to the customers but this night he just stayed in the kitchen with the door closed. At 9:00 it was made clear by the waiter's impatience that it was time for us to leave. We left him a generous tip..it wasn't his fault that the food was inexcusably delayed...and left. On the way home my friend and I wondered whether we had somehow offended Jay, the owner, as he always had come out and talked to us in the past. I have a rather unusual last name so he certainly knew we were there. We'll never know if we were snubbed because none of us care to return to find out. So sad to see a once fine restaurant slowly die. read more

I had been to the old Bacio several times over the course of the past eight years or so. It was one of my favorite restaurants because of the neighborhood vibe, good affordable food and BYOB. I was ecstatic to learn they were moving into my neighborhood. The new location got off to a real rocky start food and service wise but living around the corner I continued going back. I'll say that for the past year the food has been consistently solid and reminiscent of their old location-- even though the vibe can't be matched. I know the interactions with the owner have also turned some people away and while I haven't experienced this myself, I don't blame them. Reading the discussions on yelp alone are cringeworthy and hopefully the owner has learned a few lessons on that front. However I strongly suggest that if you were disappointed in the first five months of operation at Bacio, you return to give them another shot. They had a lot of kinks to work out but I think they've made some really good adjustments (including rearranging their front bar). Food wise the chicken parm and the whole ocean are my fav dishes at affordable prices for the amount you get. I'd advise to stay away from the specials as on multiple occasions I found them to be overpriced for the amount of food. I hope that Bacio continues to find its groove and place in their new neighborhood. I would definitely love for it to return as being a restaurant where locals go for a good meal on an ordinary night versus a spot where people expect an elaborate night out (which is I think what has affected expectations versus reality to date). Bacio is best experienced casually with good food and good company alongside a bottle of wine or two. read more
