This place was a rare find it's quaint and funky has indoor and outdoor seating. Food was amazing huge well-prepared delicious and the price was very inexpensive. the service was also good they had a very decent craft beer selection as well as wine. I've never once had a less than amazing experience at back 40, tonight we started with black bean hummus, We had the veggy tacos with red peppers and avocado on happy hour for $3 a piece! nachos veggy style, and a jerk chicken taco special, also happy hour. We went at about 7 it's a hole in the wall and it's very small you have to park in a sandy, dirt area which I don't mind. There are seats inside and out but not many in general. We sat outside since we had a large party of 10 people including a 2 year old 4 year old and a baby. They had to put tables together for us. The outside setting is comfortable and relaxing and it is dog friendly. The menu sounded delicious I wanted to try almost everything. I'm not sure if it was because of my large party but just to get our drinks we had to wait for more than 15 minutes and it's hard to entertain a couple of kids when they are antsy. We finally got our drinks and this is a suggestion it the water should be changed because it tasted like dish water just not very good and it didn't taste very clean. We waited probably a half and hour more before we got our food and the waitress didn't seem to care and she did not return later to check if we needed anything or refills she only came when she brought the check. Me and my sister both shared the wet burrito since it was that big we got it with steak inside. It was very delicious I would definitely order it again. What I would of liked although is that it would come with a side, maybe a side of chips and salsa or rice and beans something to that effect to eat with burrito. My father said that his food was okay and my brother in law got the soup of the day which was lobster something he said it was not seasoned enough and there was not a lot of lobster in it. My sister thought her tacos were okay they were normal and my mother thought her chicken tacos were disgusting unfortunately. She said it wasn't seasoned well and it was very rubbery. Overall this place was ok I'm not sure if I would go again I had high expectations seeing the reviews and compliments of this place so I was a little let down. First off, it took us a drive around to realize there was parking in the back. Once we parked, we were immediately greeted and seated. Hillary was our server and she was efficient and helpful. I wasn't overly hungry and ordered the Thai Chicken salad. Huge salad with very tasty dressing. The menu had a lot of things I would have ordered had I been more hungry. A nice assortment of choices. I forgot what my friend had but she was also very pleased with her choice. I have already suggested this place to a few friends. Definitely a hidden gem as it is off the beaten path. Very cute place to enjoy some food and friends. Dog friendly! The staff was attentive and even filled up a dog bowl they had with water for my pup. The chili mac bowl (vegetarian) was delicious and very filling. I just wish it would have included some sort of bread though. read more

Now when you read the name of this place they were really correct in saying it's the back 40. My GPS had a hard time finding it but. I wanted it and hung ion there and found it. A really small house in the the middle of other houses and a couple of businesses. Like everything in St. Aug you have to look behind everything. In this case that's where the parking is. I walked in the place not knowing what to expect. So I came in to the living room and walked into the dining room and thru where the kitchen would normally be. Then I turned and saw a walk-in closet which is now the bar area. not much drinking at this bar cause it also doubles as the server/hostess station. Ok the place was a full house so they marched me pass the now kitchen which used to be a couple of bedrooms that the walls went out in the trash one day. Outside to the back patio. Now this place opened up like a flower. A huge parking lot at least huge on St. Augustine's standards. So I grabbed one of the 5-6 picnic tables and I was given my drink. I looked over the menu and went with a diet pleasing quesadilla with shrimp. The fat kid inside of me was screaming really loud for the wet burrito thou. Fight the urge I stayed with the quesadilla when my server returned. The soon to me a lot smaller guy won out this time. When my food arrived it looked like you normal quesadilla and for the most part it was. There was a good amount of chopped up shrimp after all parts is still pieces. There was also some nicely grilled red peppers and onions mixed in with a lack luster showing of cheese. In all a good joint in the woods with a driveway. Just had a wonderful family dinner at the Back 40! We found this place through Yelp, and we were not lead astray. This cute urban cafe is off the beaten path, but well worth the mini adventure to find it. A short drive from the main tourist area, it is located in an area you could mistake for quiet neighborhood. This restaurant is located in a house and maintains the charm of eating in someone's house. The staff was very friendly, the food was amazing. Lots of great flavor and good sized portions. We tried calling several times before we drove in and when the phone is answered...it's a recording with background noise of a busy restaurant. The message says leave a message we will call you back. You know what makes this place great. You order a high alcohol.content beer and they bring you the whole beer. Not some brandy glass with a dallop of beer in it. I ordered a high gravity beer knowing full well that I was paying too much for it (the place is great not heaven) and they brought me a whole bottle of beer. I was blown away. The food was excellent and all priced around $10. I had the jerk of chicken bowl with avacodo and instead some tiny avacodo slice you get half a damn avacado. Half a damn avacado people! When in St. Augustine I always have this place on the proverbial bucket list. I get the same thing every time so unfortunately you wont get an immersive review of their entire catalog. The fish tacos, however, you can rest assured are phenomenal. A little Cholula or Sriracha hot sauce, a cold beer and a napkin to wipe your brow is all you need. Before you see this 3 star review and think I'm crazy, I just need to say I'm a taco snob. We went during happy hour and $3 taco time. I ordered the avocado red pepper taco and mahi taco. There was a runny creamy sauce on top of the taco which caused a lake of liquid to form on my plate (my greatest taco pet peeve!). I could not taste the ticket items of the taco, only the sauce that did not taste great. We had excellent service. The gals waiting on us were chipper and kind. I look forward to giving Back 40 Urban another chance, but I will be choosing something else on their vast menu. Words of wisdom: If you aren't a fan of creamy white sauce, ask for it on the side. They do have a delicious red salsa which is yummy. Ask for that salsa and use some of the spicy St. Augustine hot sauce too. If I've talked you out of tacos, get the jerk chicken nachos as an entrée! I LOVE the atmosphere, it's an old house with lots of character and quiet. The food is fresh and flavorful. We had the wet burrito, steak tacos and the jerk chicken quesadilla. All 3 of them had great taste and accompanied with good dipping sauces. Rating: Food/Beverage Quality: (8) The food was very good and tasty, it had the right amount of flavor that would mix well any dipping sauce or the hot sauces on the side. The lemonade had a regular taste, which didn't taste very homemade and natural, but it was still good. Food/Beverage Quantity: (9) The amount of food was very reasonable and filling. Some are offered with sides and some are not but they all keep a balanced quantity. Value of the dollar: (7) It is not the cheapest place but for the amount of food that is in one serving, it is definitely worth it. Super cute hidden gem in St.Augustine. This place is away from all of the touristy restaurants with overpriced bad food! This restaurant is a charming historic house turned restaurant with 3 dining rooms for patrons to sit in. The waitresses are super friendly, attentive and offered great suggestions for their favorite items on menu. We came in during happy hour so it was hello $2 -$3 tacos! We ordered the black bean nachos and shrimp quesadillas for an appetizer, which were both absolutely delicious! I ordered the Mahi Mahi (highly recommended!), shrimp and jerk chicken tacos and it was pretty good. Not the best Mexican food ever but it was well seasoned and the presentation of each plate was clean and pretty. Back 40 Urban is a great spot for eating after being at the beach all day! read more

Met friends here last night ( who had never been )and we all loved our selections. I had the chili Mac with a side salad and everything was fresh and delicious. The shrimp tacos were enjoyed by their son and his dad wolfed down the huge wet burrito. The beer drinkers of the group heartily enjoyed the wide range of beers available and their house Malbec is delicious. This was not my first time here but it was the first time I ordered dessert. OMG the Apple pie cheesecake was out of this world. I sent it around the table and the plate came back clean. If you're looking for something fancy, keep driving. Really really delicious, and cheap! We got the jerk chicken quesadillas with pineapple and the shrimp with polenta/grits cake special. So yummy ! Some other people were scarfing up this soup with hominy in it that I wanted to try, maybe next time. Yeah, its in kind of an old house that has been remodeled and we sat by a window that had peeling paint, but Ive eaten at worse places :). Not only are the portion sizes enough but for the price I think they offer some of the best value in town. I ordered the wet burrito, and a bowl on my previous 2 visits and have been very happy with the taste, price, and service. I really like the setting of the building being in an older home and think it is a warm and nice setting. I enjoy making lunch the largest meal of the day and the dishes are enough to fill me up for the rest of the day. To me some of there dishes feel lower sodium to me than other comparable dishes at other local restraunts and this is a big positive ! Overall for the dishes offered the restraunt could not be better and they even have a punch card to get free lunches after I believe 7 visits so that's another big plus. read more

Don't be deceived by the looks. It looks like an old run down residential home, which is pretty much what it is. But the food is creative, fresh and tasty. Parking can be troublesome at lunch time, but it's bigger than it looks inside and there is usually always a table open. read more
