The menu is a little overwhelming with many choices to contemplate. I came here YEARS ago, and really thought that it was gone. But when a friend suggested to go for lunch, I didn't hesitate! I went back and forth with what I wanted, and ended up ordering the Island Bowl. WOW....when this was brought out to me, I was in AWE! My bowl was filled to the brim with: black beans and brown rice, shredded cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, pickled jalapenos, cilantro, green onions, and salsa. I added chimichurri steak tips as my protein, and I couldn't have been happier! Potion sizes are large, I was watching all the food pass by. Prices are reasonable, and choices are plenty! I am spending 3 weeks in St.Augustine and have been to Urban Back 40 twice already and am going the third time this weekend and a fourth next week. I'm from the Florida Keys so I am Uber picky about Key Lime pie. Well, they have the best Key Lime pie I've ever had. There was seven of us and the place looked good with mixed reviews so we gave it a try. Service was terrible with one girl trying to wait on four parties and was clueless on how to do her job. The appetizers came out cold and were sent back. We had to ask for everything, napkins, water and utensils. After waiting for nearly an hour our food came and was 50/50. There was a lobster taco which was very good and quesadilla which was also very good but the pineapple salsa was just untasty chopped pineapples out of a can. The rest of the meals were not tasty and was accompanied with terrible tasting sides. The manager who came to our table and was understanding and did give us some compensation on our dishes. Every once in a while I decide to leave the brown bag at home and treat myself to lunch. I have been to the Back 40 several times. I normally get the Curry Shrimp salad which I love, but today I decided to branch out and try their Jerk Chicken and Pineapple Quesadilla. I was definitely surprised and may have found my new favorite. It was a very big portion, flavorful and just everything I wanted. Their homemade salsa is bomb! The layout of the restaurant is restaurant is interesting. It appears to be a converted house. It's decor is very charming. You do have to go all the way back by the kitchen to the little bar area to pick up to-go orders so you do get a little tour of the place. My only criticism is the service. Now I have never dined in so don't hold this comment with a lot of weight (at least until I actually have dined in). The staff member is (usually) very friendly when I call in my order, but the staff (and rightfully so I guess given the lunch rush) is usually very short and wear the stress of the day on their faces. My food is usually handed to me on the fly saying "There you go". I am hoping that with the dine in service the experience is different. I do understand being busy, overwhelmed and stressed out so I'm not really holding it against them that much. I have driven by this place for months and finally decided to check it out. It's a house that's been converted into a restaurant. There is a private parking lot on both sides of the building. The porch had A board listing the specials of the day before you walked in. Inside the first room there were four booths. Further down the hall in the next room were a few tables and at the back of the house were more tables and the kitchen and restrooms. The four of us grabbed a booth in the first room. Our waitress was very friendly and gave us the menus. There was quite a good selection of food choices but we all decided to go for tacos. Since that's what the menu said they were known for. This place also serves alcohol. The fish tacos were delicious. The fish was grilled and dressed with a nice coleslaw and sauce. You only got two tacos. There was a choice of several sides. We got the coleslaw. It was lightly dressed and also tasty. The shrimp tacos on corn tortillas were really good too. We couldn't leave without having the raspberry Datil cheesecake or the caramel cheesecake. Both were delicious and homemade. I live right down the road from this place so obviously I have tried it a few times. Each time it was literally the worst customer service I've ever experienced. The food is also very mediocre. I wanted to like it, I really did but I felt super uncomfortable each time I was there, as if I was inconveniencing the staff. The kitchen staff seems professional but the front of house waitresses( a couple in particular) are always super rude and lack people skills. Perhaps the hiring managers could have higher criteria for personality types of who they hire. read more

The place looks a little off the beaten path and has a private parking lot in the back. There are multiple brightly colored rooms to choose to sit in and each room decorated with paintings from local artists. What can I say - lunch was fantastic. I ordered the wet burrito, which was the largest burrito I've ever seen. It was probably the size of 2-3 chipotle burritos and only $8. They had a nice selection of local craft beers and some from home (they had victory brews which I was surprised to find in Florida). We ordered the nachos for an appetizer, which were also delicious. My friend ordered the chocolate peanut butter and cookie dough cheesecake for dessert and it was essentially orgasmic.
