This is my favorite spot in killington. The omelets are amazing and the pancakes are the best I've ever had.

The NY strip that came with the $20 steak and eggs was a grey, boiled overcooked slab (they killed it). It looked very unappetizing and tasted even worse (tough & bland). The home fries were beyond well done. They were black. I'm not exaggerating. Just wondering how they even got to the plate. Irish poached eggs sounded much better than it looked or tasted. It was also bland. I hate to leave bad reviews but I feel like I paid for a poorly executed and expensive meal ($58 for two people). Maybe we caught them on a really bad day. This was our second time at this diner while in Killington, Vermont. I ordered the Homemade Corned Beef Hash and poached eggs which is exactly what I ordered 3 years ago. The corned beef hash was a macerated pulp fried flat. It was not edible. I would suggest the Hormel brand for $3.97 at Walmart for a better hash. Over good experience. The home fries were large pieces of potato which were seasoned and grilled. They were cooked throughly and tasted good. I added onion to mine. My omelet was good with the veggies and meat cooked into the egg, however it was a slightly overcooked causing the egg to be a little dry. My son ordered the steak & eggs and when asked, requested his steak a medium rare. What he received was tender and juicy but the wasn't a bit of pink, let alone red, to be seen. Got seated immediately on a Sunday morning around 10am during ski season. The restaurant was quite busy and it look awhile for our server to take orders and even more time for our food to come out. Once we received it, the meal was delicious! I'm sad ! We were soooooo beyond excited to return to this place after visiting last year. I was actually staying at the hotel directly behind it ! I ordered the same thing as last year and I had been counting down the days to trying it again. Unfortunately it didn't come close to being as good. I will say that part of the service was great. Overall good eats, large portions, and fair prices. They have indoor and outdoor dining. Our boys split the pancakes with strawberries (comes with two) and I ordered a side of bacon. They polished it off, a 6 and 8 year old. So not too much food. We tried two of the daily specials: the popover and sausage gravy dishes. Both were a lot of food that we could not finish. Husband liked his popover breakfast. The habanero maple jam it cam with sounded good. The popover looked a little over-baked, but I did not try it. My sausage gravy was just ok, and the fam agreed that I make it better in my own kitchen. The biscuit looked over-baked and was very salty. I knew since I am not down south, the sausage gravy may miss the mark, but I figured why not try it and be pleasantly surprised. This is a popular and busy little joint. read more

We were looking forward to an excellent breakfast, but sadly, it was not. The restaurant was dirty, we sat next to the window with dead bugs and dusty blinds. The back door by the bathrooms was wide open with a flimsy screen allowing all bugs in. The French toast special was inedible. We told the waitress the food wasn't good and she said, okay. The breakfast burrito was terrible and the home fries burnt on every plate. Service was lacking refinement and normal interactions. I would find a better place for breakfast. read more

LOVED the Banana Bread French Toast. I got five large pieces of banana bread dipped in egg and covered in cream cheese. It honestly didn't even need the cream cheese, the bread was so good on its own. It was also great the next day cold. The Chocolate Chip Pancakes also came with a generous serving and equally as delicious. The Johnny was their form of Eggs Benedict. The ham was bigger than the English muffin that it was on. They also serve Mimosas, Bloody Marys and Irish Coffee for those looking to boozy brunch. read more

Stopped here for brunch on my way to the spa. It was very busy when I walked in but since I was flying solo, the weight wasn't too long. I sat at the counter. I ordered the maple sausage stuffed waffles and a side of home fries well done. The waffle was delicious. It was nicely studded with crumbled sausage. It was crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Two other tables got sat after us, they got drinks from a guy who was wiping and setting up tables, we were just ignored. Ordered the blueberry cream cheese french toast. I expected the French toast to be stuffed with the cream cheese but it was just placed on top. The bread of the French toast was rounds instead of squares and was very savory. Felt like I was earing some griddle cakes. It was very hard to cut as well. The cream cheese and maple syrup did nothing to soften the bread perhaps if it had been stuffed. Having said that not many options in Killington especially on a Monday so if you do have to eat here avoid the French toast. Took awhile to receive the bill even though it had slowed down and you pay at the register. read more

The food was NOT very good, the staff was friendly but not very efficient. There were dirty tables left untouched for the whole time we were there. The biscuits were not edible, the gravy was runny n tasteless. The home fries tasted like they were leftovers from the previous day. Best brunch I've found in the area, their rustic and sincere venue reflect the honest character of Vermont. Good coffee, great prices. When you're spending $60 a meal at breakfast or lunch it's refreshing to see a $28 bill for a full service brunch. On our way to killington mountains we stopped at the backcountry cafe and weren't disappointed! The only thing missing from this place are huge windows to be able to enjoy the view. But the service was very friendly and upbeat and the food was very good. We had Johnny Benedict and if I didn't give it 5 stars it definitely is because of the "cheese sauce". It is just plain gross. Back Country Cafe was right by the property is rented, so we went there twice. It was packed on the Sunday we went. Totally mobbed around 10am. People may have been trying to get a quick bite before heading home early. It was very quiet the next day. Great service both days. The gentleman behind the counter was spot on no matter how busy. Cute place. Very homey/log cabin-y on the interior. I loved corned beef hash. I even liked the eggs, and I can always take or leave eggs. The second day I got the special which was biscuits and gravy. It was pretty good too. Everything was reasonably priced. Don't think I paid more than $12 either day. It's a a shame this restaurant doesn't have better management because the food is solid. Unfortunately, you have a long wait to be seated, and even if you seat yourself at the bar, the staff will just pass you by without even acknowledging your presence. We finally broke down and asked the bus girl for coffee! The same girl who was on the bar, was also in charge of seating customers and ringing up checks! To say she was in the weeds is an understatement. Shame on management for putting her in that position! Beyond that, I don't think the owners have had a deep cleaning in years! There is dust/dirt/grease build up on everything above your food! The lights, the deer heads, the frying pans, and even in the bathroom all along base boards - and inch of disgustingness! Once you walk in you're greeted by warm cabin interior and maybe a deer head looking straight at you. I enjoyed a huge platter of banana bread french toast which was on moist banana bread. Others at my table also ordered for brunch and all their platters were very generous in size and priced right. The staff continuously came around and refilled the coffee cups and were very friendly. I've been coming to killington annually to snowboard for a few years now, and most years we always stop by back country. They get quite busy, and not a huge space but they accommodate well and you get your food rather quickly. I usually get an egg dish, or omelette. I'm never disappointed with my dish and their omelettes are super stuffed and fluffy as well! Their waffles and pancakes are also a good treat. Really no complaints.
