Yes, hello, I love you! Caught an early ferry just to be able to get a dozen donuts from Martha's Vineyard Gourmet Cafe & Bakery. Trust me when I say, I would traverse any obstacle to get to these preciouses. I will go through front doors, back doors, side doors, skylights, or chimneys. Everyone moved fast to get the line going especially with clueless tourists- I don't know how you do it! Then right after I walked out of the shop, there was a line around the block! Sadly, Backdoor has lost the charm and ambiance that they were once known for. It was originally a small specialty bakery, unique to the Vineyard. The " front door " ( MV Bakery) provided cakes, pastries and bread by day, while at night the BD opened after dark for fresh hot donuts, "Charlie " ice cream sundaes, fried dough sticks and more. After getting your treat you could go back to MV Bakery for great coffee, sit and enjoy your dessert and purchase other offering. Unfortunately since being sold, things have changed with the new business model. The " front door" has gotten a modern upgrade, reduced hours and discontinued many old favorites, including smiley face cookies. The focus seems to be strictly revenue, with the addition of the Boston pop up. Unfortunately, BD has become a victim, of its own growth. The fun summer experience has become chaotic and lost its appeal. There is no longer pride in the products or the quality that BD was once known for. We visited the last week of July and have been customers for more than 30 years. After waiting and ordering for 50 minutes, we received a raw Apple fritter and a half filled ugly GF donut. Disappointingly, it's just not worth the hype anymore; the tradition is gone. read more

If you look at the pie plate sized apple fritter as a cousin to the donut, almost $7 per is blasphemy especially when the ratio of yeasty spiced dough to chunks of fruit and cinnamon ooze is too high. But if you treat the $7 fritter as a shareable dessert (or ferry snack, as it were) with a delectably sweet glaze and a toothsome crumb that didn't melt away like a sugarfat Krispy Kreme nor did it induce lockjaw with a stale, glutinous density from being overworked, then the raves ring true. I should have gotten more donuts, as it's a hipster donut shop in a land where hipsters fed to great whites, but the epic stature of this singular treat was too hyped. Fantastic apple fritters and cinamon roll, fluffy with a bit of that perfect chewiness in the dough. Eat it when it comes out hot or cooled off a bit. It is still excellent after 25sec in the microwave the next day as well. Both are sweet without being too sugary with an excellent blend of the savory from the apple or cinnamon respectively. The lemon donut is quite zesty and tangy. I thought it was pretty good. The shop is a very convenient walk distance from some of the local dining and club establishments so drop by and grab some after your dinner and then head out clubbing. read more

Delicious apple fritters but all the other reviews mention that fact. Bacon and Maple glazed donut great even the next morning. Staff friendly and the line moves fairly quickly about 5-10minutes when it started a little by the door. I didn't get a cupcake, still regretting it as others reviews rave about them. Apple fritters were warm and perfectly glazed one had only an few apple chunks and the other during back door donuts, were full of apple. I preferred the morning version. It reheats great in the toaster oven. Overall well worth the $4 and will be a staple in all my future visits to the island. read more

I don't usually like donuts, but these were delicious. The reason for the 2 stars was because of the girl working the back door, India. I don't know why she doesn't find a new job since this one clearly makes her miserable. No one wants a rude server, especially at night when buying a donut. I went there on 3 different occasions and she was more and more miserable each time. She actually told her coworker she had a countdown until she was out this place. They changed the interior so it feels modern and has as hipster vibe now. I actually miss the old bakery because it felt authentic to the island. Baked goods are always great. My wife and I have a habit of trying different doughnuts when we travel. We heard great things about Back Door Doughnuts. I'd love to say the doughnuts were average. They were not. We ordered a cinnamon sugar, a Boston Cream and an apple fritter and the total came to $9.67. The apple fritter was good, it was hot and better than average. The Boston Cream and cinnamon were inedible. We each took one bite each and threw the rest away. This was after waiting in the standard 10-15 minute line to place our order, and then waiting another 30 minutes to find out they had lost our order. The person we finally talked to said they were waiting for more apple fritters to be made. If you'd like a better doughnut, go to Dunkin' or any supermarket chain in America. I have been coming here for over 30 years and there have been many changes. One big changes is the apple fritter. They used to be a fist sized delicacy and now they are this delightful and grand ring pastry. They are just as good as when I was a child but larger and more expensive. I guess everything is more expensive now on the island... All in all, there's a good variety of pastries and beverages. A must go if you come to the island. You Have to go at night so you are getting them freshly baked. You have to get the apple fritter as it is the size of your. It was huge! Any filled donut has a solid inch of filling stuffed perfectly inside. You can't go wrong with any of their flavors. I do have to say the customer service is so so. The person running the register couldn't seemed to be bothered to help you with their merchandise. I asked if they had a shirt in a small and said he'd go check but never left the register to check and after waiting for our donuts (had to wait longer for the apple fritter as they were literally handing them out as soon as they were done cooking them) had to ask the person handing out orders if they could check and a few seconds later popped up with the shirt in the size I wanted. Although they are currently closed for the winter, this review is from when they were open. I have gotten a cake from this place twice and their cakes are really not that good. Here are the issues I found with their cakes: 1) Way too much frosting between layers and surrounding the cake. The frosting is almost as thick as the cake! 2) Their buttercream frosting tastes sub-par, as if they just don't have the recipe right. It's too sweet and doesn't have any real flavor other than sugary. i.e. doesn't taste like vanilla, chocolate, etc. 3) The cake itself is dry and should really be made more moist 4) Overpriced given the above issues I will add a photo showing the crazy amount of frosting if possible. Positives: 1) The people are very nice and accommodating 2) Back Door Donuts is fantastic, but since that is a separate business with a separate Yelp page, I am not factoring that into this review.
