What else can you say but...Mmmm Donuts.... If you are visiting Martha's Vineyard this is a must try in Oak Bluffs. Located in the back parking lot of Reliable Market, behind the post office on Kennebec Ave, you will see a purple door. At 7pm Thursday to Sunday that door opens to a magical sugary smell of bakers making donuts and other sugary delights. The door leads to the kitchen of Back Door Dounts Cafe, where from 8am to 3pm you can buy donuts coffee etc. But after 7pm is where the magic happens. The bakers are busy making the next day's supply and people line up to get a hot out of the fryer gourmet donut. We tried the maple bacon, buttermilk glazed, chocolate frosted, and cinnamon sugar donuts. By far the best we had was the maple bacon, like taking a bite of a fluffy belgian waffle, covered in maple syrup and bacon. Chocolate frosted was covered in gooey goodness. The cinnamon sugar were your typical donut, just hot. Buttermilk glazed was also good. But the star of the show is the apple fritter. These things are huge (think the size of a small salad plate) loaded with fresh apples covered in a sweet sugary glaze. We saved ours for breakfast the next day. So hard to do but worth it. Donuts are between $2 and $3 each. Apple fritter is just under $6. During Covid they have two ordering stations where only 2 people from your party are allowed to stand in line and a separate "waiting zone" where one person is supposed to wait for the donuts to come out from the back door in a paper bag with your order name on it. System works pretty well, but the restrictions were semi-ignored by the younger drinking crowd. Oak Bluffs has a mask order in effect, which most were following and the staff did regularly come out and ask people to spread out. The service is quick despite the long line! Friendly faces greet you once you get there. The first one I ate was the honey dipped, which was my favorite, it was warm and melted in my mouth! Second up was the apple cider, not as melt in your mouth but the flavor was still great Third was the butternut crunch and I have to say this was the one I really wanted and I was quite disappointed. I don't understand the hoopla surrounding these donuts. I'd rate them as just "average". Sure they are better than the donuts sold at Stop N Shop but they SHOULD be better than the donuts sold at Stop n Shop. Afterall this place is a full fledged bakery. Back Door Donuts is run by the same people that run Martha's Vineyard Gourmet Café & Bakery. The Bakery people operate the front door and the Back Door people operate the back door. The front door closes much earlier than the back door. The back door usually remains open until 1:00 AM. My recommendation is to purchase the day-old donuts at the "front door" entrance right before they close. The selection is sort of limited but the donuts are half price. Yes half price. Alright, I get the hype. These donuts are literally served out of the back door of the shop. You're essentially waiting in line in a parking lot and a single blackboard menu on the side of an open door. After you order you wait for them to whip you up a hot donut and they hand it to you straight from the kitchen. Been visiting every summer for over a decade. Back Door Donuts used to be one of the highlights of the trip. Once the "Charlie" (which was a donut with ice cream) was removed from the menu, we should've known it was the beginning of the end. It has since gone from a local "in the know" gem, to a completely franchise like feel. The menu and recipes have certainly changed as well as the branding and length time of the wait. Before, it was well worth it waiting in line. Now, it's nostalgic to swing by if it isn't busy, but not so sure it is still with the hype. Sadly, Backdoor has lost the charm and ambiance that they were once known for. It was originally a small specialty bakery, unique to the Vineyard. The " front door " ( MV Bakery) provided cakes, pastries and bread by day, while at night the BD opened after dark for fresh hot donuts, "Charlie " ice cream sundaes, fried dough sticks and more. After getting your treat you could go back to MV Bakery for great coffee, sit and enjoy your dessert and purchase other offering. Unfortunately since being sold, things have changed with the new business model. The " front door" has gotten a modern upgrade, reduced hours and discontinued many old favorites, including smiley face cookies. The focus seems to be strictly revenue, with the addition of the Boston pop up. Unfortunately, BD has become a victim, of its own growth. The fun summer experience has become chaotic and lost its appeal. There is no longer pride in the products or the quality that BD was once known for. We visited the last week of July and have been customers for more than 30 years. After waiting and ordering for 50 minutes, we received a raw Apple fritter and a half filled ugly GF donut. Disappointingly, it's just not worth the hype anymore; the tradition is gone. read more

This was a staple in Oak Bluffs. Apparently the shop is under new ownership and had no experience running a bakery or worked in the establishment prior to taking over. The "bakery store front is open Thursday-Monday from 8 to 5. I visited at 1 pm and they were out of apple fritters and was told to come back tomorrow or at 7 pm. Previously this never happened. The legend of backdoor donuts was that donuts were available throughout the night as the bakers made the magic happened, now the backdoor has hours from 7pm to 10:30. So what happened when I showed up at 10pm? The parking lot was empty, I walked up and asked for 6 Apple fritters and was told that they had 1 and when I asked how long until the next batch? I was told tomorrow. I hope the issue is Covid related and not being able to hire and train a decent crew, but I don't think so. This is bad, this is bad-bad. read more

Trust me when I say, I would traverse any obstacle to get to these preciouses. I will go through front doors, back doors, side doors, skylights, or chimneys.
