The wonderful aroma of fresh baked donuts was so delicious, I followed literally my nose and found myself at the back door of an old post office. Of course there were like 30 people in front of me at 8:30pm on a Sunday! But it was worth the wait. We got the Apple fritter which is their best seller ( I agree, it was like Christmas in my mouth), got the maple bacon donut ( not bad) and the Boston Cream which I was not impressed. This was on the top of my list to try on my trip to MV and it did not disappoint! We were a group of 6 and we decided to share a variety of donuts. We ended up going with Apple Fritter, Buttermilk Glazed, Cinnamon Sugar, Chocolate Frosted, Party Sprinkles, and Coconut. They were all very yummy but our favorite was the Apple Fritter, its huge first of all and is melt in your mouth good, I could of eaten 6 of them alone. If you only buy one thing from here it would be the Apple Fritter. The service is fast and the people who work there were really nice and patient as we picked out the 6 that we wanted which we appreciated. Apparently my father in law was looking for an excuse to return here and was happy to use us for that purpose. We rolled up when there wasn't much of a line and walked away with $30 worth of donuts. I am a yeast donut only kind of girl, and I thought these were pretty fantastic. I liked the slight crust that the fresh donuts have. I loved the apple fritter. And I have to admit that the cake donuts were good too. I even went back a few days later when the line was much longer. This place was small but ordering was quick, friendly, and efficient. We ordered the honey dipped and the old fashioned donuts. We ate them on a bench outside. The honey dipped donut had a good taste, maybe just a a tad bit too sweet. The old fashioned donut didn't have much taste and was very standard. Got to back door at 7:10pm. There was a line of about 10 parties in front of us, but it moved quickly. We waited no more than 5-10 minutes to order. There were at least 3 people up front taking orders. Someone came by with menus while we were in line so ordering was quick. There was a huge selection to choose from! We got apple fritters and several other doughnuts. Everything was tasty! There was a small parking lot by the line but it was full. Best to go by foot or if stopping by with a car, have someone order the doughnuts and the the other person with the car circle around the block. This was pretty awesome. Likely the most amazing donut I will ever have. Why? Fresh, warm, delicious. We arrived close to 8:30 pm not during peak season. The line was pretty short with two families ahead of us. I was surprised that they stepped out of line with empty hands. We found out why. Some of the donuts weren't ready yet. Ok by me! I'll get something that is! Luckily, what I had smelled from blocks away was ready. I opted for the cinnamon sugar and hubby got the HUGE apple fritter. Both were warm as we carried away our goodies. We didn't wait. We dug in as we walked back to the hotel. Every taste bud came alive as the sugar hit my mouth. Holy moly! So good. I had a bit of my husband's fritter and it too was amazing. The attached parking is non-existent in the summer, however nearby parking places can be had for a shake of a finger or luck of the draw. With many assortments no one goes without on this menu. So the first couple of times that I had their donuts, were great, and I would really love nothing more than to give them a five-star review; their apple fritters are, honestly, to die for...when they're done well. this last time that I got the apple fritter, was genuinely disappointing. It came out within a minute/minute and a half, which was the first red flag, that I definitely should've heeded, because every other time it usually takes at least a couple of minutes, that I never mind waiting for, because that's how I know it's fresh, y'know? But I shrugged it off and went on my merry way, and it's not until I was actually walking home that I opened up the bag and pulled out probably the most disappointing donut I'd ever had--it was very clearly burnt in places, it was lukewarm (when it's usually still hot by the time I get home), and it was somehow both bland and acrid tasting. This is honestly a genius idea. Have your regular business open during the day and right when it's getting dark start pumping out fresh, hot donuts at amazing prices until 1 AM. Like who doesn't want a piping hot donut at the end of a long day chilling on the beach or walking around Oak Bluffs. After getting off the ferry we went straight to Back Door and waited in a long line that had already formed. It's a perfect wait though since it gave us enough time to figure out what we wanted and if we wanted to order 2 donuts (always the dilemma since they're delicious, but the best part is eating them straight out of the frier). We decided that we would come back again before leaving the Vineyard, so settled on one donut each. I got a butternut cake donut the first time and a chocolate dipped chocolate cake donut the second time. I'm actually crying thinking about how amazing those donuts were. I apologize for not having photos--it was too dark and I wanted to eat them while they were nice and hot. The chocolate dipped donut is a chocolate-lover's dream since the chocolate glaze is just as thick and chocolatey as hot fudge. The thick glaze pairs well with the cake donut which is perfectly crispy on the outside and dissolves in your mouth as you bite into its soft, pillowy cake center. The butternut cake donut was also exceptional--exactly like the cake donut I just described but with buttery bits of sugar and flour all over the donut. I definitely want to try their coconut chocolate cake donut next time (didn't know this was a thing until after I ordered!!) and one of their famous apple fritters (be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes for a fritter though). It really is for the tourists. "best ever" in OB or on the island is because there aren't many donut places, first of all. And, the others are quite poor for any one's standard. Oh, the worse is at the Stop & Shop's. Just the average donut, but, freshly (?) fried and dripping oils. The staff are working hard. They are very friendly, exchanging some nice jokes, too. But, the Summer night time setting and the ridiculously long line makes the business popular, and there aren't any things to do, after the restaurant visits, except for the silly coin game rooms, or ice cream parlors. So, fried donuts sell. but, I find the quality no better than others. Any freshly fried donut will taste good. That is why fried food always sell in the tourist places. I think the hype of the Summer tourists, who wish to go back home with some quirky memory fed their fame and success. Good for them! But, I refuse to wait in the line, when the juvenile puff the cigarette smoke in my face, and I hate to think of getting a couple of donuts, waiting for 40+ Min. As a hearing impaired person, my girlfriend was treated disrespectfully by the staff member that took care of us. When trying to inform the staff member she is half deaf, the staff member proceeded to talk quieter as if she did not believe us. When asking for what type of tea lattes the store featured, we received attitude and were told "what you want me to add milk to tea?" Then after feeling deflated we settled for a hot tea and when asking what types of tea the store featured, the staff member rolled her eyes and just grabbed all of the tea types and placed it in front of us. So this place went through an ownership change about a year ago and the new owner needs to get their act together. Tonight we went there for their signature item. We paid a super premium and ended up leaving after waiting almost a half an hour to get our dough nuts. We left empty handed as it did not look like they had the staffing right or the desire to make their customers satisfied. We were not the only ones who left. I am so not the type to be interested in standing in line for a donut. Pro tip: Change your interests, Denise. There really aren't any words for what I experienced. I was with a group of friends and had a bit of everything: glazed, chocolate, a fritter, and the Charlie donut (choice of donut, topped with ice cream and whipped cream - OMG!). Rarely do I experience sweets that stop me in my tracks, but this was definitely one of those moments. Everything was so good! I'm talking perfectly sweet without being too sweet, piping hot, and full of flavor. A few of my friends also had the maple bacon donut and described it as a religious experience. Guys, just get the donuts. Yes, fly all the way to Martha's Vineyard solely for a donut. You won't be alone in this quest.
