Back Door doesn't open until 7pm (stays open til 1am!!), but it looks like the front door is open during the day! We stopped by the front around 5pm on a Saturday and were greeted with a minimal selection of donuts, but FRESH HOT APPLE FRITTERS!! These were absolutely the best apple fritters I've ever had. They're HUGE.. and while you think you may be able to finish one -- I certainly did!! -- think again.. the sweetness definitely builds up. But I LOVE that they put real apple pieces in it. I ate some of it the next day and it was still delish! We returned around 7:30pm to the back door and there was already a line. We only waited less than 10 mins and decided on the apple cider cake donut and boston cream. Unfortunately, I don't think they gave me the apple cider donut because it was super plain and actually kinda dry (sadface) The boston cream was really good though! especially because it was fresh. CASH ONLY! Donut wait in line for 15 minutes to find out you need cash! Although, if you know MV, you know that cash only places are a plenty. Definitely worth the wait, go with friends and just enjoy the atmosphere and experience. You're not breaking the bank here, it's under $2 for most Donuts, just have fun with it! Why does this bakery have to be all the way in MV? I'd go back to the island just for the donuts. Amazing flavors, well worth everything including the ferry ride and standing in line at the store. It's crazy how good these donuts are considering the very good prices. All the flavors which we tried were great, especially the Boston creme donut. Ordered a birthday cake and total DISASTER. First, the man who answers the phone needs to find another line of work. He was annoyed to have to answer basic questions like what flavors do you have. Second, the day we went to pick up the cake THEY DIDN'T MAKE IT. Never mind that they take your credit card when you order and threaten to charge you if you don't pick up. I had heard the hype behind these donuts and since I was attending a Sox game I figured I'd give this place a shot afterwards. We preordered a few different ones to try for pickup. This was an adorable donut shop in Martha's Vineyard! They have a super cool gift shop with shirts and cups. The maple bacon donut was delicious. However, we weren't big fans of the buttercrunch donut. It was dry and didn't have a ton of flavor. We got in line about 30 minutes before the stored opened at 8 am on a Tuesday in July. The employees work quickly so I would say there's no need to get in line earlier. I felt like people who were #15-20 were out by the time we had finished our donuts. Because we were the first ones in and this was our first time, I felt like we had a lot to choose. I opted for a Boston Cream and a glazed. Both were still warm and both were fluffy. I liked the filling of the Boston Cream donut. My dining companion had a shredded coconut donut and a honey dipped donut. One criticism is the packaging. Because the donuts are warm, any topping sticks t the wax paper and immediately impacts the overall flavor and texture. I don't know what the solution is though. Our family has been going to Back Door for YEARS and today was the first truly disappointing experience that we've had in terms of customer service. The women working the register were unnecessarily curt and gave us such grief over wanting to have a box for the donuts. Listen, they cost enough so just give us the goddam box! This review is for the Boston pop up location. I have no idea about the Oak Bluffs location but would imagine it to be much better. There was no separate yelp for it. We loved the donuts the first time we visited a few of months ago. Fresh, warm, delicious presented in a nice box of six. All perfectly glazed and in tact. Since the first visit, they have been continually going down hill on all of our five additional visits. Problem is being lack of freshness, incorrect orders with the wrong donuts with no explanations, or six smushed in a small bag. Unbelievable presentation! Last night was the frosting on the donut sort to speak! We ordered six as we always do, and specifically requested a "box" in the notation on the order since the last time they were ruined by being squeezed into the bag ( all toppings melted and off, donuts broken apart). They gave us the wrong order again with 5 of the 6 donuts being wrong. To add to this unappetizing mess, all the toppings were off of the donuts from being piled on top of each other in a small warm in the bag. The were all dry, crumbly, broken and tasteless! When paying premium prices for supposedly a specialty product this is unacceptable. Dunkin donuts can do better than this and half the price, and in a box! Unfortunately, the quality of the donuts and the service of the staff has gone downhill since my first positive experience. Nothing fancy here, just a back door, a card table, a laminated piece of paper menu and a long line...but the final result is heavenly doughy goodness that melts in your mouth. We always leave with two bags full and hardly make it home with any left. Gourmet Café & Bakery where they offer their freshly baked wares daily from 7:30 pm and 12:58 am at their literal back door by the Post Office. Cash Only! When I asked someone for directions to Back Door Donuts, he responded with, "Oh, you're going to stand in that 100 foot long line?" Yup, it is well known. Cash Only! We got in line shortly before 7pm and were pleased to find that the back door opened for business a bit earlier than advertised. The line wasn't that quick moving, but we were happy to receive our bagged baked goods in hand in exchange for our greenbacks and change. Cash Only! When we tucked in, the apple fritter was still warm and yummy. It was huge, and somewhat pullapart, like a monkey bread in a way. For $4.50 it was about the size of three of their cake donuts, and well worth it! Cash Only! One friend equated their butternut crunch white cake donuts $1.25 to those of Dunkin Donuts (aka, nothing special), but the maple bacon raised dough donut $2 was a mix of savory smokey bacon and sweet maple glaze. Cash Only! When next I visit, I'm definitely getting the apple fritter again. And maybe I'll try one of their other raised dough creations.
