The buttermilk was peculiar tasting and the texture, which should have been akin to an old-fashioned, was also off. Not worth ingesting. The oil-ladened double chocolate had one note: sugar. After learning about Backdoor doughnuts via Instagram, We were so excited to be a part of the back door experience on our recent visit to Martha's Vineyard. We got there about 8pm and waited in line for about Wo minutes to order. Then waited about 15 minutes for our order. We didn't mind though as we considered the wait part of the experience. The doughnuts are $3,$4 and I think $8 for an apple fritter. Not cheap, not too Expensive. They crammed 5 doughnuts in a small brown paper bag. And the apple fritter in a bag by itself. Two of the doughnuts had filling and the filling was completely smooshed out by the time we open the bag. They all were a hot mess when we got back to our hotel and the Apple fritter was in 3 pieces. I was not impressed at all. Usually when we have a delicious treat on vacation we tend to go back to the same place day after day. Needless to say we never went back to Backdoor doughnuts. read more

Can't say I've tried too many apple fritters in my lifetime but Back Door's is about as good as it gets. It was nice and fresh with a crisp exterior and a soft and chewy interior. I'm so sad to write this because I love love love Oak Bluffs and this has been something we have loved for years. A fun experience of waiting out in the dark for fresh donuts, a very unique tradition. But this time we were just so sadly disappointed. The donuts were crazy expensive, tiny (my mother held hers up and we laughed at the ridiculous size of it as she said "is this a lifesaver?") and to be honest the 99 cent donuts at Market basket are far superior in taste. What a crowd! Daytime coffee shop turned literal back door doughnut dispensary. That definitely adds to the ambience. The line starts early, gets really long but moves pretty quickly. Many opportunities to chat it up with fellow line attendees and enjoy doughnuts in the parking lot. Took the ferry to Martha's Vineyard for the day and this was the first stop and now a must go every time we come!! Donuts are fresh and flavorful, but a little pricey. There was no line when we came around 11:30 but would be worth the wait if there was one. Was able to get an apple fritter right out of the oven and I can't describe how good it was. Almost always there's a line, and sure enough, when we went, we had to wait in line for about 20 min to get in and order. We got their famous Apple fritter, which was huge ! Enough for leftovers. Please update the hours on the off season. Was here and made 2 separate trips thinking they were open. I'm sure it's great as the reviews are amazing but quite frustrating to not even see a sign on the door that they are closed for the season. Ordered a birthday cake and total DISASTER. First, the man who answers the phone needs to find another line of work. He was annoyed to have to answer basic questions like what flavors do you have. Second, the day we went to pick up the cake THEY DIDN'T MAKE IT. Never mind that they take your credit card when you order and threaten to charge you if you don't pick up. But the ONE THING they had to do -MAKE THE CAKE- they didn't actually do. No birthday cake at all. No excuse. This place lives up to the hype. There is a line, that can be quite long, but it goes rather quickly. There is a young man working that politely request that only 2 people wait in your party. This means if you arrive in a group of 4, please divide yourself into two groups, standing six feet apart. The wait was short, we arrived around 815pm, a Thursday evening. Now to the main event. The donuts are unique and are delivered in a bag, still warm. The Apple fritter was the highlight for me. It's a huge fritter, bigger than the size of your hand. First time in Martha's Vineyard and my father-in-law showed me this place. We came at a very good time because there were no lines. The selection of donuts was smaller than what I am used to to but they all looked very good. I ended up getting a coconut donut and was pleasantly surprised. I've been to MV on 2 separate long weekends and have managed to hit up BDD every day at least once if not twice in one day! This is an amazing spot, I was very impressed. The honey glaze was the perfect breakfast choice, traditional and sweet. I also got an iced latte, and they brew La Colombe products which give it such a smooth taste and texture. What happened?!? We've been dreaming of coming back here for 7 years and finally got the chance. Now this is when it was MV Bakery in the front that had a mom and pop feel and Back Door, well, at the back. The double chocolate were dream worthy. We went to order ahead on the website. Nope- disabled. Okay, we're driving from the other side of the island so we'll call. Nope. They have it set up to either give you messages or sends you a text to order which takes you to their ordering platform which is disabled. Nice. We make the trek over and hope for the best. They went in the back and put 6 fresh, warm double chocolates in a box. Oh man, we were salivating! We both bit into it and I immediately only tasted oil. (A tell tale that the oil wasn't hot enough or overcrowded while frying up) I didn't say anything because I didn't want to ruin the experience for the hubby since these are his favorites but I couldn't help noticing he wasn't saying anything either. When I told him he could have mine, he said they tasted different and I said like oil and he agreed. We waited for them to cool down for an hour or so in case it was a temp thing. Nope. Into the trash they went which leaves you real salty after paying $20 for 6 donuts. A few days later, we decided to give a fritter a try. Dough in the middle. Sigh.
