I absolutely love everything in this store. If I won the lottery, I would probably come here and just buy the entire store and try to find a way to shove it all into my house. It is gorgeously appointed and each piece is so incredibly well-chosen, unique, and elegant. I was very surprised to read reviews of poor customer service because I have always found the people who work here to be warm, helpful, and kind. They clearly love all of the pieces as well, and have such an eye for style. There was also a review about how the fragrances here are too strong; I respectfully disagree. I am sure that someone who dislikes perfumes in general would have a tough time in this store, but for anyone else it smells simply divine. Finally, they have the most GORGEOUS seasonal decorations. At Christmas, especially, their store is one of my favorite places to visit just to get into the mood. What a special place! read more

This store is absolutely enchanting! The owner is joyful and has a sense of style and class that is unmatched from any store I have been in austin. Her merchandising techniques allows you to view products without feeling overwhelmed. This is my favorite spot to buy little presents for my friends. I have an appointment with the interior decorator I can't wait to see her magic. Truly you can see this is her passion and it shows in her business. If your preferences lean towards the more traditional, Back Home would be a terrific place to shop. I was searching for the "perfect" end table and lamp for a client and stopped here to look. The staff is wonderfully accommodating and allowed me to set a table up with a lamp on it to photograph so I could show my client. Several days later, we decided it was not exactly right but I really appreciated the employees hustling around me to get the setting for the photo just right. I'm not used to that! While I was there I found a great (and cheap) oversized straw bag with a leather handle to hold my tape measure, notebook and samples. I mean it is huge--over two feet long and about 16" high. I shop the Westgate Central Market shopping center at least monthly, if not every couple of weeks. I've always seen this store when I go to another store and thought to myself, "It looks intriguing but not today." Well today my mom and I decided to go in and take a look because we are looking for high quality silk flower for my wedding bouquet. We were both taken by surprise by how charming, well put together, and unique this shop is! I mean, literally, there wasn't a table we didn't walk by that something didn't jump out at us and say "Take me home!" Their displays of furniture, home decor, gifts, home fragrances and bath and body products are adorable and well thought out. They have a nice collection of affordable gift items such as books, notepads, magnets and jewelry that will bring a smile to anyone's face. Some of the furniture pieces are very unique and not much higher than quality pieces you might see in a department store. We left with a very cool tree branch/birds nest piece to add into the large/tall arrangement on the food table and we'll be back to pick up some adorable Austin made tags that can be used to label foods and beverages. We're also bringing back half the women in my family to show the store off to because it's just THAT cool! My husband and I shop here regularly. The owners/employees are always and helpful and friendly and their selections for Home decor and furnishings are amazing! From art to flower arrangements, furniture to gifts and candles and even rugs - we've purchased it all here and been thrilled with our choices. Highly recommend! It's unfortunate that this store will bear the brunt of my outrage, because so many businesses are guilty. Walked in this afternoon hoping to purchase items I felt certain that they peddled in. Upon entering I was immediately hit with toxic air from a zillion different fragrance sources - the scented candle in the entry was just the most obvious. When are business owners going to realize that no one has ever made a decision to leave a store because it did not smell like lavender or vanilla or whatever, but many people, like myself, who have allergies (and who doesn't in Austin?) leave post-haste to avoid the headache, shortness of breath etc that comes from this toxic stuff. I left almost immediately, but not before realizing that they indeed carried many things I would have been happy to purchase. And since others are weighing in on the customer service issue, I will say I was greeted with a "Hi" yelled from the far back of the store upon my entry. But that's it. No one came forward to see what I wanted. They were in the back chatting amongst themselves. So even if I wasn't heading towards anaphylactic shock, I would have left fairly soon. read more

I love Back Home. The store is beautiful and always smells so good. For twenty plus years this has been my favorite store to shop at in Austin. Over the years, I have purchased a sofa, rugs, lamps, candles, jewelry, and the ever so exquisite Christmas decor at this store. The French Finds are charming and are always appreciated when gifted to my friends and family. The staff is always welcoming and helpful at Back Home. I am in the process of redecorating my home and decided to visit this store, as they had a few attractive pieces of furniture sitting outside. Upon my arrival and throughout the entire duration of my store visit, I was never greeted or acknowledged by any of the employees, even after 30 minutes in the store. None of them were super busy, and they had plenty of time to chat with one another. Although I found some items of interest, including a couple of the light fixtures, a coffee table, and some topiaries, I decided to leave after the lack of interaction. I'm not OK with spending money at a place that treats their customers in that manner. A simple greeting would have been nice. Wish I never would have wasted my time. The store represents a snotty attitude and employees only appear to cater to people they perceive as having money. They were especially super friendly to the older women in the store. They could have made a big sale if they would have been willing to me treat me with courtesy, respect, and offered to help. My experience in there made me wonder how much money they turn away on a daily basis, with their selective attitudes toward people. So baffling. I took my business elsewhere and in the end found better items for my home in a different store. read more

Disclaimer: If you check out the rest of my reviews you will see that I'm very fair. I don't take these things lightly and I will even go back to correct a review if I have a better experience the second time around. I encountered some of the RUDEST customer service I have ever experienced when I decided to return some Christmas ornaments that I decided not to gift. The store claims that there were "hand written" signs claiming that "All Christmas sales are final after December 15". Perhaps I missed the signs and I could live with that, but the way I was treated by the sales people when I asked (politely) if I could return the ornaments was inexcusable. If you are the manager or the owner of this establishment I highly recommend that you find those people a job in the back of the store. Their attitude will hurt your business. I won't be shopping at your store again and I'll let others know about my experience. read more

I went in because my interior designer recommended their shop for some pieces that I may like in my renovation. They have lovely merchandise and the prices are reasonable but I walked through the entire store without getting an acknowledgement from the sales staff. I'm talking, they walked right by me, didn't make eye contact, say hello much less may I help you. They were falling all over some lady that was purchasing a bedspread but I guess since I stepped in after attending my yoga class and didn't look like I walked out of Neiman's that they decided I was not worth the effort. I am in with this store! So many beautiful things and I've been shopping here for years. The selection is above par with new merchandise arriving all the time. I've never had a negative experience with the ladies in fact the staff is always helpful and provides suggestions that I would not have thought of. I stopped in the store this afternoon looking for something to display some glass spheres on. I found the perfect thing in the exact right color. As soon as I picked it up, a lovely woman offered to take it to the register for me. I continued to look around and found a candle that I wanted to purchase. She popped right back and took this to the register as well. After looking around a bit more I headed to the register to make my purchase. As I was checking out another employee walked up and was on the phone. She said,"He's buying a candle and a display tray." I looked at her with some confusion. Turns out the person she was talking to was the owner. She instructed the clerk to give me my items at no charge. Just because! What a generous thing to do. This would have been a $50 sale for her but she chose to give it to me. This is what customer service is all about. I will most definitely keep them in mind when looking for things for my home and I will tell anyone who is looking for home furnishings to check them out. Thanks, y'all. read more

I love this store and happen to frequent it quite a bit. In fact, I was in the store when the person who wrote the previous negative and absolutely unnecessary comment was written (referring to the one posted on December 30). I personally found this comment to be inaccurate to the situation I witnessed. You were abrupt and rude to the sales person, who I believe was being fair in such a shocking situation. I have never encountered such behavior, and find no problem with back home's customer service. Again, I love this store and highly recommend it!! I have shopped Back Home for years. First in the little shop at the mall and past years in the WestGate location. They always have the best scented candles, lovely faux floral arrangements and wreaths. You walk in the store and its full of the sweetest French inspired vignettes. The furniture is very good quality. I have carpets and lamps as well as lots of baskets and faux flowers I've purchased here that are still like new. Good quality merchandise. I get so many decorating ideas from here. I live in Maine, but visit here when I come to Austin every winter. I highly recommend it for the merchandise as well as the courteous and knowledgable staff. I was there today and it was amazing as always. read more
