Our family of four stopped here on a recent road trip. The decor is very Route 66 highway. The service was great! They even got my husband's Arnold Palmer just right. We had burgers, brisket and the chicken fingers. All of the food was fresh and delicious. Great variety of BBQ sauces. read more

We come to this restaurant about once every few weeks. It's always delicious. Our favorites are the smoked buffalo wings, ribs, and chicken tenders. Very tasty! Came here for lunch and enjoyed everything. The beer menu was reasonably diverse, although the restaurant was out of the Sun King seasonal :( We were served cheddar biscuits and apple butter for our free table bread - pretty darn delicious! For my meal, I got the smoked beef brisket sandwich with corn pudding, and everything tasted good. The sandwich was not the absolute best I've ever had but it wasn't bad at all, and I liked the BBQ sauces available on the side (kind of necessary since the sandwich would have been a bit dry otherwise). Came here as a pitstop into Indianapolis and was seated immediately with no wait. I tried the Backroads combo with pulled pork and beef brisket. Both tasted pretty good but could've been a little more moist. There were different sauces at the table to add to your food so that was nice. Also had an order of macaroni and cheese which was also just average. Nothing in particular that would pull me back here but the experience wasn't bad. read more

Delicious! I stopped in while traveling through on I-65 and was not disappointed. Easy access from the highway and friendly service.

It was our first experience at this restaurant and they brought out the lunch chicken and it was not cooked properly. It was bloody and when we told the waitress about the issue, she told her manager whom did nothing and didn't even come over to speak with us. Another great meal! I had the smoked pulled pork entree with Mac and cheese and the ranch potato salad. I loved the potato salad and the Mac n cheese was good but it's not the same recipe as the last time we came. Overall I really enjoyed my meal. Oh! We were hotly anticipating the ribs here but were disappointed to find out they were out when we dined in. I chose the burnt ends as an alternative and while they were good, they just made me want to try the ribs even more as I know they would have been better. BBQ sauce was sweet and tangy. Nachos were the star of this dinner and the green beans were delicious also. Service was excellent. We were meeting near Lebanon, IN to meeting up with our grandkids parents, as they spent the week with us. Backroads had some good reviews and was close to the interstate as well. We arrived a bit ahead of parents so we got seated and started preliminaries, such as drinks, appetizers. Tim was our server and took prompt care of us from seating to getting us ready for a meal. Our grandson asked for a mountain dew and lemonade mixed 3/5 lemonade and 2/5 mountain dew. Tim was so impressed with the mixture request. He returned with his drink and said all the backroom staff was test tasting it and they liked it, so they were going to name it the LIAM. Tim was just totally exceptional with his service. One of the reviews may have referenced him (we believe) as the best and it had to him because it was 5 star service the whole way. The kids parents arrived and so waited for them to order. We ended up with Mountain Southern Pulled Pork Sandwich, Kids cheeseburger, 2 smoked pulled pork sandwich, Southern Pulled Pork Sandwich. There was still plenty leftover to take home for good time snack. Tim, was wonderful, kind and attentive and took great care of the kids in conversation. Another bbq place that just over cooks everything. The ribs were so dry the meat fell off the bone when picked up - that's not what they call "fall off the bone good". They had zero flavor. The brisket could have been trimmed better, had a lot of fat. Another had the pulled pork they said was good. Waitress was nice .I ordered a Smokehouse salad at 9.50 and was expecting a wonderful blend of greens and heaps of Charred corn Salsa and other veggies, but I was given Romaine lettuce and had to search for the corn. Maybe I should not order salad in a BBQ place but I was very underwhelmed my companion said his BBQ was fine . Our food was amazing!!!!! I had the pork and my fiancé had the brisket! I have never, and I mean never, had better pork or brisket. It was out of this world! Trust me..I like to eat. Their biscuits are marvelous. We sat at the bar and our server was amazing! The butter cake..holy smokes...I could have ate like three of them. Get it!!! Oh and the fries were probably some of the best I have ever had. They were seasoned perfectly. Trust me, I like carbs. I only have a couple of complaints and they aren't that huge.. 1) The corn pudding, or as we all call it, corn casserole, had some weird stuff in it. I didn't know that, and hated it, so he let me sub Mac and cheese. And it was bland. Didn't eat either but hey, can't win them all. 2) No cider. I don't drink beer, so they lost out on $6-$8 off of that alone. When our server realized that, he said he would tell the management because so many people have been asking for it. Fantastic food and great portion sizes! We tried so many amazing foods! For appetizers, we got the smoked salmon dip and Texas red chili. Seriously AMAZING! Never would've thought there'd be smoked salmon dip at a barbecue place, but it may have been my favorite thing I ate tonight! My husband loved the chili! If you like your chili spicy, this is for you! We both got the backroads combo. You pick 2 out of 4 meat options. With the both of us, we were able to try all 4 options - smoked turkey, turkey sausage, pulled pork, and brisket. All had a great Smokey flavor and it wasn't dry at all! Usually turkey is a no go for me, but it was surprisingly tasty and NOT dry at all! So many side options! We got the mac & cheese, skillet potatoes, and corn pudding. It was ALL yummy! No complaints from us! Husband tried a few of their drinks (sorry, forgot the pics). 65 old fashioned and Maker's Manhattan. Makers is his cup of tea, so he was very pleased with their selection. The "Whiskey Barn" is a very cool bar addition built in the restaurant. It's a nice place to stop by for a drink after work or grab dinner! For being opening week, the service was better than we expected. We will definitely be back! We were in the area for business and my colleagues and I stopped for a Thursday evening dinner. They have a Great name, a nice dining room and we were excited. This place, however, has horrible BBQ. Their ribs are clearly par boiled, lack flavor and have no evidence of a smoke ring. The brisket is also equally bad. On a positive note the beer was cold, the onion rings were tasty and the pork nachos tasted good. It's rare that I give places a "1" star rating, but in this case I feel that I am completely honest and upfront. I've actually taken a couple of days to think and review what I was going to write, so to know that it's not out of emotion. First off, as I have said before, I am from Texas, and that being said, my opinion of BBQ is pretty darn high. My wife (not being from The Lone Star State), has called me "A BBQ Nazi". Now that that has been established, it's time for me to get back on track and get this review going. Backroads BBQ is located in Lebanon, Indiana with a second opening right up the road in Lafayette. Their Facebook page says: "We take a unique twist on Texas-style barbecue and traditional southern comfort food." So after reading this, I was curious. "Texas style", "unique twist"....hmmm.... So I made the journey. The building is pretty large, and is evidently a nice locals place, but also close enough off the freeway for people to take a side jaunt to and grab some food. Good signage so I knew where I was. The parking lot was work gravel and the mudholes were large and common, but we had had a lot of rain up here, so I can't blame them. I walked carefully into the restaurant. The restaurant is laid out in a nice style. Lots of booths and tables. The walls done in a cedar style / natural stained oak paneling with some pictures and beer signs on the wall, (the usual restaurant wall kitsch), as well as the obligatory flat screen TV mounted on a high perch, perpetually tuned to ESPN sports, and showing some college football game going on....(In Feb?)..... I walked in and the first hostess (I say "first" as this is a major cog in the story, so please pay attention), sees me and comes up to me. Hostess #1 (H1): "Hi! Welcome! Dining in, pick up, or take out?" Me: "Hi. I'll be taking out, but I need your help." H1: "Oh?" Me: "Yes. I've never been here before but I have seen it a lot. So this is my first time here, and I am interested in trying out your BBQ. Is there anything good or specific that you recommend?" H1: (Does a rolling eye glance off to the side) "Well to be honest, I really DON'T like BBQ." Me: "You don't like BBQ but you work at a BBQ place?" I found this odd as BBQ people usually work at the things they love and love at the things they work at, (Namely BBQ). H1: "No not really. But we DO have some pretty good desserts!" She was obviously very enthusiastic about that. Her dentist must be thrilled. Me: Thinking to myself, "Yeah, I go to BBQ places for dessert." but instead saying "Um...well I am really interested in BBQ, and when it comes to that I am gonna say the four words you don't wanna hear. "Miss, I'm from Texas."..." H1 looks at me and says "I'll be right back." She darts off to get another lady, (an older lady but very nice, so we shall called her Hostess #2, (H2) who comes in as backup). H2: "Hi hon, what can we get for you?" Me: "I'm interested in knowing what's good here...especially the BBQ." H2: "Do you like fish?" Me: "Um...especially the BBQ." H2: "Well tell me what you like." Me: "Ma'am, I'm from Texas." H2: "Oh...well I'm sorry but we don't have any BBQ chicken." WTF???? Me: "No ma'am...I'm thinking a good order of dry rub beef brisket, beef ribs, etc." H2: *Rapid blinking of the eyes.* H1: "What is dry rub?" Me: *Biting my tongue before asking* "Can I see a menu please? H2: Hands me a menu. I look it over and ask her to give me a few minutes. In the end I went with two combos: Combo 1 had pulled pork and the Texas smoked sausage with kettle chips, and baked beans. Combo 2 had the beef brisket and pulled pork with coleslaw and fries. I also ordered a "Large" sweet tea. Service was quick and efficient. However they had three holding containers full of their "sauce", (I had to ask which was which as there were no signs). They had sweet, "fire" and their sweet, spicy, mustard. I took two containers of the sweet. I got two combos: The first was their pulled pork and Texas smoked sausage with kettle chips and baked beans, and the second was their beef brisket and pulled pork with fries and coleslaw. My wife fixed us some sweet corn to add to it. The food leaves a lot to be desired. 1: The Texas smoked sausage tastes par-broiled, with hardly any smoke flavoring in it. 2: The pulled pork had literally no BBQ flavor. 3: The beef brisket portion was small and mostly fatty meat. It had a little more taste to it than the pork, but also seemed to be par-broiled. 4: The beans had a vinagery aftertaste. 5: Fries, kettle chips, and the coleslaw were very good. The "large" sweet tea was the size of a medium McDonalds cup, and I had it emptied in about six gulps. Maybe I caught it on a bad day, but the food wasn't that good, the BBQ selection wasn't that good, the portions were small, and I think they were relying more on their sauces for "Real BBQ flavor". Portions vs Price was not good. I "might" try this again in the future, but for right now, I am NOT impressed.. read more

An impulse stop when we were on a detour around Indianapolis--great find! We had the lunch pulled pork sandwich and lunch loaded mac and cheese.
