Can't quite get up to the 4 stars but it's high 3's for me.
Little roadside stand mainly attracting the local blue collar area workers. Seems to me a fan favorite is their loaded baked potatoes and their pulled pork sandwich (but I mean, when a BBQ joint is open for lunch on the roadside, that just is what people are going to get) Well I don't want to judge to harsh here due to the nature of what the business actually is for so take it with a grain of salt.
I didn't like that they don't have a meat combo, although I understand most people just need a good lunch, not a platter of meat. Didn't understand at first what the menu was saying when it lists the Brisket as " ... $10 / $20 Lbs" Apparently this means it's $10 for a regular order and $20 for a pound. $10 is a little steep for just some brisket. Kinda the same deal with their Ribs. You can either get a Half or a Full, No 1/3 No 1/4. I ask if they ever would, they said "Maybe when we get our store back" ... huh?
Anyways, Brisket: Looked awesome, juicy, great smell, great glaze look. Couldn't really see the rub, just a flat bark. Initial taste was smokey, salty, but fat wasn't melting right away. At least it did after a few seconds. But it didn't real melt, fat almost became a paste texture in the mouth. Then I started to notice the bad. The meat was a tiny bit tougher than I like, although probably many people would disagree. I was trying to get just a fork full of just meat so I could taste it but it was very difficult to. And what I thought was meat turned out to be a giant clump of fat. And then I discovered the all the flavor was coming from the salty seasoning. The meat and fat didn't really have much of a flavor at all. Not something I wanted to spend $10 on.
A half rack was the smallest I could get for Ribs, I don't really know why. He even offered to cut of the ribs so that was good. Ribs were ... unique I think, something about them. Juicy, 6-7" long, good amount of meat probably a country style, red rub on it but not sauce, greasy meat, typical good rib smell, greasy meat, tougher then I thought it was gonna be, more sweet than salty
but salty is there, definitely a good rib compared to most places I've been to, but the toughness is the thing that was killing it for me. Meat really looked like it would be softer. Again kind annoyed I had to spend $18 just on the Ribs. That's $28 just for Ribs and Brisket, now the 2 sides.
Mac and Cheese. Looked dry and I could see the different types of cheeses not completely melted. Really Good taste though. Just Macaroni and Just cheese, just the melted cheese no sauce. Stringy, Gritty, Clumpy pasta and melted Cheese. I don't know how they did it but they did.
Beans were brown beans, obvious big pieces of Jalapeno in them. Heat hit me harder than I thought it would. The Beans were pretty hot too but cooked perfectly. Sauce was outstanding but the jalapenos were taking away my taste buds a bit too much. Hard to taste the sauce after the jalapeno kick. Flakes of some kind of white fleshy thing, probably garlic, in the sauce but it was really good.
Sweet sauce was more liquidy than most places (good start), good taste, a little too sweet for me but still very very good, would help the ribs. Could taste the vinegar in the sauce but it wasn't as strong of an Apple Cider Vinegar, for some reason it was like a mild version. But really good though. read more
