We loved our experience here. We stopped in to meet with friends, but we just missed them. But we decided to stay and have dinner because we loved the vibe. The staff was amazing, very helpful with recommendations and even letting us try some samples before we decided on drinks. There was live music too, which was nice. I met a couple of friends here last weekend. The vibe was pretty awesome. The only thing I would say is when they started doing trivia it was extremely loud making it uncomfortable to have a decent conversation because you couldn't hear. After several tries (please note the business hours) we finally made it to Hops 44, and I was glad we did. The UConn students had dispersed for the summer and service was excellent. I can only imagine the sound level... They had a large collection of games by the door to keep you amused while consuming liquid and other refreshments. The beer selection was large and quite varied, and the barbecue selections most tempting. I got the three taco barbecue assortment (each one tastier than the last), son swiftly enveloped his cheeseburger and fries, and my wife enjoyed a pulled pork sandwich. My experiences with Hops 44 have been hit or miss. If you're looking for a relaxed, casual place to have some drinks and appetizers with friends, this is a great choice. However, if you're looking for a full meal, I might recommend going elsewhere. Prices for entrees are high for what you get, and I have found some menu items to be spectacular while others were mediocre. I have also found the service to be so-so, sometimes quick and thorough and other times very spotty. 1st time purchaser. Everything was good. The southwest chicken salad was exceptional due to size and amt of chicken. The piggy bowl contains 5 items and is delicious due to that complexity. The boneless chicken wings were flavorful but for a dollar a chunk, underwhelming. I would try the bone-in next time. The only real miss was salad dressing on the side for the Caesar salad. Out on the beer trail todays stop was Hops 44. I come to toast 4 corners all the time but I failed to notice that this was right next door. One of CT finest craft beers and award winning pub menu, although I was only here for beer.. I'll be back soon to try the food with an updated review. It's a great place to hang out... they have a wall fully stacked with fun games... You can level it up and your sure to have a great time. I tried a flight of lagers, Pilsner and pale ales. I liked all of them but my fav was the "Orange crusher" (American light lager) a refreshing drink with hints of fresh cirtus to beat the heat wave. The price point is kept low and reasonable considering it's a waterhole for UConn student crowd. They have indoor/ outdoor seating. Okay pretzels, okay wings. Nice location, but muted flavors UConn tends to be a bit crazy when school is in session. So we were looking for good food to try that was a little more off the beaten path. This place had some rave reviews, so we decided to give this place a go. The restaurant was moderately busy, had outdoor seating on a beautiful day. We got a smattering of their dining options: A Stuffed Pretzel, a Hops dog, Some of their famous wings, and some pretzel oreos. One thing that you learn quickly is this location loves it's wings and pretzels. It proudly announces that it's the runner-up from hartford magazine's "best wings" for two years running. So the bar was set high, as was the price point. They also had a good chunk of their menu dedicated to their pretzel offerings. So it seemed like this place would be able to put out very good pretzels and wings. They were not bad, but not great either. Very ho-hum. The hops dog hot dog was good, the pretzel was lacking the golden sheen and salt one would expect from this type of dog. We get a beer cheese sauce, which was lacking the beer and cheese flavor. The stuffed pretzel was more like a bread bowl with two pretzel tines across it. the flavors inside were good, if anything there was some gristly chicken bits and not that much bacon flavor. The wings were small, and the wings were sticky, sweet, and a pretty good barbeque sauce. However, any semblance of heat that the buffalo sauce provided was lost. Which is something the wings really needed: it needed spice. The pretzel oreos were sweet but very one note. I was hoping for a sweet and salty combo, maybe even some buttery notes. but they put both powered sugar and cocoa powder on top of them which made the experience much harder to enjoy. as a food location, it's not bad but not great either. It's fine if you're looking for a quick meal, but everything needed some seasoning and some minor execution tweaks to make everything tasty. read more

THE WINGS! I am telling you! You have to listen to me and order the wings at Hopps 44. Cooked to perfection and flavorful. I have to say I wish the wings had my sauce cooked into them because that's my jam. But overall a good wing here and I dipped into my Carolina mustard sauce. The winning move here- I mixed the Carolina and blue cheese for an amazing flavor! Upon walking in we were seated immediately but not before both my kids were able to pick out little plastic animal finger puppets (nice touch!) As this is not a brewery they have a great selection of craft beer's. They even have TV screens with the menu listed and people can log into Untappd and your check ins will appear on the screen. I had a frozen drink mix of pina colada and a strawberry daquiri which the waitress informed me was called a Miami Vice. It was strong! But also came decorated with a pink flamingo straw. Love it! We stopped by for a quick bite as we were dropping my son off at college. This place or pub (I guess) is insanely huge. It it surrounded with TV's, games and so on... it definitely has its own vibe and the coolest thing is they have their own name for their drafts- and the names pretty inventive. My son had a chicken BLT, I had a chicken BLT as well but modified: GF bun and I substituted the mayonnaise for pesto (it was delicious). My husband had a Philly steak & cheese with mushrooms (no peppers) and he said it was ok. No french fries served, everything came with chips but they were really good. Our waiter was pleasant but a bit inattentive especially since there was only a handful of people there at the time we went. Will be back to try other foods again. read more

Time is the most valuable thing in our lives and unfortunately Hops 44 will take a lot of it. We've been now twice and unfortunately I don't think we'll be going back. We were sat as soon as we came into the half full restaurant. We waited about 10 minutes before our server made their way over to greet us and take our drink orders. After receiving our drinks we waited about 20 minutes before being asked if we were ready to order. The single appetizer arrived 15 minutes later then the food came out an additional 20 minutes later. I should say, half our food came out. It was another 5 before the rest of my family had their food. As we ate our waitress aimlessly patrolled the dining room and bar. At no point were we checked on during our visit of over 90 minutes. After eating we waited and waited for our check and boxes. I sat outstretched to give some signal that we were done eating only to be looked at and walked past. Finally when I began stacking trays and cups did someone else inquire if we needed anything. They seemed very attentive and would have made for a nice experience. The food each time was excellent which is a shame. It's a unique menu that has a lot going for it. If you're going to spend an afternoon watching games there, go for it. If you're looking to have a meal and move on, find somewhere else. Two other items of note: they close at 7pm on Sundays. I watched the waitress turn away customers because they were no longer seating people. It's a shame that they had to turn away business in a tip driven profession at such an early hour. When we left, there was an SUV with a vanity plate reflecting their affiliation with the restaurant parked in an unmarked spot directly in front of the stairs leading to the parking lot which we had to navigate by to get to our car. Then today, we saw they have a trailer for events - cool! It was parked in an ADA spot with another vehicle parked at an angle, seemingly blocking it in to prevent theft, taking up a second ADA spot - not cool! I hope there are some significant changes to how this restaurant is run. I don't feel like a guest but a customer. The price of everything now is so high that when I'm going somewhere it's an investment in an experience. I'll invest elsewhere. read more

Hops 44 is a stable in my household. We typically come here at least once a month, but typically more than that. Take out and eating in are both great options here. I have gotten many things off this menu and I have never been disappointed. I love their baked beans and mac and cheese so we always order a side of those if our meal doesn't come with it. They are also dog friendly and have a special dog menu which my dog loves. For take out, they are typically pretty quick and the food is steaming hot when you pick it up. 10/10 recommend this place. My family came here for dinner on a Friday to try it out after hearing good things. The place was very big and had outside seating as well. It was fun inside, there were games and tvs, and the wait staff was all friendly. The menu was big with what I'd call elevated bar food. Everything was good, I got the taco sampler and liked the pork and brisket tacos. I'll say that the chicken one was pretty dry, but there was dipping sauce on the side which helped. This is an interesting place. They take reservations yet when you walk in it doesn't strike you as a place that takes reservations. It is more of a festive laid-back environment. They take Halloween seriously too because there are tombstones in the front and more decor inside. And there is a rack full of board games of yesteryear (do people play these?) and a guy was singing his rendition of yesteryear's greatest hits. The food? Well, I thought you'd never ask. It was a'aight. The apple cider and garlic pepper wings were both a pleasant and flavorful delight. The bourbon lemonade was good too. The hand cut fries were ok but not special, and I would have to say the same for the Nashville chicken sandwich. I hadn't really been to any restaurants in the Storrs area until going to Hops 44, and my expectations were exceeded! It was clear to see why they were recognized as having the second best wings in the state, and the elote dip, bacon, and margarita flight were all fantastic. Our waitress and the owner were both so friendly, and we loved the vibe of the restaurant! If you're a UCONN student, you're lucky to be near such a great place. Things were going well until my son pulled out a piece of plastic from his mouth. We understand mistakes happen in the kitchen. The manager came over, apologized, and comped the meal. She offered something else but my son didn't want it because he was coughing up and feeling sick from the food. I put thumbs down on the toast tab rating for food because OBVIOUSLY. The manager came over and bitched about the negative toast tab review while highlighting that she comped the meal. Of course you're gonna comp a meal with plastic in it- GTFOH. I don't know, I am a simple person, you know. You talk to me nicely and I get impressed, even if the food is okay or the beers are simply okay. But Meh, I wasn't impressed. Maybe I am just not their target market, but something just didn't feel right; almost unwelcoming. I have been there, here and there for the past 3 years, but honestly always felt a weird vibe. Also, we once sent an email to ask about hosting an event there and received an almost indifferent reply. And that indifference is clearly visible in how I often feel when I am there. Especially one of the Individuals on the wait staff (a tall guy with glasses), does weird things, like specifically excluding certain people in a group when taking orders. Maybe it's the scene for some locals, but not my thing. I know that every business around here tries to use the UConn name to generate some goodwill, but this is not a student bar, this is a bar for locals (that's the vibe), for the UConn vibe go to Huskies, or Ted's, where bartenders are friendly, and open-minded college students. read more

Seriously enjoyed our first time at Hops 44 tonight for date night. Beer selection .... Fantastic! I had the Sour Crusher Pineapple from Skygazer and Suckr Punchd sour from Alvarium. Both were great but the pineapple was amazing! Sours are my favorite. I could've sipped on that all day. My husband got the double scoop IPA from back east. A little sweet for him but I liked it. And he, who doesn't like sours loved my pineapple sour and ordered himself one too! I loved that so many local breweries were represented. The beer was perfectly cold and served correctly. Service: good. Drinks were ordered right away but took someone a long time to ask us for our food order. Others who say after us were ordering. But it was a case of not knowing who was taking us because they very much follow a team approach there where everyone sort of checks on the everyone which I do like ... and when our ordered was taken our waitress was apologetic for the wait. No harm no foul for us because we were busy enjoying our beers and the decor. Food: YUM. The sweet Thai fried cauliflower is one of the best things I've ever eating. I could eat plates of that. We also had the smashed potato flat bread, the bbq chicken pretzel, and the loaded tots ... all were very good! So many delicious sound items on the menu. Even though we didn't need them we were able to make reservations online ahead of time which I always really appreciate and enjoy. Can't wait to go back! Can't say enough good things about the staff at Hops 44! It was a packed house when we arrived, due to the popular UCONN Rock Ensemble performing. The staff moved heaven and earth to make sure everyone had a seat, and they did so with pleasant, patient, and attentive service. We moved here in January 2020, three months before the world shut down. We would drive by lawn signs supporting @hops44 and once their doors reopened, we went. We are ALWAYS searching for excellent wings and of course we ordered their wings. I had also never tried a pretzel flatbread pizza so that's what I ordered. First, how original! Second-wow! Just wow! The wings melted off the bones and the taste was like no other I had tried. The smashed flatbread was and is heavenly! Since then, we have been there every week and have gotten to know their staff. I threw my son a surprise 21st Bday party recently for he and his friends. The food was awesome as usual and several of our guests who hadn't been to Hops44 commented on how much they enjoyed it too! We had the buffet-Taco bar, wings, flatbreads the Porkopolis was the best! The waitstaff was very attentive, keeping the drinks full and kept the area tidy. Nancy, the manager was very easy to work with; I definitely appreciated her meal suggestions, timing and organization. I highly recommend Hops44 for your next gathering or casual lunch or dinner. First off, I really want this place to succeed. Storrs needs a fun, laid back pub where you can go hang out with your family or friends and play some games or just relax. That said- here's what Hop Knot gets right: 1) a concerted effort to offer local beer. The vast majority of beer and ciders offered are either from Connecticut specifically or New England in general. We are lucky to have such great local breweries and Hop Knot does right in showcasing them. 2) The atmosphere is headed in the right direction. More seating would help make the place feel cozier (right now it feels a little sparse) and wouldn't compromise the experience 3) Offering board games and trivia nights is great. We played Mad Gab and had a blast. 4) Groups with kids and groups without kids would be equally welcome and comfortable Now for the cons, and if these cons aren't addressed soon, Storrs will lose a hangout with such potential. 1) The online presence is weird and amateur. The beer list- arguably the main draw- is only available online if you have an untapped account. Why make people jump through an extra hoop to see what you're serving? The pictures of food on the menu do not show the dishes off to their best potential and verge on depressing looking. 2) The vibe upon arrival is also weird. We were instructed via a sign to seat ourselves, and then, after 5-10 minutes of sitting, began to wonder if this was a self serve type deal, and did we have to go to the bar ourselves to place an order? Eventually a server did show up, but despite the fact that the bar was not crowded by any means, service was very very slow and the food took an shockingly long time to arrive (when the menu tells customers to routinely expect 30-40 minutes for pretzels, take this as a giant red flag). 3) The food. While Hop Knot gets the Hop part right, it fails spectacularly at the Knot part. These were the worst pretzels I have ever eaten. We tried three different stuffed pretzels, and every one was bland, flavorless, and depressing. The pretzels themselves do not have pretzel color, taste, or texture, and are instead just thick doughy breadsticks. The tomatoes in the caprese pretzel were the most tasteless tomatoes I have ever had. And I'm writing this as a New Englander who has had my fair share of imported winter tomatoes. The pesto was high on oil, low on basil and zeroed out on taste. The mustard for the spicy mustard dip was just Guldens - not even a halfhearted attempt made in the kitchen to make it unique. The beer cheese was grainy and bland. The spinach artichoke dip was just as tasteless as everything else. Tl;dr- Storrs needs this place, but the establishment isn't going to survive if it doesn't do a massive overhaul of its food. read more
