First, this is not a brewery. They do not brew beer here. It is a bar. Oddly, Friday night at 8pm and only one other small group in bar. Apparently with school out, a large audience for the bar wasn't in town. I tried the burnt Orange IPA which was good. We sat at the bar and thought we could watch the Pacer NBA game but no local sports channels available. Was hoping for a nice quaint local brewery. Not what we found but if you are looking for a bar, this works. Loved the exposed brick interior. read more

Great location right downtown... with a fire department theme loving the woodwork thru out the building. Looking on the walls you will see different things dealing with fire fighting. I found the service to be outstanding we got there the door was locked they had just switched to the fall hours but yet the Bartender was sweet enough to open for us and serve us. read more

We have visited Backstep a few times since we moved into town. This cute bar has a lot to offer including a variety of taps from various breweries, a handful of their own beers, a full bar, as well as burgers and Philly cheesesteaks. We have visited 3-4 times and always go in when Shelby is working. Unfortunately she only works Saturdays once in awhile, which is the only day we are able to come in so we wait until she is behind the bar to go in. We have tried multiple food items including the fried mushrooms with ranch, potato wedges with nacho cheese, the smash burger and the Philly cheesesteak. I assume their mushrooms and wedges are frozen but they are a good snack. You are also able to get a growler fill to take home (my only complaint is that you are only allowed to take home their house beers). The bathrooms are always clean, and there are a variety of board games in the back you can take to your table. We have seen several posts about trivia and bingo but unfortunately these events are not on Saturdays so we can not attend. read more

First trip to the Outdoor Beer Garden and sampling the Test Kitchen tonight. The Veggie Burger (scratch-made) was awesome. The bun was a bit much, but still amazing. Had to test the fries as well as the jalapeno cornbread and both would have been a perfect app with a beer by themselves. Did I say beer?!... The new PJ McGuire Hazy/DIPA was spot-on! The mushroom and Swiss burger was literally the best thing I've ever eaten. A cool place with many different beer options.

The service was great and there's a nice variety of craft beers. I tried several of their beers and liked them all. I heard the bloody mary bar was great, although I didn't try one. I really liked the setup in general and will definitely stop back in next time I am in the area! read more

I am so excited to finally try this Crawfordsville brewery! And I am happy to say that it was worth the wait. The atmosphere of the brewery is lovely and warm -- gorgeous brick walls and a friendly air between the employees and all of the guests. I started out with the Downeast cider, which was really good! They actually have a great selection of cider (as well as a full bar), which I really appreciate since I'm not a huge fan of beer. I love a brewery that has options for everyone! With it being Friday, I decided to try their weekly poutine -- pulled pork poutine with mozzarella and gravy. It was so good! The fries were absolutely perfect. The service was great! The bartenders were friendly and attentive. My only complaint would be that 2 of the 3 bartenders spent a lot of time with their masks off, often pulling their masks down to speak to me/other customers... I wish I hadn't been sitting at the bar because it made me uncomfortable that we were in such close proximity without them wearing masks. I think that if they adhered strictly to COVID precautions, that would make them even better! read more

I stopped in after a day of hiking and really enjoyed the refreshing taste of a flight of house beers. There were several that had strawberry (a strawberry and lemon IPA) and a Pale Ale. I thought the IPA had a nice balance of hops and lemon, but the strawberry wasn't as balanced. For the pale ale, the flavor was much more noticeable. I also had a Saison that had enough fruit and herbs that it reminded me of a Hefe. Definitely delicious. I finished off with an oatmeal stout. Good flavor. I tend to like eating meat when sipping a stout to complement the flavors. All I had was a bowl of free popcorn (a bit on the salty side) since I didn't see any food listed on the menu until the scrolling electronic one displayed some options. Oh, well! We were exploring the area and stopped in for a beer and an appetizer. We were greeted with a sign on the entrance saying "no outside food allowed" and were given a food menu. This would surely imply that food is available. Nope. When we ordered food, the bartender told us the kitchen was closed for another hour. Why be open, hand out food menus, and not allow outside food if you aren't serving food? That being said, the Florian IPA was great. read more

Really a nice bar, great drinking spot you wouldn't think was in C'Ville but is. Bartenders friendly and know the many craft beers on offer. Good selection from Indiana and other parts of the Midwest. Rotating selections offer variety. Feel of the bar, refurbished old commercial, is excellent. TV is understated, and people actually show up to talk. If you come alone, you will typically find company. Plenty of middle aged, educated customers, hence an inviting and cool atmosphere. read more

I have been impatiently awaiting Backstep Brewing Company's opening for months! The wait was not in vain! I have not seen an opening like this for a Crawfordsville place in a long time. The place was packed all weekend! Literally standing room only. The back of the brewery has a couch and a few picnic tables. The front has a long bar and a few four-top tables. They have 36 beers on tap and a full service bar. You can find their beer list on Untapped. They do not currently have food, but encourage patrons to bring in food or have food delivered. It's a genius plan...serve tons of beer without the cost (and headache) of also doing food. Backstep is waiting for approval for their brewing license to brew their own beer. I can't wait to try their local brews. If opening weekend is any indication, Backstep Brewing Company is going to be an extremely successful local establishment! read more

Ok, Backstep got even better, if that's indeed possible. And yet it is, because the owners have taken it to the next level since Backstep is now selling its very own in-house brewed beers. Which are amazing. Like really amazing. Like I'm not just saying this because I'm so thrilled to have a brewpub in our town amazing. We were lucky enough to go to the official first keg tapping release party, and it was fantastic, packed elbow to elbow with happy throngs of beer drinking people. One of the owners brought in the ceremonial first keg, preceded by an Irish bagpipe player, which was a really nice touch. The cheers and love in the place were palpable. Everyone was so jazzed to try local microbrews, and they did not disappoint. The two IPAS were great--very rich, hoppy, and intensely citrusy with lingering beautifully bitter afternotes that would pair so well with a burger and fries. The pale ales were top notch--unobtrusive but flavorful and complex. The stouts had rich coffee notes but with a full palate that would pair excellently with brownies, cheesecake, or a Guinness beef stew. I even liked the fruit themed beers, which I'm usually not a fan of. But the reason why Backstep's were so good was because you weren't overpowered by a fake fruit flavor, but instead were subtly reminded of a fruit flavor (guava, papaya, etc) that was present in the nose and the front of the palate, but not overwhelmingly so. These guys are doing it right, hitting all the notes, and playing beautiful music. Here's to many many (I hope!) years of going to Backstep, our new local pub. Ok was back in Crawfordsville for my college reunion. Once dinner ended we found out about this place my the staff who was dinning with us. I was immediately impressed when I entered. Interior was great very nice but still preserved a nice but old look to it. Plenty of staff to get you beer. They of course serve several of their own brews as well as an extensive list of others. The bar was very busy on Saturday night and was pretty full so if there are several of you. You might want to get there by 10. My beer tasted great it was Sun King Pacahnga. Which is a good one. They had a few sun kings. One Three floyds. But they also have staples like PBR in a can. I was talking to my friend before going back to Indy so I had to limit my drinks to one unfortunately. They do have munchies as well but I didn't get any as we had eaten shortly before ariving. I will definitely be back when in town. read more

A must stop if you are visiting Wabash College or Crawfordsville, this brewery is definitely any up-and-comer. With around 25 taps, Backstep offers a variety of local and Indiana craft brews. This place is the best. I love their variety of beers, and how it's always changing. My friend prefers cocktails and they offer those too. You're allowed to bring any food in from anywhere you want, even stuff from home, they don't care. It's a super chill place. Everyone who works there is so nice! I have one suggestion though, a throwback record night. Like all hits from the 70s, that would make for a fun night. read more

Backstep is an awesome local tap house with its own brews available on tap. It's a clean environment and there are plenty of food options as they allow you to carry in or have food delivered to you while you drink! This bar is a great place to spend the evening if you're looking for a great, laid back atmosphere with little to no drama. The staff doesn't put up with much, which is nice. Awesome location-this is what Crawfordsville has been needing!! They have done a great job renovating the historic building while maintaining the integrity and charm of its years. Great color scheme and cozy! Backstep has an amazing beer selection that the staff know about in detail! My hometown of Crawfordsville was severely lacking in the microbrewery scene until Backstep showed up. Anything else is a dive bar or a sports bar with dark lighting and a louder atmosphere. Backstep has a clean, well-lighted location with beautiful brick walls and a classic, traditional wooden bar. They have craft brews from all around the midwest as well as a slew of their own brews at a reasonable price. The bartenders are friendly and talkative. I also love the separate area with tables for board games. They've done a great job making it a comfortable place for conversation and relaxation for people of all ages. Please keep this place open! This place will attract more young professionals to Crawfordsville in particular! read more

They aren't afraid to experiment with their house brews (they currently have a prickly pear IPA and a key lime weisse) and have an impressive selection of other beers.
