Haven't been back here in years. I recall that we stopped going to the Backwoods Inn because it was too "hit or miss"with the food quality. Decided to give them a try for dinner tonight (Saturday, 6/20) and the food was very good. Started off with the garlic toast which was nice and garlicky without being overpowering. Nice crunch and toastiness as it was on sourdough; the sourdough tang and garlic butter was a great match. Kiddo ordered the Alfredo with chicken. Great portion size, plenty of grilled chicken, and sourdough toast. Evidently it was good as the leftovers were boxed up and taken home and this kid almost never takes leftovers. Wife had the ribeye (medium rare - it was cooked perfectly) and the twice baked potato. I ordered the porterhouse medium rare (also cooked perfectly) with the twice baked potato. Love twice baked potato and they did a good job with them here. Both steaks were very good and the hint of mesquite was again spot on without being overpowering. All of us choose to go with the salad versus soup (clam chowder or soup of the day - corn chowder) which was fine. Nothing great, it was a salad. Typical lettuce, grated carrot, sliced cucumber, grape tomatoes with dressing (kiddo and I chose ranch whereas the wife has raspberry vinaigrette). The salads do come dressed so if you want to control the dressing, you have to ask for it on the side. My only complaint is that I forgot the steaks don't come seasoned. It is explicitly stated on the menu. If you want the steaks seasoned, you have to ask. I forgot. You can season with the salt and pepper shakers on the table but the salt doesn't penetrate the meat. That's my fault as I knew and forgot to ask for my steak to be seasoned. So no deductions for my mistake. No, they do not have Maldon's flaky salt. Again, unlike a higher class steak house where everything is a la carte, the steaks come with a potato (your choice of how you want it prepared), and choice of soup or salad. For what I may have paid for just myself at an upscale steakhouse, I paid for three albeit my child didn't order a steak. Before you criticize me and say that the quality of steak doesn't compare to a high end streak house, I agree. It simply does not. However, the quality of steaks for the price point of the meal punched above it's weight class tonight. It was a definite hit so I'm hoping to out this place back in our restaurant rotation for viable places to dine out. read more

Still enjoying our occasional visit to Blackwoods Inn. Classic Old School steak house. Mesquite grilled steak, ribs and pork chops. A variety of shell fish, broasted chicken and more. Sides include choice of potato, the stuffed potatoes are my favorite, soup or salad. Many peeps order the clam chowder but I always get the salad as it is crisp, fresh and the best ranch or blue cheese dressing. Leslie was our excellent server tonight. I didn't catch her assistant's name but he was awesome as well. We ordered two prime rib dinners and added on the fried shrimp and asked her to serve the shrimp as our appetizer. The add on fried shrimp plate comes with three large butterflied shrimp lightly battered and crisp. Don't forget to say hi to the grill masters when you first walk in the door. Even though they are hard at work, they always look up to greet customers as they walk in. Backwoods is a dinner only restaurant opens at 4, closed on Tuesdays. They take reservations for parties of 8 or more. Great place for Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve or any special occasion. The steaks were code to perfection, and the broasted chicken was delicious. Well worth the wait. Only criticism is that the mushroom appetizer was odd. Service was awesome! Our waitress was amazing! - except one busboy who brought water to the table (way too much cologne on) literally grossed me out! Too strong to be worn as a server or busboy. This was my first visit- my brother raved about the homemade salad dressing- it was ok! Not the greatest! I ordered grilled chicken and it was dry - the sauces on the side were teriyaki (too watery and too salty) and the bbq sauce tasted like Hines 57. Nothing special! We have eaten here many times over the years, and it has never disappointed. It is a truly old school steakhouse with the giant booths and dimmer lighting. Our service was top notch as usual, and the bus boy was a young man that really hustled and kept our glasses full. Our steaks were perfectly cooked as were our sides. They use mesquite wood when cooking their steaks and they consider that the seasoning. I like a little more seasoning so make sure to order your steak "seasoned" so they add the extra seasoning. We've lived in Santa Clarita for about 20 years and always heard about it, so we finally went to celebrate our dating anniversary (yes, we still do that even though we're married). If you want an old school steakhouse vibe, this is it. Red leather booths, stained-glass style lamps, cozy lighting, vintage decor, and those classic "newspaper" tablecloths. It feels like a time capsule in the best way. Service was genuinely great, friendly, attentive, and paced perfectly for a celebratory dinner. Food quality was solid across the board. With each meal you get the classic steakhouse setup: soup or salad plus a twice-baked potato, and everything came out hot and exactly how we asked. They also have a handful of house wines that are surprisingly inexpensive and totally drinkable. You can obviously go pricier if you want, but it was nice having a simple, budget-friendly option that still worked with a steak dinner. Is it the best steak you'll ever have? No. But that's not the point here. It's a dependable, classic steakhouse with a fun throwback atmosphere, great service, and a meal that feels like a complete dinner. THiS is the Santa Clarita I remember from the 1970s! Unbelievable menu. Yes it was Thanksgiving and you needed to be here when they opened at 5pm. Sometimes yelp ratings are way off, this place is superb - a rare gem of a restaurant from another era that you just don't find anymore! It's so comfortable inside, booths everywhere with clever and beautiful breaks in the restaurant using wood and stained glass and great stained glass lamps. The food is classic American and delicious. My daughter ordered her small filet mignon RARE and it came out perfect. They err on the side of over-cooking. When it doubt try RARE instead of Medium-Rare you'll be happy you did! The twice baked potato was the shocking stand-out - we have never had anything like that, she had added cheese and it was baked in. As someone who truly dislikes mashed and baked potatoes - this was outstanding. My bone in rib eye was excellent but over cooked, next time I will do rare as well. House Pinot noir was excellent and paired well, but I don't know what vineyard or vintage. Finally the crème brûlée was perfectly sized and unbelievable. We will return. We met some friends for dinner here last night and had a very nice time. We started with an order of their garlic bread, which was very good. Our friends ordered the full order of baby back ribs to share and so did my wife and I. It was plenty to share, and we each took home several ribs. Our waiter was Anthony, who was exceptional, and the busser was Jordan, who was also exceptional. Unfortunately, the manager told us that she was leaving to go to college. We've been going here since I moved to Santa Clarita in 1975 and are glad that they are still serving great food. read more

Love backwoods inn for an old school steakhouse vibe without any frills. It's nice to have a slightly casual option where an 18oz ribeye is under $50 and not $120. Plus they include one side with each entree so again, the value here is top notch. Don't you just hate going to a steakhouse where you pay $80 for a steak and still have to order $15 potatoes?! You don't have to do that here. I also love that the menu has great variety at all different price points; I can't wait to try the broasted chicken and beef ribs! Apparently they are super popular for their fried chicken! I can never stay away from the prime rib though because it's so good usually, so I have to commit to trying something different next time. I was sad after our most recent visit because the prime rib was way overdone; I asked for medium rare, I got a well done piece with zero pink. Other than that our meals are always outstanding. Clam chowder is the best and I love that each entree includes a cup of it (their cup is more like a bowl btw, another win!). The clam chowder has no bacon in it which is a plus for my husband who doesn't eat pork. My son loved their salad with ranch dressing. He mostly focused on the salad bc the dressing was so good to him! Service is outstanding and personal: love the servers here and they really try their best to make sure you have a good time. Our party of five all got different kinds of steak along with their double baked potato with cheese. Definitely a good choice very smooth and creamy and tasty steaks for a big portion. My family used to eat here at least monthly. Great steaks, crab louie salad, etc. They were closed for a while, as many were after Covid hit. Yesterday, my sister and I ate an early dinner (they're no longer open for lunch) at around 5pm. We waited about 10 minutes, as it was crowded with some large parties and although there were tables, the staff was over extended. We each ordered the shrimp louie salad and asked the chef to add crab (no longer on the menu), cheese toast and twice baked potatoes. I forgot to photo the potatoes before we had dug in to cool them off. They look messy and unappealing then. The potatoes were delicious and made a great lunch the next day. The toast was different from what we remembered, but still tasty. Very greasy though. The photo only shows half of the toast, as we ate it immediately upon delivery. The salad, our main course, was a huge disappointment. The crab was clearly BAD. We each tasted it before we smelled it. My sister ate more and got food poisoning. The shrimp was good sized and mine was good. My sister's was not cleaned and still had the very unappealing strings in it. The blue cheese was delicious, which made our bowl of lettuce fine.
