Flat iron steak sandwich and the chicken breast with lemon cream sauce, mashed potatoes, and asparagus

Never a bad experience here. You can tell they have had to make some hard decisions to stay open. Come support and don't listen to the losers who find any reason to complain. best steak sandwich and the quality has not suffered given their hardships.

Service was fast I got the caper salmon and it was really good. Chips and salsa were good too. I'll come back to try the happy hour.

Had the roast beef sandwich and it was really good with plenty of pickles and generous amount of beef! I also had their steak nachos from the happy hour special and they were also very good. Look forward to coming here again!

Unbelievably delicious steamed clams.

We used to go to this restaurant back when it first opened... The patio was incredibly welcoming and was perfect for multiple families with rambunctious kids. It was a regular stop for us with our group of friends. Well, kids grow up and friends grow apart and you don't necessarily go out to eat with the same people as much as you used to, and we stopped coming. A few weeks ago I turned to my wife and said hey, we haven't been to the backyard in quite a while, we should go... It's so close and I recall the food being really good. Needless to say, we have been back four or five times since that first return a few weeks ago. And my instinct was absolutely correct. The food is amazing, the patio has its own great vibe, especially when there's music. And the staff, especially owner Jen, are unbelievably attentive and Regularly bend over backwards to make sure your experience is five star worthy, even if you aren't planning on writing a review. There is so much good on this menu, even though it is an extensive menu. So many restaurant consultants tell chefs to not provide a huge menu because you're just spending a lot of money on ingredients you may not use. But this is a smart menu, there is a lot of overlap of common ingredients that allow this kitchen to provide a lot of different variety. I mean, my goodness, in just a few visits we've had the steamers, sliders, the grub dog, the Ruben, the club sandwich, the seafood pasta, the grilled chicken breast and at least one salad. Everything is delicious and plentiful, a real dining delight. But here's the thing that sticks out at me the most... The thing that you hope for from an honest restaurant owner. The last several times that we were there, Jen was our server. My mother-in-law, who, like me, loves a good bowl of soup, asked how the tortilla soup was. Normally, Jen said, the tortilla soup is delicious... But this batch isn't very good. We are still trying to perfect a new recipe and the soup isn't very good, I would not recommend it. That is refreshing honesty From someone who understands her customers. It's fine to recommend something, it's even smarter to recommend against something. We will continue to go to the backyard, since it's in our backyard and look forward to eventually having tried everything on the menu. Honestly, I haven't found something on the menu that I wouldn't order again. Thanks Jen and your team, for giving us a place that we feel comfortable and well fed.

Waiting to be served to me!

Attention Yelpers, the fundamental reason for this app is to read people's opinion and make an educated guess, well, if you are considering coming here, I highly recommend it for the true Yelpers. Regardless of what you order, you will realize that top ingredients go into everything that comes out of that kitchen. I have not dined here for a long time due to scheduling constraints but let me tell you, nothing has changed and I'm just impressed with the quality and portion of the food. I love potato skins and I believe I had the best potato skins that I've ever had here at The Backyard. Give it a shot if you've never been there, I promise you that you would be a repeat customer.

Solid happy hour. Great kids menu. Above average draft selection. Can only speak to happy hour and lunch specials. Both good.

Food was ok, Service is questionable. This place should be a bar scene only, instead of a restaurant and bar. Tables outside were dirty and wanting napkins took to long to get. The fries were really soggy?

Hell no! Service sucks here.. food is not good! Servers sucks!

Patti, the birthday GIRL (59) wanted a place that could accommodate a large number of friends. The group meets three times a week at a specific time and at set locations. The only variable is the number of people who participate. Popular girl, is Patti. Cannot count the number of people who attended. She provided, chips and dip and birthday cake ( plus fun prizes for no particular reason). The guests purchased food and beverages from Lucky Luke's tent. The beef and chicken tacos were 100 per cent delicious as were the fries and quesadilla. We also had flights of beer and mixed drinks. Every attendee was required to participate in playing Corn Hole. There is large yawn that can be used for people to play various games, there are a few outside vendors with food trucks, and a small bar inside to order drinks. I got the Midnight in Hawaii. It was decent but it did say notes of coconut which felt lacking. The staff were friendly enough, but nothing crazy. I think this is okay spot to host larger gatherings and that's what I think is meant to do. I don't think it does anything too different but I think if you want to do a celebration with a larger group, this is good spot!

Everything was well organized and the staff made us feel welcome right away. The food was amazing--the wings, cheese sticks, and pretzel bites were huge hits with everyone at the party. You can tell the kitchen cares about what they're putting out. Chef Angel was especially friendly and professional, and it was clear he takes pride in the food. The service was excellent too. Chris and the bartenders/servers were quick, attentive, and super friendly, even with a big group. Drinks were coming out fast and everyone felt taken care of. Overall the whole place was clean, accommodating, and just a really fun atmosphere for a birthday celebration. We had a fantastic time and will definitely be back for another night of pool, food, and drinks. Highly recommend for parties or a fun night out!

This is a large,…read morenicely-maintained pool room with assorted other games available (darts and such), a great digital jukebox system, and plenty of TV's playing sports. The decor is "industrial," but it's clean and airy, so there's no sense of being in a "dive" -- in fact, this is a family-friendly place, and I saw some youngish couples playing pool on what seemed to be afternoon dates. The physical bar is relatively small, with only about 8-12 seats, but that's because they're keeping as much space open as possible for game play. The staff was friendly and chatty, and seemed quite intent on making sure everyone had everything they needed. The menu is wider and more interesting than one would expect in a pool hall environment, with creative pizzas, burgers, sandwiches and salads promising a more unique and memorable meal than the average hangout. I opted to try the Pastrami Pizza: a traditional tomato and mozzarella pie topped with what they call "mustard fried pastrami," onions, chopped pickles, and a drizzle of yellow mustard. It's a good-sized pizza, larger than a true individual pie, and enough for 2 people to share. The pastrami was savory without being too salty, while the pickles, onions and mustard all added nice pops of flavor without feeling like a gimmick. My one disappointment was that the pizza was not prepared well-done as requested, making the crust more doughy than crisp. Also, the temperature in the venue was darn near frigid, so my pizza got cold very quickly, which reduced my ability to enjoy it as much as I would have if the pie had been piping hot. Other food being enjoyed in close proximity to me looked and smelled very good (wings and burgers), and like I said, the people were all top notch hosts. So, while the final pizza prep could use some improvement, I think these folks are doing a very good job of making bar food that's more interesting and memorable than you'll find anywhere else in the area. Definitely stop in and give them a whirl.

Their Sweet Sally is a very nice, simple seltzer to which customers can add a flavored syrup, but I enjoyed it plain. the 7.3% ABV was a perfect delight and refreshing on this warm SCV night. Plenty of room to hunker down, spread out, group tables for your 10 besties, or belly up to the bar. We brought grub from Capriotti's, others had The Stand, and others grabbed some tacos outside. I really enjoy the freedom of a simple brewhouse allowing food. I think it improves the casual hang vibe a LOT! The taco tent, and I suppose the other rotating food vendors, set up in the cul-de-sac, about 50 yards away, not right outside. JUST OUTSIDE is plenty of free parking. I can really see why locals have dubbed this a "hidden gem".
