Backyard Grill. This name should with a doubt be part of your vocabulary! There is no other Portuguese bbq that does as good as a job. Being Portuguese myself I usually expect to have an everyday chop bbq with the same type of food. BUT when I went to the Backyard Grill they're limit to delicious food reached beyond the sky. Their chicken in garlic sauce had my mouth watering even while I was eating it! there was so much food on my plate but I couldn't stop there! I began forcing myself to eat this delicious food!!! We had takeout from them on Friday night. They told me 20 minutes on the phone but it was more like 50 minutes. When I arrived I saw how busy they were. I would have waited longer because the food is worth the wait. We had the Chicken Picadinho and the half BBQ chicken with rice and vegetables. Both very tasty and the portions are HUGE!! Enough for another meal and possibly more. I've been to many places in the Ironbound in Newark, NJ, and this place is just as good. They could probably charge more money for their orders because of the quality and quantity of their food but I'm glad they don't. If you're in the area, this is a must for you. Went here Valentines day, had too wait a little as expected, but well worth it. Marinated olives were great to start. Full portions feed two easily, if not more. Prices were very reasonable. Loved the tres leches cake too. Love that it's BYOB! read more

Real quick review, had the whole chicken which came with yellow rice and fries, also ordered spare ribs. The spare ribs were ok the chicken along with the rice and fries were great. Usually this type of places have crappy fries but, not them. Now to move what i didn't like was their cauliflower' carrot sides that all Portuguese places give as a side. This were not pickled they were steamed' very weird for a Portuguese place but ok i guess i will let that slide but, their beans were down right nasty, tasted like eating raw sewage from a deadman's asshole on a nice hot summer day. Overall the main dishes were good to great and the price was decent. So if your in Union County definitely give them a try. read more

I only give it three stars for the interior. The food...easily a 4 to maybe 5 stars. I had read other reviews and they were excellent, so I tried it. I found the restaurant to be more of a take-out kind of place. I ordered the Portuguese BBQ spare ribs with yellow rice and beans. Absolutely delicious. This is the best Portuguese BBQ in the area, which is saying a lot since there are a ton of these restaurants. The taste and quality of the food is always consistent and portion sizes are huge. Great bang for your buck. I come here at least once every few months but I tend to order the same things, the chicken, ribs and shrimp and garlic appetizer. I don't know what they put in their shrimp and garlic sauce but it tastes amazing paired with their rolls, I could probably just eat that alone without the shrimp! read more

We went there for a late lunch last Sunday 3/12/2017, the place appears simple, no elaborate decorations, has a homey feel to it. We ordered the fried calamari as appetizer, which is a lot for the price we pay, perfectly cooked and seasoned, we also ordered the half chicken and half ribs combo and the sirloin steak both of the orders came with two sides- simple, no nonsense food. I work at a place that is just 5 houses down the road from where I live. Some people ordered delivery from here and I thought cool, my husband and I like portuguese and I figured we had a new place to get delivery from. A few days later I called them and they refused to deliver to my house saying it was outside the delivery zone, I told them they had delivered to a place that was on my block and actually further away than my house. They didnt care and told me they could not deliver. Although annoyed I would have gotten over it if they hadn't deliver to my work place again just 2 days later! This is a terrible way to run a buisness, my husband and I are pretty lazy about cooking and usually go out or order in almost every night so their loss also I tried some of the food my co workers ordered and it was just alright....Clark BBQ is much better. read more

Very good chicken Pichodino. I added chorizo to it too. Lots of potatoes and cooked in some kind of wine sauce. It's not the best I've ever had (Valenca's) but it's close to me. A year later, we finically decided to dine at the place. Because of the previous amazing delivery experience, we had high hopes. For some reason, the food was only half as good as when we ordered delivery. The service was also very slow (and it wasn't busy), and the place was kinda dirty (dried up food on the walls next to the tables). The food was certainly still good and above average, but I don't think we'll be back. The restaurant had no atmosphere. Maybe we'll try ordering delivery again some time. read more

My fiancé is Portuguese and we have both been to several Portuguese places in the area. We started with the soup of the day which was lukewarm. Great good, huge portions. Make sure you understand what you are ordering in terms of size and don't get surprised! Most of the entrees can easily support two meals. Prices reasonable. You can't beat the prices for the amount of food you receive. I have had several items from the menu, the ribs, chicken, steak, all excellent and they have the freshest salad. The olives and warm rolls are a bonus! The cappucino is the best that I've had, smooth, silky and excellent taste. Backyard grill is a good quality spot for Portugese food in the area. I'm a big fan of their BBQ combos and the way they add pickle juice in the cauliflower (sounds weird but trust me, it's good). We have been eating here since the place opened. Good food but the owner is not friendly. Still we ate here. But the last 2 years the food quality is diminishing and when we order pick up or delivery our steak is almost always cooked incorrectly. We like it medium and they always cook it rare or well done! How hard is it to cook a steak to temp? When we would complain the owner said that "Picky customers shouldn't order steaks"!! Really!?!? That was the last straw!! Got a half chicken platter. Good but not great. Comes with two sides and a roll. I got rice and black beans. Chicken was tasty but a bit dry. Comes with some pickled veggies to use as a condiment with the chicken. Yum. Rice was also good. The beans has a strange off taste so I couldn't eat them at all. Also comes with Louisiana hot sauce which didn't go well at all. Portuguese bbq and creole hot sauce is just not a good combo. I wish it was some sort of salsa or dipping sauce. I was in the area for a business and looking for a quickie lunch place. I couldn't pass it up when I saw Portuguese BBQ sign. So based on my only visit, I think it is fantastic. The BBQ chicken and ribs dish I had for $10 was great value and tasty. Chicken is crispy outside and moist inside. The ribs are well seasoned and rightly cooked. And the vegetables and olives they give you are much better than I imagined. The place is clean and the service was really good too. I have to give it a star..... ordered a garlic shrimp and and half way through I realized the shrimp were not clean!!! I went back and told the lady / owner and with her nasty brut portugués way said "we never clean the shrimp, nobody does" first of all that's disgusting and 2nd it can make you sick.... it's straight up shrimp poop!!!
