This place is so great! I got the everything bagel with cream cheese and it was exactly what I expected/wanted. I also got the Avril and daaaaang, it was everything I didn't KNOW I wanted. So tasty and messy and really blew my mind. I want to try the rest of the menu but can't ever imagine passing that up haha. Service does take a bit, but they are made to order, and it's worth the wait. The staff is super friendly and seem to genuinely appreciate people coming in. 10/10! read more

Only got to try one bagel as we got there at the tail end of their day. The texture and flavor of the bagel was good. It had a massive heap of cream cheese which I loved. The only thing that I wish could've been slightly better is that the slice from the top bagel to bottom of the bagel were not proportionate enough. They sliced the bottom half of my bagel thin so eating it felt uneven. Definitely will try some more of the bagel and various flavors of cream cheese they have to offer. I've always loved Bagel Joy since trying them at local farmers markets but I'm so happy they finally have a store front! Being from Chicago and my wife from New York, we have expectations, and having lived in the NOVA area for decades, we have found Bagel Joy bagels to be the closest in taste and texture to our expectations. We first enjoyed their bagels at the Loudon One farmers market and were so happy when they opened their store. They are still a fairly young company and are continuously improving their offerings, but you can count on the chewy, substantial texture that characterizes a New York style bagel. P. S. If you loved their short-lived seasonal "blueberry French toast" bagel, which gave the impression of holding a full bacon and eggs and French toast breakfast in your hand, a satisfying approximation (while waiting for them to re-offer that bagel) is a bacon egg and cheese sandwich on a blueberry bagel. read more

First, Bagel Joy has very large shoes to fill in the neighborhood. Part of that is being a health aware restaurant. Bagels are not the most nutritious breakfast options, but simple options make them much better. Not talking tofu and sprouts, if that's your thing- enjoy. All cream cheese is fat-full here. No option for light cream cheese or fat-free, which is common (and extremely easy to make). I asked for a lox (high in omega and healthy fats) on a scooped and toasted bagel. Was told "oh we don't do that here" and I would have to do that myself (doesn't exactly work for a bagel already smeared in full fat cream cheese now does it?) Scooping is common in most restaurants from their competitors to Subway sandwiches. Really? How hard is it to accommodate a diabetic? Only thing I can say positive is the restroom was clean and nicely redone. Have a ways to go before I can recommend. read more

I *so* wanted to love this new store replacing the recently closed stalwart Bagel Buddies after the unlikely occurrence that postponed their planned initial opening. The space, save the missing glass at the entrance where the unfortunate event occurred really looks quite nice. The ordering flow is reversed from how Bagel Buddies did it, and I dare say Bagel Joy probably should have emulated it, as placing orders on the other side of the store, then waiting for them where normally the line would form will be difficult during busier periods and feels unnatural flow-wise. That said, only a half hour after store opening today it was indeed awkward, but fine. I placed my to go order for two untoasted bagels, both with plain cream cheese without much fanfare to a friendly order taker, then went to the other side to wait for my name to be called to collect it. What *wasn't* fine, was just about everything else. The store was relatively empty, save several other folks waiting for their orders, but despite this the wait time seemed far too long for my taste, especially for such a simple order. Obviously the people preparing the order did not find it simple, because one bagel was heavily toasted despite the receipt specifically calling for it not to be, and the other bagel had olive infused cream cheese instead of plain. A double fail. The bagel with the olive cream cheese went into the trash (it may have been toasted too, come to think of it), so I can't comment on how it tasted. The initial one that was toasted was an everything bagel, and it was as solid as a rock with the bagel and cream cheese flavor quite unimpressive, not resembling anything like a New York bagel. I will say that they do not skimp on the cream cheese, quite to the contrary. I needed to wipe away over half the amount, as it was quite excessive. That said, I would much rather have too much, rather than the reverse. One other thing I noted was the finished bagel was not cut in half, so that the cream cheese squeezed out everywhere. Probably as time passes the store will change this practice. To wrap things up there was only one other thing I noticed that I recommend the store change.... The lack of offering garlic bagels. When you can offer extremely inauthentic and obscure varieties like Asiago, blueberry and the like, how about first offering the standard New York ones? Alas, based on this visit I doubt I will be back, but I truly hope the store improves in time and is successful. 2.5 stars out of 5. read more

We've tried the blueberry bagel (daughter), onion bagel sandwich (hubs), and rosemary bagel (me) and they were hands down the best bagel/cream cheese combo we have tried in Virginia. Hubs was raving about his bagel sandwich, how the sausage is the best he's had on a sandwich. Bagels are thick and chewy with plenty of cream cheese - ask for a sample of their different cream cheese flavors! The ambiance is clean and gives me Starbucks vibes. Went here for the first time and loved it! I got a cinnamon raisin with cream cheese and my husband got Asiago cheese. Both had a generous amount of cream cheese on them and the service was friendly and prompt. We also got a bakers dozen of assorted bagels to take home. All have been delicious: crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. My husband says the sesame bagels are the best he's ever had: lots of sesame seeds and great texture! read more

Despite being staffed with 7 (!!) people behind the counter, it took Bagel Joy more than 20 mins after I had paid to make ONE egg-and-cheese bagel, which was $7.49 plus tax. Most of the employees especially those in the front of the house are just standing around doing almost nothing. I've been to bagel shops in manhattan where I waited in a line halfway around the block and still got my sandwich faster!!!! ...The Everything bagels were well coated and had a nice crunch, which was good. But it's an odd mix: no salt and no poppyseeds, very little garlic and onion, mostly just tons of black sesame seeds. Mostly they need to get orders done faster to bring that bagel joy. read more

We used to love Bagel Buddies and were devastated when they closed but we held out hope that Bagel Joy would be a good replacement and it is exactly what we hoped it would be. The bagels are authentic--Virginia bagels and hoagie rolls are usually a disappointment for us--but my untoasted bagel was the real deal. And the Veggie Bagel was perfect breakfast sandwich. The staff were so pleasant and coffee was awesome, which is also a rarity. You either get good bagels or good coffee but rarely both. And we picked up a $5 bag of day old bagels--which are still soft and fresh tasting-- makes this place a winner! read more

I was pleased to see how fresh and clean the remodeled interior of the shop was. I was there at a not busy time, around 12:30 and was served immediately by a very friendly cashier. I was just there to try out the bagels so I ordered an everything and a sesame. The bagels were totally covered in toppings and really looked more like rolls than bagels. They were small and round but probably if they had been flatter and had a larger hole would be a regular size bagel. They are extremely dense. I asked if the everything bagel had salt on it and was assured it did. On eating it however I think it should just be called a seeded bagel. It was almost entirely poppy and black and white sesame seeds with two tiny pieces of onion. I don't think I will be back. read more

Went in today and the bagel I got was delicious! However very poor selection and they didn't cut the bagel in half, which was frustrating. The bagel itself was also quite small. The good is that the bagel, at least the sesame, was covered in sesame seeds. Definitely a star there. I also love small businesses and I admire anyone trying to make a bagel. I'll do a star for that. It's not easy to make a proper one. Sadly this isn't a proper New York style bagel. It's just A bagel. This fad of saying something is "New York style" needs to stop. These are Virginia bagels: flat, definitely small, and overpriced. I ate half in three bites. They are about the size of a frozen Lenders bagel. Maybe it was just the one I got but as I stood there watching them do the shmear, it was every bagel. At least they were liberal with the cream cheese. Star for that. Had this just been a bagel shop that said they made bagels I wouldn't be so critical. But saying New York style is ridiculous. Personally, I'd rather see someone try to aim for "the best Virginia bagel" instead of "hey we're like the original but not really." Own it. I think there's potential here. But they need to be much bigger for that price and they need to be much thicker. read more

Their bagels are the best I've ever had! The Rosemary bagel is to die for but you really can't go wrong with their other flavors. They have vegan-friendly options like plain, rosemary, blueberry, the everything bagel, and cinnamon raisin. There might be a few more vegan options as well. I've got to check them out the market! Hopefully there will be more plant-based options but what they have now is absolutely incredible. You can tell they work really hard and love what they do. Love supporting local small businesses.
