I don't understand the low-star ratings on Yelp. I have been going to this place for years and I've never had an issue with the food, pricing or service. The bagels are delicious: large, crusty, but with a nice chew and taste. (and this is coming from a bagel-snob). The people behind the counter are always very nice even when it's busy. I also like the locals/regulars who always eat here; they are very colorful and interesting to listen to. This is one of the few places remaining where you can sit down and get a nice bacon, egg, potato platter without having to wait for a table or endure slow table service. First off, it's "by" not "on" (I already submitted a business edit so hopefully that updates soon). Either way, it won't change the feelings of this reviewer and the fact that nothin' special is really happening here after today's visit with my girlfriend and her family. But wait. I don't get it. There's no reviews for this place on Yelp? The interior looked like it's been there for decades (and perhaps that it hasn't been updated or even cleaned much since). I couldn't help but notice the stained papers on a ragged caulk board to the left of the fading and old posted menus. Oh and the bagel laying on the floor next to where employees enter and exit wasn't so appetizing either... Right. Let's get back to that confusing Yelp page situation. It seems (from a little research) that this establishment has had a few other names before it became BBTB. Perhaps new management? Well a few of the employees behind the counter that were yelling out "NEXT!" like it was doing them a disservice and the guy who helped us (some hospitality was left to be desired) didn't bode well for this spot and it's future. Though it was intriguingly odd how busy the place seemed to be. Plenty of people ordering bagels, egg sandwiches, and the like. I suppose it's just become an Oakdale staple to locals, but I really don't see the appeal. Most importantly, I didn't taste it either. My toasted everything bagel with jalapeño cream cheese lacked any real flavor outside of some nice heat from the spread, probably because it was absolutely smothered in it. My GF and her mother both had egg everything bagels with regular cream cheese and agreed on the flavor failure via bagel. As for the female's father, he ordered an onion bagel with chicken salad and said it was the worst he's ever had...wowsers. Overall, I don't really "get" Bagels by the Bay. Yeah, maybe it's been there for a while with other names and maybe it has some cutesy maritime decor and maybe it even has a following from Oakdale folk, but that's not enough to save it from this two star review. Dirty-looking insides, lackluster staff, and bagels that missed the boat on taste just doesn't cut it. Next time we're looking for some dough we'll get it elsewhere and not "by" or "on" or anything dealing with a bay. read more

Tasteless bagels, vegi cream cheese that was little more then cream cheese with a few scallions. Maybe the folks in Oakdale NY have no taste but these guys will never see me in their doors again! For your edification, by tasteless bagels I mean the two everything bagels I purchased with vegi cream cheese. The bagels were sesame with one or two sunflower seeds, no salt, no onion, on garlic, nada. Maybe they should go to the supermarket and in the spice area look for bottled everything bagel spice. That's what it should look and taste like. Good luck getting something with taste at this place. I want to point out that the owners of this place apparently don't care what their clients think about their food service as they never claimed this business. read more

I have been going to this place for all the years I have been in Oakdale. I have tried many other bagel places and Bagels by the Bay has the freshest, most delicious of all I have tried. We moved to Islip two years ago and continue to drive to Oakdale if we want bagels. I often get an egg sandwich on an egg onion bagel and my husband gets an everything twist with scallion cream cheese. Both are the best I've had. We tried three bagel places around us and they are inconsistent, making the ride to Oakdale worthwhile. I will continue to get bagels from Bagels by the Bay whenever I have a craving. read more

No stars, actually. This place continues to be visually dirty anytime I've been there. They rarely wear gloves when handling food. Most young employees are poorly trained, and cannot handle simple orders, creating long waits for absolutely mediocre bagels and cream cheese spreads. The coffee station continues to appear filthy and unkempt. Without question, the very worst bagel shop imaginable. read more

food is fine I have no complaints. my complaint is that this establishment does not know how to answer the phone. i live ten minutes away and it would be perfect timing if I could call and place my order right before I leave to pick it up and then it would be ready when I arrive. but no. they don't answer the phone. ever. and so I have to drive ten minutes then order and wait another ten to fifteen minutes then drive back. this wastes so much time. read more

So I went on a wim ... Let me try a new place since I moved to the area recently ... I wouldn't give it any stars but the girl was very nice there that's the only reason for one star honestly..the old Korean man at the counter screaming at the poor girls god bless those girls cause I'd never ... They Cook burnt eggs I got like 2-3ish slivers of fatty disgusting bacon It was literally all fat I had maybe a half a slice I had a piece of meat on it and that was questionable The place is so dirty I didn't notice until I was waiting and I was walking around the store and looking for the stuff to make my coffee ..the place has a old smell like mold and yeast with hangover throw up the coffee pots where so greasy that the coffee was oily inside the pots .. so I went for tea... I accidentally knocked over the suger and went to clean it up and a small family of small bugs went running across the counter I honestly don't know if it was a roaches or some kind of other bug .. It ran too fast.. by the discussing this of this please I will say there are roaches... if I didn't pay already I would have left I was so grossed out I just grabbed the egg sandwich opened it .. was thinking maybe cause I'm starving then thought twice .. the bagel and eggs wound up in the dumpster .I was not taking a chance .. How did the board of health inspect this place blind folded and a nose plug ..not one thing looked appetizing after that. I was worried that bugs running around where going to hitch w ride on my kids or the food bag or my clothes so disgusting this place should be shut down and condemned.. a customers in the parking lot said he just comes for his mom 1 bagel .. but gave me the heads up to the bagel store down the road 1000x better cleaner... Not for nothing I rather pay a little more and get quality food .. not salmonella. You can definitely tell they dont mop the floor or clean a single thing in that place. Read the health department violation people I promise you they have A TON OF MULTIPLE MAJOR HEALTH VIOLATIONS shut this place down before someone gets really sick...
