Very authentic and delicious New York style bagels! The bagels have a thick crust on the outside and the inside is soooo soft. My favorite combo is plain bagel + date&honey cream cheese. Oh wow! The regulars at Coffee Bar now have an amazing spot to get the best bagels to go with the best coffee in Berkeley. The bagel sandwiches are divine. I had the SuperClassic with the most delicious cream cheese on a light and crunchy "everything" bagel. The toppings of fresh tomato, cucumber, and red onions were sliced thin and didn't fall off my bagel with each savory bite. Loved the dill and capers. Past two times I went they messed up my order and charged me for more. First time, I order a classic with lox and all the regular stuff. They don't give me any lox. Second time, I order a cinnamon raisin bagel(costs extra btw) then they don't give me a cinnamon raisin bagel -- instead a plain bagel. And the lowest tip for your incorrect order is 18%. I finally got around to trying this place, and I'm happy that I did. They have a variety of bagels and fillings to satisfy your craving. It can be a little intimidating at first, but the menu also has easy choices for you to try. The sandwiches come open-faced with lots of filling, and they were delicious. My favorite one is the Sushinova. For all you sushi lovers, I recommend you try it. It really tastes like a roll of sushi. The Farmstand is also good. The ingredients and bagels are fresh. Bageltopia was opened by Dan Graf of Baron's Bagels, Jeff Davis Of Fellini Caffeebar, and Mike Daillak of Sam's Log Cabin in the space where Fellini had been. We particularly enjoyed its dog friendly patio. Unbeknownst to me Bageltopia was already closed when I arrived. Fortunately that wasn't a problem in terms of buying bagels. I had intended to buy three onion and three everything to try them out, but they were out of onion so I bought only everything. I had one today and it was good. I particularly liked the texture. Hella bagels are still my favorite everything bagels of all I've tasted, but these are next. I will try again to get their onion bagels. read more

I'm pretty basic when it comes to my bagel desires. I like a good sesame bagel, toasted, with butter. Bageltopia got the sesame bagel right. But when it came to the "toasted" and "with butter" part, they stumbled. In terms of toasting, I expect for the open surface of the bagel to be browned to some extent. Unfortunately, there wasn't any browning on my bagel. It was warm, which provided evidence that they attempted a toasting, but "toasted" it was not. And when we come to the "with butter" part. It was like they applied the butter like they were using a highlighter pen. There was faint yellowing on the open surface, but there was more dry unbuttered surface area than buttered. This made for a bagel that was warm and dry. There wasn't even any melted butter on the paper with which they wrapped the butter. The paper was dry! If I pay $1 extra for some butter, then gimme some butter! I'll probably try this again, but next time I'll give them some help in understanding what I mean by "toasted, with butter". read more

Just want to say, they make great bagels, their service leaves a lot to be desired. Went in and ordered a coffee and four plain bagels, no slicing, no toasting, no butter, no cream cheese, nada, just put four bagels in a bag.... Well, got my coffee, added the cream and went back to the counter to wait for the bagels to be bagged.... after 10 minutes waiting in the pick up area, still no bagels, asked one of the clerks if there was a problem with the order, said he would check, disappeared into the back, never to be seen again.... finally see the manager and ask about my order, they cant seem to find it... why, because they were still baking the plain bagels... this is at 8AM, when I asked him why no one at any point said the plain was still in the oven and I would have picked some other flavor and the manager just takes on that infuriating California-ese look of dude what's your problem, at this point I have been in the place for over 20 minutes, and I told him AT THIS POINT I DONT CARE WHAT THE FLAVOR IS, EITHER CANCEL THE ORDER OR PLACE FOUR BAGELS IN A BAG AND AND i CAN GET TO WORK.... and the manager still stares with that smarm look of dude... So, suffice it to say, the level of service leaves a lot to be desired (ie if the plain bagels are still in the oven, tell the customer they wont be ready for xx minutes and the customer can decide to either wait or order a different flavor bagel, don't leave them hanging at the pick up window for 20 minutes).... I think from now on I'll just go elsewhere, Fellini's is right next door and there are plenty of other places to get coffee within walking distance of this place.... and btw, hold your tip money until they actually hand you your order.... read more

I live in west Berkeley and although I like Boichic, Bageltopia is a solid as it comes for bagels. I got the everything bagel which was fragrant and warm out of the oven. I think the thing that sets it apart for me is they have a very comfortable casual cafe with a substantial menu. The staff are fairly well know to us from the years of the very popular coffeebar next door. They have always been sweet, so let's hope they keep that up because it is seriously hopping with people. read more

This place is making legit New York bagels and I am so impressed and thrilled it's in Berkeley! It's not Montreal style, it's not Californian style (round dry bread in the shape of a bagel), it's the best New York style bagel that I've had in such a long time! This is including the three places I tried IN New York when I was last there. I cannot say enough good things about the bagel! I am seriously so happy and will be telling everyone about this place! Located beside Fellini Coffee Bar which is already a neighborhood favorite, Bageltopia will no doubt become a new favorite quickly! This review is based on my first time checking out Bageltopia. I was immediately intrigued by their vegan options. I'm not a vegan person, but dairy intolerant; vegan cream cheese is rare to find at bagel shops. Even here in the Bay Area. And it was truly worth it. Their vegan cream cheese is delightful, in addition to multiple vegan options. Their costumer service was also great. And although it seemed very busy inside, once I ordered my food it took me less than 10 seconds to find a spot. Albeit, a table for two. I was on University heading toward I-580 and Bageltopia was a convenient stop and it has parking in the back. The woman who took my order at the counter was very friendly and patient. The bagels themselves were a mixed bag so to speak. They were nicely chewy and had an interesting (not in a bad way) taste, perhaps yeast? They rose nicely and evenly and were not dreadfully bready. I thought they were a bit small, between a regular bagel and a mini bagel. Also the onions on my onion bagel were burnt and bitter. The other types came out fine. I still think bagels taste better in NY and even LA, but I appreciate that new bagel places continue to pop up and shoot for quality and tradition. I like Boichick better but they're pricier and a hassle to drive to so I might try this place again. read more

Its a bagel shop with a pretentious name, but anyway, I don't think the bagels are so great, but the atmosphere is odd for a used to be pizza place and when I went, the place was practically empty. Everything is in "to go" containers, you know the expensive kind of to go containers (let's remember, we're in Berkeley, the first city to ban Styrofoam) and the kind of to go containers that are pretty sturdy and reusable, biodegradable, but they are, or course, incorporated in the cost of a bagel ($2.50 ea). My friend had a bagel with two fried eggs. It looked good, but why the heck don't they give you utensils with this open-faced bagel sandwich? I got the August special, which was a Caprese bagel, with Heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil. I took one bite, and it was fine. I asked for the bagel to be well toasted, that didn't happen, or it would have been so much better. The bagel sandwich would have held up better with those juicy Heirloom tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, if the bagel was well toasted. Nothing spectacular at all. I ended up eating the rest that evening, a no-no, if you're a true, blue bagel aficionado (which is why Bageltopia closes at 2pm.) I'm sure they get packed in the early morning hours, and I believe it was a smart move to close at 2pm. No one is going to sell many bagels after that time. The service was okay. Berkeley is now full of what I call the bagel wars, and each one has customers raving about what they like, their own version of what a bagel should be. etc. I love(d) House of Bagels in SF and thought they were the best. I grew up on Jewish foods only because my mother was a maid, and we got all the leftovers from all the Jewish holidays and parties, so I have my own version of what a bagel should be. These are okay. There are two foods I still haven't found comparable to the east coast, even after living here over 50 years: bagels and pizza. read more
