Plenty of shaded lot parking for a Saturday afternoon though fairly strong attendance of library patrons all the same. With parking down below, the library was up on the second floor with the front of the entrance decorated with tall red, blue, and yellow flowerlike installations. The library looks and feels inviting, warmly lit by sunlight peering in through the front windows. Sprinkled around are decorative pieces showing the local wildlife, mounted on the walls. Noise level was kept to a minimal, so it also felt like a great opportunity to just relax and getting some reading done. As for me, there was a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle near the center of the library that kept me occupied.

You will walk through a small museum with Chatsworth history, a little house, and an accompanying garden. There is also a little dynamite shack that you pass on the way in. What was most amazing is how this area has evolved over time. Once green and full of thriving plant life, it is now home to a park and a community center, in addition to the museum. Admission is free. They are open on the first Sunday of the month from 1-4 pm. Park in the community center parking lot and take the trail down.

I expected a small office with a single desk where I'd request a map, pay my money, and be on my way. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a well-stocked gift shop with books, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area souvenirs, clothing, and other local gifts. They had Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area sweatshirts and t-shirts by American Apparel. They even had Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area magnets, water bottles, and water bottle carriers. Art pieces from local artists were also featured in the store. I had initially planned on picking up a $3 map of the Santa Monica Mountain trails but the helpful docent showed me some beautiful waterproof and tear resistant plastic Tom Harrison topographic maps. I ended up buying two - Malibu Creek State Park and Topanga State Park. They were $9.95 but I felt it was worth it - I figured I'd end up killing less trees in the long run if I could re-use the maps over and over. My friend picked up a jar of locally grown and made Meyer Lemon and Blood Orange jelly. I picked up a jar of locally grown honey. I'm not sure what the daily hours are but she said they were open from 7 am to 5 pm today (a Saturday). They also had very well maintained bathrooms so you could always swing by here, check out the awesome store, and use the facilities before you hit the trails. It's this…read moreslightly futuristic, slightly industrial building surrounded by large trees that gives this wonderful man meets nature feel to it that I absolutely loved. It's a narrow building but long. It kinda felt like it was a bunker. But a wonderful bunker full of books. Staff was very friendly and helpful. When I mentioned I was coming to collect location stamps, they were really interested in hearing how my quest was going along with where I had been and what my favorite library to visit had been up to this point. I'm glad that this is a location not too far from where I live. I absolutely will be back.

Canoga Park Branch Library has the friendliest most helpful staff and are welcoming to all. I feel safe here and at the other libraries - especially Encino/Tarzana and West Valley Library - people there, especially the librarians, seem to hate their jobs and should think of retiring. I think they are just counting the minutes. Canoga Park Branch library is friendly to those who are handicapped, seniors, and minorities. The Encino/Tarzana branch librarian only seems to like "her people" and her shrill voice can be heard from this prima donna. Other people, she is very arrogant and nasty. I and others have complained about her. What a relief that Canoga Park Library is wonderful and they should receive a commendation for extraordinary customer service. At Canoga Park Library employees are diverse.

The library is full of large windows that bring in a lot of natural light, but since it is right off of a busy street, in my short visit several loud cars and emergency vehicles zoomed by outside breaking the peaceful, quiet interiors of the library. It could make for a difficult space to truly get in to your work or book. Staff was kind and helpful. Parking was ample compared to other branches. But the library just felt like nothing special.
