Tucked away down a side road in a residential area, we only found out about this place from a brochure of the area. Knowing how much hubs likes smoked fish, I directed him here. There is plenty of parking, and we were the only customers at the time of our visit. As soon as you open the door, you get slapped in the face with the smell of fish (of course!). I wasn't expecting the wide variety of offerings, though! Saltwater and freshwater fish, as well as scallops. If you're a little queasy about such things, there is a table about 20 feet from the door where they process the day's catch, so you may want to look away or have someone else do your shopping for you. The shopping area is small, about 6 by 15 feet, maybe? A counter with fresh fish and scallops on display and two freezers with frozen goodies. Prices were reasonable; we picked up some smoked salmon and went to a little park nearby to snack. First-time experience for Milwaukeeans who either patronize Empire Fish on Watertown Plank or Grocery stores. We were astounded and it was fun. The fishmonger (have to use the word or lose it) was very friendly and told us that they ship Whitefish to restaurants all over the U.S. We debated the choices, all reasonable, and bought Whitefish, Lake Trout and Walleye. They were kind enough to give us a styrofoam chest with ice in which to pack the fish. The reasonable price ($3.95 per lb for cleaned but not deboned Whitefish-- deboned filets cost $8.50) made us consider driving up there once in a while just to buy fresh fish (frozen is also available). When they say friesh, they don't mean "fresh-frozen" like the grocer often does. In any case, it was a great experience and we'll be back. read more

I really wanted to get some fresh Whitefish while staying up here for dinner. Thanks to a local friend, I was able to find this hidden little gem in Bailey's Harbor. When we pulled up to the location I wasn't sure they sold retail but the little store entrance was hidden by a large truck. When you walk in, it reminded me of the fish market at Pikes Place Market in Seattle. This was the real deal, fish were everywhere be cleaned and being packed in ice for delivery. The staff was very friendly and I purchased three Whitefish filets. They didn't have any prices listed and I was too cool to ask so I was expecting it to be expensive given the shortage of Whitefish over the past few years. When he told me how much it was, I had to ask him again because I could not believe my ears, $14.61? Per filet right? No, this was the grand total and I was delighted! So I pulled out my debit card to pay and of course they only take cash or checks. I had no cash but I luckily had my check book. I live about four hours south and was worried they wouldn't take my check but they did. I planned on making fish tacos and when I got back to our condo I wanted to marinate the fish but didn't realize the fish still had bones in the filets ( I'm kind of an idiot sometimes, not sure why I thought they wouldn't have bones). I pan fried the fish after marinating it for about one hour. It tasted amazing and the three filets fed six people allowing some to have second and third helpings. I'll probably have to stop again on my way home because I can't stop thinking about how good the fish was. read more

When I lived in Baileys Harbor I would buy whitefish fillets here. I would get them fresh when the boats came in-I soon found this was my favorite food. Honestly, I could eat their whitefish 3-4 times a week and never tire of it. When I moved to the Southwest, there was not a single food that could compare to my Hickey Brothers whitefish. SO, when I was back in September I bought 10lbs of frozen fillets and packed them in my foam coolers. They came home with me in my checked luggage! I could not be happier. I think if I could choose a last meal in this world it would be Hickey Brothers whitefish, red potatoes, and green beans from my garden. Pure bliss! read more

We like to do our own fish fry on occasion when in Door County and prefer to buy local and fresh. Found Hickey Bros on a recommendation - the whitefish is awesome. Hard to find, but worth the trip. Purchased fresh perch fillets and a whitefish fillet and a piece of smoked whitefish. Pan fried the perch and fresh whitefish and had a delicious dinner. Given the price of "fresh" fish at any of the local grocery stores, or the cost of a fish dinner out, you can't beat the freshness or quality of Mr hickey's fish. Well worth the search!! I have bought the incredibly fresh and delicious whitefish at Hickey Brothers many times--and have always enjoyed it immensely. Today, however, was a particularly special event. I had my 3 grandchildren with me, and we went in with an unusual request. Dennis and Mike absolutely could not have been nicer for accommodating! Great find! They have a great, helpful young lady who really knows her stuff. We bought whitefish all cut up and ready for fish tacos. Perfect!
