Second time at CHOP but first time sitting upstairs which was gorgeous. People will be slightly dressed up but nothing too extravagant, seems like it's ok to come in dressed casually as well. This place gets super busy on Memorial Day weekend but they do a great job ensuring that they are fully staffed and can churn out food and drinks quickly. We ordered the 8 ounce New York strip plus CHOP steak salad (but make it Caesar). We both got cups of soup (lobster and crab bisque or garlic potato) which were incredible. Paired with a delicious cherry sour and an old fashioned. Exactly what we wanted after a good day of exploring. We have enjoyed many dinners at Chop over the years. Weather dependent, we try to dine outside on the upper deck with a beautiful view of Sister Bay and the sunset. Service staff is always top notch. Last year we ate a later dinner inside and the ambiance was wonderful. Old school steakhouse feel with big leather seats and candle lights. It's was great. They serve a great Kentucky Old Fashioned. Nice way to kick off a great meal. The entrees and apps are all very tasty, especially the fresh salads, soups, scallops, and crabcakes. The wine list is on the pricey side, we opted for a carafe of house Italian red blend and it paired very nicely with the filets and my wallet. Don't skip the dessert. Carrot cake and key lime pie were both amazing. Only disappointing notes this year were the mashed potatoes. They had a box mashed potatoes aftertaste, not the usual Yukon gold I remember. Not sure what was going on there but it stood out. Also, we were on the upper deck again, but it felt like there was one too many tables out there. Chop is a great rooftop location for nice dining in Sister Bay! The location and sitting up on the upper deck with a view of the bay can't be beat. Definitely recommend getting reservations here! If you go between 4:30- 5:30 there is a three course early dining menu available for $35 which is a great deal! It includes most of their main dinner options, including NY strip and filet! The steak was pretty good overall, a little more done than expected but soft and flavorful and I love the addition of the house chop butter! The mashed potatoes that came with the steak were really just okay, a little dry and starchy. But the bread that came first made up for that carbs-wise because the bread is so light and airy! We also enjoyed the crab cakes as an appetizer- they are small! But tasty. And loved the key lime pie and carrot cake for desserts. read more

Met a friend for lunch at Chop today. Disappointed. I ordered wine and when it came, the waiter opened the bottle and poured it. I was surprised that it wasn't the wine I ordered. I asked about it and he checked with the bar, who told him it was the same quality as the one I ordered.??? When I started to order lunch, the sliders were sold out. Rib eye steak was grizzly, tough and tasteless. Waiter and manager were arrogant and clueless. They tired to lecture me on the meat business where I had worked for over 40 years. This was the worst eating experience we have had in door county. In the past we have had better food experiences but over the last 3 years everything has declined. Still just a wow! experience. Good service, great prices, excellent food, lively vibe, and reliable overall. We took advantage of the early dining menu and both got the Filet Mignon. It was outstanding. The potatoes are also excellent, and the salad is one of my all time favorites anywhere. We got our carrot cake desserts to go and were able to recover enough to share one of them a bit after we got home. It was decadently delicious. The diners next to us had lobster and the Chicken Schnitzel, which both looked delicious, and they seemed to be enjoying them. As a man of a certain age, I didn't want to make the reel for a Progressive commercial, so I didn't ask them how their meal was (or suggest what they should get haha). If the weather is nice, the patio here is a great spot to sip a glass of wine. Both the upstairs and downstairs are great settings, and the food is as good as you will expect. read more

The first impression of chop is lovely. Was warmly greeted, and shown to our table.we had made a reservation. Service started off great. We ordered cocktails before dinner and their dirty martini was very good. We ordered an appetizer which was Barada bruschetta that was fantastic! Moving on, we ordered our dinners. I had a steak and my husband had I believe, some sort of short ribs and a wine sauce? I wish I could remember exactly what it was. It was a little wine forward. He said it was OK wasn't great. This is where things kind of go sideways. I had a coupon from the restaurant for a free glass of wine. I showed our server the coupon and said oh I have this. Could I get a free glass of wine? And he said I don't know how to do that. And walked away. I had a second server come over and I said do you know how to use this coupon for a free glass of wine? She said no I don't really understand how to do that. Not once did either one of them say let me get the manager let me look into it for you. I don't know why establishment would send you a coupon to use for your dinner and then not honor it. Also, our server never asked if we wanted another glass of wine, another cocktail, anything else for dinner? We were just left alone until the bill came. They also gave me a chipped water glass. I don't understand how they couldn't see a huge chip missing from the glass with a crack in it. I'm just glad I didn't cut my lip. The ambience is beautiful. But the service was completely lacking. The food was just OK. If somebody would've at least tried to honor my coupon, or asked if we wanted anything else with our dinner, they could've upsold us. Sadly, no effort was made on their part. With high hopes I began my dining experience at Chop, but my hopes were dashed by the conclusion of the meal. Dined on a Saturday. Arrived just at opening and was seated promptly. Had I arrived any later, I would have had to wait for a table, which would have been terrible. There is no good space to sit and wait for a table; the bar is tiny; the bar abuts the front door, and is consequently very cold in winter; the tiny, cold bar is filled with patrons standing around waiting for a table. My darling wife and I were seated in the second floor dining room. The room was clean, and the atmosphere was decent... when the room was at-and-below 25% capacity. As the room began to fill, which didn't take long, it also didn't take long to realize that the layout of tables was poor. My table was far too close to the other tables; every table was too close to other tables. There is also no barrier in between tables. So, a large room, crammed with tables, each of which is too close to the other tables. Not great at all. And, thanks to the cramped quarters, I could smell the vile cheese smells from other diner's dishes which wrecked my experience. We ordered crab cakes. They were crispy outside, and the crab filling was moist, but there was so little lemon-garlic aioli that the cakes were rather bland. Furthermore, there were only two crab cakes serves, each of which was rather small. Drink orders placed with the waitress took a very long time to reach the table. The brandy old fashioned (sweet) that I ordered was not sweet at all and there was an overpowering amount of orange. A failure of this sort should not happen at a Wisconsin fine-dining establishment. The house Chop Salad was boring; a bunch of iceberg lettuce, too finely chopped, covered in ranch dressing, and lackluster bacon. My wife's filet mignon steak was appropriately prepared. The crispy duck, which I ordered, was served with a delicious cherry sauce but there was far too little sauce on the plate. The duck itself, when not coupled with any sauce, was rather boring. Also terribly boring was the bed of wild rice served with the duck. Why did you give me the duck's food? Feed that stuff to the duck and let me eat the bird served with a better side dish! Service was too slow and inattentive for my tastes. Every server looked like they were born in a foreign land, and I struggled to understand my waitress's English-as-a-second language. I don't need to go back. There is better dining available in Door County, especially given the prices asked. read more

I absolutely love CHOP! A place other restaurants should strive to be like! I was introduced at the suggestion of a member of my group for a girls weekend getaway to Door County. In our advance planning she mentioned the early dining menu and the need for reservations, which we took part in. Our group was here on the last Saturday in September with a 5pm reservation. Hostess promptly seated us in the corner booth on the main floor once I checked in for our reservation. While most took part in the early dining menu, patrons can also choose from the regular menu and some of our party did that. All ladies in my group raved about their food. I harbored a suspicion that the early dining menu, at a cost of $30, could have extremely small portions. Not so! I was ready to be through my beef burgundy before making the push to finish. The soup and dessert were perfectly timed and portioned companions. This has got to be the best deal in town. Please CHOP keep this just the way it is until I can return! This was honestly top 10 steaks i've ever had, in fact it made me remember why I love steak so passionately. For reference, I ordered a medium rare 12oz New York strip steak with the garlic butter (for those who need reccomendations, get this). The standard bread appetitzer was also pleasant as it wasn't too filling, and the butter it came with paired super well. The service was honestly super good, much better than a typical good restaurant. We came a bit earlier than our reservation (~19 minutes early) and were still seated immediately. We were helped very quickly, and the staff all seemed genuinely joyful and willing to help. My water was also consistently filled which I appreciated as I tend to unintentionally chug my water... The resturant itself was very nice. It was fancy but not in an imposing pretentious way that some steak places are. It gives the feel that you could show up in a fancy suit or beach clothes and still have a totally normal experience. The temperature inside was nice and chilly so thankfully I didn't find myself getting too warm while chowing down. Obviously this place is a bit pricy (around 40 bucks a person at least) but its definitely worth it. read more

While staying at the Dörr, we decided to enjoy dinner at CHOP's rooftop on a warm fall evening. We had a drink at bustling the bar while we waited for our table. When seated, our server was attentive & took our order promptly. I decided on the filet & added mushrooms. Our meal included complimentary popovers & soup. Nice, clean and friendly service. As for the food, it was ok. For a higher price point restaurant in the area that specializes in steaks I expect them to know what temperature medium rare should be. My steak came out medium well instead, way over cooked and when I told the waitress she just asked if it was "good enough" for me to eat. The atmosphere is beautiful, and the food looked excellent. The drink menu offered a good selection of wine and cocktails. Although our bartender was fine, the standout was definitely their mule. There's also an upstairs area, but we stayed in the bar section. For anyone visiting Door County, known for its scenic beauty and charming towns, Chop is a good choice. We arrived at 7p and I was told that our reservation was at 6:30pm, but the hostess was great and got us seated in the beautiful downstairs room that had somewhat of a speakeasy feel, very nice! We are big steak eaters so the bar was already set pretty high and Chop exceeded our expectations! The steaks were cooked perfectly, starter salads and soup was delicious, smashed potatoes were buttery, and to top it all off the desserts were fantastic. Our waitress - from Romania- I don't remember her name, was really prompt and helpful. She did a great job. Everyone in our group ordered something different. I had the filet with garlic topping; mushrooms and onions. The steak was cooked perfectly and the garlic topping gave it a nice flavor. Clearly overbooked on Valentine's Day. We arrived at our reservation time and waited in a crowded hallway for 20 minutes. When we got seated it was also very crowded in the seating area. The table we were sat at looked like an extra one added because it was so much smaller than all the other tables. They ran out of dishes on the menu like the duck and carrot cake. We came in for their Early Dining Menu which is quite a good deal.  It only lasts from 5:00 - 5:30pm and you will need a reservation because the openings go fast.  A big crowd came right in at 5pm, us amongst them, and we were rewarded with an excellent 3 course meal for $27.95.  Adam was our friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient server.     Wife had a cup of their cream of potato soup, the salmon entree, and carrot cake. I had their house salad, the NY strip steak, and key lime pie.  Every item was delicious and tip-top excellent quality.  I also got bearnaise butter with my steak, and the entrees are not skimped down just because it's an Early Dining promotional special.    The bus service was quite attentive and the staff kept our table cleared of finished dishes.   Adam, a 9 year veteran of this 10 year old restaurant, was also very attentive.  They also have a second floor and it was completely full like the first floor, when I took a walk to have a look after our meal.   Nice upbeat pop music was on, and a vibrant full bar was also in view up front.   Chop is a delightful, vibrant, and high quality Sister Bay dinner venue and I highly recommend this place. read more

We each ordered a French onion soup with our meals that we agreed was not very flavorful. Great cheese, but was definitely missing something. I love French onion soup so I was definitely disappointed. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly and tasted great with the Chop butter. Loved the potatoes. The ribeye was super undercooked (we asked for medium rare and it came VERY rare). The waiter actually recognized it before we asked and put it back on the grill for us. Beautiful and lovely location with the outdoor seating truly the highlight. My husband and I both had the filet - my husband did the add in of shrimp which he did not get until we were done eating. We brought it to our waitresses attention 2 times once when the food was brought and again when she checked on us. She never came back to see if we received. We then stopped the water pouring person who must have told her. The waitress then came over and said she had checked with the manager and apologized. We finally received it when we were both done eating our entrees. Never checking on how our food was. Had they noticed both my husband and I had large portions of our filets that were all grizzle. Not certain if the cut of meat was truly a filet. If it was it was a poor cut. The cook was good with what they were dealing with for the cut. They had a few opportunities to make things right and did not. Perhaps they are working through their newness but with that brings opportunity and how they work through their growing pains.
