They are still going strong, and we dropped in early on a Sunday morning for our traditional visit whilst in Door County. We picked up a couple of smoked Atlantic salmon fillets (currently $14.49/lb) on this visit. They also now sell smoked shrimp for $18.99/lb, and that's new since our last visit (albeit 4 years ago). Jill was on duty and she is the daughter-in-law of Charlie. She said her son is being groomed to be the 4th generation to run this renowned family business and that's great to hear. Smelled wonderful when I walked iin, they had four kinds of smoked fish, salmon, trout, whitefish and....something else I can't remember. Also they had cooked shrimp, guessing it was smoked also..... The trout was from Lake Huron and the whitefish was from Lake Michigan, so those are the two I got. I thought the price was really reasonable and they were both delicious, and totally different, of course. The place was clean and bright, and they all kinds of other little things, like mustards, local sodas, chips and shirts and cups, ice cream, postcards. Service was quick and friendly. Was it the best smoked fish in Door County, like I'd read about? Maybe, I don't know for sure since this is the only place in the county I've gotten smoked fish, but it very well could be true! read more

This was our second visit to Charlie's Smokedhouse and it was just as amazing as the first! Two years ago, we grabbed smoked trout to-go and loved it. This year, while spending a few nights in Door County, we went back every day for more (don't judge) this time enjoying both the Lake Michigan whitefish and smoked trout. I even had the chance to chat with John, one of their smoke masters, and learned that they brined and smoke the fish right on-site, year-round. They also offer domestic shipping. This place brings me back to my childhood at the local Fish stores in my hometown. I love how they wrap the fish in newspaper and label it. They have a gorgeous location with a deck overlooking the tip of the peninsula. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly and their products are amazing. They even have frozen whitefish cut up ready for a boil at home or fillets and various fish. read more

Absolutely delicious! Charlie's has been on my family's list of must stop places since I was a little girl. Cute little shop down by the top of the peninsula of Door County with souvenirs but most importantly smoked fish! The Atlantic salmon is our favorite. Try the smoked fish spread too! Without question the best smoked fish I've ever come across. Small, quaint and super high quality. The REAL thing. Wanted a slab of everything but fell back and just got a nice chunk of smoked salmon. It was delicious. Cracked open some spreadable cheese and nice crackers and had a feast. Service is intimate with the owners right there onsite. Super highly recommend without any reservations but with one supporting comment. Make sure you stop and buy some product. If you don't you'll be kicking yourself 20 miles down the road. read more

This place is an awesome place for smoked fish and cheeses too. We have been going to Door County for many years and never stopped here before. This trip we stopped and I purchased smoked whitefish dip and some cheddar cheese and they were both excellent. I will be going here again during future trips. Next visit maybe some smoked salmon and enjoy the goodness. This place is located near Gill's Rock in Door County is the furthest you can drive up there, but worth the trip. Drove all the way up Door County to try out Charlie's Smokehouse! I thought that the smoke salmon that they have cooked there for you is delicious! Definitely get that if you are going up there. We also had the whitefish dip, which was good, but there was another whitefish producer in Door County that I preferred (Charlie's was a bit heavy on the cream cheese). The view from the back patio is gorgeous so if it is a nice day out, sit out there with a soda and some salmon! read more

I love places like this - anything smoked especially fish is high on my list. The reviews are very strong so we stopped on our way to catching the ferry to Washington Island (which we didn't end up taking given the lake was angry). When we got out of the car we were enveloped in the scent of smoke. That alone was a sign of an authentic smokehouse. I was tempted to buy more and should have but we just got a couple of their spreads/dips - the smoked salmon and the smoked whitefish. Next time. read more

When we were visiting Door County over Memorial Weekend, we were told that Charlie's smokehouse offers some nice smoked white fish. We stayed in Sister Bay and the drive was about 20 mins up north. There were a few parking spots in the front. The store is very unassuming and two ladies were working. We got a few pieces of smoked salmon, whitefish and trout. Very flavorful and we actually finished the smoked trout in the car (oops, didn't make it back to Madison!) Reasonable prices and very friendly staffs. Will definitely stop by again on our next visit! read more

Fresh smoked salmon Atlantic & Pacific, White fish from the lake. Wow hard to choose. The lovely lady (Mrs. Charlie?) gave a wonderful rundown on each of the fishes available. Great little place with excellent smoked fish (salmon, trout, whitefish) and they sell the bags that keep you food hot/cold so you can keep your smoked fish fresh longer while you continue to explore the area. Excellent smoked fish which I highly recommend. The trout and Atlantic Samon are well worth the money. I will be doing regular orders from now on. For what you pay in the grocery store for a small piece of smoked fish the quality of charlies you can not even compare them. Do yourself a favor and give it a try. So happy they actually opened up. Was passing by and stopped in. Almost didn't buy anything cause you can't choose your size. Wish I would have bought more. The only actual local fish waS the white fish so that's what I chose. It was so juicy and not fishy and smoked just right. You just need to be mindful of tiny bones. We ate the whole piece and even the kids enjoyed it. Pleasantly surprised. Would like to try the others. read more

The Rueben has good meat but the sandwich is hard to eat with such big chunks of meat. Kinda disappointing.

It was a tad bit dry, but I still ate the whole thing! 6.5/10 Overall setting is pretty, it's spacious they have a big menu. Staff was super nice!

Island Orchard Cider

We stopped in for a cider tasting on a weekday mid-afternoon in early June and it was pretty quiet…read moreso we had no wait. Staff were amazing and enthusiastically shared information about the ciders. I love that they use apples and other ingredients from Washington Island- hence the name of the business! They are doing some creative things here, and the lavender and hops varieties were particularly unique and I enjoyed both. All their ciders are dry which we loved and the fermentation process they use produces a light carbonation. I really like how they do the flights in an ala-carte pricing structure which lets customers truly create a fully customized flight vs getting locked into one tier of choices. We bought a bottle to take home as a gift and also noticed the packaged options of local snacks if people want to have some cheese and crackers or similar to go with their cider. We are officially adding Orchard Island Cider to our spots to return to on our next vacation here in Door County!

Parking was a little confusing. We got a spot and had to figure out how to find the entrance to the store. We finally find it and we go and walk in. And the man was like what are you doing. We are not open. You need to leave. I had started looking around as this is said. Ok I get it you're not open. I did not realize this as the door was unlocked and I was able to enter. I was on vacation so I truly was not watching a clock. I was just excited to be in the store. Then I realized they have 15 minutes. Now mind you it was two staff. And if this was my small business I would have said something to the effect of we are not open yet but if you like you can look around and we will be able to assist you after we open. But please browse around. This is a sale they lost for the rudeness displayed. They did have the door open. We also were able to ward off another couple trying to find the place and who parked on the far side. They also were able to leave and not be rude before this happened. In a small town with a local business I do hate to make post like this. But it I was spoken to in such a rude tone and was very upset by this. It was very disrespectful in the words he chose and the tone he used. And I was saddened by the loss of this opportunity I had planned on having on my vacation.

We took our chances given our tight timing and did not pre-order anything, and they fortunately did have a couple of fresh cherry pies left, so we bought one of those. Pies are now $19.99 and still a great value for the quality. Other than that, nothing's changed up here, and that's a good thing.
