We went to the new Baja Bistro location in North Beacon Hill and sat in the Cantina area. From the moment you step into the place you're welcomed by a beautiful and thoughtfully designed space with an amazing bar display and plenty of seating. The services was good but not great. It took a while before the waiter even acknowledged our presence; almost to the fact that we began to think that we did something wrong. We stood for a while at the from door waiting for some semblance of acknowledgment and indication that it was ok to sit anywhere where space was available but when we didn't get any sort of acknowledgment from any of the staff, we just went ahead and sat down. After sitting it took quite a bit longer before we were acknowledged and given menus so, that's why we thought that perhaps we did something wrong by seating ourselves. We definitely were not singled out though because the same thing happened to a group that came after us. Nevertheless, once we received service, it was decent and fast. I'd be remiss to not acknowledge that it was a busy bar so the server could've been mentally preoccupied. So, one solution to this would be to simply have a sign on or at front door that says "open seating" or "please sit where available" or something like that. Yes, bar areas are normally open seating but the setup here doesn't quite give that indication that it's a bar area, we thought we were simply entering the restaurant lobby and not the bar area of the restaurant (apparently there's a few entrances). Food was decent with large size portions but menu seemed a bit "cliche" and the flavor a bit "westernized". They get buns points for homemade corn tortillas but lost points for cold tortilla chips. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the chips and salsa are complimentary so, I guess you can't look a gift horses in the mouth. Where the food really lost points for me is the poorly executed chimichanga. The chicken in the chimichanga is a bit bland and the outer shell too soft with a noticeable lack of melted cheese. I understand there a many was to prepare this dish but, a chimichanga should at least have a crispy outer shell; otherwise it's just a burrito by a different name (which was precisely the case). Solution, don't pan fry you chimichanga, deep fry it...if you're trying to accommodate the health conscious patrons for this dish...don't, let them order something else and keep to the true Mexican form of a chimichanga. To end on a good note, while I'm not quick to return here due to the subpar food and there being better authentic Mexican restaurants in the immediate area, I would recommend this place to those looking for good drinks with beautiful decor and decent speed of service. read more

We were in Seattle for a few days for baseball games and exploring the city. We come to Seattle about once a year and we usually stay in a hotel, this year we stayed at an Airbnb for the first time in a neighborhood that is new to us. Our last morning there we wanted to go out to breakfast close by. There were not a lot of choices in the neighborhood where we were staying but Baja bistro was one of those places and we actually stopped someone on the sidewalk and asked him if they had any recommendations close by and he said Baja bistro was a good place. We walked in & it seemed like a small little place - I feel like there's probably stuff further back in that we just didn't see, and some interesting artwork on the wall. Once we ordered and got our food there was no doubt we made the right choice. The food was outstanding. Most of us had breakfast dishes, my mom had a lunch/dinner dish. All of them were excellent. I really like the idea of an authentic restaurant decor, however I don't think the food is Mexican authentic. The food felt uninspired, alright seasoning, guacamole that isn't fresh tasting, and gisado that was so moist that my quesadilla was dripping with caldo while I was eating it. Then I went back and the flautas just weren't tasty. It was missing something like crunch; it was actually caldudo. I think this might be my gay boyfriend #2 (GBF#2) and my 'spot' if you know what I mean. *wink wink* I've been here twice with him once for dinner and once for brunch. And being a lover of Baja styled Mexican food I had high hopes for this place and guess what I'd say they were met. For dinner I went simple like I learned to do long ago. A dry bean and cheese (on the inside) burrito with sour cream. I was informed the refried beans were vegan and I have to admit the thought of vegan beans scared me it really did but I went with it anyways. Guess what? Those were the bestest refried beans I've had in Seattle, and to think they were somewhat healthy for me. Imagine that! They used both Oaxaca and manchego cheese which reminded me of San Diego style food and put a smile on my face. I also ordered a side of guacamole for the chips which was fresh and tasty I was impressed. Oh and I had a pomegranate margarita as well and I'm not a fan of margaritas but theirs was good didn't have that awful tequila taste even though it was made with tequila, go figure. For brunch I went with the huevos rancheros. They were good, eggs were cooked perfectly, the corn tortillas could have been fried just a little longer for my liking but they were fresh and appeared homemade and the beans they were just as delicious as the night I had them for dinner in my burrito with my GBF#2. He doesn't know this yet but next time my GBF#2 and I go to our 'spot' we're going for happy hour because get this they have taco's (fish, steak and/or cheese and potato) for $1.50! I ended up at this modest little Mexican cafe one morning while waiting for my car to get done with an oil change next door. I immediately liked the vibe. It felt warm and really had that neighborhood feel. There was a happy family of three thoroughly enjoying breakfast at the table across from me and two friends, both left-leaning, discussing politics to my right. I ordered a cup of coffee and the machaca con huevos, which was served with potatoes, beans, green salsa, and corn tortillas, which were nice and warm. I just had dropped off my car for servicing at Lioe's and was headed for the Light Rail station to head to Columbia City for some breakfast. I was disappointed to see a sign saying that the station was closed and that I needed to take the shuttle across the street to get to the Mt. Baker station. Well, I waited and waited to no avail. Finally, I decided to look around for a place. Baja was the first place I walked past by. Deciding between Inay's and Baja, I ended up going to Baja. Baja is actually two places in one. It is part Mexican restaurant (Baja) and part coffeeshop. The Java Love Cafe is actually the name of the coffeeshop. While I was here for a Mexican breakfast, the coffee selection is fairly large and there is a counter of nice pastries to gawk at as you come in. I ended up getting a table right in front as the restaurant was mostly empty. Most of the items on the breakfast menu has tortillas as part of the dish. Seeing that is the case, I went for the huevos con chorizo ($7.95) with a cup of drip coffee ($1.65). The huevos con chorizo is basically a breakfast scramble of chorizo sausage with potatoes, refried beans and orange slices on the side. Three tortillas came with the dish and I placed the sausage, potatoes and beans in the tortilla, dousing it with some hot sauce. The entree was decent and plentiful. Very filling meal. I was even more impressed by the coffee. It was served in a large coffee cup and I doused with some milk. Some of best coffee I have had in a while. Not sure why this place was not that busy, I was pleased by my dining experience here. The ambiance was good, but the sunshine outside also helped. I've always drove past this place to and from work and wondered if it is any good.... The salsa is tasty and it does have a little hint of spice to it. I ordered the chicken enchilada which is a suggested must try by past reviewers. I would say it is decent. The sauce over the enchiladas were more watery than what I'm used to. My coworker ended up ordering the beef torta and it is delicious! Next time, I will order the beef torta instead of the chicken enchilada. The food took about 15 minutes to arrive at our table. Tried this place for the first time this morning. I lived in Mexico for 10 weeks in 2010 so I was looking forward to some authentic, delicious food. The chilaquiles were pretty yummy, but not quite what I was used to. The corn tortillas are incredibly fresh and made by hand. However, the salsa roja had too much tomato and not enough chile. I enjoyed the cozy neighborhood atmosphere. The staff was friendly and apologetic that the espresso machine was broken (which meant no lattes, hot chocolate or tea). Prices are moderate and very reasonable (chilaquiles are less that $7). This is a great place to go if you're not in a hurry and want some fresh, comforting Mexican food. For years I had meant to try this place but it wasn't until a friend recommended it that I finally gave it a try. My husband and I came for dinner on a warm summer night and sat outside - outdoor seating is the first plus! I miss living down the street from Baja Bistro. When I lived in China Town, this was my go to spot. Having just moved here this year from Texas, I was looking for a good establishment that served delicious breakfast foods. I came here and was very satisfied. I've tried almost everything on their breakfast menu and nothing from the lunch and dinner menu. Their hotcakes are very good, their migas spectacular, their coffee delicious, and the service here is always friendly. My only complaint is that sometimes theirs flies here but it's probable from them leaving the door and windows open to let in the fresh air. I hear the dinner and lunch menu is great but I'm a breakfast guy so... I only wish his place was open 24 hours, then I'd make the drive from West Seattle more often. read more

My husband and i were in the area and thought to give this place a try based off the reviews. First off, if was extremely difficult to find parking, as it was all street parking. The salsa was flavorless. I tries 2 chips before I gave up on them. I ordered shredded beef tacos and my husband got a flauta. My husband took 1 bite of his and then wouldn't touch anymore. Had it packed to go to not seem rude, but we threw it away as soon as we left. My tacos were the worst I ever had. Very bland. I was given 1 lime that wasn't ripe and tried to drown my tacos in the salsa for some flavor, but there was nothing there. I ate half a taco. The beans and rice were non-existent with any flavor. Mexican food is my favorite I'm the world. I enjoy flavor, spice, authenticity, and quality and unfortunately dis not find that here. My husband asked the waiter for the restroom and was then flirted with by the waiter and made him feel uncomfortable. We knew this place did drag and are 100% ok with that, as long as people respect our own boundaries. $30 something dollars for 2 bites of chips and 2-3 bites of food that wasn't good was not worth it. read more

The restaurant is tiny and right next to a bar. We sat next to the window with the window open (it was a warm evening) but cigarette smoke from smokers outside of the bar kept coming in. The service was very friendly and informative. There was a family next to us that were discussing LGBTQ issues and one of the guys kept saying, in a loud voice, that he didn't understand why gay couples should be able to adopt since if they wanted to have a kid, they could just "do it the natural way". His other family member was trying to explain the reasoning behind gay couples wanting to adopt but it kept going back and forth throughout our dinner. Again, it's a small place and they were right next to us so though I was trying to enjoy my meal, it was quite difficult. My boyfriend, who isn't well-versed on LGBTQ issues, was uncomfortable too. The waiter did make a lighthearted comment to ease the tension (though there wasn't too much tension since they were a seemingly open family discussing different points of view). The restaurant has a pride flag displayed so I guess it's a safe place? I mean, looking back, I wouldn't expect the waiter to ask the family to leave (especially since the woman was trying to explain her viewpoints and discussion about these issues are needed for progression to happen) but it was just really uncomfortable for me and I kind of wish the waiter said/did something more than just a passing joke. Anyway, the food wasn't very memorable. The seasonings were different from what I'm used to so maybe that's it. The salsa was different too...kind of sweet? The recipes are from the owner's grandmother who was from a certain part of Mexico (Baja, maybe? I forget). Free street parking is relatively easy to find but you might have to walk a couple blocks. The omelets and the breakfast burritos looked good, along with the tortas... they've got 3 to choose from. The staff here is attentive and extremely nice and our food took no longer than 15 or 20 minutes to arrive. The Chilaquiles were delicious- I'd definitely order them again and the Huevos Rancheros were good too- the refried beans here are house made. They're also open for happy hour (which looked great- AND CHEAP!) and dinner. The interesting thing about this place is that it's a coffee shop AND a Mexican restaurant, so you can either get your espresso and a pastry to go, or you can stick around for a bite. Right now, they're offering a 'for here' special on their 'Rum & Egg Nog Latte.' I told the barista if they had the same drink to go, they'd be the most popular coffee shop in all of Seattle. Its Sunday which means its brunch day in my world. I bugged some friends into meeting for brunch this Sunday morning and one suggested Baja Bistro. He had been there before and said they had good breakfast burritos. I love burritos. Sounds like a place I'd enjoy. We get there and can't find a way to get in. The two doors I tried before were locked. We walked further down and found door number three open. We walk in to a child screaming about something or other. Aside from two kids and their parents the place was empty. Soon after the waitress appears and asks if we're here to dine in. I say yes and that we need a table for four. She points out a few four seat tables and tells us to take whichever we want. We find a table and are handed menus and given water. They have all my favorites: chorizo, breakfast burritos, chilaquiles...the list goes on. I couldn't decide if I wanted the chorizo con heuvo, the breakfast burrito (I could get bacon with it!), or the chorizo tacos. The dude decided on the chilaquiles after I convinced him of their awesomeness. After much indecision I felt the chorizo tacos were calling me. My friends arrived and ordered the chilaquiles and the chorizo con huevo. The food came and everything looked delicious. I bit into my chorizo burritos eagerly and moaned in delight. So good. So tasty. So want it in my mouth again. The hot sauce that came with it was the perfect condiment. It looked and tasted homemade. My friend enjoyed her chorizo con huevo and the guys thought their chilaquiles were okay. I had a bite and found them to be a bit mushy and I couldn't taste the egg even though they were included apparently. Still about the same...3-3.5 stars. My girlfriend and I had the chilaquiles here on the way to taking her back to the airport. I would say that the chilaquiles were just a little above average. Baja is always peaceful and the service is very good. I like their coffee and the atmosphere. It's a convenient location, and parking is easy to find mid-week. They tend to put crema (Mexican sour cream) or salsa on almost all of their breakfast dishes, and the chilaquiles really hit the spot. Brunch FTW! I have been here on and off for years, but I seem to always forget that it's a damn fine brunch spot, but it's BAAAACCCK on my radar after my last lovely meal. The service is friendly and laid back but still attentive, the food is well-crafted and as I hear from some friends from Southern Mexico, pretty damn authentic. You can't go wrong on the menu so what I ate and that I liked it is superfluous, just go, have a lovely breakfast and thank me later. read more
