Not worth $18 for two street tacos. After looking at the menu online afterward, I realized I could have gotten three tacos for $20. I wish that had been explained when ordering. The carne asada tacos were strange--honestly, the meat almost tasted like pork. There was no grilled or charred flavor, and the texture was odd, almost like it had been heavily marinated without being cooked over a grill. We also ordered the veggie quesadilla, and for the same price, that actually felt like a much better value. Overall, I felt a little bamboozled after getting our food. I didn't realize all of the tacos were street tacos, and when I asked questions, the responses were basically, "That's just the way they are," and "I don't know what we have for veggie options." Was I still hungry afterward? Yes. A little hangry? Also yes. 20% tip always... the tables were clean, and the person taking our order was friendly, so I don't fault them personally--they just didn't seem very familiar with the menu or able to offer much guidance. -- For me, the food simply wasn't worth the price. In SD for a conference and the Cantina is right across the street from the convention center and 2 blocks from Petco. Walked right up about 11:30 to order on a Tuesday and there was no line. I ordered the street taco sampler (because it's Tuesday). Sat out on the patio which is nice and mostly covered. Took food about 5 minutes to come which was awesome. The ribeye and birria beef tacos were awesome! I wasn't impressed with the chicken at all though. The chicken was bland and pretty dry. The big plus for me though was the street tacos were not loaded down with onions and cilantro. The rice wasnt quite cooked long enough for me and the beans were much thinner than I have had at other places. All in all a good lunch. I might try to sub out the chicken taco though. read more

So it was packed because we went on survivors weekend, so everybody was eating here, but the service was great. We got our food relatively fast and it was pretty affordable. Great pricing for good food. So I got the Beria tacos. The beer was nice juicy flavorful. I wish it would've came with a consume on the side to dip my tacos in, but it didn't, but it was pretty good. I also got the shrimp taco and I love that it was full-size shrimp inside of the taco like that's so important to like mention nice juicy shrimp flavorful seasoned well. Enjoy the taco. The beans and rice were both a little dry didn't finish them. If I'm being honest, they definitely needed something more. My cousin got the steak quesadilla and he let me try it. Nice juicy steak flavorful lots of cheese great pull on it. and you get a lot of quesadilla.. He also got the chicken taquitos with the chicken taquitos were OK. It felt like the taquitos themselves lack effort like they had decent flavor, but nothing special. We came here before a Padres game awhile back when this place was the Tin Fish and loved the location. It's great for people watching especially when the Trolley comes in on game day. As my first time at Baja Rick's I love that they kept the outside seating the same and now offer some wonderful Baja fare. We had the Birria Gnarly Nachos and a large fish and chips. The nachos were super big and very filling. I couldn't eat it all and took it to go and tried to give it to a homeless person but that didn't work out. The beers are abundant with two outside bars and probably one inside but I never went inside as all the action was happening outside. The staff I interacted with were very nice and attentive. A great place pre or post game right in Gaslamp and with the Hard Rock Hotel literally across the street, you can party all you want here and have a place to stay if so inclined. If you're going to see a Padre Game at Petco, this is such an ez spot to hit before the game. The food is just average, but, the atmosphere is fun and festive. Great bar sits in the middle of the outdoor dining. And, a fun DJ playing very lively music. read more

I cannot speak to the food because we only ordered drinks on the outside patio, but I highly recommend this casual restaurant in a great location. The outdoor patio is very nice and comfortable and is conveniently located on the other side of the train tracks from the Convention Center and on the edge of the Gas Lamp District. Bartender Nick is awesome. Not sure how much this restaurant is paying him, but it is definitely not enough. Not only is he a great bartender and very friendly, but his customer service skills are amazing. He quickly and efficiently greeted and helped numerous Convention Center related customers as they walked up to the restaurant. Well done Nick! read more

The Security and front staff there are completely rude. They tried giving away our seats away when we went to the bathroom. The customers there are rude too. We tried to tell everyone that our family members were in the bathroom but they continued to ignore us. They said things like "Well you already left" when we WENT TO THE RESTROOM. They tried to push through us to get to the seats where my niece and children were sitting, and the security there didn't even try to stop the two men. Like can we not go to the restroom?! The food there was horrible too. They served us cold food. The servers there were nice I guess. The security were favoring the customers, letting them sit in the "reserved" spots that caused me and my family to lose some of the spots we had. I really don't recommend this place because they don't know their ingredients. I'm lactose intolerant and I asked if it had any dairy. They removed coleslaw, but not everything dairy was gone. Yes. This is missing coleslaw, in the photo. It's a great view and music playing inside the restaurant. Staff is really straightforward about food selection and ordering was quick. Outside bar is awesome to have and you can order from there too. It was disappointing that my allergies were happening after eating there. It really messed up my mood. Got off the trolley to bar hop & dine at Gaslamp Quarter in Downtown, San Diego, CA. Our first stop was Baja Rick's Cantina. We liked the indoor and outdoor seating. The bar is near the Convention Center. We ordered a tall Coors Light beer for $10 & red sangria. My sangria wasn't the sweetest and was struggling drinking it, but Ivan the bartender gave me pineapple juice to make it sweeter and better. He was very accommodating and made sure I left bar with a good experience. Baja Rick's Cantina is a fun hangout not far from the San Diego Padres Stadium. Ivan indicated that during the home baseball games, the bar/restaurant has great specials on food and drinks. We'll definitely come back to check out the specials on game day! Watch out for their 5% fee to grab extra money from you. This is a good place for a quick bite. The restaurant is designed to get you in and out faster than in n out. The seats and tables are not very comfortable and packed tighter than an airline. The food is okay, everything is either deep fried or generously oiled. Had lunch here with a few friends. We ate outdoors. This is sort of self service. You go up, order, and they give you a buzzer, it goes off and you go pick up your food. I decided to order the hotdog. Just one I was planning a big dinner. Well let me warn you. It says on the menu a foot long. I was expecting a standard foot long. What they didn't tell you this was an ultra wide foot long. More like EEE WIDE than a standard wide foot long. It was more like four dog. It was a thick as a hefty Italian sausage. First off, great location right across from Hard Rock and next to the trolley & convention center. Their large outdoor patio is also nice with an outdoor bar with accompanying happy hour specials. It is a casual setting where you order at the front register, they give you a number and you pick a table. For todays order, it was chips & guac and the Mahi mahi fish bowl. The food arrived quickly and I really enjoyed the guacamole (flavorful and lots of lime). The fish bowl was ok, pretty basic with some light seasoning over plain rice and beans. I would say that this is an Americanized take on Mexican good which is expected in tourist areas such as downtown San Diego. read more

This place is a cash cow during Comic Con! Its always busy and packed, but somehow the line keeps moving, the staff are friendly, and there always seems to be a table open somewhere miraculously. I never eat outside of Comic Con, but its great during! especially the food inside the Convention center is gawd awful. $18 California Surf & Turf...a nice thick big burrito stuffed with Carne Asada, Garlic Shrimp, Cheddar Cheese, Jack Cheese, Guacamole, Pico De Gallo, Cotija Cheese, Crema Fresca. There are many restaurants that are here in San Diego and there are some places throw food together and with the service is the way food is served to be eye catching and the dishes should be eye-catching food was not appetizing for the customer. The Gaslamp Station is one station and the great location for the many eateries yet a place you can see that doesn't check IDS and to have an outside bar is one that spells problems to have open area. Going to Baja Ricks after several times I had seen the many signs and the advertisements that had advertised the many breakfast burritos that was something that many restaurants do in the Gas Lamp and the Broadway areas of San Diego. Going to the restaurant that had the looks of the many restaurants that you may find over in the Old Town area with the many with the many having outdoor seating and the Indoor seating. Going inside the main doors I saw their menu that was on the wall that was at the cashier stand I thought i Could get seating but having to order first before seating it gave me more of the fast-food feel. Looking over the menu they have inside with the many dishes they have it was hard to choice asking about their street tacos and the ingredients they told me they were very good I ordered the chicken and the steak and the beef with the side order of beans and rice, and one of my favorites the chips and queso. The total cost was one that got my eye to spend for lunch that was very high yet the service at the front was very rude and the tones they used. When the food was brought out to my table, I could see that they had an outside bar that sold and made drinks for customers that the person didn't ask for ID or card young ladies that came to buy drinks. My order arrived after 10minutes the typical times at the many restaurants that the server that brought the things out told me the things were very hot and the tacos hot also. When you serve food, you eat with your eyes and the way food looks you see if people will come back, and the way food smells it's one of the best ways to see if the taste and the flavors are the best. The food was one thing that was going to be good yet when you have chips and queso you have to have queso that is creamy yet the queso was like cottage cheese and the chips were half warm. I have had many tacos before but when you have tacos that are greasy and a mess that is not pleasing to the eyes or the palette. With one of the best dishes that can't be ruined is the beans and rice it was very flavorful, and the rice was cooked thoroughly with the beans that needed flavor with the dish was very good and the thickness was right on the spot. Baja Ricks located in the Gaslamp quarter with the 5th Ave Trolley near by the location is one that is nearby, and you can get off and get on to travel to other areas of the Gaslamp and the Bayside. For the Restaurant Baja Ricks its one location that has been several places before, yet the food needs to be improved and the use of the cleaning towels are not used to serve hot food to the customer tables you can get chemicals on people's plates. For a location that is in the Gaslamp and the location neat the trolley is n0ot to park your cars up on the sidewalk since there is not much in parking for the Gaslamp areas. As a Yelp Elite Reviewer for the many Spanish food restaurants this is one place that needs to improve for the food and the way it's served to be cooked and yet the food is not checked when it goes out. Food presentation and the flavor of food is correct for the many people is have return customers but if the food is not right you may not have customers returning. read more

I had the surf and turf tacos that had generous servings of meat and lobster -- and the tortillas were large, so I got full fast! Prices are reasonable, service was prompt. Tin Fish was the longtime restaurant that occupied this space which is the closest business to the Gaslamp Quarter trolley station. The owners of Rockin' Baja Lobster up the street on Fifth Ave took over and created Baja Rick's Cantina as the replacement eatery. The central location is terrific when there is a major event happening downtown like a baseball game or a large meeting at the convention center. Most of the seating is outdoors under the covered front patio. My visit was during one of the down periods in which no significant activities were happening. The place was completely void of customers. When I walked in, multiple menu screens were showing the regular offerings and the special deals for Happy Hour and Taco Tuesdays. Starters, platters, tacos, and burritos were the main categories. Molcajete bowls, po'boys, burgers, and sandwiches were the other items. Tacos came in a set of three per order and were served on flour tortillas. They ranged from $14 for street size to $23 for lobster. I selected the Fish Taco Sampler ($18) which was one grilled salmon, one grilled mahi, and one fried cod. The cod was surprisingly the best of the bunch. The batter was light and fried to the appropriate level of crispiness. Compared to the numerous Mexican joints within several blocks, the prices were high as you can buy street size tacos for less than $4 each and fish/seafood tacos for under $6 apiece. read more

Food is pretty amazing. Lots of flavors in their loaded fresh-seafood tacos.. i had the salmon taco, mahi taco, lobster taco, and the blacked ahi taco..!! The first 3 I got at happy hour which is between 1pm-4pm and the tacos were only $5 each! Very filling portions for all the yummy toppings on them & their house sauces for each. The blackened ahi taco was only even $4 (each) and is served til closing. They have plenty of seating areas, inside and outside. The service so far has been a pleasure. read more

My family and I were in the area for Comic Con, so we were looking for a restaurant nearby that served food fairly quickly as we planned to line up hours early for a tv show panel later in the afternoon. I saw this was fairly close to the convention center, so my family and I walked about 5 mins to get here. As expected, it was packed inside and outside when we arrived around 1 pm. The line to order was somewhat long, but after 5 mins waiting, another employee came up guided us to the bar in the back of the restaurant where we could place our orders since the line in front of the place was getting long. We placed our orders, luckily found a table outside, and received our food within 15 to 20 mins - not so bad. We ordered the following (prices may change over time): * Butter Poached Lobster Taco ($11) * Birria Grilled Cheese ($17) * The Epic Chicken Burrito ($18) * Food: I had the Birria Grilled Cheese, which was pretty good. It came with waffle fries, which was ok, and the portion size was perfect for me - not too big but not too small. It consisted of very flavorful beef birria, grilled onions, two cheeses, and a sauce that all blended well in between grilled Texas toast slices. I would get this again. My siblings had the other dishes listed above and were a bit disappointed with their dishes as the lobster taco was just 1 taco with no side (kinda small), and the tortilla used for the burrito was a bit chewy and thick. I shared a piece of my dish with both of them to try, and they wished they ordered mine instead. * Service: Everyone we interacted with was nice. No complaints here. * Ambiance: The seating area outside was a little cramped as tables were a bit packed, but we still had decent space between our table and others near us. It was a bit noisy as the TVs inside and outside the restaurant were broadcasting the Olympics, and people were cheering loudly. Also, there were people on the street nearby handing out flyers for local businesses calling out for attention, a passing parade of cosplaying Deadpools riding on unicorns, and an offsite activation right next to the outside seating area so lots going on during Comic Con weekend. Overall, I was satisfied with the food and pleased with the fact that we were served fairly quickly as I anticipated it to be much longer. We had more than enough time to eat comfortably, check out some outside activities on the way to the panels' location at the Hilton by the Bay, and make it early for the panel we wanted to see. If I'm lucky enough to come back again next year, I'd come back here for sure. read more
