Visited El Chingon Badass Mexican for a night out clubbing and overall it was a mixed 3-star experience. The vibe at night is definitely more of a club scene--loud music, packed dance floor, and a high-energy crowd, so if that's what you're going for, it delivers on the atmosphere. It's a fun spot to go out with friends and just enjoy the night. That said, we went expecting some food, but there wasn't any food being served when we were there, which was a bit disappointing. For a place that also markets itself as a Mexican restaurant, that part felt like it was missing during the club hours. Overall, good energy for nightlife, but not fully what we were hoping for that night.

I came here on Memorial Day Monday. There was a decent crowd, but it wasn't nearly as packed as it usually is. Most nights, you're practically shoulder to shoulder with people, so it was nice having a little extra room to move around. The service was awesome, as always. It didn't take long at all to get our drinks, and the staff were all friendly. We sat upstairs near the DJ booth, which is one of my favorite spots in the venue. It's spacious and a great place to overlook the crowd and people-watch. The DJs always do a fantastic job playing a mix of music that, and the crowd is consistently fun with a great vibe. If you're looking for a place to party, this is definitely one of the go-to spots. The customer service is excellent, the staff are welcoming, and even the bouncers are friendly and professional. Overall, it's always a great time whenever I visit.

Man I wish I lived in San Diego - I'd be here all the time. Randomly walked into this spot before WWE Survivor Series at Petco and this place is awesome. First off - let's talk about the staff. I have a little over four years sober. From my seat I could see the bar (which doesn't trigger me) and there was a fellow wrestling fan drinking alone. He left to use the restroom I assume and the bartender covered his drink. This tells me they hire quality people who care about their patrons - much respect. The food was amazing. I had the surf and turf burrito and holy smokes it was HUGE. It was also delicious. The steak was really great and cut up to not overwhelm the healthy portions of shrimp. I also got to try a bite of the Mexican Cuban and it was epic. Fusion done right Props as well for lots of complimentary chips and salsa and two types of salsa that were quality, This place is awesome - very much recommended it if you find yourself in the Gaslamp.

Came here for a quick bite and some drinks and we were pleasantly surprised! We were sat pretty quickly since they weren't that busy and our server checked on us pretty frequently until they got busier but that's understandable. The interior design of the restaurant was super cool and seems like it could be a fun time at night! For drinks we got the margarita and a skinny spicy margarita. Both were pretty good! For food we got the rolled tacos and the elote. The rolled tacos were good, nothing crazy, but the elote was sooo delicious! The salsa that came with the chips were also yummy with a good hint of spice.

Gaslamp is a nice area to go to. This place caught our eyes, so we decided to check it out in the a.m. the food was pretty cool and the ambiance.

Proper el pastor (con piña!), great HH prices, quality desserts and friendly service make this a worthy Gaslamp go to. From the start, Sergio raised the bar on great service with his kind demeanor and attentiveness. The HH (3-6 pm) deals are dirt cheap, with most items only $4-6. Companion really liked the al pastor tacos, while my $4 elote cup was just so so. However, the dessert made up for it as the flan was a big portion of wonderfully flavored and textured goodness. There were at least 5 other dessert options listed by Serg (not on the menu),which makes me suspect that they might share a dessert section with Havana 1920 next door.

Excellent service at El Chingon restaurant! We were greeted and promptly seated! The front door hostess was very friendly! The waitress was also great! She made some fantastic food and drink recommendations, which we really enjoyed! It's a nice place to sit down and enjoy a great drink and of course, the tacos!!

Solid food and a party atmosphere, I've always seen this place with a line out the door and for good reason! The drinks were absolutely delicious (I LOVED the Avenida revolucion, it was like a tequila pina colada) and salsa was 10/10. Our tacos and burrito were fine, nothing crazy, but the quesabirria empanada was unique and delicious! Definitely recommend coming here for drinks and apps!

Ask the Community - El Chingon Bad Ass Mexican

Is there live music or DJ on Sunday nights?

Yes! We have live DJs starting at noon and playing until last call. We’ll see you this Sunday!

At what time does it become 21 and over?

The restaurant and bar inside do require and ID to enter the restaurant because the restaurant serves alcohol and those that are over 21 are allowed inside. Many restaurants they do check for IDs and with other restaurants they do check for IDs.

    Do they accept reservations?

    No, they don't

Can they accept parties of 35 or more?

I would think so. The space is large enough.

I left a message earlier to see if we left our debit card there. If we lived within the county, would stop by but over 2 hours away. I have tried the operator lines, no answer. Is there a way to speak to a live person?

If you can call the morning team (10am onward) they answer and will be happy to help you! At night it is very club-like (very loud, dark, etc) and phones are harder to hear so they don't often get answered. :)

Best place to park within walking distance?

There is street parking and public parking available around that area.

Is this a football viewing place on sunday? Raiders bar?

Football bar yes!!! Big games always

    Are kids allowed?

Yes, kids are allowed. I took my 7 yr old & 10 yr old. The server was super friendly!

Do they have vegan options here?

Yes! The veggie fajitas are bomb. Fresh mex salad is also pretty great.

    Are kids allowed here?

Yes! Servers are friendly and there are tons of taco options, and great modification options to your plate that you can order for them!

How much is bottle service on a Saturday night?

Quite a bit, it is a very high demand club when it opens up but you will for sure have an option available if you contact a VIP host, as provided by the host that answers the phone.

Is there any type of table reservations?

No reservations were allowed when we went they asked us to check in first and had us wait 15-20min to the side until a table was available

Do I need to make a reservation ? Also can I just order drinks or do we have to order food with the drinks?

Reservation is better to avoid wait. You need to order some food, some apps may be! Only drinks not allowed

Are kids allowed or is this adults only?

Kids are allowed but it's not a kid friendly environment it's target market are more towards adults having good time with friends drinking. Hope this helps🙂

Can I bring my baby in?

    Yes all ages

    Are they taking reservations yet?

I don't think so, I think it's first come first serve and they take your temperature.

    Pet friendly? If seated outside.

Yes, the outdoor seating allows pets.

Are they currently offering HappyHour? Some restaurants are no longer offering Happy Hour because of Covid-19 for some reason.

    Yes we are on

Is it a club on certain nights?

Yes, multiple nights of the week it turns into a nightclub.

Does the restaurant validate parking from Horton plaza?

    No, no, no

Super dark and I mean dark, it'll take a minute for your eyes to adjust. Tapas style menu, we were a party of 4 and ordered: Squash blossom Relleno - it's the flower part of a squash plant and stuffed with mushroom duxelles which resembles a meat mixture with squash succotash. Outside is a corn tempura with a tomato base sauce. Pulpo-grilled octopus, one of the best texture and perfectly grilled skin with a chewy yet soft interior. The sauce has a slight kick and crunch from the corn nuts. Crab corn doughnut- this is their specialty and we were about to skip out but glad we didn't. The brioche bun had a donut batter with lumps of crab salad and corn mixture on top. El Festin- perfect for our party of 4 because it was a platter full of 4 Cheese quesadilla, 4 shrimp, 4 chicken slices, 1 jalapeño bacon wrap, ribeye. Flan-we should have each ordered one ourselves! Great flavors and texture, the top had ancient chocolate soil and had crispy corn nuts. Different but yummy. Overall, delicious food that came out so quick, great ambiance, we celebrated our birthdays and were each gifted candles with our names on the label. Truly amazing from beginning to end. Street parking only. The spots on the same block are metered but if you drive down to the second street towards residential, it's free.

Did as suggested, used an Uber to get there, didn't see any parking within close proximity as it is connected to the Lafayette Hotel and Club. Beautiful entry way, eyes definitely need to adjust to the darkness, lit candles everywhere; very church-like. The stained glass is beautiful. Tableware, tables, chairs somewhat Gothic. It did smell like candlewax, a bit overwhelming. Being able to see the open kitchen, was hoping to smell amazing dishes being prepared instead. I went by the reviews I read earlier, so we chose the Pulpo, perfect to share. Charred perfectly, tender on the inside on a spread of molè and bits of corn nuts, fabulous! Great presentation! Also tried the lentil spread, filling and plenty to share once again, tangy and spicy; our favorite appetizer. For a dish we shared the Chamoy bbq ribs, fell right off the bone; a tad salty. Corn ribs were tasty, wish they were fresh, a tad mushy and too salty. The pineapple Pico was just okay. We also ordered a passion fruit margarita and a Motomami, both were wonderful! Service was great, we were checked on often but then again it was a Thursday early evening and not busy yet. I would like to visit again and try other suggested dishes, when in town.
