I googled for a natural hair salon near my address in Peachtree Corners and found The Silk Bar. It had a good review and a beautiful website, so I was sold. Before, I went to two Dominican salons in my neighborhood for a consultation and just was not satisfied with the answers and service that I received. I understand COVID social distancing and even a minor language barrier, but I did not feel that welcomed at either salon. So I traveled right on to Roswell Rd. and I am so happy that I did! I was given a walk-in consultation and was warmly greeted by the owner, Patrice. Patrice is literally a ray of sunshine! She made me feel welcomed, comfortable, and gave me the individual service that I needed because I had questions and was in the market for a permanent salon. Not to mention, the salon was new, clean, beautifully decorated, and there was nice music to set the ambiance. The second stylist, Nia, who is young and talented, was slaying another client's hair; but Patrice brought me right in, sat me down, ask me about my hair goals and where I was currently in my hair journey. She explained to me how the Silk Bar has specials for folks like me, who want to be repeat clients. I was so excited to come back the next day. I arrived and learned that Patrice had written a personalized analysis for me and my hair goals! She provided products that were tailored just for my hair and scalp. These are vegan, sulfate free, and paraben-free products, which catered to my health-conscious side. Nia made me feel very comfortable and assured me that "it was my time to be pampered." She gave me the New Client Silk: detangling, a tingly shampoo with a little scalp massage, (where I fell asleep at the bowl,) blow dry, shaping cut, press, style. Patrice came and chatted with me and she feels like a long lost friend. Midway through, I just kept repeating how happy I was to have found them. I really felt like my hair needs were catered to. After our impromptu photo shoot, it started raining pretty heavy, so Nia pin curled my hair and wrapped it up. I purchased a hair product and received some free samples too. She can either blow or flat iron based on your preference. She does such a good job with the roller set that sometime I pass on any additional heat. I can oil my scalp and saran wrap for a smooth silky wrap when I get home on my own just to avoid heat. I suggest calling first because she does hair weaves as well and she's usually busy. The experience was acceptable, though hardly exceptional. I was surprised, however, to encounter a salon that does not even wash a client's hair before a haircut. Perhaps that is how appointments are completed in roughly fifteen minutes. The larger issue arose when my significant other received an unexpected call from her foot surgeon informing her of a last-minute surgical cancellation. While on her way to the procedure, she responsibly called the salon to cancel her appointment for that day. The receptionist responded rudely and informed her that she would nevertheless be charged a cancellation fee. Moments later, I received an alert from Citibank notifying me of a charge from Steve Hightower Salon. At no point had I authorized the salon to retain my credit card information on file. Naturally, I disputed the charge immediately. Later that same day, I spoke directly with Steve Hightower. The conversation was unpleasant, and his demeanor was unnecessarily abrasive. Nonetheless, based upon his explanation, I decided that I did not want the stylist to unfairly lose compensation, so I reversed the dispute. Several months later, I called to schedule another appointment, only to be informed by the same discourteous receptionist that both my significant other and I were no longer welcome at the salon "per Steve Hightower." Curiously, when I had spoken with him regarding the unauthorized charge to my credit card, he neglected to mention that we had supposedly been banned from the establishment. Professionalism, courtesy, and integrity matter in any business, particularly one built upon personal service and client relationships. Unfortunately, my experience here reflected very little of any of the three.
