While I was on an overnight stop in Baker City, this place was recommended to me by a friend. This is the quintessential truck stop diner. Super friendly and quick service, relaxed atmosphere, down home American style diner food. I ordered the chicken fried steak. This came with a salad bar trip, choice of potatoes (I picked mashed), vegetables and cornbread or dinner roll (I went with cornbread). I also ordered a sprite. I soon received a huge glass of pop! I went to the salad bar as soon as I ordered. It was just okay looking, but the salad greens looked nice. The salad I made for myself was pretty solid, but the pasta salad and the broccoli were not so good. After this experience, I started to get a little concerned about the rest of my food. I needn't have worried. The chicken fried steak (I ordered the large portion) was immense, dominating its own plate. It was delicious! One of the best chicken fried steaks I've had. Not tough, nicely breaded, with good seasoning and with a yummy sausage gravy! This steak was strong on all these points, and the vast majority of ones I've had in the past fall short on at least one. The mashed potatoes were another highlight! Smooth and creamy, they had wonderful flavor and were well seasoned. More of the great sausage gravy was on top of them and it was the perfect accompaniment. The veggies appeared to be what you would find in a can, but were not too bad. I was expecting them to be inedible, but they were alright. The cornbread was rich and moist, and the butter was perfect with it. The portions were huge, so I took a sizable amount with me in a box. Everybody yay I came into contact with was great. The food...meh. Although I was one of the only customers to have been seated and greeted and not have food, my order of corned beef hash and eggs took almost 15 minutes to be served. I could see the cook begging the counter. He was not busy. I'm not sure why my hash browns and English muffin were barely room temperature considering that they only had to travel 10 feet from the griddle to my face. But...I never had to ask for a warmup on my coffee. The locals probably love this place. I ate here once more than 15 years ago and it was great. I would give it another chance. read more

Hash browns were cold. I had asked for some cheese in my scrambled eggs. No cheese in the eggs, but there was cheese in the cold hash browns. Truck Corral has a lot of awesome stuff friendly customer service wise everything their management is not so good and they treat their employees like crap. They walk all over them. They treat them like they're just dirt and when it comes to customers, the general manager has no idea how to treat customers she talks crap to them. They do serve lunch and dinner though and being a truck stop right at the Interstate interchange I'm guessing they serve up a decent spread for those as well. I've eaten here for decades, back when it was just Baker and not Baker The City. Used to be a sleepy little backwater burb in the middle of nowhere. Now it's the big city in the middle of nowhere. Decent prices, heaps of good food. Nothing fancy. Just what an over-the-road trucker or a greasy Biker would expect. They also have fuel and various gifts, souvenirs and so on. I go there exclusively for the chow. They open up early which is greatly appreciated as I like to get on the road at the crack of dawn. I usually stay at the Eldorado right next door. We arrived with a party of 11 while we were on our way to the Oregon Coast and at first it seemed that they were going to be accommodating, but when half of our group sat at a table that had just been wiped down, they came back over to tell us that they had accidentally cleared someone else's table and forced half of us to move. There was no immediate table available, so we all just stood around awkwardly around the other half of the group that sat at the bar. After a few minutes, another couple left the bar area and we were able to steal enough chairs from other tables to in order to sit the group at the bar. Once we were able to order, we actually got our food fairly quickly and without issue with us surprising since we had such a large group. Our server seemed a bit rushed, but she did get all of our orders right. I would advise against sitting at the bar though since there is a ton of traffic in that area and it is just generally loud though. read more

Stopped in on our way to Idaho on a recent vacation. Not a bad place to stop, plenty of room for parking with a large rig and easy refueling as well, conveniently located just off the on/off ramp. We grabbed a bite to eat while here. The menu is full of typical trucker fare, I settled on the Philly Cheesesteak with fries. Nothing to write home about, but it's a solid Philly. Staff was friendly, which is a plus. The wait wasn't too bad, which also helps. The decor looks exactly like you'd expect from a truck stop in the middle of nowhere that hasn't been renovated since the 70s or 80s. All in all, not a bad place to stop when passing through. My god that is literally the biggest chicken fried steak either of us have ever seen. It is bigger than Black Bear Diner's "Bigfoot" for comparison. It was also PERFECTION. Crispy crunchy outer layer, so hot, tender, and juicy, the gravy was on point too. It could not have been better in any way. My catfish dinner was also the best preparation of fried catfish I have ever had. Huge fillet, flaky, and with a delicious crunchy crust. Place was packed and our server was very busy, but she still checked on us and was very friendly. Why not 5 stars then? A few minor details. Soup & salad bar was a mess. I was scraping the bottom of the pots to get what was left of some lukewarm soup. Minestrone or ham n bean, the ham n bean was better. Salad bar didn't seem sanitary so I didn't get any. Some of the serving tongs were sitting in the containers with the food/toppings, and overall the whole area needed a wipe down, and the soups replenished. The 5 star cfs unfortunately came accompanied with severely undercooked hash browns. They were not crispy at all, and they were not golden brown. read more

We arrived in baker city on our trip and we were excited to try this place. My daughter 5 took a few bites and refused my wife and I got our diners and we lost them before the night was through. The salad bar was slimy. Had a funny taste. My catfish was good but either the green beans or the potatoes were nasty and the cornbread has a metallic taste. Very nasty. My wife could not taste the honey mustard on her ordered chicken. Service was nice but something made us all a little sick.
