You would think that a state so deeply rooted in farming and community would have more people coming together to support healthy local food from local growers. It's simple, you pay a subscription fee of a few hundred dollars in the spring in exchange for weekly summer produce harvested fresh all summer long. For those interested there are a few CSA options in the area however Common Ground Garden is the best. Run by the Sisters and students at St. Benedict Monastery/University they not only grow amazing fruits, flowers, vegetables and herbs but they also partner with others to offer local bread, eggs, and meats. The quality and quantity of each week's share cannot be beat, the staff is heavenly, and they even offer periodic events and classes for members. If you are willing to learn to cook and eat locally and seasonally there is no better value than Common Ground Garden.

It takes awhile to learn to utilize the various items in the shares, but I've found that it gets easier with each additional year to adapt to the timing of various vegetables. Unlike the local farmer's markets I find the produce to always be fresh. Nancy, the owner, does a nice job of communicating the various ups and downs of farm life. Sure, there are occasional disappointments (for example, when a crop gets destroyed by insects and/or weather conditions), but that just makes me appreciate the overall wonderful quality all that much more!

Dang pandemic, I have not yet been able to take a cooking class, but once those restrictions lift, I will be there for sure! The options to get yummy, local produce here are robust. Last summer (2020), I was too late on the ball to get a full season farm share, so I got a once a month "grill box", which came with a meat to grill and a smaller assortment of veggies. How amazing those 3 boxes were. Over the winter, I also got a couple of the "off season" boxes, which included mostly cheese, jams, and other freshly canned or frozen goodies. I signed up for both the full season share and grill box this summer as well and have yet to be disappointed. TGA also does a lot of good in the community. You can spend a little extra and give a farm share to those in need, student shares are also available, and everything is local. The manager there (I think her name is Karin) is also fantastic. I have missed the pick-up window or written down the wrong pick-up date on more occasions than I am willing to admit and I always still get what I need. Overall, just a great business offering a great product.

She had signed up for their CSA program last summer and we attended an event there last the fall. They also have a commercial kitchen for rental for small businesses and offer a variety of cooking classes (that are open to the public). I don't really want to say this too loud cause it's my best kept secret!! I recently took part in several of their cooking classes with my daughter (of course)! I found both classes to be very fun and informative. We took a class called "Curry in a Hurry" and "Korean BBQ" both lead by Chef Yia Vang (owner of Union Kitchen). First he demonstrated a few things but then we set up in stations and starting following the recipe and cooking/grilling ourselves. Both were a really awesome experience. Chef Yia was always nearby to ask questions if we needed anything. I like how casual things feel and how welcoming the staff are. Can't wait to come back for another class soon!

The meat is especially good and they have all sorts. We LOVE the bacon and while the eggs are expensive, you really do see a difference in the taste and look of the eggs as you use them. My wife and I have been habitue's of the Minneapolis Farmers Market for decades. When the Market…read moreis open we can usually be found there every weekend. Over the years we have developed a number of vendors that we patronize such as the cucumber lady, the asparagus man, the egg guy, and many others selling vegetables and other products that you just can't find at the supermarket However, this year of the pandemic (2020), we decided that it wasn't worth the risk to go to the market in person. We eat a lot of vegetables and didn't want to give up local produce so we decided to participate in Community Sustainable Agriculture (CSA) program. One of the vendors we patronized at the Market was Untiedt based in Waverly. They are one of the largest vendors selling mostly local products at the Market and we particularly liked their grape tomatoes and sugar cube melons. Since they are large they have an extensive network in the metro area for distribution of their weekly shares. We get ours at Wagners on Penn Avenue in Southwest Minneapolis. There is the added bonus of a small Untiedt vegetable stand in the parking lot which we use to supplement our CSA box. So far we have been very happy with our experience. Every week we get a nice variety of fresh veggies. Since there are only two of us at home now we debated about whether to get the family size or smaller sized box. We went with the family sized and are glad we did. However we do eat a lot of vegetables. Quality has always been high. It would be nice if you could customize your order each week but I understand that the logistics would be unmanageable. We miss going to the Farmer's market in person but the CSA box is a nice option to have.

We started with Loon Organics in June 2009. We received a monthly box of fresh organic vegetables every month through October. It was excellent and I would recommend highly.
