With multiple calls and 1 1/2 hours later, I got the Baker's Crust manager, April, involved and learned the door dash delivery driver picked up my food but never arrived. April, though not at fault, stepped up and remade the order and personally delivered the lunch to my physician office. She saved the day and did a fabulous job representing Baker's Crust's brand! My wife and I used to love this restaurant we ate here many times and when family or friends would come in from out of town we would invite them to meet us here. Within the last six months or so this restaurant has went completely down the drain. The customer service has been awful the last several times we've been. We've dealt with extremely rude servers. Was planning on going to the Handsome Biscuit around the corner but arrived to a sign saying they were closed for a staff camping trip :) so we decided to try bakers crust at last minute. I'm not saying that I wouldn't try it again, I would. But it's nothing special. It's just average but probably reliable. I had 2 eggs, maple sausage and a single pancake, all from the a la carte menu, because I wanted a little savory and a little sweet without ordering two entrees. The sausage was good but the eggs, which I'd ordered over medium, were too runny. The pancake I just didn't like and was kind of burnt on the bottom side. While the price wasn't very high, I'd rather pay less for better (and more creative) food at a number of other places in walking distance. Or gotten the same meal at a diner for less. read more

So we decided to try this place finally for their pizzas and I was saddened by the quality and service. Pizza was not good! I ordered one margharita pizza and my husband ordered the Blanca his had cheese mine was bread rubbed with some bland tomato sauce. Our server was awful it may have been her first day who knows, came on a Monday night around 7:30pm it was completely dead it definitely reflects because the food was not good. And for what they charge for pizza 10-14.00 you can get better quality and more toppings at papa johns definitely. This was our last chance we wanted to love the place as its so close to where we live. I'm done with BC, take your business to Felini's on Colley!! Love this place. It's been so long since I've visited a BC...at least five years. I love walking during lunch because the sun is shining bright inside and the place is packed. They've been doing great things ever since I first dined some 13 or 14 years ago. I'm a fan of their soups in a bread bowl. You can't go wrong with their shoestring fries. The three others I was with today ordered salads while I opted for their turkey burger with bacon and a fried egg. Oh it was so delicious!!! By the looks of their salads (I've never tried) they look stellar, too. I probably shouldn't wait another five years before I return. The first time I went to Baker's Crust wasn't the best experience so I opted to not write a review. The only good thing was they let us bring our dog to the outdoor patio area. I decided it was time to have another go at it. I got the Country eggs benedict and Cream cheese danish and a cup of coffee. OK. I didn't plan on eating AAAllll of it .. but somehow I managed. Minus the 5 pieces of little crispy potato squares. The eggs benedict comprised of perfectly poached eggs and a tasty hollandaise sauce (though maybe a little more lemon would be nice) and an english muffin. I did not care too much for the country ham though. It's probably just me. The other components were amazing though. The cheese danish was good, too. It was a bit tough which leads me to believe it wasn't fresh but still .. not bad. The coffee was standard restaurant fare. All in all, I really enjoyed the food and our server was very friendly. Though the service was a little slower (and maybe we jokingly said they forgot about us) than we had hoped, I was hanging out with a friend and the hunger didn't hurt so much since we had lots to talk about. I've been here several times and have enjoyed most of my experiences, however the last few times I've been disappointed. So much so that I decided to finally take a picture and get back to my yelping! When you literally get burned on your pizza twice in a row, it's a bit ridiculous. Something is going on with staffing? The first time, I was willing to just chalk it up to a mistake and didn't complain. The second time I had a bad experience, the top of the pizza was burned, which was clearly visible to Stevie Wonder and the bottom was worse! Visited Baker's Crust after a very long silence. I didn't think I missed much, but I guess I actually did. Baker's Crust has a new menu; at least it's new to me. They also have a woodfire pizza oven near the entrance; when did they put that in? Ever thought about have a woodfire baked chocolate chip cookie with a scoop of Edy's Ice Cream? Well, it's on the menu! The star of the day was not that cookie, though, because I had to pass on that. The star of the day was the Charleston Chicken and Avocado; it's a Buttermilk fried chicken breast drizzled with honey buerre blanc with avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and honey mustard dressing on a brioche roll. It was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a while. I'll definitely go back for that. Everything else, I felt, was as promised. UPDATE Don't go here for gluten-free items (see previous review). However, I gave them another chance recently, this time for breakfast, and it was good, if very skimpy on the meat. I hate to give a bad review to the only restaurant I've had a good gluten-free pizza at, but here goes... They have a gluten-free menu, and the pizza is good, so props to Baker's Crust for that. On the down side: they do not have any gluten-free desserts; the waitress up-charged me twice on my hamburger with no warning and only took off one of the charges after I complained twice; the "huge" burger I was promised was small; waitress didn't bring me parmesan cheese/red chili shakers at first because she thought they may contain gluten...Train your staff better. Increase your portion sizes. Complete your menu. Don't charge so much. And then you could actually be a gluten-free chain I would visit more than twice. read more

Wow, this place just rose to the top of my list of favorite restaurants in this area! Desserts? it's all about them! Breakfast? before 11am! Steak? you got it! It's been difficult to find a place that satisfied both me and my boyfriend and I think we've found our happy (ecstatic) medium. When you first think of this place, you're probably thinking, "O it's just another high priced bakery with breads. How is this different from Panera?" Well dudes and dudettes, I'm here to get you off your fanny and into this restaurant. The first thing you will notice is that they constantly have customers coming into right up until they close. Then you will notice the display window of many different sweet delicacies including chocolate dipped cookies, chocolate dipped cheesecake on a stick (yes, on a stick which they recommend that customers eat in a manner that is not polite), deepdish apple pie and many more! You sit down with a crepe/bar to one side, pizza oven on the other with everything enclosed in a warehouse type setting. Sets the mood, doesn't it? As with all our first time restaurants, we tried almost everything. Starting with the appetizer, we began with the calamari. You MUST eat it with their sweet chili sauce. If you don't look sweet or chili, then don't order this because it's a must in order to enjoy this dish. Sure you can eat it with ketchup, but why don't you just order fries then? The bruschetta is aMAzing. The apple and brie is drizzled in caramel. You can choose 2 or 3 types to be served to you, but I highly recommend that at least one be the apple and brie. My main course with the ribeye steak. Yah, yah. Steak at a bakery? What am I thinking?? Ok, shut up. I was hungry and that looked good. It tasted good too (thank goodness). It's not like your traditionally cooked steak though. It's topped with cooked tomatoes with a drizzling of worcestershire (sp?) sauce. You have to eat it all together! The steak was tender and juicy and was much to my liking. They also have both sweet and savory crepes which I didn't get to try, but I noticed that many people came in to eat just that. From this post on, I will be doing a "..." for my favorite dessert places after I do a full review of the restaurant. Here is my dessert ... for Baker's Crust! .................................. Not sure why Baker's Crust only has a three star rating. It is really, really good. I've only been there for breakfast and lunch, and I've always left happy. They have great bread, pastries, coffee, entrees...definitely one of my favorite Norfolk restaurants. The only possible negative is that it can get a little loud inside. It's just one large room with hard surfaces, and noise can be a problem when it's busy. There's nothing wrong with the food though, it is great! read more

An American take on pizza Neopolitana. Bakers Crust specializes in brick oven pizza. Been to two locations in Hampton and don't really care for this location and here is why. Getting there from I-64 is a challenge. Traffic is always a nightmare. Once you get to the shopping center, the lot is always full because there are about 10 stores who also share the lot. The restaurant lacks AC, it's always muggy and filled with flies. The staff is hit or miss depending how old they are. We've had good service and bad service before. The pizza, different styles unique to the US. Just because it's brick oven it doesn't mean they are creating Italian pizza. I normally get the pizza marinara, not sure what kind of cheesy they use but tastes a bit off to me. Also the marinara lacks basil, and sometimes comes under cooked. I've traveled Italy and even taking my Italian friends. And they too think it's a different take on pizza. The only reason I'm rating this a three is because my family enjoys it and since I'm the one with the Yelp account, I was encouraged to leave a review. We prefer the Williamsburg location, somehow the pizza is way better and the menu is slightly different with better options. But don't take this fools word for it, if you are in the area stop in and post your honest opinion. read more

For the longest time, I would always forget that there was a Baker's Crust tucked away that tiny shopping plaza in Ghent. Once the light bulb went off - duh - we've been going there a few times a month. The food is always great - I love ordering a pizza and a side salad. I even had my whole family in town for a reunion and we went there for our last dinner together. They served 14 people on a Saturday evening flawlessly. Every member of my family was thrilled with this place - some even went back the next morning for breakfast! I love this place - great food, good prices, relaxing atmosphere, great service. Most of the food I have ordered has been tasty. Some dishes have been a bit bland. The worst experience was the roach on the coffee cup. We were offered a fresh cup but knowing there had been one on the last cup we all kinda lost our appetites. Until now, I had only eaten breakfast at Baker's Crust, so I decided it was about time to go and try their dinner, which is advertised on small cards and centerpieces on tables throughout the restaurant. Having always gone in the mornings, the restaurant has typically been very bright and inviting, but during this visit it seemed to be very dim and dark. For this reason, I opted to sit at the bar, because it was the brightest place in the entire restaurant. Aside from the absence of any form of light, the restaurant has a really unique feel to it. As soon as you walk in, a large wood fire oven greets you, along with a few people baking and kneading bread. Once you begin to look around, you almost feel as though you have been transported to a mom and pop bistro in the countryside of Italy. The tattered concrete slab floors and rustic plastered walls, revealing the occasional patch of bricks here and there, combined with the previously mentioned wood fire oven all come together to create this pastoral and cozy feeling to your entire visit. For my appetizer, I ordered the Wood fired Mac N' Cheese, which was marked as being new to their menu. This heavenly and delectable dish was a complex combination of Fontina and Gruyere cheeses mixed with bacon and perfectly cooked al' dente penne pasta, all placed inside of a petit, yet blazing hot, cast iron vessel. Immediately after having this dish placed in front of me, I could smell the intense cheese aromas making their way into my nose. My first bite was an explosion of flavor. The pungent taste of the Fontina and Gruyere cheeses combined with the salty and smoky bacon creates this unique sapor that sent my palate in to overdrive. For my entrée, the waitress recommended to me the Wood Fired Salmon with a side of Broccolini. After having such an impressive appetizer, I expected this dish to be top notch! Arriving in front of me sat this generous portion of salmon and an equally generous portion of broccolini paired with what appeared to be a baked lemon half. I gently squeezed the lemon on top of both the salmon and broccolini and the soft sweet pulp, which I would have been more than happy to have all by itself, came pouring out. As I took my first bite of the salmon, I could tell there was something wrong. I had ordered my salmon medium rare, which it definitely was not. This poor defenseless piece of salmon had been cooked well beyond done. Another thing that seemed weird to me is that this piece of fish had no sear or crust to it. Typically when you bake or pan-sear a piece of fish, such as salmon, it begins to form this crispy, savory outer crust that is full of flavor. My salmon just seemed to have more of this soft, bleak, outer layer that often forms when you reheat meats such as fish and poultry. While the seasoning on the broccolini was quite delicious, it too had an odd taste. It tasted as if it had been previously frozen. Wanting to give it a second chance, I tried another piece, after which it was quite apparent that this broccolini was facing a bad case of freezer burn. While I understand freezing certain items, fresh veggies, especially those such as broccolini that are available in the U.S. year round, should just not be frozen. Mediocre entrée aside, I decided to end my meal on a high note. What better to do so than with one of Baker's Crust's famous house made stuffed crepes? I opted for the Jamaican Crepe, which is a standard crepe, filled with bananas flambéed in rum and brown sugar, topped with toasted coconut and chocolate sauce, paired with a heaping scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and sweet, light and fluffy, whipped cream. When this plate first arrived, on the cold granite bar top, it brought with it this feeling of elegance and decadence. Individually, the ice cream, crepe, and whipped cream are delicious, but when paired with one another, these three ingredients come together to create this harmonious balance of buttery, sweet and vanilla-y flavors. The juices from the flambéed bananas are a desert all on their own and had me tempted to use the straw from my drink in order to savor every last drop. Overall, my visit to Baker's Crust was quite satisfying. While the entrée was not worth the $18 dollars I paid for it, the appetizer and dessert certainly made up for it. Every chef has a bad night here and there, and having enjoyed many meals here before, I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he was just having one of those nights. If you're in Norfolk, I strongly suggest you head over to Baker's Crust, yet another one of Ghent's hidden jewels. I've been going to the bakers crust for years. For the most part, my experiences their have been good. Most recently I stopped in to get some breakfast with my wife. I ordered the Baltimore Benedict. I'm a native Baltimorean, so my standards of crab, shrimp and other seafood dishes are high. The Baltimore Benedict was prepared with an English muffin topped with crab meat, a poached egg, hollandaise sauce and came with a side of potatoes. There was nothing overwhelmingly spectacular about this dish. It was warm bordering on cold and the flavor was so so. As I said before, I've been coming here for years, but the meal I had that day was mediocre. I could have sent it back, but I would have received a hot version of the bland meal. Their pastries, cakes and pies are awesome. I usually sit at the back bar and order crepes. The coffee, sandwiches, lunch and dinner items are good and all if the employees are pleasant. I will return again soon to enjoy some of the best food in Norfolk, but will steer clear of the Baltimore Benedict. My 3 star rating is strictly based on the meal I had that day. read more

This was my first time at Bakers Crust and I was truly blown away! The service, food, and atmosphere was top notch. My fiancé and I came here for dinner and we were greeted at the door and asked if we were first time guests (I was) and if we have any food allergies. I do, and was offered a gluten free menu that gave me an array of food options to choose from. The manager greeted us after our waiter brought us drinks and gave us a free sample of their tomato soup and chips. When I told him I was gluten free he even brought me a salad to try since their chips are not gluten free! My fiancé and I split their gluten free Mac and cheese, he had Asiago chicken pasta and I had gluten free chicken and cheddar sandwich. I could rave about the Mac and cheese forever! Love the atmosphere. It's laid back, but classy. Love the wood-burning ovens that are one of the first things you see as you walk in. Our waiter was very nice and helpful with the menu selections. It was my and my friends' first time here and everything just looked so good we had to ask for some suggestions. Anyways, this Baker's Crust is my favorite location. It's tucked into the back of a really cute strip mall (oxymoron?) and the whole place gets amazing light in the afternoon. The decor makes me feel as if I could be having tea and crumpets, but wooweee I'm glad I'm not. Breakfast is the best; I can't get enough of the hash browns. They're not soggy, greasy mounds, but crisp and flavorful patties of perfection. My mom, AKA the Omelet Queen, ends up talking about how delicious her Chesapeake omelet is with jumbo-lump crab and muenster cheese. The prices aren't tooth grindingly expensive, considering the products, but certainly more than the Pancake House. You can't miss this place, but don't make reservations, it's futile. My mom and I came in around 3:30 for a late lunch and there were two other tables seated with no one waiting to be seated. We sat for 15-20 min and no one came to our table to even take our drink order, while four teenage servers kept walking by and looking at us. Finally we were fed up and got up to leave and saw all the waiters sitting in the back at a table talking to one another. A girl came up and I told her the deal and she brought a boy over and we told him what had happened and if it had been super busy and they were under staffed we would have understood but that wasn't the case and he said " sorry we must have been distracted." Just completely unacceptable. I worked in the food and Bev industry for years and these new kids just have no work ethic and obviously don't care about tips. We went to Fellinis down the street and were waited on within a min of sitting down. If I were you I'd skip on Bakers Crust. read more

My first visit to Baker's Crust....definitely will not be my last. The overall experience was fantastic. The food is top-notch, the ambiance is nice (quiet - good for conversations, but not eerily quiet), and the service is spectacular. The prices, considering the quality of food, are very reasonable. My dinner date and I split an appetizer, salad, and entree, and the entire bill was under $50. Appetizer - 5+ STARS. Although vegan 99.9% of the time, I will occasionally break for cheese in times of birthdays. Birthday guy wanted bruschetta so we opted for two: (1) Brie with apple, caramel, and walnuts. Holy YUMMINESS. The combination of the slightly salty brie with the sweet caramel and the savory, crunchy walnut made this one of the best appetizers I've ever had. (2) Goat cheese with fresh basil, gently roasted red peppers, and olives. The combination of the salty goat cheese, slightly sweet peppers, and spice of the fresh basil made this one a winner. Delicious. Husband and I opted to split a pizza and split a salad. When discussing this, the waiter overheard us and offered to split the salad for us and brought it to us on two separate plates. (Very much appreciated.) Also, even split, the salads were huge. SALAD - 4 STARS. Ordered the avocado, tomato, and mozzarella over fresh greens and topped with balsamic. All of the ingredients were fresh, delicious, and paired really well with the balsamic with the exception of the avocado. Combined the avocado and balsamic had an odd flavor - to me they don't go well. Which is sad, because I love them both independently. I think the salad would have been a 5 without the avocado. PIZZA - 4 STARS. Ordered the Puttenesca. There were a lot of really great things about the pizza and a couple of not-as-great. The great: (1) The wood fired crust was perfection. Perfectly cooked, had a nice crisp to it and excellent flavor. (2) The pre-marinated tomatoes were juicy, spicy, and flavorful. Honestly, I'd have eaten a bowl of those given the options. Excellent. The not-so-great: (1) The eggplant wasn't done to my liking - kind of rubbery and chewy. (2) They were overly generous with the capers and olives.....the amount of those two very salty ingredients made the overall pizza experience a little too salty. I'd order that pizza again, but I'd hold the eggplant and tell them to go VERY easy on the capers. Aside from some very tiny, forgivable missteps, this place is a winner. The portions are huge, but the Wine Country Salad, which is $8.99 is lettuce, grapes, strawberries, pecans, pears and dressing. For nine bucks? Please. Baker's Crust is inconsistent. I've eaten brunch here more than a handful of times, and I keep meaning to come back for lunch and dinner...! The breakfast/brunch menu boasts a nice variety of foods, though I'm partial to the omelettes-- particularly the Mediterranean. The ingredients taste fresh, and the sides of toast and hash browns always hit the spot. I had breakfast and lunch here on two different occasions. I find the food to be light and delishes. Lots of balanced flavor. Salads are made of fresh ingredients as they should be. Crisp greens on sandwiches and in the salad. Nice selection of wines by the glass. I tried white chocolate coconut cake and it was VERY good - not too sweet which seems to the issue with most coconut cakes. I like the atmosphere in this locations. Quite a few people lunching alone at the bar area. I think it is a good place for tasty lunch. I am coming back. We went here with some friends for breakfast. This is a Ghent institution (although they have one in Greenbrier and one in Hilltop that I am aware of) and the food is definitely typical upper-scale Americana. We got eggs benedict and asked for them to be poached hard- they were still very runny. The grits were made with milk or cream so that was a bit weird. My husband had egg shells in his eggs too. Kind of gross but by then he had eaten over half the food and didn't want to look like a jerk by sending it back. The server was quite good even if the food was so-so. This is an easy place to go for picky eaters and has a lot of good Americana type stuff. Definitely a nice place to take the less adventurous for a bite. read more

Went here for brunch. Hostess was very polite and I was seated promptly. Unfortunately, that was the last time someone made contact with me. Two different waiters passed my table and even asked the tables beside me if they needed anything. I left and went to IHOP where they don't ignore their clients. read more

Just not good... Our waiter was impatient with our table and clearly annoyed that he was seated towards the end of lunch. He had zero personality and was walking around the restaurant like it was lazy Sunday afternoon around the house. My husband and best friend ordered sandwiches with salads on the side. I got the 1/2 sandwich, 1/2 salad. They ended up getting way more salad than me even though theirs was just a side. The proportions were way off. When we were ready to order dessert, we suddenly had a different waiter because ours apparently had an emergency at home (even though I saw him continuing to do side work). Our new waiter was friendly and I wished he was ours from the beginning. The only two people who provided acceptable customer service were Shay (spelling?) and Eric. We will NOT be returning here again. Too many other awesome restaurants around Ghent. If you go, do yourself a favor and ask for Eric's section. I can at least vouch for the fact that is is friendly and a good waiter. read more

Love this place, great service and fantastic atmosphere. Sat outside in 75 degree weather and enjoyed a great lunch. Had delicious fish tacos and a brick oven Bianca cheese pizza. This was very good, so if your in Norfolk, definitely give them a try! read more
