Dishing in the D came here on a Wednesday night, beautiful weather, doors open - and had a meal and service to match the lovely night. We had the group dinner - if you have six or more, they bring your group chips, two salsas, guac, queso with chorizo, salad and five kinds of tacos (chicken, mushroom, al Pastor, short rib...). The food was darned good, the pineapple margaritas were a big hit, and we had a blast. A good find, the foods decently priced. And our tacos came out fast hot and delicious. The margaritas come in a nice sized mason jar and are totally worth it. First time visiting. First impression: unwelcoming. No other customers waiting and the hostess gave us multiple reasons why we didn't want to wait for a table and instead of asking for our name for a table, she ushered us off to the bar. I might have been willing to give it another chance since the bartender, the margaritas & the manager were great. But the food was just ok and after 3 hours, never received the text that our table was ready (we were quoted 2 hours by Hostess of the Year & 1.5 hours by the manager). Ahhh - I LOVE THIS PLACE! It is such a midtown gem and has quickly become our favorite date night spot. I saw a few reviews stating the tacos are pricey, but I have to disagree. Tacos are $4 a piece and two fill me up because they are so chalk full of delicious ingredients. My favorites are the Baja shrimp, and the short rib tacos. There margaritas also blow every other place out of the water - they are fresh, and so so so yummy! My favorite is the pineapple! SO RUN DON'T WALK! You won't regret it. read more

Awesome place! Came here with a bunch of my girl friends and as picky as we are we truly enjoyed the food here. The service was great especially Michelle at the front desk! Such a sweetheart. Went there with my brother and frat bro before going to watch the BIG3 at Little Caesars Arena. Walking distance to the arena which was great. We sat outside which had a nice shade. Our waiter was excellent. I forget his name but he was also the bartender outside as well. The food was absolutely delicious. The tacos, the salad, even the chips and salsa was top notch. First time to Bakersfield on a Tuesday night. Glad we made a reservation! It was busy. A red wings game was also going on. The atmosphere is awesome! Loved the lighting and feel. Started off with a pineapple margarita served in a mini mason glass. Was pretty good. Had two. Went with the queso which to my surprise was not spicy like it sounded on the menu. Very tasty and def home made. Was not your basic queso in a jar which was great. Complaint... tons of chips, not enough queso for the serving. On to the tacos. Our table ordered 6. Served on a tray holder. As we went to shift the tray to put the correct tacos in front of each guest the holder got stuck in the crack of the wood from our picnic table. Plate tilted and spilt three of the tacos. The others were salvageable but our waitress took the plate right away to have them remade. Once able to eat the new plate of tacos , two of our tortillas split creating a mess and no utensils to eat the rest. There was only one tortilla with a lot of topping instead of most places with two. They were flour and not corn tortillas. Not sure if that matters for strength. They were ok. I've had better. But the portion of meat was great. I also ordered the side of cauliflower but was brought the corn salad. I didn't complain because of our already taco spill fiasco so I ate it. Was fine. A good side. Once we got our bill we saw we were charged twice for the spilled tacos. Sort of looked like they took half off the second batch but never was that mentioned and three of the original were not spilled. We just paid said whatever. I'd come back for queso and drinks but that's it. Our waitress was very attentive to coming around often. That was appreciated. read more

Had great pineapple margarita at the bar. Should have ordered food at the bar, when we got a table after waiting 1/2 hour on a Thursday night, could not get a staff person to wait on us! Had to go to the hostess and ask how we could get someone to wait on us. Finally got some tostadas and no plates to eat them from! I was not very impressed with Bakersfield as a Mexican restaurant. I was looking for a trendier place in Detroit and this was the only one I found. We went on cinco de mayo, so naturally they were crazy busy - a two hour wait. Luckily we found standing room and ate there without waiting for a table. The menu is small. They have some salads and a few dip/tortilla chips apps. The queso and guac and salsa dips were great, but the salsa verde was a fail. It tasted like nothing and was a watery consistency so nothing sticks to the tortilla chip. For meals, all they really have are a variety of small dressed up tacos and a few tostadas. The tacos were fine, I wasn't blown away with them. But if you are looking for burritos, enchiladas, nachos, Mexican pizza etc.... then this is not the place for you because they don't have these kinds of items. I probably won't come back if I can get real Mexican food elsewhere. read more

It's an amazing feat to pull the best parking spot at 5:15pm right in front of Bakersfield on Woodard Ave in Detroit.! We started visiting there the week that they first opened to half dozen times thereafter. Like I said, the parking was awesome but that was the high point of the night and it was all down hill from there. See attached pictures I don't need to write anymore.............................. I gave it 2 stars because I am the consummate optimist and love anything in a corn tortilla and hope this was a one off and maybe, just maybe give this place another chance. But as my jaw starts tightening and in the hopes my tetanus shot has not expired this place really sucked. From service, to food to whatever else goes into a good taco joint. Those rusty tins with the cheap wax paper that I easily tore through mixing the acidic dressing of my salad with the rich iron goodness of that rusty tin probably is what made it somewhat flavorably. Great interior with nice big garage doors that open up when the weather is nice, I'm starting to notice that many different places in Detroit have a similar inside theme to this place. The menu is actually surprisingly small, they do offer you several different taco choices but I was surprised a Mexican place didn't offer nachos I think that was a first for me. The tacos are excellent I recommend trying as many as you can with a group of friends. Pricing is not bad at all too it was nice to be able to get a draft of modelo for 4 dollars, it seems harder and harder today to find a non domestic beer on tap for less than 5 bucks. The cocktails are pretty good and again some really great prices for what you get, again not very many cocktails on the menu but i'm sure they could make you whatever you wanted. Easy parking in the area ( for now ) but will see since its getting so built up now. Good stop if you want great tacos at fair prices. read more
