Looking for a breakfast spot and came across the "Bakery Cafe". And I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant is in older section of town across the HEB. As you walk in you are warmly greeted by the people inside, and you can seat yourself. If you have a smaller group you can set in the first section of the restaurant but if you have a larger group there is extra space in the next adjacent room. The ones taking your order are helpful in helping you choose your order. On this visit I had; "The Works" omelette, it comes with hash browns and choice of toast. The whole experience was great, the food was delicious. I highly recommend this particular place. read more

Absolutely terrible service. We sat for an entire hour waiting on our food, only for the waitress to finally realize our order was never even entered into the system. No updates, no apology until we brought it up--just complete disregard. We came in excited to try the place, but left frustrated and hungry. Nice servers but service was slow. Went to looked for baked goods to take home and saw it's a bakery. Ordered slices of apple and Pecan pies. Server took out the Sisco frozen pies out and put it on the counter to open the package and cut a slice out. Ok, so not made in store, but won't complain. That took about 15 minutes. Took my order and went home with my pie slices. They were the raw dough kind and everything was mushy/unrecognizable. We determined the beige pipe to be the apple pie and the dark pile to be Pecan. Appears where all the locals go. There was a line to get inside. We waited probably just 10 minutes for a table, which wasn't terrible. The wait staff was nice, but appeared a little overwhelmed. The restaurant is a little out dated. Could use a fresh coat of paint and replacement of stained ceiling tiles. The food was decent. We got the fried chicken burger, which was good. The fried okra was good and fresh. Was disappointed in the crab cakes. The menu said "fresh from the gulf" thinking I was going to get me some good crab cakes, was disappointed to get imitation crab cakes. Would not recommend this from the menu. Kids had the fried shrimp (not fresh from the gulf) and a grilled cheese which was good. The only conflicting thing is that the restaurant identified and named themselves a bakery but they had only had 3 options in the desert options. No pastries, fresh bread, or desserts. I don't know why the ratings are so low here but we had a terrific lunch. It is truly stepping back in time. The menu is exactly like the coffee shops we ate at as kids. If you want bistro food, pass on it, but if you like classic American comfort food, this is the place. The ambience leaves much to be desired, true, but it's very clean and the service is friendly and efficient. We had beef vegetable soup to start (serious yum) and a side salad (not so great due to dull dressing). Both the roast beef plate and pork cutlet were wonderful. Moist and tender and well seasoned. In all the years we've been to Aransas Pass and then on to Port A, we have never eaten here before. It's been around since 1929 and is right across the street from the H‑E‑B. So we finally tried it. Not bad. A good homey diner. They offer burgers, seafood (duh), steaks, breakfast (they open early), salads, sandwiches and daily dinner specials, desserts and some Mexican food. The dinner specials are $10.95. You get your choice of several entrees of the day with soup or salad and a side. I kept it simple: grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of the soup of the day which was potato. Both were good. Grilled cheese was buttery and the soup was creamy. The husband had a two filet fish plate with Cole slaw and mashed. Another good choice. Tea and coffee are reasonably priced at $1.59. So many restaurants have jacked up drink prices to $3.50 and up. Took my Dad to Bakery Cafe today because he wanted a diner-type breakfast before driving back to his home in Dallas. Bakery Cafe served that purpose for us, but it wasn't anything special and wouldn't get on my list of places I'm planning to visit again soon. It is a small-town diner/cafe, through and through, nothing more. Think simple breakfasts, black coffee, & burgers. Their menu wont surprise you, their dishes wont wow you with presentation or taste, it has a musty/old smell about it, & it may take longer than you think it should. I seriously don't know what took me so long to finally dine at the Bakery Cafe in Aransas Pass. This place was established in 1929!!! Our waitress was so nice and they seem to have plenty of workers! The place is very well kept! We went old school. We started off with an order of basic nachos...refried beans with melted cheese on top of light crispy corn tortillas and an order of beer battered onion rings!! Both were delicious! The onion rings were full of flavor, light, crunchy and sweet. Mom ordered herself a simple bowl of delicious chili and I ordered a Homemade cheeseburger with fries! Everything met our expectations! We have been here a few times. Food was ok. Thought we would try it again. First we waited to be seated as waitress were standing around waiting for something to do. The one that seats you is also the cashier and apparently no one else is allowed. Although after we were seated we did notice regulars coming in and being told to sit wherever. She took our drink order, gave us menus and went back to the front. Again, waitresses are standing or walking around but no drinks coming our way. A family gets seated behind us. Their drink order is taken, drinks arrive and their food order is taken. We still haven't received our drinks. I want to leave but my wife says to wait a little longer. We do. Finally get served. I ordered the special which was written on a board behind the counter. When served, I noticed it did not have the extra vegetable or roll. When I asked about it, the waitress said that I had not ordered the special but the regular meal from the menu. I said it is the same meal. It seams that just pointing to the board and saying I would have the chicken fried steak wasn't enough. I had to actually say I want the special chicken fried steak. When I go to check out I tell the cashier that I ordered the special. I was charged the regular menu price if 50 cents more. Not a big deal, just the principle. She asks the waitress about it. The waitress at the time was halfway across the restaurant from us. She announces again that I did not order the special. That was their last chance to keep a customer. Don't go here. Just don't. This is not a tourist attraction. This is a tired lil hole in the wall that doesn't serve breakfast all day. We waited about 20 mins for a table and only about 10 customers inside. Another couple waited longer than us just to be seated and told they don't have breakfast at 11 am on a Saturday. We love trying local diners when traveling and this looked like a great choice, but sadly it was very disappointing. The wait staff and cashier were very friendly. The food was mediocre at best. Cold unsalted french fries. Lukewarm country gravy. Canned peas for the side vege's. It's a bakery, so I was hoping for fresh baked bread for the sandwiches. No dice there either. They did serve chocolate pudding with the special which my husband seemed excited about, ha! I feel bad saying this because I don't blame anyone who works there, I just think it's bad food. I love a good diner, so my husband and I stopped by on our way out of a week at Port A (which if you're wondering - La Playa Mexican restaurant, Venetian Hot Plate were both totally delicious!) We both got breakfast (hear great things about the chicken fried steak but they were only serving breakfast). I'm 99% sure the huevos rancheros was just covered with Pace salsa that they added some onion slices to. Grits had absolutely no flavor - I had to add salt and margerine to them which honestly just made me sad. Bacon was sad, crispy with no flavor. Toast was fine? Husband got western omelette - vegetables were completely raw? Hashbrowns were somehow dry and stale tasting?? Coffee was totally weak. Dive in to THIS dive of homestyle fare! My first time in this tiny cafe that's across the street from the Aransas Pass HEB grocery. I sat in the far back at a table because I prefer to see who is coming in. They have booths next to the "room length" mirror. The waitress comes to and asks for what I shall drink? Tea. Sweet? Yes. When she brings the tea, I ask her, what are y'all famous for? After all, this little diner has survived 60+ years in business!! She lights up and says, that's our chicken fried steak and cheese burgers. I hopped on that one! I'll have a cheese burger. Regular bun or sour dough? Oh, sour dough please. So glad that I am a meat eater!! That burger was outstanding!!!!! It was messy, and at the end, the sour dough bun was soggy. But what does that mean? Well, little darling, it means that the meat was juicy and the vegetables were fresh and moist. I was looking around and noticed these waitresses; there were about 10 of them and the place is small, i.e. they're very busy!! The signs on the walls caught my eye and made me laugh. But the daily menu written on a small white board was a real tell tale sign (yeah, a pun) of pride to work there. Why? The hand writing was not a scrawl. No. It was in perfect handwriting and identical to the advertising on the big screen TV next to it!! I inquired to the waitress, Angie, as to who wrote it? It was Monica. So then, Monica came up to me as she was refilling table condiments and spoke to me about her educating her children to write good print and cursive for their future. Nice pleasant conversation with her. These ladies, and it was easy to notice, that they all got along well together and loved their job too. 45 mins and we didn't get to eat. My son and I usually make this place our stop on rare occasions when we want a burger but after waiting 45 mins and seeing two tables get served that arrived after we had been there well there's no damn excuse. Not even the lame one the server gave us about them being home style burgers. I realize that it takes time for good food to come out but I also worked the service industry for 16 years and I worked 5 star full facility places. So no excuses in my book I usually get up after 25 mins but this was a special time for my son and I. This isn't the first time it's happened and I'm beginning to think it's something against me?
