Just finished lunch at the Bakery Cafe in Aransas Pass and was very good. My wife and I split the lg seafood platter and a order of homemade ( onion rings #1 great not greasy , thin n crispy fish was lightly battered and cooked perfectly moist and flavorful. I thought was flounder but was tilapia " yuck" but this was very good! Two shrimp n two oysters both were good. With salad and fries we couldn't finish. This is a true old school, small town cafe complete with locals staring at you when you walk in. But it's friendly stares so all good. The Mexican plates--tacos, enchiladas, migas, etc.-- FANTASTIC! Someone in that kitchen is from the South South I think. Breakfast plates are equally good. Hash browns made just right. Eggs setup perfectly. Spot on. Great sandwiches too. Fresh bread and plenty of Real Bacon on the BLT. And BIG glasses of iced tea. Not the regular wimpy size glasses but big ones that can be gulped and don't have to be refilled every 30 seconds. This is a big deal to me and they win. And they do pie... therein is the bakery part. If you actually have room left after lunch or dinner then go for it. Drove down the road to this diner in Aransas Pass after the recommendation at the hotel. It did not disappoint. Had the cinnamon roll, which was soft and buttery. Also had one egg with my biscuits and gravy. Hard to mess up an over hard egg so need need for a review. Biscuits were soft and flaky with a mound of cream sausage gravy on top. I would have liked a little more sausage and black pepper in the gravy, but it was still a great combination. Bacon was extra crispy. I should of listened to the people coming out and NEVER stepped foot in the place. Heed my advice, JUST TURN AROUND. I walked in and the place was packed. A very friendly short server informed me there was a table in the back we could have. We walked back and grabbed one of 2 available (and very dirty) tables. As a server myself I get it, shit gets real when you're busy and sometimes ya can't clean as fast as the mess happens. I happily cleaned my own table, putting all my dishes in the bus bin and wiping it down. Another server walks over, grabs our drink orders, returns with out drinks and quickly grabbed our order. We ordered 2 pancake breakfasts and a steak cooked med rare. 45 min later with two hungry children, multiple tables have come and gone after we sat. Myself and the table next to me who was there before me still haven't gotten food. I've watched countless people sit at dirty tables never to be greeted, who eventually get up and walk out. Tables are sitting dirty for 30+ min. People all around me are complaining and disgusted with their food. At this point I'm pissed. I flag my server down and she informs me that the owner is here and points him out. GET THIS. He was to busy to come talk. We finally get our food, which was shit, when another server came over and asked if they can do anything to help. I said a discount would be lovely. She offered me 10% off. I pointed out that's basically tax. She informed me tax was 8.2%. Okay, like I said, basically just tax. If I wasn't in the industry I would of walked out at that moment. But I have a lot of integrity with things like this. I even tipped my server cause to an extent this isn't her fault. However, I just bought a second house here to and I will never come back to this place. Nor will I ever advise anyone else too. Your money and time are better spent at McDonald's, and that's saying a lot since I refuse to eat that shit. read more

Also, the roast beef (tough, salty gravy), salad, and cottage cheese with fruit (peaches still in heavy syrup, so the cottage cheese was swimming in it.) Stopped by for lunch while working and as soon as we walked in (party of 2) we were sat in a back added area, which looked like a place you visit in a nightmare. When they had plenty of open tables in the main dining area. We were given a menu and told our waitress to would be with us shortly. Fast forward 21 mins and no one came to our table. We saw 3 waitresses going to tables but not ours. One waitress would glance our way and never once approached and asked if we had been helped. As soon as we were grabbing our purses, 1 lady came up to us and apologized of the delay. My boss insisted we get lunch there since we were on a time crunch. Ordered our food. Our fried fish was raw and uncooked in the middle. I never felt so uncomfortable in a diner before. No friendly smiles just gazing blank staring from the staff. We hardly touched our food. First and last time ever trying this place. I understand customer service is hard at times but that staff needs some attitude changes and at least pretend they enjoy their job. My boyfriend and I just came in for breakfast and were blown away! This atmosphere is amazing! The food was delicious and the staff and customers were sweet as can be! "Bakery Cafe- This ain't your mother's cafe." "Actually, it's more like your great-grandmother's cafe, depending on when she was born." (my made-up promotional tagline) Coming home from our annual jaunt to Port Aransas is always fraught with peril. In the two decades that we've been making this trip, we have yet to find a great place to eat at on the way home. In much the same manner as a nervous boy leaning in for a first kiss, we often put all our hopes onto whatever restaurant we randomly choose, only to end up with a mouth full of flaccid vegetables and pulpy fish. Perhaps your first kiss was different? At any rate, this year we spied the quaint stylings of Bakery Cafe and decided to repeat history by not remembering it. Speaking of history, this place has been around since 1929! Unfortunately, the cuisine hearkens back to the heady days of dust-caked palates and the evocative imagery of descriptors such as "beef", "chicken", and "beef". To be fair, there was fish. The "grilled" fish was in fact pan-fried in a light breading, which served as an extremely efficient grease-retainer. I shall call this fish "griddle-fish". Griddle-fish could run its own advertising campaign: "It was a Luby's kind of day, all week long." At the crossroads of taste and texture, Griddle -fish simply refused to choose, displaying a bland flavor and a mushy texture typically reserved for thick slices of moist bread. Delicious. "Best Chicken-Fried Steak in Town!" This got my attention, and, in a moment of schadenfreude, I delighted in the certain superiority of my dish over others. Upon arrival, the C.F. Steak looked small but adequate, and I took up my arms and began to eat. My fork and knife sawed through the breading (ranked 3 on my proprietary 1-10 crunch-scale) and pierced deep into the bowels of the beast, finding a tough and leathery cut of meat. Taste-wise, the flavors weren't too far off expectations for the dish, but the toughness really affected the experience. I do believe that lack of competition makes this simultaneously the best and worst C.F. Steak in Aransas Pass. The fried fish fared better, displaying a golden and crunchy bread-crumb coating, though the fish inside was relatively fatty. My dessert of mixed fruit was straight out-the-can, and my reaction was straight-out-the-horror-movie. Do not bother with this option. Prices were high-average, and the service was scant but friendly. There were lunch specials on the menu that seemed to offer a better value. Like any perishables you may have from 1929, this place has not aged well, and I suggest turning your gaze, as I have, towards the not-particularly-bright horizon of the other Aransas Pass eating establishments. I went to the Bakery Cafe in ROCKPORT, and I will never go back. This used to be Ken's Diner. I love the one in Aransas Pass, but I will never go back to the one in Rockport. The appetizer came out after my meal was brought out, the appetizer is suppose to come out before the meal. I told the waitress that I did not want the appetizer, she got upset with me. Then I was over charged for my meal, it was over charged by $0.50 but it was still an over charged. She got upset that I pointed that out. I did not tip this waitress and then she really got upset with me, but I am sorry she did not deserve a tip. Yes I understand that waitresses only make a little, but she was very rude. The red haired waitress with a pony tail brought our drink and told us we were not going to get good service and that we needed to move to a booth. This place was referred to us by a friend who usually goes down to the Rockport area. The place looked closed when we went in. It is a diner that has been around since the 1940s. We stood around clueless like we waited to be seated. The manager ignored us while we waited. We finally sat down and ordered drinks. I am not sure what was going on but it took entirely too long to place our order. The place was not that busy at all. It had a typical diner feel. The waitresses were not overtly friend or rude. They were very curt. The shrimp were great. I thought it was a little overpriced for how many shrimp you got on a place. The salad had lettuce which was on the verge of being thrown out. The veggies were bland. You have to go to the register to pay, which was silly. The guy working the register double checked the waitresses work, which I thought was silly. I was overcharged; but, I was just looking to get out of there. I would have given this place more stars; but, the service kinda ruined it for me. It was ok at best. The menu plainly said, "Fresh from the Gulf." Yeah, not even a good frozen shrimp. The cook had our waitress in tears, before we even ordered. Our salads were filled with water, so the dressing didn't do much good, it all washed off. We drained it into the saucer, and had to sop it up with napkins because it was too much and spilling over the saucer. Redemption- Husband and I came in for breakfast this time! Much better than our previous burgers for lunch. I had the western omelet. He had eggs and sausage plate. Poor waitress ran her butt off, was waiting on half the front room, and got stiffed because people are buttheads. It isn't her fault they don't have more help! Please remember to tip, people. Every little bit counts, and if a waitress is running all over the place trying to satisfy customers and she doesn't quite get everything you need at the moment you ask, don't stiff her. Stopped in for a late lunch and was not disappointed at this "old Texas style" cafe. If you were born after 1980 you won't know what I mean. The chicken fried steak was great,round steak pounded to tenderize it. Cold, crisp salad was tasty, as were the fries and okra. Roll was a bit stale, but it was 2:30 in the afternoon. Who can resist a good ol' fashioned diner? We came across from the island in search of "stick to your ribs" comfort food on a particularly cold and dreary day. Bakery Cafe did not disappoint. We arrived during the lunch rush on a busy weekday, and as it was our first visit, we took the first available table we saw as the dining room was packed full. We sat in a booth close to the door, which I would later come to regret, as every time people came in we were blasted with cold. No fault of the cafe, of course, and I discovered two more dining rooms when I went to the restroom. Tip for next visit! Our server, Meredith, was prompt and delightfully happy to do her job--a dying quality in servers anymore and one that is much appreciated! I had one of the specials, beef cutlet, and my boyfriend had a bowl of chili. He was worried it wouldn't be enough for a meal in itself, but it was plenty, and he can put away some food. I had a view of the door to the kitchen and through the window saw "Chef Mike," which is a bit of a turnoff at first, but the only thing I saw microwaved were rolls.
