We went to the new Bakery Cafe in Rockport which was the old Ken's Diner. Waited at least 10 minutes to get our order taken. We ordered 2 sandwiches and 2 cups of soup. Soup came out quickly but was cold. Waited 26 minutes for 2 sandwiches that never came. We went to pay for our soup and told waitress that everyone around us was getting their food even though they came in after us. She said the go by which orders they can get out the quickest. REALLY? 2 sandwiches are that hard? That's crazy. So came back to work still hungry.If you go there order anything but a sandwich because they take forever. The waitress was kind and did her absolute best. She was apologizing to all of the customers about the wait for food. After 30 minutes, some of my breakfast came out. She told me they ran out of grits so they gave me hashbrowns (no questions asked.). I also requested my toast 3 more times before it came out. My hashbrowns and those at all of the tables around us were white. If you like 100% white hashbrowns, this is your place. If you like the cook to serve whatever he feels like giving you after you wait 30 minutes, this is your place. I will add a picture of their hashbrowns for interested parties. Service was terrible - waitress delivered food and was never seen again. Had to prompt someone to get our check. There was food on the floor and spilt syrup on the table which found my left elbow. The place was very dirty. We stayed hoping the food would take away some of our doubts. I had the seafood platter and my wife has fried catfish. We found nothing special about the meals - marginally adequate. Pricey as expected but the $.49 for extra ranch dressing on my salad was over the top. We walked in at 10:30 and there were NO tables. Came back at 10:45 and sat down. Didn't get a menu till 10:58 and then when the server came to take the order at 11:12 we were told no breakfast after 11. So we had to order lunch which was a hamburger and sandwich. Great and friendly service. We received our food very quickly. This is your typical local greasy spoon. They stop serving breakfast at 11 am. We got there just in time to order the ham and cheese omelet special and pancakes with eggs over medium. Pancakes were delicious and eggs were cooked perfectly, which is something we don't usually encounter. I recommend ordering biscuits with your breakfast. They are delicious! Omelet left much to be desired. Be prepared to eat because this omelet is HUGE- made with 4 or 5 eggs. Eggs were overcooked and bland. My mother bit into a couple of egg shells. The grits were nominal, nothing to write home about. The place could use a bit cleaning up but our booth, save the mirror, was clean. read more

We stopped by here on our way home after a great weekend at the beach. The place was pretty busy when we got there but thinned out quite a bit by 11am. The food was decent, but nothing out of the ordinary good or special. It took awhile for our order to be taken, and it took over 45 minutes to receive our food, possibly closer to an hour. When the food arrived we were told that they were out of gravy for the biscuits and gravy so we'd need to get something else. We decided on the french toast and were told they would make it snappy and did apologize profusely. It took another 30+ minutes for this to get out to us. We also had to remind the poor waitress about bringing us some biscuits that came with the plate we had ordered. Definitely, cafe diner. Their specials are great! All food is reasonably priced. I have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. I have never eaten anything that wasn't good. The only complaint is I wish the grits that come with the breakfast was bigger. Definitely a lot more if you get hash browns instead. Their cook knows how to cook an egg in any form. I know because I like to change it up. Sunny side up, scrambled, over medium. I do wish they served something besides breakfast before 11am. But you can get pie lol! Best coffee, and no it's not Starbucks espresso! It is just a good old cup of joe. Especially, after cream and sugar! Because that's how I like it. read more

I understand why locals like this place. I'm not much for great grandma's southern style breakfast any longer. My health is not what it was when I was 9. I can't have grease with my grease. They don't drain or even try to remove the oil or fat that everything is cooked in. I asked for hash browns to cooked extra crispy and brown. They came out the right color but had been sitting in the grease so long that crispy was a mere memory from long ago. My breakfast companion's hash browns were ever limper and the oil bath was still present, requiring many napkins in a futile effort to rescue them. Alas, but to no avail. The toast was soaked in a butter substitute of unknown origin. The eggs were cooked to order but required more napkins to contain the oil slick. Tears were shed as we buried them in a mound of napkins. A twenty-one gun salute would have been appropriate for the occasion and nobody in here would have been too overwhelmed. The only thing not fully cooked was of all things was the bacon. It was undercooked and partially raw. I would have thought that grease extraction from animal fat would been the norm. Sorry this will not be a regular stop for me in the future. read more

Staying in Port Aransas and thoroughly enjoyed lunch here! Delicious comfort foods like chicken fried steak and pot roast. We loved it!

It was delicious. The best place we ate while on vacation. We are going to be back next year and we will have friends with us.

However this Sunday pass 06/28/15 we had the worst experience ever! the cafe did not have enough food on hand, they had a party of fifty in the back room, we ordered and waited 45 minutes to be told there was no more biscuits, no bacon, the two tables around us had waited longer, when our food finally came, we did not have silverware, the waitress staff was in the back rolling so we waited another 10 minutes, Like I said, this place is 98.9% on time, I think next time inform the customers before you take the order!! give us a chance to decide to sit and wait or go elsewhere! We are winter Texans and have been in Gulf Coast for 6 winters. We move around and regularly try new haunts and eateries. Early on we found The Bakery Cafe. Prices are very low, food excellent and fresh. Yes, it is an old building down town, an old diner atmosphere and clean. If you want good food prepared well and pretty good service, all at very low prices ... this is the place. We have eaten here MANY times as a couple or group as large as 12 (yes it does take longer to serve 12 patrons but we are busy talking anyway). They bought the store next door, knocked a large passage between and turned the two into one larger eatery with bigger tables and a fine rest room facility. All I can say to those other posts is that it is an old fashioned diner .. one of those rare finds most of us look for. Believe it or not it is difficult to find good, simple, affordable seafood at a restaurant anywhere in the Aransas Pass/Rockport area. Simple seafood places have pretty bad food, good seafood places are there to hammer the tourists and are very expensive. The best fish dish you can find in the area is the fried catfish at the Bakery Café. Can't really say that about their shrimp and oysters. All the diner staples and lunch specials are good "old school" dishes as testified by other reviewers. read more

Let me start by saying that we made the mistake of going on 4th of July when the place was packed. That being said, I was VERY patient when the people who came in behind us pushed past me to take the last table available. I was VERY patient when it took 20 minutes to get coffee and put in our order after waiting 20 minutes for a table. I was VERY patient when it then took 45 minutes to get most of our food (my daughter & husband's food never actually came). The waitress informed us that there were biscuits in the oven. I saw several tables, that we're seated after us, getting biscuits. Our waitress came back 10 minutes later to tell us that they were out of biscuits and weren't making any more. At this point, I left because I I was angry and didn't want to cause a problem. My husband and daughter waited 20 more minutes to get sausage, which they were informed they were out of also. And for all this, they still charged us $30!! Ridiculous! My daughter didn't even get to eat and my husband ate my son's leftovers! The owner will be receiving a call from me I assure you. read more

Stopped on the way home from Port A and ordered breakfast. Daughter , grandson and myself had ham n cheese omelet special. Husband had sausage, eggs and pancakes. The omelets though large fell flat instead of fluffy and were toasty brown. The diced ham continually fell out of our omelets leading me to believe the egg part was precooked and the ham and cheese added later in the microwave....three omelets in three minutes???? Mine came with a hint of eggshell. Grits came bland and required my own seasoning which is actually good for those of us who need to control our salt and fat intake. The homemade biscuits were awesome and a generous serving of two was a delightful indulgence. Grandson and hubby loved the pancakes and hash browns, but the generous portions were more than grandson could handle. Our server was friendly, prompt and courteous. Bakery Cafe in Aransas Pass....DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY AT THIS RESTURANT!! Bought a fish platter. I left a full fish and a half plus the fries. All I ate was 2 shrimp (preprocessed-not Texas gulf as they advertise), 2 chewy oyster and a roll. I was supposed to get another side (which) I never got. The fish was not fully cooked. Oh....and don't expect to get decent service. One of the three times the waitress finally came by, I told the waitress and she only offered to take it back. Between the rubbery oysters, not that great shrimp and uncooked fish I was done. Texture of food doesn't bother me. BUT uncooked fish was just disgusting. They didn't even discount my plate for eating a quarter of it...left a message for manager..still no call. So...this is my public service announcement. ..DON'T EAT AT BAKERY CAFE IN ARANSAS PASS!!! Last time 2/10/12 we had to get our own coffee, ask twice if someone could take our order and when someone finally did we waited and waited for it to arrive. We went to the Rockport location, I ordered biscuits and sausage gravy with 2 eggs, over medium. My wife ordered a waffle and bacon. Her bacon was burned and her waffle was over done on one side and under done on the other. We should have gotten the clue when the waitress yelled at the cook "do we have waffles"? There must have been problems with the waffle cooker. And the waffle was only luke warm. The biscuits were good. The sausage gravy was cream gravy with some over done, dry sausage bits tossed on top. There was only enough gravy to cover 2 biscuit halves, so left the other two on the plate. Both my over medium eggs were broken on the grill so they served them anyway, hard and flat. When the waitress asked us how the meal was, the only thing we mentioned was the burned bacon that my wife left on the plate. She promised to tell the cook but didn't offer to deduct it from the bill. The service was terrible. The guy behind us told the waitress that he thought they were invisible since it took so long to get her attention. She told the guy they had a rough day yesterday so she promised herself today would be better. This place seems to be very poorly managed. I asked one gal (I think she was the manager) 3 times for the check and each time she promised to tell our waitress but nothing happened. I virtually always leave a nice tip but didn't today....sure hope these folks get it together or they won't make it in Rockport. read more

I have started eating here recently and have tried their chicken friend steak, enchilada plate and cheese burger. I really liked the chicken fried steak, didn't find it to be tough as another reviewer noted, I think the steak has to be beaten quite a bit for tenderness and maybe that was just a bad day....The enchilada plate was very good, I would suggest if you want flour tortillas you ask ahead of time as you place the order, otherwise you will be halfway through your meal when you receive them. The burger was good, it has that pharmacy burger like texture that is hard for me to describe, but I think it has to do with the type of grill. It was cooked well. My advise is do not sit at the counter! You will be ignored as all the waitresses seem to spend a whole lot of time back there and it is pretty narrow, so you will hear grievances, see rolled eyes, back and forth action, looks of confusion, but you will not get any service any time soon! I have discovered the busy days are Thursday and Sunday when they serve Turkey and fixings. Apparantly you need to get there early, because this last Thursday they were out by noon! I saw a grumpy old man stomp out because of this injustice! I think maybe they should cook more of those turkeys! If I could, I would love to see them make a few changes....First, I would like to see busboys clearing off tables instead of the waitresses. Second, I would like to see waitresses going from customer's tables to the kitchen and back....Everyone would be served quickly this way. They may have been doing this since 1929 and don't see it from the customer's point of view, but my husband and I sat down at about 12:00, and did not leave till a little before 1:00. If you think about this, by hiring more busboys, they would double their output by being able to serve customers quicker with food and drinks (instead of the chaos behind that counter I was talking about). If you can get the food on the table fast, you will generally get people in and out of there in 30 minutes! Everybody would be happy. Right now I see unhappy confused and unorganized waitresses and people waiting and hoping to get served in a timely manner. So to sum it up, the food is good. If you are not in a hurry and not starving go on in. If you are starving and in a hurry I suggest you go elsewhere. I myself would love to own that place! I would use that cool retro Bakery Sign hanging outside as my inspiration to make the inside meet the hopes and expectations of the customers coming in. read more

I have been coming here for years, since I was a child, so I am partial to this place. They do indeed have a good, warm breakfast and the prices are cheap! I love the fact that they do breakfast after 2pm, sort of a weird time but I love breakfast for dinner! The place has been around forever and is your typical diner. It is a seat yourself place, which people may not know because there is no sign or person greeting you right away. For dinner I tend to eat burgers, which are yummy, and also sandwiches such as the turkey club, or grilled cheese. I have had the crab cakes, and the blackened fish, both were decent. Sometimes the service is slacking and sometimes the service is great! Many of the servers have been there since I was younger, and I have seen some new faces. They have a lotttt of pies, many of which I've tried and they are delicious! Sometimes you have to wait a bit at the counter to be cashed out but over all I enjoy eating here. read more
