We absolutely loved this place before. I used to get the pozole ramen (only served on weekends), and it was so damn good. The service has always been great and the atmosphere is very welcoming, which is why my family and I kept coming back. However, I recently came back yesterday and was honestly really heartbroken to find out that my favorite items are no longer being served. The pozole ramen and the chicharrón ramen are gone, and to top it off, the pork bellies are gone too. Those dishes were the main reason we would come here in the first place. I had actually been looking forward to them because I was having a really rough day, so finding out they were all gone was really disappointing. No offense to the restaurant, but without those items on the menu anymore, there's really no reason for us to return. Attentive staff in a relaxed atmosphere. I have eaten at the Bakudan at the rim and this is the same great food but with a quieter and more relaxed location in my opinion. We were there for happy hour where I had a $5 sake mimosa which was yummy and came with a hichew type candy on top. We also had the honey Sriracha wings from the happy hour menu which had a great texture, crunchy, and spicy but sweet flavor. Last I had the garlic tonkatsu ramen which is always a favorite of mine and did not disappoint. The quality is good and consistent and would recommend. Both locations are smaller inside so don't expect a large place. My friend has the bulgogi bowl that she enjoyed and we ended the night with Mochi for a nice sweet treat. read more

Bakudan on Bandera.. A Terrific Experience Last weekend, my boyfriend took me to lunch at Bakudan Ramen on Bandera. It holds sentimental value to me as it's where we had our first date at the RIM. Celebrating our anniversary, we opted for this location to avoid parking hassles at the RIM and liked that it was conveniently situated off I-1604 and we enjoyed half-priced apps during Happy Hour. During this visit, I'd like to highlight Ava, our efficient and delightful waitress, who promptly seated us after a warm greeting from the manager. Ava's smile and attention to detail created a 5-star experience and she quickly took drink orders and returned promptly to retrieve appetizer orders. While, the Shishito peppers, Gyoza, Shimp Tempura, Sriracha wings and Spicy Tuna Nachos were tasty, I told my boyfriend that we didn't need them all. I must note that while I understand inflation, appetizers are becoming increasingly expensive, and should not cost around the same price as a meal and without the Happy Hour prices, I probably wouldn't have purchased them. While we enjoyed our apps, our meal orders of Garlic Tonkotsu, Gyoza Chicken and Spicy Shoyo Ramen were out within minutes. The added apps, while tasty were not needed as the wait was minimal. The food was incredible, and the ambiance, along with Ava's excellent service, made our experience memorable. This Bakudan on Bandera is a little more spacious than the one in La Cantera, but the service and food is on par. I have tried a couple of their ramen bowls previously (they're okay, nothing to write home about) and their takoyaki is usually great. However, my low rating now is purely because of my experience with their bibimbap stone pot bowl - it is a ridiculously hot dish with the server handing it to me with the warning "Please be careful, it's burning hot". I understand that it may be required for the sake of the dish for the pot to be that hot but the annoying bit was the fact that the food never cooled down enough for me to eat without burning my mouth. Also it did not taste that great, with the sauce pooling at the bottom of the bowl like a thick soup and making everything pretty soggy. The only redeeming thing was their takoyaki fries - the sauce on the fries perfectly emulated the taste of the actual takoyaki and the fries themselves were done to crispy goodness. My son and I waited forever for this location to open. He checked every day when he passed by on his way home from work. But, by the time it opened, we had remembered eating lunch at the Rim location a while back and not enjoying that at all. So, we just put off going to this one and went to other new restaurants that seemed to be popping up all over the place. Today, I was going to try a new Taiwanese restaurant on Bandera. When I got there, it was closed. I rubbed my substantial belly and decided that, since I was still hungry, I would give Bakudan a shot. I had not been seated more than a minute before a server came with my utensils and took my order for a Japanese beer and some takoyaki (octopus balls). Before I could even unfold my napkin and slam it on my lap like we older folks still do, both of them were on the table. The server was fast, efficient, and very nice the whole time I was there. Now, there were two wobbles to my experience for which I am taking away two stars. That is because both situations were pretty serious in my eyes. First, my beer was nearly room temperature. Most of my friends would have been bothered by that. My own preference has always been to let it warm up a little. So, it was cold enough for me, but not the average customer. That's really a bad thing on a hot August day. The second was exactly opposite. The ramen that I ordered was also served close to lukewarm. That just isn't what most of us expect for a bowl of noodles. I for sure expect them to come to me steaming hot. Okay... I already said I ordered the takoyaki. I am not an expert on them. I have only had them two or three times before. However, as I always say, I know what I like. I really liked these. The flavor was really nice and the contrast between the crispy shell, the gooey filling, and the slightly chewy octopus pieces was wonderful. The garlic Tonkatsu ramen sounded the best to me. I don't know much about ramen. I mean, I have my favorite instant brands for at home. But, this was only my second time to have it in a restaurant. I used the spoon to get a good taste of the broth before digging into the foody parts. It had a really rich pork flavor mixed in with the taste of miso. I thought it was very good. I would love to taste it when it is steaming hot. The flotsam and jetsam floating on the top was interesting. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to mix them all together or not. I didn't. I grabbed each thing with chopsticks and ate them in isolation. Some of them, like the fish cakes, had a very subtle but pleasing flavor. My favorite elements were the pork slices and the eggs. Altogether, I think it tasted as good as it looked. The presentation was really attractive with everything arranged in its own little place. I will definitely be back to give this place another try. I hope they sort out the temperature issues by then. I would really hate lukewarm noodles on a cold wintery day. read more

We started off with one of my favorite appetizers, the spicy ahi tuna , poke nachos. These are the best on a fried wonton with avocado, cilantro, onions, Serano peppers, and of course the ahi tuna. This time the wonton was fried a little too long kind of well done. But they still tasted good. I also ordered the chicken Katsu curry. The chicken is fried and again it was a little bit overcooked very fried around the edges. However, the sauce was delicious, the salad had a delicious peanut butter tasting dressing that went well with the white rice. For dessert I ordered the mochi one strawberry one green tea. Those were very good. Our waitress was friendly fast and efficient. We arrived around 11 AM on a Tuesday. The restaurant was almost empty and very quiet which was nice. However, by 12 noon, they started getting busy and the restaurant almost filled up with a nice cool vibe. read more

We have been waiting for Bukadan Ramen to open, and it's finally here. Now let me tell ya'...this place is located in a strip mall on the corner by Target on 1604 and Bandera. So you would assume it's a fast food joint, but it's more fast casual. It has a great atmosphere and is well-decorated, with Japanese parasols and silk flowers hanging from the ceiling and lots of Japanese artwork throughout. For a small joint, they've done a lot to accommodate a lot of seating, but I encourage you to show up before 6 pm, or you will have a bit of a wait. You can do takeout if you prefer your home ambiance instead. We have recently enjoyed the food and atmosphere on two occasions with a friend from out of town. On the first trip for an appetizer, we tried the Shishito peppers, and they were outstanding. Our friend had the Takoyaki and really enjoyed it as well. For dinner, I had the Chicken Katsu Tokyo Rice bowl. My husband had the Bulgogi Bowl, and our friend had the Spicy Umami Miso ramen bowl. All were hot and flavorful, and we'd all have them again. Our friend enjoyed it so well she wanted to return before leaving town, so a week later, we were back. She started with a yummy drink, the B. S. Punch, and it was heavenly. It tasted like lemonade with a sake punch. I'd have my own if I weren't on some powerful painkillers. For appetizers, we shared Karaage Chicken and Gyoza. All wonderful. For dinner, she had Tuna Poke Nachos. My husband had the Bakudan ramen, and I had the Garlic Tonkatsu ramen. There were no leftovers. We were not disappointed. On both trips, the staff was friendly and accommodating. They were helpful with suggestions and tips. My husband and I were at Target and noticed that this place is open now. We usually go to a different ramen place but I remembered loving the Bakudan at the Rim, so we decided to stop by. Service was friendly and food came out quick. We both got the Spicy Miso Ramen with additional flavor bombs. Broth was flavorful and the ramen egg was cooked perfectly. The portions were a good size and we both left stuffed. I knocked off one star because I asked for no bean sprouts and mine came with it anyway, so I picked them aout. Plus I feel that the amount of meat is way less than other ramen spots. We probably got a spoon full each. Regardless, the ramen was delicious and the location is very convenient. This is one of my favorite Ramen places in San Antonio. The homemade noodles are really what stand out here. They have a pozole ramen on the weekend only that is one of my favorites. The broth is always very flavorful. The staff is always friendly. They have beer which is also a plus. There is plenty of parking since this is located in a shopping center. The dinning area is a bit small so there can be a wait if you come here during a busy time. The one complaint that I have is that sometimes the music is too loud which makes it hard to chat. read more

We stopped by Bakudan because I've been dying to try this popular ramen spot, and I'm glad we did! When you walk in, the atmosphere is very cool, casual, and creative. I love the floral installments on the ceiling and all of the fun art on the walls. The staff was super friendly and catered to our big party with multiple kids - I know how challenging that can be! The starters we ordered were the gyoza and both wing flavors. The gyoza was so crispy and had delicious filling. The wings were probably my favorite part of the whole meal! The tebasaki wings were perfectly soy glazed, and the honey sriracha wings had the best balance of sweet and spicy. The texture was on point and cooked wonderfully. For my main, I had the garlic ramen, which was definitely garlicy - in a good way! I chose the bulgogi beef as my meat instead of the traditional pork and loved the combo. The ramen was solid, not the best I've had, but I would definitely eat there again. Next time, I want to try the bulgogi bowl! Will not accommodate food allergies. Who even heard of a vegetarian ramen having seafood. Was told by the server that the only thing I could eat was salad because of a seafood allergy. Well I didn't wanna pay 11 for leaves and an egg so they let me just be hungry while the rest of my family ate their food. The server handled things gracefully given that she can only do what the kitchen tells them but something is wrong with management here to not tell their kitchen staff to wash a spoon and a pan to make something so that they don't have to starve willing customers. So long story short, unless you want to watch everyone else eat while you go hungry, don't go here if you have any food allergies because they will not feed you nor can they accommodate anyone.
