I was at a beach house approximately 2 blocks away and needed cold cuts and mayo to make a sandwich with great bread that I purchased at Rye bakery. The sign outside advertised liquor and a deli. Oh great, my cold cut problem is solved! Well not really, because when you ask for fresh cut cold cuts they point to the refrigerated section where there are prepackaged cold cuts?!? Well to their credit, I have to admit the woman on duty was very nice. But, I was still very let down that they lured me in with their false advertising or old signage. Did I purchase the cold cuts? Well yes, but, only because I was very hungry and it was lunch time. This place is incredibly over-priced. I believe they don't place prices on anything for this reason. I was living close by and was in desperate need for milk and cereal for the morning. I kid you not, it was nearly $15, and it was quite ridiculous. They charge $3 if you want to take out of their ATM and have a $5 limit on purchasing with a debit card. I understand the charge for using the ATM but I feel $3 is extreme. I'm sure they think they can con tourists out of their money and assume if you're living in the Balboa area you can afford these things but there are a lot of college students/post grads who rent the beach houses during the fall and spring when the prices drop. The staff is friendly but it doesn't make up for the high prices. The only reason why I keep going back is for convenience of location. *Since posting this, Armit S. on Yelp contacted me to tell me I'm an idiot for writing how I feel about this location and goes on to be vocal about how people who vote one star are dumbasses in his own review: "Those 1 stars are from dumbasses who can't afford there own mistakes and complain about others who are doing their day when they themselves are the problem)." This doesn't make sense to me at all. I can't afford my own mistakes apparently (whatever these may be) and apparently I am a problem. I have a feeling this person knows the family who owns the business (a family I've never had a personal issue with) and likes to make excuses for their high prices. The worker William is the grossest person I have ever encountered. He is incredibly rude and offensive and cursed at my friend repeatedly. He took my friends real id and claimed it was fake, so we called the police and the police came and verified it was a real id. After the police left, he said he didn't trust the police and still wouldn't sell. So I guess if you don't have grey hair or in a walker ( or maybe not bc apparently they discriminate against disabled people, as seen in other reviews left), don't come here to buy liquor unless you want your id taken. :) read more

They've just remodeled the store a few months back to include new fridges and a great deli section featuring Boar's Head products! SWEET! I had the Fun Zone (pastrami sandwich), and my boy had the Wedge (italian meats, tomato, lettuce). The pastrami and the italian meats were delicious and high quality. Thank you for using Boar's Head meats! The bread on the Wedge (sourdough) left something to be desired, however. Next time, I think we will go for the rye. Solid sandwiches in terms of taste. It's really frustrating that they don't have prices on nearly any liquor. I figured out the hard way that a 6 pack of White Claw is $13.99 (WHAT?? Target sells for $8.99) but if I would've bought a 12 pack it's $19.99 (still expensive considering Target sells for $14.99). How does that math make sense though? The 6 pack comes out to like $2.33 per can, but the 12 pack is only $5 more for 6 more cans... the value proposition! Would be smart to let people know, if only they had their flippin prices listed!! Lol, instead you're turning away all the people who see that you're charging an absurd amount on a 6 pack and can only assume the same goes for all of your liquor. It's going to be hard to motivate myself to go back after this, even with how convenient it is. This is my spot to hit every time I come down to Balboa pier, a one stop shop for snacks, sandwiches, & libations. The main attraction here are there bountiful sandwiches made with the top-tier meats & cheeses, so I know I'm in good hands. First look at the menu and you can easily tell you cannot go wrong, I haven't so far. They give you heaping helpings of protein in every sandwich, so you get your moneys worth. -Pier Shot: Turkey, Bacon, Avocado. Need I say more? - The Wedge: Italian lovers rejoice! One of the few places that you can grab emergency supplies from near the pier. Cereal, milk, eggs, bread, even beer or cigarettes. It's not cheap, but neither is land here. Everyone has to pay their bills. To the other reviewers: If you can't afford the prices, then take a drive somewhere else, but don't blame them for providing a much-needed and popular service. Came to have a picnic lunch at Peninsula Park near the end of the peninsula and found this place to grab some sandwiches. It's really close and within walking distance to the park. There are plenty of special sandwich options and a variety of breads and cheeses. Got a turkey, avocado, and provolone and it was exactly what I was looking for. Just a classic sandwich place that really hit the spot. They also have a nice selection of beers and drinks too. I would recommend this place and come back next time I'm in the area. read more

This is the closest food/liquor store to my house so I've been here fairly often. The prices are a little steep, but I guess that's expected on the peninsula, especially without competition nearby. The people are usually friendly, but not aways professional. Previously, I've had to wait for the person at checkout to finish a personal cellphone conversation. Sometimes they are too wrapped up in their paperwork to help their customers. I would rate this place much higher if it wasn't for that awful owner. He is so rude that I always think twice before going there. If I'm out on a long walk, I'll stop in for something small because they're the only ones around. But I keep an eye out for his car and avoid going in when he's around. My advice to the owner: Stay away from your store when customers are present. Reading these reviews, I am confident you are costing yourself business. If you come by during business hours, just stay quiet and let your nice employees handle everything. read more

I wish I could give less then one star. The owners here discriminate against disabled patrons and harassed me about my parking in their lot even with my disabled placard clearly displayed. While being harassed by an employee I showed him the law on the California DMV website and they still threatened my vehicle if I didn't move it. OK, this is your ordinary sandwich counter inside a "convenience" store. I ordered a normal Ham and Swiss, and got a sandwich that was just that, an ordinary Ham and Swiss. For 7.99 I expected a little more than Ham and Swiss than the "anemic" sandwich I received, but then again this is a tourist trap and these prices come with the territory, but the locals may not support this "deli" if it doesn't up the game a little. The place is clean and they make a reasonable attempt to produce a sandwich, but they would benefit from studying how a real "deli" sandwich counter puts out the goods! Stay away from this place!!! I traveled to LA from Oklahoma with my niece for her 13th birthday and, on the recommendation of a colleague, we checked out Balboa Island for the 4th of July. It was so crowded we knew immediately that we wouldn't stay long. I pulled into an empty parking space in the lot of this establishment and observed the sign that the parking was only for Bal Harbour. There were no other posting regarding time limits or other requirements. So, I went in and made a purchase in their store; I paid cash and they did not give me a receipt. My niece and I then strolled to a few shops, looked out off the pier, grabbed a couple of slices of pizza and came back to find our car had been towed. The store owners couldn't even be bothered to talk to me more than to advise that I call the local police. The local police directed me to take it up with the wrecker service. Southside Towing (keep your distance from these crooks, too) advised me that a Bal Harbour employee called them to tow my car (a rental, for which I thankfully had the papers) after it was there for an hour unattended. I had to call a $330 "souvenir", I hightailed it out of there. What a scam! read more
