The Irvine Ranch Market is kinda a hidden gem. It's mostly a local place for people that live on the island. It's a small market with pretty much just about everything you need to make a meal or simply buy something premade. The prices are pretty good too. I've noticed. The staff is always friendly and helpful. In addition to the premade items you can order at the counter from a pretty wide variety of menu items ranging from sandwiches to Mexican to pizza. The hamburger is the most average thing I have tried there, but the french fries are amazing. One serving will feed most of your family actually. The chicken sandwich is one of the most tender and juiciest that we've ever had. It's become a must have every time we arrive for lunch. The surroundings are appealing and there are a couple tables to sit at. My kids especially love the drink selection. They've got just about every type of soda and drink you can find and many unique ones that you don't see anyone else. I know there's at least one more location in Costa Mesa and need to try that one as well. Recently, I tried the torta which I enjoyed and the vegetarian sandwich on squaw bread, I believe. read more

The perfect spot for your picnic essentials. I stumbled on Irvine Ranch Market during today's Balboa Island Art Walk. We had worked up quite an appetite after exploring over a mile of local artists and were in the mood for fresh sammies. This market was filled with all your favorite snacks, sides, alcoholic bevies, plus a sandwich counter. I ordered the caprese sammie with added turkey. This sandwich was stacked thinly sliced turkey, tomato, mozzarella, and balsamic. Tik Tok virality holds up. I have no clue why it's trendy on social media but it's a nice market! I tried the lemon cake and pizza, both were tasty though the pizza was a bit greasy. We love this market. We were thirsty and wanted to grab some drinks before walking in the neighborhood. But the "best fries" sign, we decided to grab some burger, pizza, soda and fries. Just for those battered french fries I would give all the stars this place deserves. Fresh, crispy on the outside and every bite was tasty. The market also carries fresh produce, pantry items, deli meat, bakery section and alcohols. They have few tables to enjoy your food but make sure to pay before dining. There are no restrooms inside the market and if you need to use one it is right outside the street (the public toilets which are well maintained). read more

We recently rented a house on Balboa Island for a week, and became daily visitors of Irvine Ranch Market! With two small kiddos in tow, there's always something that you need, whether it's more milk, snacks, fruit, etc. This market is well stocked and the prices are great for being a small grocery store on the island. We even purchased locally caught shrimp to make shrimp scampi at home, and they were incredibly fresh and delicious. They also have great grab-and-go options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I loved their pre-made chicken salad. Their tiny homemade chocolate chip cookies in a cup at the register were amaze, we bought multiple cups full. They also have a great selection of local beers, wine, and liquor + all of the mixers that you could need. So grateful that this spot was right around the corner from our place. It made this mama's life a lot easier on vacay! My family always had full tummies and big smiles. I highly recommend this cute little market! read more

It's difficult to have a grocery store in a section of a city, where space is limited and the number of customers can vary a lot depending on the season or day of the week. IRM has created the perfect balance of basics and gourmet items, needs and wants, necessities and treats. They've done so in a small space, creating an open concept and still having a great selection of anything a local or visitor might be looking for. Everything you could need on this tiny little island, just fewer options. Great ready made foods to go, a bakery case, produce. We were super excited for Irvine Ranch to open up on the island after Hersey's closed down. I heard such great things about the other location and I couldn't wait to try their deli. I ordered a simple turkey sandwich on French baguette with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and some pepperoncini. I get home and after eating about 1/4 of my sandwich I notice something black.. maybe an olive somehow got in my sandwich?? No.... a dead horse fly. Beyond disgusting. I don't like wasting my time complaining but I decided to walk back and let them know. The nice young cashier called the manager and obviously he had no customer service skills whatsoever. He didn't apologize but instead gave me attitude like I was inconveniencing his not-so-busy day. Well, needless to say I will not be back **UPDATE** Response to the owner... I have been living on the island for about 10 years and know there are flies in the alleyway. Every other restaurant off of Marine have those fly strips hanging filled with flies. I went to Irvine Ranch Market and came straight home. This particular fly was dead. In my sandwich. Unless there was a fly in my house (which would be impossible since apparently there aren't any flies on the island) that committed suicide and died and figured out a way to bury himself to the center of my sandwich... there's just no way.. let's be realistic here.. With that being said, redirecting the blame and not owning up to it says a lot about the owner as well. Store front may look clean (I sure hope so considering you guys just opened) but maybe check your lettuce because this fly looked like it had been dead for quite some time. Honestly, it wasn't that big of a deal until the attitude. Completely different experience with food ordering as the last time I was here! Different crew, too- hardworking and attentive! It was crowded right at lunchtime but I walked right up and placed my order for The Godfather sub. Soon after, my order was up! Only holdup is the slow man checking people out. The girl who took my order ran over and helped checkout when she had a moment. The Godfather was fantastic! Bread not as soft as Gallos but definitely not hard and tough like Moulin. It was perfect. Freshly sliced Boar's Head A+. Just loved it. Ate half yesterday and the other half today for lunch and it was just as good as yesterday- not grossly soggy as I would have expected it to have been after a day with the bread sitting in a tasty herbed oil and vinegar mixture. We were in the area for a long weekend visiting and found this store has everything we needed. Very nice, friendly staff. If I were a local this would be my regular stop. Lots of beer, wine, spirits. They have fresh produce. We did not get anything at the deli but it all looked tasty. Will definitely come here again on our next visit. read more

I've shopped at this store for 15 years. It's good quality, but you need to be careful. The meat and fish counter looks great, but sometimes the service there is poor --- I was there one time and it seemed like the three staff were all high on something because they made some inappropriate comments and forgot my request, requiring me to repeat myself a couple times. Also, the wine has informational labels showing high ratings for that winery, but the ratings are usually for a year that they are not selling, making it an issue of false-advertising. Check this for yourself and you will see what I'm talking about. Lastly, I bought house-made (?) Tapenade at this store several times over the years and twice there were pieces of olive pits in the mixture and I cracked my teeth (one time I needed a dental filling) on the broken pits --- so I won't buy tapenade at this store again.. --- I'm being specific, because I don't like leaving a mediocre review. Nevertheless, I think this store should step up their service a bit. read more

Everyone is focused on cleaning and preparing to CLOSE. Someone finally come from the rear and says "do you need help" I say yes and announce my order. She say grill and sandwiches close at 6,:00. Really love this market and I'm super pleased 99% of the time. The turkey meatballs in the grab-and-go section were awfully chewy. They tasted like they were stuck together with glue and they were really dry. I had to toss them out in the trash. I won't be buying the turkey meatballs again. read more

Now I go to get my staples. Being able to walk to a NICE & clean store is so amazing and worth paying a little more on some items. This is the second location of the Irvine Ranch Market stores with the first one being in Costa Mesa. As the literal talk of the town for months the soft opening of this location today did not disappoint. This market has taken over the once historic Hershey's Market And has even added pictures of the old market and old Balboa all throughout the interior walls. They have really done an amazing job.... The energy was high, the deli was buzzing and all the customers were laughing and smiling from beginning to end. (I sat and ate my Sandwich Inside on one of their little tables) Considering this market is only 4000 ft.² you have to applaud them for making the most out of the available space. They have everything a market on Balboa Island should have: A rockn' deli, bakery, some produce, made to order salads, A meat selection, fresh cut fruit and much more.
