This is the quintessential hole-in-the-wall restaurant. I drove last and decided I had to try it. When i walked in, I was second guessing myself. It's definitely old and well worn, even dusty behind the register. But it was pretty busy, so it's popular. I ordered the half size sandwich and it was actually quite large. Been a long time since visiting a Baldinos. We stopped by while in Savannah to try their great sandwiches. The bread is still the best. Homemade and soft with a great taste. I got the half Italian battalion and my wife got the combo half. Loaded with meat and cheese with plenty of lettuce and onion. We also got the vinegar and oil with mayo and mustard. Just as both of us remembered. We got the combo with chips and drink. They used to offer the best potato and pasta salad. The place still had the brown and yellow colors throughout. Hands down the best sub place in Savannah! I know you're probably looking at me with side eyes but it's something about that white bread that is untouchable. Now I've had subs from a few "artisanal" places around town but I always come back to Baldinos. My go to is the turkey sub on white bread, although I do opt for wheat occasionally, extra lettuce & onions, tomatoes, and light mayo. It's the perfect sub and you pair it with the jalapeños chips and you have an instant winner. There's nothing fancy about this place but that's why I love it! It's just good food and nothing more. They slice the meat to order so a little wait. Service - 2 stars, rather stoic, straight forward, no frills. Some basic friendly greets would help. While working on Hunter Army Airfield asked some of the soldiers I worked with for recommendations for lunch. All of them recommended Baldino's Giant Jersey Subs. On our last day, we headed there. Just as advertised- giant subs with freshly baked bread, lots of options, and reasonable prices. Ordered the American Army- ham and roast beef. It was a big ol' thing that cost less than $7. The bread was definitely the star of the show- nice and fluffy with a great smell and taste. I walked in and there was a line 7 people deep, less than a minute later I was at the counter placing my order, and less than 5 minutes later I had my sandwich in hand. I will say that when I'm in a new town. One of the first I do is to find good sandwich shop. I have to admit that one of those are Jersey Mike's and then I found Baldino's. There used to be one in Jax but it closed. So There is one not far from my hotels so. The place is small with some seating. I order my normal an Italian sub. I will say that they make a pretty good sub. It could use some more meat thou. The bread is really good and fresh the couple of times that I have been. It is soft but crisp enough to hold all of the fillings. The meat is the meat and so is the lettuce n onions. The only thing that I wish that they would do is add some oil n vinegar and maybe some oregano. That would set me over the top for sure. NO NO NO!!! Ordered the meatball sub-a "Hot" sub and it was cold. Asked them to heat up.. the bread was warm and meat inside cold --after the reheat!! Ugggh!! Went here all the time when I was in 1st Batt. Right outside the gate and a great sandwich on fresh baked bread, soft but a nice crust to the outside and strong enough to hold up to the fillings. Many great choices, both hot and cold, but my usual go to was always the Sicilian "the spiciest Italian of all" with all the toppings, some provolone cappicola and pepperoni, or the Italian Battalion especially to tide you through a Sunday on Staff Duty, a giant would last you as 2 to 4 meals easily. Now that I have moved I have to get my fix from Jersey Mike's but I will always remember how amazing Baldinos is and was. Also, to help you make it through Staff Duty when you pick up your sub if they have them pick up a few of their pepperoni rolls, a dough ball stuffed and filled with pepperoni and I think perhaps cheese and baked, giving you a nice tender bite through the bed to the lightly spicy filling of pepperoni, so good. read more

I haven't been to Baldino's since I got out of the Army in 2006, but it was definitely my favorite place in Savannah and is one of my favorite sandwich shops in the country. They don't offer anything fancy, just simple, fresh and delicious ingredients and big sandwiches. My favorites included the Italian Battalion, turkey breast and tuna. Baldino's isn't in the coolest part of town, but if you're visiting Savannah, don't let that stop you from going. There food is inexpensive and better than anything on River Street. read more

We took a detour off 95 on our way to Orlando specifically for Baldino's and were glad we did. Old feel- brown and yellow metal awnings, old red and brown pizzeria style booths, old lighted menu behind counter- but incredible tasting subs. Bread was light and airy, melt in your mouth. They only offer provolone cheese which was mild and melty like mozzarella. The meatballs and spicy sauce were incredible. The place was packed with locals. Worth the look!!! read more
