I do not go to this restaurant. I went during the pandemic. The service and the food was ok. There was no Spanish music so I used my UTUBE channel that had music I had downloaded from old traditional Spanish music I listen to at home. There was no Spanish decor. The restaurant sits very close, I mean very very close to a very busy 160/285 well traveled roads with large trucks and plenty of tourists breaking the 25 mph speed limit. Really surprised on how good Baldo's was.. Located in the small town of Monte Vista, it is hard to not expect good quality food there. But Baldo's changed my mind quick. We got here right before the rush so we were seated right away. But when we were leaving we saw a line waiting to be seated. Baldo's specializes in Mexican food and breakfast meals. We ordered the Baldo's Omelet, French Toast, Breakfast Burrito, and their house coffee which is mixed with horchata. Each dish was delicious, and their coffee is a must try. Portions were also plenty so come hungry. The omelette was topped with avocado which made the dish extra creamy. Breakfast Burrito was smothered and at first we were a little thrown off by how the green chile looked ( more like a gravy look), but they knew what they were doing because it was delicious! The french toast was overkill but I am glad we got it because that was amazing. Definitely worth the extra calories. Our only complaint was our server was not on her A game. She was a little slow on service and we had to repeat ourselves several times to get our waters and utensils. Got takeout from here to eat before watching a movie at the Best Western Movie Manor and highly recommend Baldo's! My husband got the chicken chimichanga and I had the chili rellano combo platter. My only regret is that I couldn't get just all chili rellanos, they were so delicious smothered Christmas style. I also had a pork tamale and chicken enchilada with the combo. Worst experience. First one in around 5, party of 2. Followed by bigger parties behind us. They started getting their food. Everyone else was offered chips and salsa but not us. What a find! Driving through and stopped for lunch. Everything was superb!! We tried the Taco Al pastor plate, burrito grande with mix of green and red sauce, carne asada plate, and Sante de burrito. We were apprehensive at first given the size of the town and our limited options. We are here for the night and the dunes! Google to the rescue! Yes to chips and salsa. Just yes. Yes to Enchalada and Chimichunga. We tried their chicken, beef and cheese...again, yes. Green chile was spicy and delicious. At the end of our meal, we really didn't have room, but figured we would take a shot in the dark and ask if they had deep fried ice cream. Our server said "Maybe.." and moments later returned with a thing of beauty. It was even better than it looked. "With a cherry on top" ..and banana, strawberry and whip cream. Great food and service. Went there on a tip from a local. I had Chili Colorado which was mods but very flavorful with very tender pork chunks, served with tortillas. My wife had a 10-taco (yes 10) meal, which offered three options and she chose pork with fresh cilantro. Light and flavorful. My sister had a combo plate with pork. Took lots home as the plates meals were huge. The chips are also homemade and did not have much salt which was a nice change. I don't get to Montevista often but will return here! read more

We took a chance here for lunch when we came to see the cranes and I am so glad we did! This is a family run business with a wonderful heart and delicious food. The margaritas were lovely as was the service. I always use the quality of the refried beans as an indicator of great Mexican and theirs is creamy, made from "real" (not canned) beans and is homemade. I had the ceviche and it was delicious too. This place is a hidden gem!! We stopped in based on yelp and google reviews, as we were passing through town. We had no idea what to expect. They offered us the lunch buffet, and we were sooo happy for some fresh veggies and fruit! They have a full salad bar, several fruit options, and dessert options, in addition to all of your mexican food favorites - rolled tacos, make-your-own-tacos, chile rellenos, enchiladas, rice & beans, and then a few other things, like steak and potatoes, ribs, etc. I didn't try everything, but what I had was tasty and flavorful. If you have room, definitely have a sopapilla with some honey. My husband had to talk me out of a second one, they were SO good. If we ever happen to pass through this way again, we'll definitely stop. And everyone there was SO polite and friendly. A huge plus. read more

11 of us, most limited English speakers, stopped into Baldo's for dinner Saturday night. As usual, staff was very friendly and helpful. Food was really delicious. After eating, we had to leave rather quickly as we were trying to get back to see the Sandhill Cranes before sunset. Staff handled the situation of 11 simultaneous checkouts with aplomb and smiles on their faces. We've been to Baldo's before during the annual crane migration, and we've never been disappointed. Visited Baldos on July 12, 2014. Food was a bit above average, as was the service. We had a New York steak and a beef fajitas plate. Nice sweet crisp and not greasy tortilla chips and good salsa were brought out to start. Steak was a bit grisly but good flavor. Enjoyed the seasoned fries. Nice touch to add fresh sliced mushrooms to fajitas, and to heat the plates so food stayed hot longer. Prices were OK, $11 for the steak and $11 for the fajitas. Fair, not a great deal. Would have been 4 stars, but there was an issue with the check that wasn't handled well. We ate half the tortilla chips and ran out of salsa (it was in a tiny bowl, inadequate amount for the chip basket). We asked for a refill, which we got, but on the check we were charged $1.95 extra for the extra tablespoon-full of salsa we received. I asked about the charge and expressed my unhappiness that we were charged for a tiny bit of extra salsa. Waiter said it was for "extra chips and salsa" -- well, we got no extra chips and a dab of salsa for $1.95, so not very happy. You should be happy with your meal, but watch out for being nickel and dimed at Baldos. read more

My friend and I were traveling through Monte Vista at 10:00 am and wanted to find a place to eat. Even though we were skeptical based on outside appearance, we stopped at Baldo's. Our waiter was extremely friendly & helpful. I ordered the veggie omelet. I was shocked when my plate arrived! The presentation was BEAUTIFUL! I wish I had taken a picture! I can't remember ever saying that about Mexican Food. There were papas on the plate with a bit of cheese melted on them and lightly sauced with amazing green chili. All flavors were spot on. Veggies fresh & colorful. Beautiful slices of avocado on top. Chef Baldo stopped by our table looking most professional. This is no ordinary Mexican joint! Prices were very reasonable. Everything about this place was terrible. We went for dinner over Memorial Day weekend. This is the only Mexican restaurant I have ever been to that doesn't serve alcohol. The service was a bit on the slow side. One of us ordered the chile rellenos, which weren't very tasty. Two of us ordered burritos. The menu said the burritos came with sour cream and guacamole, but when they arrived, they had neither. The server told us they weren't included with the meal. We did ask another server for them, and she brought them out for us. Fortunately, there was no extra charge. Unfortunately, the guac and green chile were a weird and unnatural shade of green and tasted weird. I would never go back here; I'd rather just eat at the local DQ Grill and Chill. read more
