My significant other claims Juanito's Mexican Kitchen in Alamosa, CO, to be the best in the area. I haven't eaten much Mexican food in these parts, but I relied on my trusty rating breakdown (further below) for guidance with this matter. FOOD There was complimentary chips and salsa. It was okay. I started craving a stuffed sopapilla ($17.99) as soon as I saw it on the menu. The pork was so tender and the green sauce I requested was full of flavor. Highly recommend this meal. My daughter asked for the quesadillas ($12.49) from the appetizers. It was strange that in the middle of the triangular goodies with requested ground beef was a huge pool of red sauce. She enjoyed the side of guacomole ($1.99). My SO had the steak Mexicana ($17.99) which he seemed to enjoy. My other daughter had the shrimp Mexicana ($17.99). She gobbled the shrimp. I tried her beans and rice which I didn't have with my own meal. They were pretty good. SERVICE I really enjoyed meeting the owner. He came to our table and helped clean up some water my daughter accidentally spilled. The only thing I wish that had happened that evening was that all of our meals would have been served all at once. They were spread out minutes apart. AMBIANCE The parking lot was in construction as of 5/26/2023. Inside, the place may be small, yet, there were large and small tables and booths. It's a seat yourself type of place. There were vibrant colors everywhere. A white board with their daily specials was on the wall near the kitchen. I wish I had seen it earlier. Typical little New Mexican style restaurant when you walk in... but surpasses typical. The wait staff was friendly and attentive - she came to our table in under a minute from when we were seated. Started our meal with a sopapilla, which had just come out of the cooker - fluffy, hot, and delicious. We ordered the Heuvos Rancheros plate and the Fiesta Platter. Both were perfectly done. Went back after a great experience last time- and was very disappointed with the food. Service and ambiance still good, but the salsa with the chips was nothing but ketchup and Tabasco mixed together. Located a block off of the main highway makes it perfect for someone just going through town. Don't be fooled by the bowling alley next door, the restaurant is separate. The service is very friendly and the dining room is large. There also is a large separate meeting area in the back. The placed filled up quickly with the elderly locals and the owner greeted everyone. Because they catered to the local Anglo population the food is spiced accordingly. There is a wide variety of "Mexican" dishes and being on the edge of New Mexico they offer red & green chili. I would recommend it because the dishes are substantial and they offer a variety. My note of caution is to those who want a little more kick to there food. read more

We had the best fajitas we have ever had. Authentic and arriving on a hot skillet so meal stayed hot. Friendly staff with one person cleaning the restaurant throughout out our meal. Needless to say, a very clean place to eat. read more

The flavoring is perfect including the enchiladas... they used Monterey Jack cheese. I loved my pina colada as well. Most Mexican restaurants usually either get the rice or the beans right, but he got both perfect. read more

Service was pretty good. The place itself was kind of dingy but I wouldn't call it dirty. Food was pretty meh. I got the stuffed sopapilla with beef and beans, Christmas style. The restaurant has changed locations. It is now just off of hwy 160 on First St. The menu is basically the same, thank goodness, and the food still has that homemade taste. The service was excellent. BUT, the entire building needs a good, professional steam cleaning. If the kitchen is as dirty as the floors and restrooms, I am surprised the health inspector gave a passing rating. While our entire experience was not awful at this restaurant, there were enough issues to warrant the rating. The steak in our son's tacos was both burned and overly fatty. Their margaritas are, from the best we could tell, only tequila and a small amount of lime juice. Bad margaritas are such an easily avoidable and cardinal sin for a Mexican restaurant! While the rest of our food wasn't bad and the service was friendly, the food was far from what I would expect at an authentic Mexican restaurant clearly owned and staffed by people of Mexican descent. It was on par with what you would get at just about any chain restaurant in any city. The final insult was getting charged a credit card fee of $5 on a dinner bill that was over $100. When I questioned it, the man who I can only guess was the owner looked at me, shrugged his shoulders, and said "I'm sorry, that's the machine charging you that fee". THAT'S NOT A DAMNED MACHINE CHARGING ME A FEE, IT'S YOUR RESTAURANT AND HENCE YOU! Did he think I was stupid? I have never in my life been charged a credit card fee for a restaurant bill of any size let alone over $100. I have never felt more nickel and dimed in my life. read more

It's rare to find a restaurant in a small town with great, authentic food and great service. I found that tonight at Juanito's. The enchilada plate was outstanding. The service was exceptional without being overbearing. Maria, the owner, went out of her way to accommodate us as out of town guests. We were dropping our daughter off at Adam's State University and decided to stop by Juanito's for dinner. The owner and staff were very welcoming and polite. We're from California and are very familiar with Mexican food. You can always tell a good restaurant by their homemade chips, salsa and beans. Juanito's crushed it. My daughter and I got tacos and my wife got a burrito. They were delicious. Very light and flavorful. There was no extra cheese, or unnecessary toppings. Next time I'm in town to watch my daughter wrestle I am definitely stopping by. I highly recommend Juanito's. The only thing I didn't like is we didn't have enough time to check out the pool hall and bowling. I'm sure my daughter and the wrestling team will be stopping by soon. Really good Mexican food in a pleasant setting. Food was fresh and well prepared. Service was outstanding, from a good-humored and attentiv to server to the chef himself. We ad some confusion about whether the beans were Pinto, Black, or refried, so we initially took a pass. When the shef observed by wife eating the refried beans off my plate, he cam out with a side of refried beans that my wife scarfed don without taking a breath. thsi level of attention is exceptinal, in my eperience. Juanito's ahs the atmosphere of most family-styoe Mexican resaturnts, but cleaner. It appeared to me to be a favored by locals, as it is eay to pass by on your way to Santa Fe or Denver. If you are remotly hungey, stop by here and you will tahnk yourself! In fairness, I'm not overly fond of Mexican food in the Colorado/New Mexico region. The fascination with chili is something that totally escapes me. We were looking for authentic Mexican/texmex while in town to see the dunes. First, Beware the parking is primarily in the back. When we drove by, there was minimal parking in front and it looked closed. Bad sign. We went around the block and saw the parking lot was in the back and was FULL. Good sign. The server was very courteous. The food was served quickly in generous portions and tasted excellent. The owner made rounds checking on the patrons meals.
